Fix handheld gaming problems by diagnosing them in order: identify the exact symptom, restart and update the device and game, check requirements and files, separate a single-game fault from a system-wide fault, then investigate heat, drivers, power settings and hardware. Steam Deck, Windows handhelds and ROG Ally models do not use identical menus, so apply only the steps intended for your device.
Start by recording exactly what fails
Do not change several settings at once. Write down the handheld model, operating system, game title, launcher, and the point at which the problem occurs. Note any error text exactly as shown. Also record whether the symptom is a low or fluctuating frame rate, brief stutter, game closing to the desktop, a frozen image, a complete system freeze, an automatic restart, or a Windows system error.
- Scope: Does it happen in one game or in several unrelated games?
- Timing: Does it occur at launch, in one level or scene, when changing applications, or only after a long session?
- Recent changes: Did it begin after a game patch, operating-system update, BIOS or driver update, graphics-setting change, or installing another application?
- Conditions: Was the handheld unusually hot, connected to power, running on battery, or sitting on a soft surface?
This record determines which branch to follow and gives support staff information they can use. A game that closes while Windows remains responsive is a different problem from a device that freezes and reboots.

1. Restart both the game and the handheld
Exit the game normally if possible, then restart the handheld. A restart clears a stuck process and temporary resource pressure without changing your saved games or configuration. If the device is completely unresponsive, use the manufacturer’s documented forced-shutdown procedure rather than repeatedly holding the power button during normal operation.

2. Install supported updates
Install pending game updates through the game’s launcher. Install operating-system and device updates through the handheld’s supported update channel. On a Windows handheld, this includes Windows updates and the device maker’s approved firmware, BIOS and driver packages. Do not use an unrelated driver-download utility when the manufacturer provides model-specific packages.
If the issue started immediately after one update, note which component changed before installing more updates. The later rollback section explains how to handle a regression.
3. Compare requirements with the actual handheld
Read the game publisher’s minimum and recommended requirements and compare them with the handheld’s processor, graphics hardware, memory and operating system. A device near the minimum can still have launch or performance problems even when it technically meets the listed specification. Requirements are not a promise of a particular frame rate.

4. Verify the game’s files
If only one installed game is affected, use the launcher’s built-in file-integrity or file-verification function. This replaces damaged or missing files without requiring a complete reinstall. The exact label and menu location vary by launcher; use its supported verification command rather than deleting folders manually. Restart the game after the check completes.

These patterns are diagnostic clues, not a scoring system. A game-specific fault can expose a driver problem, and a system-wide problem can first appear in the most demanding game.
Test game settings without making the problem harder to diagnose
For a game that launches but runs badly, change one workload at a time and record the original value. Lowering the output resolution or graphics quality is a reasonable experiment because it reduces the amount of work the graphics hardware must perform. It is not a guaranteed fix, and a setting that improves one title may make another look worse or fail to address a CPU, heat or driver problem.
- Apply a modest resolution reduction and reproduce the same scene or activity.
- Reduce demanding visual options one at a time if the game exposes them, recording each change.
- Close unnecessary applications and overlays before testing so background activity does not obscure the result.
- Use the handheld’s normal, supported power or performance mode for the first comparison; do not assume the highest mode is safe or appropriate for every model.
- Restore settings that have no measurable benefit before trying another branch.
Compare like with like: the same save, location, camera view and duration. A short improvement followed by severe slowdown later points toward a different cause than a consistently low frame rate.

Check heat, airflow and background resource use
Look for a relationship between heat and slowdown
Observe whether the frame rate falls as the handheld gets hotter, whether the fan becomes unusually loud or changes behavior, and whether the problem appears only after an extended session. Steam’s hardware troubleshooting guidance treats a CPU slowdown that correlates with game slowdown as a useful overheating clue, not conclusive proof. Warm plastic alone does not establish thermal throttling.
Restore unobstructed airflow
- Place the handheld on a hard, stable surface rather than bedding, clothing or a cushion.
- Keep intake and exhaust openings clear of your hands, a case flap, dust and nearby objects.
- Move away from unusually hot surroundings and allow the device to cool before repeating the test.
- Check whether the fan starts and changes speed normally under load.
ASUS identifies blocked vents, dust, environmental conditions, resource use and fan wear as possible contributors to overheating, and recommends checking resource usage in Task Manager on applicable Windows devices. Review CPU, memory and disk activity while the game is running. An unrelated process consuming resources can create stutter without any defect in the game.
Clean only according to the device maker’s instructions
Do not blast the vents with a powerful compressed-air device such as an air compressor; ASUS warns that excessive pressure can damage fan blades. Follow the exact model’s cleaning guidance. Opening the handheld can create additional damage and may affect service or warranty terms, so leave internal cleaning or fan replacement to a qualified technician unless you are specifically equipped and authorized to do it.
Check power and performance modes carefully
Record whether the test is running on battery or connected to the charger, then repeat comparable tests using the handheld’s supported power or performance profiles. A mode change can alter heat, fan behavior and available resources, but the labels and limits differ by model. Use the manufacturer’s normal documented mode first, and change only one setting before reproducing the same scene. Do not assume that the most aggressive profile is automatically best; it may increase heat without addressing a file, driver or game-compatibility fault.
If performance changes only when the device is hot, prioritize airflow and diagnostics. If it is poor from the first launch in every mode, return to requirements, resolution, background load and official driver guidance rather than repeatedly switching profiles.
Windows handhelds: update the exact model, and handle regressions carefully
For a Windows handheld, open the manufacturer’s official support page for the precise model and revision. Install the listed Windows, BIOS, chipset and graphics-driver updates in the order and manner documented there. A package for a similar-looking model is not an acceptable substitute.
If poor performance or crashes began directly after a BIOS, Windows or driver update, identify that change in your notes. Use the manufacturer’s documented uninstall or rollback procedure for the affected component, when one is provided. Avoid mixing a rollback with several new driver packages; otherwise you will not know which change altered the symptom. After a rollback, restart and reproduce the original test before changing game settings.

