Most PS5 consoles will not read an original PS2 game disc because Sony does not support PlayStation 2 format software from disc. A disc failing in a standard PS5 does not, by itself, show that the optical drive is broken. On a jailbroken console, a separate homebrew project called PS5SX2 offers experimental physical-disc handling, but it is disabled by default, version-sensitive and not guaranteed to work with every game.
Use the workflow below to separate an official format limitation from a disc, drive, configuration or emulator-compatibility problem. The PS5SX2 details reflect the project information available on October 13, 2026; homebrew features and requirements can change.
First identify which PS5 software path you are using
“Modded PS5” can mean two very different situations. You might have a console with a jailbreak but still be using the normal PS5 operating system and disc interface, or you might be running PS5SX2, a separate homebrew PlayStation 2 emulator. The troubleshooting answer depends on that distinction.

Standard PS5 operation
In ordinary PS5 operation, an original PS2 game disc is unsupported. Sony’s PS5 Safety Guide states: “PlayStation® format software, PlayStation®2 format software, and PlayStation®3 format software cannot be played from a disc.” A jailbreak does not automatically add PS2 disc support to Sony’s system software.

That means a normal “unrecognized disc” message, a return to the home screen or no game icon at all can be the expected result for a PS2 disc. It does not mean the console has failed a valid PS5 media test. The same conclusion applies even if the console is otherwise modified, because the modification alone does not replace the retail disc-recognition code.
PS5SX2 on a jailbroken console
PS5SX2 is an unofficial, native homebrew application for a jailbroken PS5. Its developer documentation describes physical PS2-disc handling as experimental and disabled by default. When the option is available and enabled, inserting a disc can cause the application to dump it when necessary and launch the game. That behavior is separate from the PS5’s normal disc reader and should not be treated as an official feature or a guaranteed way to play the PS2 library.
Physical-disc support therefore has several possible failure points: the build may not include the feature, the option may still be off, a required helper or mounting component may be missing, the BIOS may not be configured, the disc may not dump correctly, or the particular game may not yet be compatible. “It did not boot” is not one diagnosis.

Why a PS2 disc can be rejected even when the drive is healthy
The optical drive can read only formats that the console’s software knows how to recognize and launch. Sony lists supported PS5 game discs, compatible PS4 game discs, Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray media and several DVD formats, but explicitly excludes PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 software discs. Therefore, inserting a PS2 disc into a standard PS5 is not a valid drive test.
Sony’s supported-media list includes PS5 game discs, compatible PS4 game discs, Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray BD-ROM, BD-R and BD-RE, DVD-ROM, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW and AVCHD, subject to the qualifications in the safety guide. A PS2 game disc is outside that list even if the disc surface looks perfect and the drive spins it.
That distinction matters on a modded console. A jailbreak may permit homebrew applications, but it does not make every disc format part of the official operating system. PS5SX2 must provide its own emulator, mounting and disc-dumping path. If that application is not running, or if its physical-disc option is disabled, the console behaves like a normal PS5 for this purpose.
Use this troubleshooting sequence
- Confirm the software path. Decide whether you are testing the disc from the ordinary PS5 interface or from PS5SX2. If you are not inside PS5SX2, stop treating a PS2 disc as supported PS5 media.
- Test the drive with supported media. Insert a PS5 game disc, a compatible PS4 game disc, a Blu-ray or a DVD. A supported disc gives you useful evidence about the drive; a PS2 disc does not.
- Check orientation and condition. Reinsert the disc with the label and data sides correctly oriented for your console model. Look for fingerprints, dirt or obvious surface contamination. Clean it gently with a soft, clean cloth, then try again.
- Repeat with another supported disc. One damaged or unreadable disc can mislead you. Sony’s guidance is to test another game, Blu-ray or DVD after the basic checks.
- Observe the exact symptom. Note whether the console displays an error, repeatedly spins up, ejects the disc, shows no icon, or whether PS5SX2 detects the disc but stops during dumping or boot. These observations separate detection, dumping and game-start failures.
- If supported media also fails, follow Sony’s software procedure. Use Safe Mode’s “Clear Cache and Rebuild Database” option as Sony directs. Escalate to repair support if the problem remains.
- If supported media works, return to the PS5SX2 checks. On a jailbroken system, a working drive plus a rejected PS2 disc points more strongly to the emulator path, its settings or title compatibility than to a general optical-drive failure.

