The first question is whether the PS5 is actually running a PS2 homebrew emulator. A PS5 using ordinary Sony system software does not officially play PlayStation 2 game discs, so an “unsupported disc” message is expected in that configuration. The console’s ability to read certain DVD formats does not add PS2 game support.
On a jailbroken PS5, a project such as PS5SX2 is a separate software stack with its own payloads, BIOS, game files, model and firmware requirements. Use the setup checks below first, then apply Sony’s disc troubleshooting steps to supported media so you can distinguish a homebrew compatibility problem from a damaged disc or failing drive.
Why won’t my PS2 disc work on a jailbroken PS5?
There are two different failure paths that look similar on screen:
- Stock software: Sony’s PS5 safety documentation says PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 format software cannot be played from disc. The failure is normal and does not prove that the disc or optical drive is defective. The same guide lists several DVD formats as supported media, but that is separate from support for PS2 game software. Sony’s PS5 Disc Web Safety Guide is the controlling reference for the stock console.
- Jailbroken homebrew: an emulator such as PS5SX2 may provide a way to run PS2 software, but it is not an official PS5 disc feature. Its setup depends on additional jailbreak components, a user-supplied PS2 BIOS and user-supplied game files. The project describes compatibility as evolving and warns that its tested games are not a guarantee for every title, model or firmware.
Do not begin by repeatedly cleaning a PS2 disc if the console has booted into stock software. First establish which software environment is running, because cleaning cannot add a format that Sony does not support and cannot repair an incomplete emulator setup.

Stock PS5 versus jailbroken homebrew
| Console state | PS2 disc behavior | Useful next check |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary Sony system software | PS2 software from disc is officially unsupported | Confirm that the symptom is expected; test a supported Blu-ray or DVD if you are checking the drive |
| Jailbroken PS5 with PS5SX2 or similar homebrew | Depends on the emulator’s documented setup and compatibility | Verify payloads, BIOS, game files, model and firmware against the current project documentation |
Confirm that the intended homebrew setup is active
A jailbreak is not necessarily active after every boot. If the console has restarted into the normal dashboard without the payloads and mounts required by the emulator, the PS5 will behave like a stock machine and reject PS2 software.
- Check the current boot state. Make sure the jailbreak has been applied for this session rather than assuming that a previous successful launch remains active after a restart or shutdown.
- Open the current PS5SX2 setup instructions and release notes at the PS5SX2 project repository. The project’s documented path includes the PS5SX2 Helper payload loaded with kstuff and ShadowMountPlus.
- Confirm that the helper and the other required components were loaded in the order and manner specified by the release you are using. Homebrew projects can change their payload requirements, so an older tutorial may describe a configuration that no longer matches the current build.
- Verify that the emulator can see the user-supplied PS2 BIOS and game files it requires. PS5SX2 does not include a BIOS, games or keys; the repository lists those files as the user’s responsibility.
- Only after those checks, retry the game through the emulator’s documented launch path. A PS2 disc inserted into the standard PS5 interface is not automatically converted into an emulator-ready game image.
If the project cannot detect its helper, BIOS or game files, treat that as a homebrew setup problem rather than evidence of a bad optical drive. Capture the exact project release, PS5 model and firmware before changing anything, because those details determine whether the documented configuration applies.
Can a PS5 read PS2 discs, or only DVDs?
The optical media and the software format are separate questions. Sony lists DVD-ROM, DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW among media that a PS5 can read. The same official safety guide separately excludes PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 format software from disc playback. Therefore, seeing a DVD recognized by the console does not mean a PS2 game disc can launch in the normal PS5 interface.

