Work through PS5 Pro problems in this order: verify the console’s physical setup and display connection, configure the network and install system software updates, identify whether a storage problem is about capacity or game playback, and then check any M.2 SSD against Sony’s requirements. The PS5 Pro troubleshooting paths for TV connection, image flickering, audio, discs, overheating, 8K output and other symptoms are separate, so the correct fix depends on what you see on screen. If the relevant steps do not resolve the fault, use PlayStation Support for an issue-specific diagnosis.
The procedures below apply the PS5 Pro CFI-71XX hardware information in Sony’s 2025 safety guide and Sony’s general PS5 setup, storage and M.2 guidance. Menu names and support availability can vary by region and system-software version.
Start with the symptom, not the accessory
Before buying a cable, display or storage drive, record the exact symptom. A blank TV screen, intermittent flicker, missing 8K output, a failed update, a full drive or a game that will not launch from expansion storage require different checks.

- Picture appears but looks unchanged: check the game, display mode and whether the title is a PS4 game with an available upgrade.
- Picture flickers: use the image-flickering troubleshooting path after confirming the HDMI connection.
- No sound: check the selected audio output and the TV or receiver input before changing storage or network settings.
- Slow downloads or a failed online connection: set up the internet connection, then update system software.
- “Not enough space” or a game that will not run from a drive: distinguish capacity management from the type of storage being used.
- Heat, disc or 8K-specific warnings: use the matching PS5 Pro troubleshooting route rather than applying a generic reset.
Do not repeatedly power-cycle the console while it is updating, formatting an M.2 drive or saving data. An interruption during those operations can create a separate data problem.

When the PS5 Pro is not connecting to a TV
Verify the physical setup
- Place the console on its model-specific base or feet. If you want vertical placement, Sony says the vertical stand is sold separately.
- Connect one end of an HDMI cable to the PS5 Pro port labelled HDMI OUT.
- Connect the other end to an HDMI input on the TV or monitor, not to another output port.
- Connect the console’s power cable and turn on the display.
- Use the display remote to select the exact HDMI input used by the console.
During the first start, follow the on-screen prompts for pairing the controller, choosing a language, connecting to the internet, configuring the display, setting Rest Mode and accepting the user agreement. Completing those prompts helps separate an unfinished first-run setup from a hardware or cable fault.
If the display still shows no signal
Turn the TV to the confirmed input and check that the HDMI plugs are fully seated at both ends. If the display has several HDMI inputs, try another input that supports the resolution and refresh features you intend to use. Disconnect unnecessary switches, receivers or capture devices temporarily so the signal path contains only the PS5 Pro and display.
Do not assume that a new cable or TV is required before checking the connection and input. If the console remains unable to connect, use Sony’s PS5 Pro route labelled Console not connecting to TV; it provides the issue-specific recovery choices rather than treating every blank screen as a failed console.

“I cannot see upgraded image quality for a PS4 game”
An image-quality improvement is conditional on the particular PS4 game, its available enhancement and the display’s supported modes. Confirm that the game is updated, that the TV is using the input connected to the PS5 Pro, and that the display settings are not forcing a lower mode. Sony lists a separate troubleshooting question, Not seeing upgraded image quality for a PS4 game? Use that route when the console works but the expected enhancement is absent.

“Can’t capture screenshots in 8K?”
8K output and 8K capture are separate capabilities from ordinary video output. Confirm that the title, display mode and capture feature support the requested setting. The PS5 Pro troubleshooting hub has a specific Can’t capture screenshots in 8K? path; follow it instead of changing storage or reinstalling the game.
Image flickers or audio is missing
For flicker, first reseat the HDMI cable and verify the selected input. Then use the PS5 Pro image-flickering troubleshooting route. For missing audio, check the TV or receiver volume, its selected input and the PS5 Pro audio-output setting. If video works but sound does not, use Sony’s audio troubleshooting path; changing an M.2 drive will not correct an audio-output mismatch.
Set up the internet connection and update the console
Use the current network menu
- Open Settings.
- Select Network.
- Open Settings again.
- Select Set up Internet Connection.
- Choose the available Wi-Fi network or the wired connection, then enter the network security details when prompted.
The PS5 Pro supports Ethernet and Wi-Fi connectivity according to Sony’s PS5 Pro CFI-71XX safety information. A wired connection can remove wireless signal interference from the diagnosis, but it is not a universal requirement. If neither connection completes, follow the connection troubleshooting route linked from Sony’s setup guidance and check the router’s status separately from the console.

- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose System Software.
- Open System Software Update and Settings.
- Select the available update option and allow the console to finish.
Keep the PS5 Pro powered on and connected while an update downloads and installs. If downloading an update fails, Sony documents a manual update using a computer and an external drive. Use Sony’s current manual-update instructions for the required drive format, folder names and file placement; those details can change with the system-software release. Do not use a file from an unverified source.

If setup stops at the network step
Write down whether the failure occurs while finding the network, authenticating its password, obtaining an address or reaching online services. Re-enter the security details carefully, move the console closer to the wireless access point for the test, or temporarily use Ethernet. Once the console reaches the internet, install the system update before diagnosing a game or expansion drive. A current system version removes update-related variables from later troubleshooting.
Separate storage capacity from storage playback
The PS5 Pro CFI-71XX safety guide identifies a 2 TB custom SSD as the internal storage and an M.2 SSD expansion connector. A full internal drive is a capacity problem; a game that is installed but will not launch from expansion storage is a playback or installation problem.

Free space without creating a playback problem
Sony’s storage guidance allows you to delete data or move it between supported locations. If you use USB extended storage for a PS5 title, treat it as an archive: copy the title back to the console or an M.2 SSD before launching it. Moving a game is different from deleting it, but either operation can take time, so do not disconnect the drive while data is being transferred.
A game on M.2 storage has errors or will not start
First pause active downloads and allow a disc-based game’s installation to finish. Background downloads and an incomplete disc installation can interfere with the immediate test. If the problem continues, move the game from M.2 storage to internal console storage and try again. If it works internally, the result points to the expansion-drive installation or compatibility path; retain the drive’s details for a later support case rather than repeatedly reinstalling without recording what happened.

Check an M.2 SSD before you buy or install it
Sony’s PS5 M.2 support guide gives dimensional, interface and cooling conditions. Meeting the numbers makes a drive eligible for consideration, not guaranteed: Sony explicitly says that not every third-party drive meeting the listed specifications is assured to work, and performance may differ from the internal SSD in some games.

Check the manufacturer’s dimensions with the heatsink, thermal pad and any other attached parts included. A drive advertised as 2280 can still exceed the height limit once its cooler is installed. If the SSD has a built-in heatsink, do not add a second heatsink on top of it.
Install and format an M.2 SSD without losing data
Prepare safely
- Back up anything important on the new drive. Formatting on first use erases all data on the entire M.2 SSD.
- Use the model-specific installation instructions for the PS5 Pro and a #1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver.
- Before opening the console, touch a grounded metal object to discharge static electricity.
- Turn the console off completely, disconnect its cables and work on a stable surface.
- Never power on or play while the cover is removed.
After the drive is installed
- Reassemble the console and reconnect the cables.
- Start the PS5 Pro and follow the on-screen prompt to format the new M.2 SSD.
- Confirm that the correct drive is selected before accepting the format.
- Leave the console powered on while formatting and while data is being saved.
- Install or move a small amount of game data first, then test launching it before transferring the entire library.
Do not interrupt formatting. If the console cannot detect the drive, power it down before reopening it, then check that the SSD is fully seated, the retaining screw is in the correct position and the cooling assembly does not obstruct the connector. Recheck the published width and thickness limits rather than forcing the cover closed.

Overheating
Keep ventilation openings clear and place the console where air can circulate. Sony’s PS5 Pro CFI-71XX safety guide lists an operating temperature of 5 °C to 35 °C. A room or enclosure outside that range can make heat-related behavior more likely. If the console displays an overheating warning, shuts down or becomes unusually hot, stop demanding use, let it cool and follow Sony’s PS5 Pro overheating route. Do not remove covers while the console is running.

Disc problems
For a disc that is not recognized or an installation that stalls, verify that the disc is clean and inserted in the correct orientation for the console’s drive configuration. Let a disc game finish installing before testing gameplay, and pause unrelated downloads during the test. If the disc-specific route does not resolve the issue, retain the disc title, error wording and whether other discs work for PlayStation Support.
When to contact PlayStation Support
Escalate after you have completed the symptom-specific path, installed the available system software update, and recorded what changed. Include the PS5 Pro model family (CFI-71XX), the exact on-screen error, the display and connection type, whether the issue affects one game or all games, and whether the game is on internal, M.2 or USB storage. For an M.2 case, record the drive’s interface, capacity, form factor, read-speed specification and cooling dimensions.
Use PlayStation Support when the PS5 Pro still cannot connect to a known-good display, repeatedly fails an update, overheats within the stated operating range, rejects a compliant-looking M.2 installation, or exhibits the same fault after moving a game back to internal storage. Sony maintains separate routes for TV connection, 8K image and capture, flickering, audio, disc and overheating problems; choosing the closest symptom gives support the most useful starting point.