System errors or unresponsiveness require the Windows stability guidance for the device, not only game troubleshooting. Capture error codes, event details or on-screen messages before dismissing them when possible.

Steam Deck: use Steam’s platform-specific path
Steam’s official “Steam Deck – Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide” places installing updates and restarting among the first software checks. Follow the Deck’s own update interface rather than applying Windows instructions. For an individual game, use Steam’s file-integrity check and compare the Deck’s hardware with the game’s published requirements.
If performance or stability problems continue, Steam documents an optional Beta channel as a platform-specific diagnostic and update path. Beta software can change system behavior, so treat it as a deliberate troubleshooting test, not a universal cure or a recommendation for Windows handhelds. If the supported checks do not resolve the issue, use Steam Support and provide the symptom record you made at the beginning.
ROG Ally settings are not universal handheld settings
ROG Ally models have device-specific controls documented by ROG Support. For example, the Ally FAQ describes a graphics-memory allocation option for supported Ally models. That setting should be changed only when the current model and software documentation explicitly supports it. Do not copy an Ally graphics-memory value to a Steam Deck or another Windows handheld, and do not change it merely because a forum post claims it improves every game.
Use the Ally’s current Armoury Crate, Windows, BIOS and driver controls as documented for your model. If the issue began after changing a model-specific option, return that option to its previous value before testing another change.

A title that closes during “Preparing to Launch,” displays a missing-file message or returns to the launcher before showing a scene should be treated first as a launch-path problem. Check the game’s requirements, install pending patches and run the launcher’s supported file-integrity check. Reinstalling is disruptive and should come after those checks unless the launcher specifically reports an unrecoverable installation.
Note whether other titles from the same launcher work. If they do, the affected game’s patch, compatibility layer, configuration or files become more relevant. If every title from the launcher fails while the operating system works normally, examine launcher updates, system resources and device drivers instead of repeatedly reinstalling one game.

Avoid common troubleshooting dead ends
Do not install a generic “PC optimizer,” random driver package or registry cleaner as a first response. Such tools can add another variable and are not a substitute for the handheld maker’s supported updates or diagnostics. Likewise, a cooling stand, replacement fan or other accessory is not a universal remedy for an undiagnosed fault. First establish whether airflow, fan behavior or resource use actually correlates with the slowdown.
Do not delete game folders manually when the launcher offers file verification, and do not change BIOS or graphics-memory values copied from a different model. Keep a short log of every change and its result. If a change makes the symptom worse, restore the recorded original value before proceeding.

A game closing by itself is not equivalent to a complete device failure. If Windows becomes unresponsive, the handheld restarts, or a system error appears, stop treating the title as the only suspect. Follow the manufacturer’s safe restart instructions, record the error and run the available hardware and system diagnostics.
- Diagnostics report a fan or hardware problem: stop stressing the device and contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider.
- Diagnostics pass but multiple games still trigger freezes: complete the supported Windows, firmware and driver checks, then contact device support with your test record.
- The issue disappears after cooling or moving the device: continue investigating airflow and fan behavior rather than assuming the game is fixed.
- The problem persists after supported software troubleshooting: request service instead of repeatedly applying unrelated tweaks.
System Restore, a factory reset or an operating-system reinstall belongs near the end of the process. Back up saves and personal files first, read the model-specific instructions, and understand that reset or reinstall can remove applications, settings and data.

Why does my game run badly on a handheld even though it meets the minimum requirements?
Minimum requirements are a baseline, not a guaranteed frame rate. A handheld near that baseline may still have launch or performance problems. Compare the exact processor, graphics hardware, memory and operating system, then test a lower resolution or graphics workload while reproducing the same scene.

Yes, when the launcher provides a supported integrity or verification command. It can replace missing or damaged files without deleting the entire installation. Reinstall only after verification, updates and requirements checks, or when the launcher reports an unrecoverable installation.

How can I tell whether heat is causing stutter?
Look for a repeatable relationship: performance worsens during a long session, the device becomes hotter, or fan behavior changes at the same time. Check airflow and CPU or memory use, and use available monitoring or diagnostics. Warm casing alone does not prove thermal throttling.
Should I use Steam Deck Beta to fix every handheld?
No. Steam documents its Beta channel as an optional, platform-specific path for Deck performance or stability testing. It is not a universal Windows-handheld fix. Use the update channel and support instructions intended for your own device.
Can I copy an ROG Ally graphics-memory setting to another handheld?
No. ASUS documents that option for supported ROG Ally models and software. Graphics-memory controls, menus and safe values are not interchangeable among handhelds. Check the current model’s official documentation before changing such a setting.
What should I do if the whole handheld freezes or restarts?
