Most Home Assistant–Proxmox VE failures fall into one of five areas: the Home Assistant host cannot reach the Proxmox API, the server or realm is entered incorrectly, the password or API token is invalid, the account lacks a privilege for the requested action, or TLS certificate verification fails. Start with reachability and the integration fields, then check authentication and permissions, and only afterward investigate feature-specific entities. Finish by collecting a reproducible log and diagnostics package.

This guide applies to Home Assistant’s built-in Proxmox VE integration. It separates integration-specific requirements from general network troubleshooting so that a refused connection is not treated like a button-authorization problem.

Use the symptom to choose the first check

Do not change several settings at once. The first visible symptom usually tells you which layer failed. Use this map to select a starting point, then follow the detailed sections below.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Symptom First checks Evidence to collect
Setup fails or no entities appear Proxmox reachability, host/IP, port, realm and credentials; confirm at least one Proxmox node has a VM or container Setup error and Home Assistant logs
Connection refused or timeout Server and Proxmox service status; route, DNS, DHCP, host/IP and port 8006 Exact connection exception and network path from Home Assistant
Authentication error Username and realm syntax; password versus API-token fields; token expiration and privilege separation Redacted error log
Sensors work but buttons fail Privilege for the specific action, especially VM.PowerMgmt; snapshot privilege when applicable Failed action and assigned role or permission
Node update entity is unavailable Sys.Modify or PVEAdmin Entity state and effective permissions
SSL verification error Certificate validity, trust and hostname match; setup verification choice TLS error and certificate context

1. Prove that Home Assistant can reach Proxmox

A browser session on your laptop proves only that the laptop can reach Proxmox. The integration runs from the machine, virtual machine, container or network namespace hosting Home Assistant, so test from that same location whenever possible.

Confirm the server and service are available

  • Check that the Proxmox server is powered on and that the Proxmox web/API service is running.
  • Confirm the address entered in the integration is the address reachable from Home Assistant. A hostname that resolves on your workstation may resolve differently inside a Home Assistant container or virtual machine.
  • Use the documented default API port, 8006, unless your Proxmox installation deliberately uses another port.
  • Check routing, firewall rules, VLAN boundaries, DNS and DHCP leases between Home Assistant and the Proxmox host.

If you have shell access in the Home Assistant environment, test name resolution and a TCP connection to the chosen host and port from there. A timeout normally indicates filtering, routing or an unavailable service; an immediate refusal generally means the address is reachable but nothing is accepting connections on that port. Record the exact exception rather than paraphrasing it.

Home Assistant’s connection-error guidance states: “A connection error in the logs almost always means a device, service, or network on your side is unreachable, not a bug in Home Assistant.” Read the full Connection error FAQ when the failure is at this layer.

Distinguish an API reachability problem from discovery

When setup completes but entities are missing, verify that the Proxmox inventory contains at least one node with a virtual machine or container that the account can see. An empty or unauthorized inventory can look like a discovery failure even though the API connection itself succeeded. Keep this separate from the documented limitation that not every storage type is fully exposed through the Proxmox VE API; a missing storage metric is not proof that the entire integration is disconnected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Recheck every integration field

Open the Proxmox VE integration configuration and compare each value with the server’s actual settings. The integration accepts a hostname or IP address, port, username, SSL-verification choice, and either password authentication or an API token.

Host, port and SSL choice

  • Enter the Proxmox host name or IP that Home Assistant can resolve and route to.
  • Use port 8006 for a standard Proxmox API endpoint. A port typo produces the same broad “cannot connect” symptom as a firewall block.
  • Decide deliberately whether Verify SSL certificate should be enabled. Leave it enabled when the certificate is correctly trusted and named; investigate the certificate when verification produces a TLS error.

Username and realm

With password authentication, Home Assistant uses a Proxmox username together with its authentication realm. The setup form may ask for only the username, but the effective identity is written as username@realm. The common PVE realm is written username@pve. If the account belongs to a different realm, select Other and enter that realm exactly as configured in Proxmox. A correct password paired with the wrong realm is still an authentication failure.

Check the inventory context

If the form accepts the values but no entities are created, inspect the Proxmox side for visible nodes, virtual machines and containers. An account that can log in but cannot read any relevant object will not produce the same entity set as an administrator account. Do not grant broad access merely to make discovery appear successful; identify which object-level permission is missing.

