When PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS will not connect, disconnects during a match, or shows unstable ping, troubleshoot in layers: first check for maintenance or an outage, then remove local bandwidth pressure, restart the PC and router, test Ethernet, review security software, and finally check the ISP and home network. This order avoids risky changes and helps you identify whether the fault is with PUBG, your route to its servers, or your own equipment.
A status indicator cannot diagnose every regional or routing problem, so retest after each change and record the exact error, time, region, ISP and match details before contacting support.
Identify what kind of connection problem you have
Connection symptoms overlap. “Cannot connect to the game,” “unable to connect to server,” “connection timeout,” repeated disconnects, lag and packet loss are useful descriptions, but none proves a single cause. PUBG Support lists service maintenance, updates, bandwidth-heavy software, firewall or antivirus interference, wireless interference, ISP faults, router settings and DNS issues as possibilities. Treat the table below as a way to choose the next check, not as a diagnosis.

PUBG’s connection guidance also distinguishes network drops and server load from low frame rate. If your picture is stuttering while ping and packet loss remain normal, investigate PC performance separately.

Follow this low-risk troubleshooting order
1. Check PUBG’s live status and maintenance notices
Open the PUBG Developer Portal status page before changing Windows or router settings. It lists services including Steam and shows a live operational state. PUBG Support also notes that scheduled maintenance and game updates can coincide with connection failures; read the latest notices on the PUBG Support site.
A green status does not prove that every player, region or ISP route can reach the game. The page is a snapshot, not a guarantee that your particular path is healthy. If the incident is ongoing, check the page again after several minutes and compare the time of any status change with your own failures. Do not assume a universal outage from one normal-looking result.
2. Stop programs that consume substantial bandwidth
Pause downloads, cloud synchronisation, video streams, game updates, peer-to-peer transfers and other applications that can saturate your connection. PUBG Support identifies network-hogging programs as a possible reason for an unhealthy game network status.

- Close or pause the largest transfers on the PC.
- Ask other people on the home network to pause large downloads or high-bitrate streams for one test.
- Launch PUBG and reproduce the problem under that quieter condition.
- If the connection improves, resume programs one at a time to find the traffic that causes the conflict.
This test is more useful than changing several router settings at once because it leaves a clear before-and-after result.
3. Restart the PC and router
Power-cycle both ends of your local connection before attempting advanced changes. Exit PUBG, restart Windows, then restart the router or gateway using its normal power procedure. Wait for the router to complete its normal connection process before launching the game again.
A restart can clear a transient router state or a stuck network session, but it does not repair an ISP outage or a persistent wireless dead zone. If the problem returns, continue with the next test instead of repeatedly rebooting.

4. Compare Wi-Fi with wired Ethernet
PUBG’s connectivity guide recommends trying a wired connection because wireless is more vulnerable to environmental interference that can raise latency or packet loss. Connect the PC directly to the router with an Ethernet cable, disable Wi-Fi for the test if necessary, and play or remain in the lobby long enough to reproduce the symptom.

- If Ethernet has the same failure, Wi-Fi interference is less likely to be the main cause; continue with the ISP, router, security and service checks.
- If your PC has no Ethernet port, a compatible USB-to-Ethernet adapter can provide a temporary test. PUBG does not specifically endorse an adapter or guarantee that it will solve a disconnect.
An Ethernet cable enables this comparison; it is not a universal cure for server, ISP or routing problems.
5. Check firewall and antivirus interference safely
PUBG Support says that firewall or antivirus software may interfere with the game’s connection. Test this possibility cautiously. Do not leave protection disabled while you play or browse.
- Check the security product’s blocked-events, quarantine or application-control area for PUBG or its launcher.
- Use the product’s documented method to allow the game and launcher through the firewall, rather than opening broad inbound access.
- Retest PUBG, then confirm that real-time protection and the firewall are enabled.
An older PUBG article titled “Unable to connect to server. The firewall may also block the connection” was updated May 18, 2020. It contains command-line instructions for stopping or resetting Windows Defender. Because those instructions are old and broad, treat them as historical troubleshooting material, not as a routine first step. If a brief diagnostic points to a block, correct the specific rule using your security vendor’s current instructions and restore protection immediately.
6. Check the ISP, router firmware and network features
If the service looks normal and the basic tests did not help, check the connection outside the game. PUBG’s General Connectivity Guide, linked from the PUBG Support homepage, recommends checking ISP service status and router firmware, trying an alternate connection and flushing DNS. It also identifies UPnP and third-party networking software such as VPNs as items to investigate.

- Install router firmware only through the manufacturer’s normal administration process, and record the existing version before changing it.
- Try a different Internet connection, such as a phone hotspot, only as a short diagnostic. A successful hotspot test suggests a problem with the usual ISP, router or route; it does not prove that the game servers are healthy for every region.
- Flush the PC’s DNS cache using the current procedure for your Windows version, then retest. DNS changes affect name resolution; they cannot repair packet loss that occurs after the connection is established.
- Review UPnP and any VPN, traffic filter, overlay or other third-party networking software. Disable or change one item at a time, record the original setting, and undo the change if it has no useful effect.
PUBG’s guide explicitly labels disabling the router firewall “NOT RECOMMEND.” Do not turn off the router firewall as a standard fix. Port forwarding, changing DNS providers or changing VPN endpoints are conditional diagnostics, not guaranteed solutions; use them only when a specific symptom and your prior tests justify the change.