The first row is an inference from Sony’s format list, not a Sony diagnosis of your particular console. It is why a PS2 disc should not be used as the sole evidence for a hardware fault.

How to check PS5SX2 when the drive passes supported-media tests
PS5SX2’s physical-disc support is not an automatic switch exposed by the standard PS5 menus. The project describes a native app for a jailbroken PS5 with named helper and mounting components, plus a user-supplied PlayStation 2 BIOS. The BIOS and games are not bundled with the project. Use only games and BIOS files you are legally entitled to use, and follow the project’s current documentation for your exact jailbreak and build.
Verify the application and build
Make sure PS5SX2 itself is installed and launches successfully. The physical-disc function was documented as experimental and off by default in the release information available on October 13, 2026. A build without that code, or a build whose option is disabled, will not respond to an inserted PS2 disc in the way you expect.

Check the release identifier and installation date before comparing your result with a video or forum post. A guide written for another build may show different menus, helper names or mounting steps. Do not assume that updating the emulator, jailbreak or system components independently leaves all three combinations compatible.
Check the required helper and mounting components
The developer lists helper and mounting components as prerequisites. If one is missing, incompatible with your firmware or not active when PS5SX2 starts, the emulator may be unable to access the optical drive. Recheck the project’s requirements for your current release rather than assuming that a previous setup still applies after an update.
Confirm each prerequisite individually: installation completed without an error, the component is the version required by the emulator, and it is running before you start the physical-disc function. If documentation gives an order of operations, follow it. A disc inserted too early may be handled by the standard PS5 interface rather than by PS5SX2.
Confirm the BIOS requirement
PS5SX2 requires a user-supplied PS2 BIOS. A missing, invalid or incorrectly selected BIOS can prevent games from booting even when the application detects the disc. The project does not bundle the BIOS, so this is a separate setup responsibility.
A BIOS problem generally belongs to the boot stage, not the initial optical-detection stage. If the app never sees the disc, fix the build, option and mounting prerequisites first. If it identifies or dumps the disc but stops before the game starts, verify the BIOS selection and file validity using the project’s instructions.
Enable physical-disc handling only where documented
The release notes describe the physical-disc path as off by default. If your build exposes a setting for it, enable it according to the project’s instructions, restart the application if required, and insert the disc only after the emulator is ready. Do not assume that a setting shown in a guide for another release exists in yours.

Change one documented setting at a time and record the result. That makes it possible to return to a known configuration if a later change causes a new error.
Separate disc detection from game compatibility
There are two different failure points: PS5SX2 may fail to detect or dump the disc, or it may detect the disc but fail to run the particular game. The project says compatibility work is continuing, so a failed title launch does not establish that the optical drive or the entire emulator is broken. Test another legally owned PS2 title only if the project’s documentation supports that test and you understand that results can vary by game.
A successful dump followed by a failed launch is useful evidence: the drive and mounting path performed at least part of their job. Conversely, a failure before detection tells you little about title compatibility. Keep those stages separate when asking for help or reporting a bug.

Cleaning and handling the disc safely
Sony recommends a soft, clean cloth for dirt and fingerprints. Wipe gently rather than using abrasive material, liquid cleaners or force. Cleaning can remove surface contamination; it cannot make an unsupported PS2 format become officially compatible with a standard PS5, and it cannot correct an emulator configuration problem.

Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth and avoid adding scratches while wiping. If the disc remains unreadable in PS5SX2, compare the result with another supported disc before concluding that the PS2 disc itself is defective. A low-cost soft microfiber disc-cleaning cloth is an appropriate accessory for this step, but it is not a compatibility upgrade and should not be presented as one.
Do not force a disc out of the console if it becomes stuck. Sony specifically warns against forcibly pulling a disc. Use the console’s documented removal procedure or seek service instead. Forcing the tray or spindle can turn a software or format question into mechanical damage.
Using Safe Mode without creating a larger problem
Safe Mode belongs in the troubleshooting path when supported PS5 games or optical media also fail. Sony’s listed procedure includes “Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.” Follow Sony’s current on-screen instructions for entering Safe Mode and selecting that option.
Use this step after checking insertion orientation, cleaning the disc and trying more than one supported title or video disc. It is intended to address system-side issues identified by Sony’s troubleshooting flow; it cannot add PS2 support to the official operating system.

This is a destructive step: it deletes console information. Back up anything you need and understand the data-loss consequence before selecting it. Reinstalling system software will not add official PS2 disc support, so it is not an appropriate first response to a PS2-only failure.
If Sony’s troubleshooting steps do not restore reading of supported media, Sony directs users to PlayStation Repairs. At that point, provide the results of your supported-disc tests and describe whether the failure affects games, Blu-ray discs, DVDs or all of them. Do not describe a PS2-only rejection as proof that the drive needs replacement.
Common mistakes that lead to the wrong diagnosis
Assuming a jailbreak changes Sony’s format list
A jailbroken console can run software that the retail system cannot, but the normal PS5 software still does not officially launch PS2 discs. The modification and the emulator are separate from Sony’s documented compatibility.
Treating every PS5SX2 failure as a bad disc
Physical-disc handling is experimental. An absent option, an off-by-default setting, a missing helper component, an invalid BIOS or a title-specific compatibility issue can all produce a failed launch.

Resetting the console before testing supported discs
A full reset deletes console information and cannot turn a PS2 disc into supported media. Test supported games, Blu-ray discs and DVDs first, then use the least destructive Sony procedure that fits the symptoms.
Using a PS2 disc as the only drive test
Because PS2 format software is excluded from standard PS5 disc support, failure with that format alone is expected. A supported PS5 or PS4 game disc, Blu-ray or DVD is the meaningful comparison.
Forcing a stuck disc
Pulling a disc out by force can cause additional mechanical damage. Follow Sony’s removal guidance or obtain service.
Assuming a successful dump guarantees a playable game
Dumping and emulation are separate stages. PS5SX2 can potentially read the physical media yet still fail to boot a title because compatibility remains under development. Report which stage failed rather than simply saying that the disc “doesn’t work.”
When a drive fault becomes more plausible
A drive problem becomes more plausible when multiple supported media types fail consistently, not merely when one PS2 disc is rejected. Record which supported formats you tested and whether the console displays an error, makes unusual mechanical sounds or fails to recognize discs at all. Those observations help distinguish a broad hardware problem from the expected PS2 format limitation or a PS5SX2 compatibility issue.
If supported discs fail after cleaning, reinsertion and Sony’s Safe Mode cache/database procedure, use PlayStation Repairs. Do not open the console or attempt an internal repair unless you have the appropriate technical expertise and accept the warranty and safety risks; Sony’s support route is the appropriate next step for unresolved supported-media failures.
There is no sound basis for assigning a fixed repair price from the symptom “PS2 disc rejected.” A PS2-only failure is normally explained by format support, while a repair estimate depends on what happens with supported media and on Sony’s service assessment.

This comparison avoids promising performance, firmware support or a particular game result that has not been documented. It also explains why a console can pass every Sony drive test and still fail to launch a PS2 title through PS5SX2.
Current-status and compatibility limits
Sony’s PS2 disc exclusion is an official documented position. PS5SX2’s physical-disc behavior is different: it is community-developed, experimental, disabled by default in the release information reviewed on October 13, 2026, and subject to change. Its requirements, supported jailbreak configurations and game compatibility may change as new builds are released.

For that reason, avoid conclusions such as “the PS5 can play all PS2 discs” or “this title is guaranteed to work.” The accurate conclusion depends on the path: normal PS5 software does not support PS2 discs; PS5SX2 may provide an experimental route on a suitably jailbroken console, provided its current prerequisites and title compatibility allow it.

Can a regular PS5 play an original PS2 disc?