3. Fix password and API-token authentication

The integration supports either a Proxmox password or an API token. Choose one credential type and put its values in the matching fields; entering a token secret in a password field, or entering the token ID where the secret is expected, creates a misleading login failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Password authentication

Verify the exact user name, realm and current password in Proxmox. Avoid using the root account for Home Assistant. A dedicated account limits the impact of a leaked credential and makes later permission audits understandable.

API-token authentication

An API token has two distinct pieces: the token identifier (ID) and its secret. The identifier is not the secret. Copy each value into the field requested by the integration without adding spaces or punctuation.

  • The secret is shown only once when the token is created. If it was lost, create a replacement token and update Home Assistant; there is no reliable way to recover the original secret from the integration.
  • Check whether the token is expired. An expired token must be renewed or replaced through the relevant Proxmox account and token settings.
  • Check privilege separation. With separation enabled, the token has only the permissions assigned to the token itself. With separation disabled, it inherits the parent user’s permissions.

A separate, revocable token avoids storing the Proxmox password in Home Assistant, but it adds token lifecycle work: expiration, replacement and token-specific permissions remain your responsibility. Treat the secret as a password. Redact it from screenshots, logs and support posts.

Interpret a 401 or similar authentication response

First confirm the realm and credential type, then verify the token ID, secret and expiration. If the user can log in interactively but the integration receives an authentication error, compare the API token’s effective permissions with the user’s permissions; privilege separation can make the two identities differ. Preserve the error status and timestamp for the log review, but never include the secret.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Match permissions to the operation that failed

Monitoring and control are separate authorization cases. A connection can be healthy while one button or entity remains unavailable because that operation requires an additional Proxmox privilege.

Monitoring sensors and binary sensors

The PVEAuditor role is typically sufficient for read-only monitoring. Use it as the starting point for a least-privilege account that needs node, VM or container status but no control actions. If a sensor is absent, verify that the account can read the corresponding object and that the object exists in the Proxmox inventory visible to that account.

Power buttons

Starting, stopping or rebooting a VM requires the power-management permission identified in the integration documentation as VM.PowerMgmt, or a role that includes it, such as PVEVMUser. If sensors update normally but a power button fails, treat that pattern as an action-authorization problem rather than a total connection failure. Identify the exact action that failed and inspect the assigned role and path permissions for that VM or container.

Snapshots

Snapshot creation requires VM.Snapshot or a role such as PVEVMAdmin. A user may therefore be able to start and stop a guest while still receiving an authorization error when creating a snapshot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Node update entity

If a node’s update entity is unavailable, the integration page identifies Sys.Modify or the PVEAdmin role as the needed level. This is intentionally more powerful than read-only monitoring. Grant it only when the Home Assistant account is meant to initiate or expose that update operation, and review the resulting scope.

After changing permissions

Verify the effective permissions in Proxmox, then reproduce the same action in Home Assistant. If the old authorization state is still cached, restart or reload the integration using your normal Home Assistant maintenance procedure, and test again. Record which permission changed and whether the failure moved from authorization to another layer.

5. Handle SSL and certificate verification errors carefully

The setup flow includes a Verify SSL certificate option. When verification is enabled and TLS negotiation fails, investigate the certificate rather than treating the error as a generic login problem.

Checks that explain a TLS failure

  • Confirm that the certificate is currently valid and has not expired.
  • Check that the certificate’s name matches the hostname entered in Home Assistant. A certificate issued for a DNS name will not necessarily validate when the integration is configured with an unrelated IP address.
  • Check whether the certificate authority is trusted by the Home Assistant environment, including the container or operating system trust store used by the integration.
  • Compare the exact TLS error with the hostname, port and verification setting recorded during setup.

The reviewed integration documentation does not provide a complete certificate-generation or trust-store recipe, so the correct fix depends on how your Proxmox certificate was issued and how Home Assistant is installed. Disabling verification can hide a trust problem and weakens protection against a man-in-the-middle attack; do not present it as a universal remedy. If you temporarily change the setting for diagnosis, document the change and restore verification after correcting the certificate or trust chain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Separate missing features from broken connectivity

Storage entities and metrics

The built-in integration documents that not all storage types are fully exposed through the Proxmox VE API. If node and guest entities work but a particular storage entity or metric is absent, check whether that storage type is covered by the API before changing network or credentials. API coverage limits are different from a failed connection.