Inspect and clean the PS2 disc safely
Physical condition still matters when you are testing media that the console officially supports, and a damaged PS2 disc can also prevent a homebrew workflow from obtaining readable data. Sony identifies dirt, scratches, recording quality and manufacturing variation as factors that can affect disc playback. Inspect the disc under a bright light before changing software settings.
Reject discs with physical damage
- Do not use a cracked or deformed disc.
- Do not use a disc that has been repaired, has stickers attached, or is not circular.
- Do not insert an 8 cm disc.
- Look for deep scratches, cloudy areas, peeling labels or residue that could make the disc unstable or difficult to read.
A disc that is visibly unsafe should not be used as a drive test. A failed read from that disc cannot tell you whether the console is healthy.
Clean from the center outward
- Hold the disc by its outer edge and center hole so you do not add fingerprints to the data surface.
- For fingerprints or light dirt, use a clean, soft cloth.
- For a dirty or scratched DVD or Blu-ray, use a lint-free cloth intended for optical discs.
- Wipe in straight strokes from the center toward the outer edge. Do not scrub in a circular path around the disc.
- Let any moisture evaporate completely, then reinsert the disc and test again.
Cleaning is a media-care step, not a compatibility fix. It cannot make stock PS5 software launch a PS2 game and cannot correct an unsupported firmware or emulator configuration.
Test another supported disc to isolate the drive
One PS2 disc produces too many possible explanations: unsupported format, incomplete homebrew setup, physical damage or a general optical-drive problem. Sony recommends trying another game, Blu-ray Disc or DVD. Choose media that Sony lists as supported and that you know is in good condition.

| Test result | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| A supported PS5 game, Blu-ray or DVD reads normally | The drive can read at least that supported media and a PS2-disc failure may be format or homebrew related | It does not prove that PS5SX2 supports your PS2 title, model or firmware |
| Several different supported discs fail | A broader disc-drive or system problem becomes more likely | It does not turn PS2 software into an officially supported format |
| Only one visibly dirty or scratched disc fails | That disc’s condition is a plausible cause | It does not prove the optical drive is defective |
Do not use burned discs or audio CDs for this test. Sony states that PS5 consoles cannot play burned discs or audio CDs, so those results would not be a valid drive diagnosis.
Follow Sony’s troubleshooting sequence for supported media
Use this sequence when a supported PS5 game, Blu-ray or DVD is not being read. Sony advises reinserting the disc after each step so you can see whether the change helped.
- Insert the disc with the correct orientation. When the PS5 is vertical on its stand, Sony says the labeled side should face left as you insert it. If the console is horizontal, follow the orientation shown by the console’s slot and manual.
- Remove and inspect the disc. Check for cracks, deformation, stickers, non-circular shape, heavy dirt or scratches. Do not continue with media that could damage the mechanism.
- Clean the disc. Use a soft cloth for fingerprints and a lint-free optical-disc cloth for dirty or scratched DVD/Blu-ray media. Wipe from the center toward the edge.
- Try another supported disc. Use a known-good PS5 game, Blu-ray Disc or DVD. This separates a single-disc problem from a console-wide reading problem.
- Use Safe Mode’s “Clear Cache and Rebuild Database” option. Start the PS5 in Safe Mode, select the option with that exact label, and allow the process to finish. Then reinsert the supported disc.
- Consider reinstalling system software only as a later step. Sony warns that reinstalling system software deletes all information on the console. Back up anything you need and follow Sony’s current instructions before choosing this destructive option.
- Contact PlayStation Repairs if supported media still fails. Sony directs users to PlayStation Repairs when the documented sequence does not resolve a persistent disc-reading problem. Use the support flow at How to troubleshoot disc issues on PS5 consoles.
These steps are for supported media and general drive diagnosis. They do not make PS2 game discs officially playable on stock software, and they do not replace the PS5SX2 project’s own setup instructions.

