If Skyrim DLC will not download or does not appear on your PS5, first identify the exact content and edition. Then verify the PlayStation account and completed transaction, retry the download queue, restore licenses, and install the latest Skyrim update. Dawnguard, Hearthfire, Dragonborn, Anniversary content, and in-game Creations do not all use the same installation path. Reinstall the whole game only for the specific Creations or Anniversary-content situations Bethesda documents.
Identify what is actually missing
“DLC” can mean several different things in Skyrim, and each follows a different ownership and installation path. Confirm the exact item before troubleshooting:
- Official add-ons: Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn.
- Anniversary Edition or Anniversary Upgrade: the US PlayStation Store listing for Skyrim Special Edition identifies the Anniversary Edition as including those three add-ons plus Creation Club content. Store names, prices, and availability can differ by country and can change over time, so use your own region’s listing when checking an entitlement: Skyrim Special Edition – PS5 & PS4.
- Creations: content obtained from Skyrim Special Edition’s in-game Creations menu, rather than a separate PlayStation Store add-on. Bethesda documents the menu-based installation process in Install Creations for Skyrim Special Edition.
Also check the edition installed on the console. The PlayStation Store listing covers Skyrim Special Edition for PS4 and PS5, while Bethesda states that the next-generation upgrade is free for eligible owners: Is the upgrade to the next-gen version free?. A prompt to buy or upgrade can therefore indicate an account or edition mismatch, not a failed download.

Do not treat a Creation as proof that the official Dawnguard, Hearthfire, or Dragonborn files are missing. Conversely, do not expect an official Store add-on to appear only because a Creation is visible in the in-game menu. Write down the exact name shown in the Store, Game Library, or Creations menu before you change anything.

Match the symptom to the safest first action

This distinction prevents the most common wrong turn: deleting a working game to solve what is actually a purchase-account or license-recognition problem.
1. Verify the purchasing account and transaction
A PlayStation license belongs to the account that completed the purchase. On the PS5, sign in with that account before trying another download. Open the account’s transaction history and confirm that the DLC, Anniversary Upgrade, or edition purchase shows as completed. Do not assume that because one profile can launch Skyrim, every profile on the console owns every add-on. Bethesda explains that a profile without the Anniversary Edition purchase can be prompted to upgrade even when another profile on the same console owns it: Anniversary Edition prompt on PlayStation. Switch to the purchasing profile for the entitlement check and for the initial download attempt.
If the transaction is missing, pending, reversed, or attached to a different regional account, downloading again will not create ownership. Resolve that transaction or account issue with PlayStation before changing the game installation. A second purchase is not a troubleshooting step for content you already own, and buying an edition in another region may not match the account or Store listing you are using.
If another household profile bought the content, record that fact rather than repeatedly searching the non-purchasing profile’s library. The Anniversary prompt can be explained by that ownership split even when Skyrim itself is installed and playable. Support can use the purchasing account’s transaction history to determine what was actually bought.
2. Check and retry the PS5 download queue
When the download itself is stalled, use the PS5’s queue controls rather than reinstalling Skyrim immediately.
- Press the PS button to open Control Center.
- Select Downloads/Uploads and locate the Skyrim add-on or upgrade.
- Pause the item, wait for the state to change, and select resume.
- If it remains stuck, cancel and delete the queue entry.
- Open Game Library, find Skyrim, and retry the download from the game’s available add-ons or library options.
A pause-and-resume attempt is appropriate when the item is present but not progressing. Canceling and deleting the entry is the next step when the queue record itself appears stuck; it does not establish ownership, so complete the account and transaction check first.
While the queue is open, check the conditions PlayStation identifies as relevant: current PlayStation system software, enough free storage, and the status of PlayStation online services. A service interruption or a full drive can prevent a valid purchase from starting even when the license is correct. Leave other large downloads paused while you retry if you need to see whether the Skyrim item advances. If the queue entry repeatedly fails after deletion and a fresh retry, move to license restoration rather than repeatedly creating new queue entries. If the item never appears in Downloads/Uploads at all, return to Game Library and the signed-in purchasing account instead of assuming the game files are corrupted.
3. Restore the Skyrim licenses on PS5
License restoration makes the console recheck purchases associated with the signed-in PlayStation account. PlayStation specifically lists a missing game or add-on as a reason to try this operation.
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Users and Accounts.
- Choose Other.
- Select Restore Licenses.
- Choose the relevant license and follow the on-screen confirmation.
PlayStation states, “Please note, restoring licenses won’t affect your data.” The procedure does not replace the account or transaction check: it can refresh recognition of a completed purchase, but it cannot grant an add-on that the signed-in account never bought. After restoration completes, return to Skyrim’s Game Library entry and check the add-on download again. If the Store still shows a purchase prompt for content that appears in the purchasing account’s completed transaction history, retain that evidence for PlayStation Support. If another profile owns the Anniversary Edition, restoring licenses while signed in to the wrong profile will not convert that profile into the purchaser.
Restoring licenses is deliberately earlier in the sequence than reinstalling. It addresses recognition of a digital entitlement without removing the installed game or your local data, so it is the appropriate response to an apparently missing add-on or padlock when ownership is already documented.
4. Update Skyrim before diagnosing an add-on-check freeze
A different failure occurs after the content is installed: Skyrim can stop at “Checking for add-ons” or “Checking for Downloadable Content.” Bethesda says this happens when DLC is installed to the console but the game does not have its most recent title update. Bethesda’s explanation applies to the console version generally, not only to PS5: Skyrim freezes at “Checking for add-ons”.
Connect the PS5 to the internet and allow Skyrim to obtain its latest patch. Then start the game again and let the add-on check finish. This step is separate from restoring licenses: a valid license and a completed DLC download do not correct a game installation that lacks the title update required to process that content.