Buttons that are present but unavailable

An unavailable or failing button usually means the account can read the object but lacks the privilege for that action. Use the operation-specific checks in the permissions section and test one action at a time. Do not “solve” a single button by making the account a full administrator unless the broader authority is actually required.

Entities absent after setup

Confirm that at least one Proxmox node contains a VM or container visible to the account. Then inspect the integration logs for object-discovery errors. If only a subset of guests is missing, compare their paths and ACLs with a guest that appears; this narrows the issue to object permissions rather than API reachability.

7. Enable debug logging and collect diagnostics

Once basic reachability, fields, credentials and privileges have been checked, collect evidence while reproducing one failure. Home Assistant’s configuration troubleshooting workflow recommends restarting once, examining logs if the problem persists, and reporting failures with useful evidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Focused evidence-gathering procedure

  1. Note the exact symptom, affected node or guest, action attempted, timestamp and whether read-only sensors still update.
  2. Enable debug logging for the Proxmox VE integration using Home Assistant’s integration debugging controls.
  3. Reproduce the failure once, preferably with a single button, entity refresh or setup attempt so the relevant entries are easy to identify.
  4. Disable debug logging after reproduction; continuous debug output can make later logs harder to read.
  5. Download the resulting Home Assistant logs.
  6. From the Proxmox VE integration or device page, download diagnostics when that option is available.
  7. Review every file before sharing it. Remove API-token IDs and secrets, passwords, internal hostnames, IP addresses, user names and other private infrastructure details.

Include the exact exception, HTTP status if present, Home Assistant version, installation type, Proxmox host and port, authentication method, affected action, and the permissions or role assigned to the account. State what still works—for example, “node sensors update, but reboot returns an authorization error.” That distinction prevents a responder from repeating already-settled network checks.

What different log patterns mean

  • Timeout, name-resolution failure or connection refused: return to server availability, route, DNS, firewall, host/IP and port 8006.
  • 401 or login rejection: verify realm syntax, password versus token fields, token ID and secret, expiration and privilege separation.
  • Permission or forbidden response only for one action: inspect the corresponding Proxmox privilege and object ACL.
  • TLS handshake, certificate or hostname error: inspect certificate validity, trust and name matching while keeping the verification choice explicit.
  • Successful API calls with missing storage data: compare the missing resource with the integration’s documented API-coverage limitation.

8. A disciplined recovery order

Use this order when several symptoms appear together:

  1. From the Home Assistant host, establish that the Proxmox server and API port are reachable.
  2. Correct the configured host, port and realm before changing permissions.
  3. Choose password or token authentication and verify the corresponding values.
  4. Use a dedicated account and grant the minimum role that matches the required monitoring or control actions.
  5. Resolve certificate trust or hostname problems if SSL verification is enabled.
  6. Test read-only sensors, then test one control action, then test snapshots or updates if those features are required.
  7. Enable debug logging and download diagnostics only after the preceding checks produce no explanation.

This sequence prevents a permission change from masking a routing problem and prevents a certificate workaround from hiding an incorrect hostname.

9. Version and support boundaries

The Proxmox documentation catalogue currently lists the Proxmox VE 9.x Admin Guide as version 9.2, last updated August 10, 2026: Proxmox Virtual Environment documentation. The Home Assistant integration page does not publish a tested Proxmox-version matrix in the documented material, so do not assume that every Home Assistant and Proxmox combination has been verified. When opening an issue, include both versions and the installation type.

The integration’s reported adoption figure—1.5% of active installations—is shown on its page without a measurement year or methodology. It is not useful for diagnosing an individual setup and should not be treated as a dated benchmark.

When to escalate

Escalate after you can show that the Proxmox endpoint is reachable from Home Assistant, the host and realm are correct, the credential is valid, and the account has the privilege required for the failed operation. Provide the redacted debug log, diagnostics file, exact error, versions, affected object and a concise list of tests that succeeded. Never publish an API-token secret. If the evidence points to a Proxmox API behavior or an unsupported storage type, consult the Proxmox documentation alongside the Home Assistant integration issue rather than treating it as a generic Home Assistant outage.