Required files and components
- A jailbroken PS5 compatible with the project’s current release.
- The PS5SX2 Helper payload loaded with kstuff.
- ShadowMountPlus and any other components called for by the release documentation.
- A PS2 BIOS supplied by the user.
- PS2 game files supplied by the user.
The repository explicitly says it does not include BIOS files, games or keys. If the emulator starts but cannot find one of these items, correct the file path or payload setup described in the project documentation before diagnosing the optical mechanism.
Model and firmware matter
The project’s tested examples cover specified PS5 and PS5 Pro models and firmware versions. Its table is not a universal compatibility matrix; firmware versions that are not listed have not been tried in the documented table. Record your exact model designation and system-software version, then compare them with the current repository notes rather than relying on a video or post written for a different release.
Game tests are not guarantees
PS5SX2’s tested-game section warns that results can change and that its examples are not a compatibility guarantee. A game that worked for another user may fail on your firmware, model or emulator build. Conversely, a failed title does not by itself prove that the PS5 drive is broken. Treat the project’s compatibility information as a moving target and retest after applying the current documented setup.

The available project documentation does not provide a complete, current official matrix for physical PS2 CD/DVD media or external optical-drive compatibility. Do not treat a particular disc type, external drive model or workaround as established unless the current primary project documentation specifically confirms it. The safest diagnostic path is to separate supported-media drive testing from the emulator’s documented game-file workflow.

Use the error message as a branch, not a verdict
“Unsupported disc” or no PS2 launch option
On stock software, this is consistent with Sony’s stated limitation on PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 format software. Confirm the console is actually running the jailbreak and emulator setup before interpreting the message as a hardware failure.
The emulator opens but the game does not appear
Check the user-supplied BIOS and game-file locations, the helper payload, kstuff and ShadowMountPlus. Also verify that the game format and title are handled by the current PS5SX2 build. The repository’s tested titles are examples, not a promise that every game will load.
A supported DVD, Blu-ray or PS5 game also fails
Repeat Sony’s physical inspection and cleaning steps, test more than one known-good supported disc, then use Safe Mode’s “Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.” Persistent failure across supported media is the point at which PlayStation Repairs becomes appropriate.

Only the PS2 disc fails
That pattern does not isolate the cause. The disc may be unsupported under stock software, outside the emulator’s tested compatibility, physically damaged or affected by a setup issue. Use a supported disc for the drive test and use PS5SX2’s current notes for the homebrew test.
When is the PS5 disc drive probably broken?
A single PS2 disc is insufficient evidence. A stronger hardware indication is repeated failure with multiple clean, undamaged media that Sony lists as supported, including a PS5 game, Blu-ray Disc or DVD, after the orientation, cleaning and Safe Mode steps. Sony’s support guidance directs users to PlayStation Repairs when those measures do not resolve the issue.
Before seeking service, record which supported discs were tested, whether the console was vertical or horizontal, the exact on-screen error and whether the emulator was active. This information helps separate a repeatable drive symptom from a PS2-format or homebrew-only limitation.
Quick Recap
A practical decision path
- Is the console in stock software? If yes, PS2 disc playback is unsupported; stop treating the symptom as a drive diagnosis.
- Is the jailbreak and emulator stack active? If no or uncertain, reload the documented helper and supporting components.
- Are the BIOS and game files present and visible to the emulator? If not, fix the homebrew file setup.
- Does a clean, supported PS5 game, Blu-ray or DVD read? If yes, focus on PS2SX2 compatibility, game files and firmware. If no, follow Sony’s disc sequence.
- Do several supported discs still fail after Safe Mode troubleshooting? Use PlayStation Repairs rather than repeatedly testing the same PS2 disc.
What you should and should not conclude
- Supported DVD recognition does not equal PS2 support. Media-format support and PlayStation software-format support are separate.
- Jailbreak status changes the diagnostic context. The emulator’s payloads, BIOS, game files, model and firmware all matter.
- One failed PS2 disc does not prove a broken drive. Use multiple supported discs to test the hardware.
- Cleaning has a limited purpose. It can address dirt on supported optical media, but it cannot add software compatibility.
- Homebrew compatibility can change. PS5SX2’s tested games and configurations are not guarantees.
- Reinstalling system software is destructive. Sony says that option deletes all information, so it belongs late in the supported-media troubleshooting sequence.