7. Retest with one controlled change at a time
After every change, reproduce the same action that failed: connect to the lobby, join a match or observe the same ping condition. Write down the time, the setting changed and the result. If you change the router, security software, DNS and VPN simultaneously, you will not know which change mattered and may leave an unnecessary security or networking exception in place.
Interpret the results instead of guessing
Use the comparisons to narrow the fault domain. Improvement after stopping downloads points toward congestion on the PC or home network. Improvement only on Ethernet points toward the wireless segment, while identical wired and wireless failures shift attention to the router, ISP, route or service. A hotspot that works when the home connection fails implicates the usual connection path, but a hotspot test can also use a different route and should not be treated as proof that PUBG itself is healthy.
Likewise, a failure that affects several online services at the same time is different evidence from a PUBG-only failure. Note whether web browsing, voice chat or another online game also drops. These observations do not replace support diagnostics, but they make your report more precise and prevent repeated changes that cannot answer a specific question.

Use symptom-specific branches when the basic sequence is not enough
“PUBG can’t connect to the game” or “unable to connect to server”
Start with the status page and maintenance notices, then close bandwidth-heavy software and restart the PC and router. If the error remains, inspect security software for a blocked PUBG process and test an alternate connection. A failure on both your normal connection and a separate connection, while the status page remains operational, is useful evidence for support but still does not identify the exact fault by itself.
Connection timeout during startup
Record the complete error text and the time it appeared. Check whether the game recently updated or whether maintenance was announced. Confirm that the launcher and game are not being blocked by firewall or antivirus controls, then perform the Ethernet and alternate-connection tests. Avoid repeatedly reinstalling or deleting files unless PUBG Support specifically directs it; the documented connectivity checks do not establish reinstallation as a universal remedy.
PUBG keeps disconnecting during a match
Intermittent failures make the wired comparison especially valuable. Stop other traffic, restart the router, test Ethernet and check the ISP for instability. If Ethernet and Wi-Fi fail in the same way, note whether other devices lose connectivity at the same moment. If only PUBG drops while other services remain usable, include that distinction in your support report and review security or third-party networking software.

High ping, lag or packet loss
First separate network symptoms from frame-rate symptoms. Network trouble appears as delayed actions, rubber-banding, packet-loss indicators or a changing ping; low FPS appears as consistently slow rendering even when the connection indicators are stable. For network symptoms, stop competing traffic and compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet. Wireless improvement points toward interference or local radio conditions, while identical results on wired and wireless make the ISP, router, route or service more relevant.

The problem happens only sometimes
Intermittent errors require timestamps. Keep a short log with the exact time, whether you were on Wi-Fi or Ethernet, the match or server information if shown, other devices using the connection, and the error text. This lets you compare failures with maintenance windows, household traffic or ISP incidents instead of relying on memory.
What to collect before contacting PUBG Support
PUBG Support can investigate more effectively when the report describes a reproducible event. Use the support request route available from the PUBG Support homepage and include:
- The approximate date and time the problem began, including your time zone.
- The exact symptom: failure before the lobby, timeout, mid-match disconnect, unstable ping or packet loss.
- The complete error message, copied accurately rather than paraphrased.
- Your country, usual region and Internet service provider.
- Whether you were using Wi-Fi or Ethernet and whether an alternate connection changed the result.
- The troubleshooting steps you already tried, in order, and what happened after each one.
- The server or match ID, if the game displays one.
- A screenshot or short video showing the error when that provides information that text cannot.
Do not include passwords, payment details or unrelated personal information. A concise timeline is more useful than a long list of speculative causes.

- Assuming a green status page rules out every outage: a regional issue or route failure can remain possible.
- Disabling the firewall or antivirus for a long period: use a brief diagnostic only, then create a narrow allow rule through the vendor’s current guidance.
- Turning off the router firewall: PUBG’s own guide marks this “NOT RECOMMEND.”
- Changing several settings at once: you lose the ability to identify the effective change and to undo harmless settings safely.
- Promising yourself that DNS flushing, UPnP, port forwarding, a VPN change or a new cable must fix it: these are conditional checks, not guaranteed cures.
- Calling low FPS a connection failure: confirm whether the symptom is network delay or rendering performance before changing network settings.
When to stop local troubleshooting
Stop making local changes when you have completed the status check, bandwidth test, restart, wired comparison, security review and wider-connection checks, or when a change introduces a new problem. Restore temporary settings, keep your notes and escalate with the evidence above. If your ISP confirms an outage or line instability, work with the ISP; if the failure is limited to PUBG and persists across controlled tests, provide PUBG Support with the timeline, exact error and connection comparisons.

Why can I use the Internet but PUBG cannot connect?
PUBG can be affected by a game-service issue, a route-specific problem, a firewall or antivirus rule, VPN or other networking software, or a connection problem that does not affect every website. Close bandwidth-heavy programs, check status, review security blocks and compare your normal connection with Ethernet or a short alternate-connection test.
Will an Ethernet cable definitely fix PUBG disconnects?
No. PUBG Support recommends trying wired Ethernet because Wi-Fi is more vulnerable to environmental interference that can increase latency or packet loss. If Ethernet is stable and Wi-Fi is not, investigate the wireless environment. If both connections fail in the same way, look at the router, ISP, route, security software or service instead.
Should I disable Windows Defender or my antivirus to fix the connection?

What information should I send PUBG Support?
Include the approximate start date and time with time zone, exact error text, symptom, country and usual region, ISP, Wi-Fi or Ethernet status, alternate-connection results, troubleshooting steps and outcomes, and the server or match ID if available. Add a screenshot or short video when it clarifies the error, but do not include passwords or payment information.
Is PUBG lag the same as low FPS?
No. Network trouble causes delayed actions, rubber-banding, packet-loss indicators or changing ping. Low FPS is a rendering-performance problem that can occur while network indicators remain stable. Confirm which symptom you have before changing router or DNS settings; graphics and performance troubleshooting is more appropriate for consistently low frames.