If the console reports that Skyrim is already current but the freeze continues, record the exact wording and point at which it stops. Do not jump to a full reinstall solely because the add-on check appeared; Bethesda reserves that remedy for particular Creations and Anniversary-content scenarios described below.
5. Keep Creations troubleshooting separate from Store DLC
Creations are downloaded and managed through Skyrim Special Edition’s in-game Creations menu. They are not always represented as a conventional individual Store add-on, so a missing Creation should first be checked in that menu while signed in to the account used for the content. The in-game workflow is distinct from opening the PS5 Store page for Dawnguard, Hearthfire, Dragonborn, or the Anniversary Upgrade.
Large numbers of activated Creations can produce a distinct startup failure. Bethesda’s support guidance for the console case in which Skyrim is stuck or will not start after activating many Creations is to uninstall and reinstall the entire game: Skyrim stuck after activating many Creations. That is an escalation for this documented symptom, not a universal fix for an add-on that is merely absent from the download queue.
Before taking that step, complete the account, transaction, queue, license, and title-update checks. Otherwise you can remove a working installation without correcting the entitlement or network problem that caused the original complaint. If the complaint concerns only one Creation, note its name and whether the game starts normally without it; those details help distinguish a Creation-specific startup problem from a general Store entitlement failure.
6. Reinstall only for the supported Anniversary or Creation cases
Bethesda states that the Anniversary Upgrade cannot be uninstalled separately on PlayStation. If you need to remove specific Anniversary content, the supported approach may require uninstalling and reinstalling Skyrim, then choosing the content to use: Enable or disable purchased Creation Club content.
Use a full reinstall when one of these conditions applies:
- Skyrim remains stuck after the documented many-Creations activation scenario.
- You specifically need to remove or reset Anniversary content that cannot be uninstalled as an individual PlayStation item.
A reinstall is not the first response to a missing entitlement, a purchase prompt, a stalled queue, or a license-recognition problem. Those cases are addressed by the account, transaction, download, and license steps above. Confirm those checks before removing the game, and follow the content-selection prompts during the fresh installation.

7. What not to buy or replace
This problem normally does not call for a new disc, controller, repair kit, or other accessory. A purchase-account mismatch, missing digital entitlement, license-recognition issue, stalled download, or absent title update is handled through PlayStation or Bethesda support steps. If the console actually lacks free storage, freeing space is the relevant remedy; buying extra hardware is not a universal requirement.
Likewise, buying the Anniversary Edition again will not repair an already-owned add-on whose license or download is malfunctioning. First determine whether the account owns Dawnguard, Hearthfire, Dragonborn, the Anniversary Upgrade, or a Creation. Store pricing and availability vary by market, so do not use a different region’s listing as proof that a transaction should appear on your account.
8. Escalate with evidence if the problem remains
When the steps above do not resolve the issue, contact PlayStation Support for a Store, account, transaction, queue, or license problem. PlayStation asks for useful reproduction details rather than a general statement that DLC is missing. Prepare:

- The exact error message or on-screen prompt.

- The PlayStation account used to purchase the content and the transaction-history result.
- The edition and specific content involved: Dawnguard, Hearthfire, Dragonborn, Anniversary Upgrade, or a Creation.
- The steps that reproduce the failure and the time it occurred.
- A screenshot or video, if possible.
These details align with the escalation information in PlayStation’s game-download support guidance. For a title-update or Creations-specific failure, include the same evidence when contacting Bethesda Support and identify whether Skyrim stops at “Checking for add-ons” or after activating Creations.
Keep the transaction record tied to the purchasing account, note the PS5 system-software state, and say whether free storage and PlayStation service status were checked. This lets support separate a missing entitlement from a temporary queue failure or an outdated game installation.

What should I do when the Skyrim DLC download is stuck?
Open Downloads/Uploads from Control Center, pause and resume the item, then check PlayStation service status, system software, and free storage. If it remains stuck, cancel and delete the queue entry and retry from Game Library.
