If Gears of War: E-Day became slow, stuttery, unstable, or prone to asset pop-in after you installed a mod, first prove whether the mod is involved: remove it with its documented uninstall method, reproduce the same scene with identical settings, and then add changes back one at a time. This isolates a mod conflict from an ordinary CPU, GPU, storage, driver, game-version, or network problem.

Start by identifying the exact symptom

“Poor performance” can describe several different failures. Treating all of them as an FPS problem leads to the wrong fix. Reproduce the issue and classify it before changing files or buying hardware.

Symptom What you will notice First comparison
Consistently low frame rate The game is slow almost continuously in a scene. Compare a clean installation and check whether the CPU or GPU is the limiting component.
Intermittent stutter Short hitches or uneven motion occur even when the average FPS looks acceptable. Compare frame-time consistency, asset loading, storage, and mod behavior.
Asset pop-in or long loading Textures, geometry, or other content appears late; level transitions take unusually long. Check the installation drive and whether the symptom disappears without the mod.
Freeze or crash The game stops responding, closes, or returns to the desktop. Check the latest log and the graphics driver, then test a clean baseline.
Online delay Players or actions appear to react late while local camera movement remains smooth. Separate network latency from rendering performance; a graphics mod will not necessarily cause or cure latency.

Write down the GPU, CPU, operating-system build, E-Day version, graphics-driver version, resolution, graphics preset, upscaler, frame cap, every installed mod and its version, and the game update after which the problem began. Also note the exact scene, game mode, and whether the issue occurs offline or online. This record prevents a supposedly successful fix from being confused with a different test.

Build a clean, repeatable baseline

A clean comparison is the strongest evidence you can collect. It is a diagnostic method, not proof that any particular mod is defective.

  1. Save the current configuration. Record your settings and copy any configuration file that a mod created so you can restore it later. Do not overwrite the only copy of a custom file.
  2. Disable or remove the recently added mod. Use the mod’s documented uninstall process. If it installed files outside the game’s normal mod directory, follow its instructions rather than deleting random files.
  3. Restart the game. A restart clears state that can survive a menu change. If the mod changed an engine configuration file, restart after restoring the original file.
  4. Repeat the same test. Use the same save, location, camera route, resolution, preset, upscaler, frame cap, and game mode. Test long enough to encounter the original hitch or loading event.
  5. Compare more than the average FPS. Note frame-time consistency, visible hitching, asset pop-in, loading duration, CPU and GPU utilization, temperatures, and whether a crash occurs.
  6. Add changes back individually. Re-enable one mod, reproduce the test, and record the result before enabling another. If several mods were installed together, this is the only practical way to identify an interaction.

If performance improves only after a particular mod is removed, keep that result tied to the exact mod version, game version, and settings. A later game patch or mod update can change the outcome.

Do not stack engine-configuration tweaks

One E-Day Engine.ini mod author explicitly advises users not to combine that file with other optimization mods and to delete the file if performance becomes worse. The instruction appears on the author’s Nexus Mods post. Treat it as that author’s compatibility guidance, not independent evidence that the tweak improves performance on every system.

When testing an Engine.ini change, use one version of the file at a time. Keep the original backed up, remove competing edits, and test the same scene before and after. If the result is worse, restore the original rather than adding another “fix” on top of it. A configuration stack can make it impossible to know which value is responsible for a hitch or crash.

Some coverage has repeated mod authors’ claims of performance gains without testing them. Windows Central, for example, described such claims while noting that the writer had not tested the mods. Those reports are leads for controlled testing, not demonstrated fixes or recommendations.

Check E-Day’s built-in graphics choices before editing files

The official support material documents graphics-mode choices that trade higher frame rate for higher image quality in Campaign, Horde Siege, and Versus. Open the game’s Settings or Options menu and use the Video or Graphics section to compare those modes before changing configuration files. The support hub is Gears of War Support.

No single mode is established as best for every PC. For a useful comparison, change one variable at a time and hold the others constant:

Run Mods Graphics mode and preset Resolution and upscaler Frame cap What to record
A: baseline Disabled Your normal mode Original values Original value Average FPS, frame-time consistency, utilization, loading, and crashes
B: mod test One mod enabled Exactly the same Exactly the same Exactly the same The same measurements in the same scene
C: settings test Disabled Alternative built-in mode One deliberate change Same unless testing the cap Whether motion improves and what image-quality cost appears

Do not compare a modded run at 1080p with a clean run at 1440p, or a capped run with an uncapped run, and then attribute the difference to the mod. If generated-frame technology is enabled, document that too; the launch notes warn that the benchmark overlay can undercount because generated frames are excluded.

Check storage and hardware-specific conditions

Mechanical hard-drive installation

The August 3, 2026 open-beta FAQ says HDD installation was unsupported and could cause severe loading issues, missing assets, stuttering, and crashes. That is beta-era guidance, not a confirmed launch requirement, so it should be treated as a relevant condition rather than proof that every current HDD installation is unsupported. Read the qualification in the official open-beta FAQ.

If E-Day is on a mechanical HDD and your symptoms include delayed assets, long transitions, or streaming-related hitches, test the same clean baseline from an internal NVMe SSD if one is available. An SSD is a conditional remedy for that storage scenario, not a general mod-performance upgrade and not a guaranteed cure for a CPU- or GPU-bound problem. Move or reinstall the game using your launcher, then repeat the identical scene and settings comparison.

Intel Arc A580 and B580 checks

The same beta FAQ specifically advises Intel Arc A580 and B580 owners who report poor performance to verify that Resizable BAR and Above 4G Decoding are enabled in firmware. Apply this check only to those Arc models; it is not a universal instruction for every GPU. If either option is changed, follow the motherboard manufacturer’s firmware guidance and retest from a clean baseline.

CPU-limited systems

E-Day can be unusually CPU-heavy in some test systems. Tom’s Hardware tested 25 Intel and AMD CPUs and reported that a Ryzen 7 9800X3D delivered 42% higher performance than a Ryzen 5 7600X at 1080p High in its methodology. The same article observed 80% to 90% CPU utilization during its E-Day gameplay. These are results from that outlet’s tested systems, settings, and measurement process, not a prediction for every computer. See the complete methodology and results at Tom’s Hardware’s E-Day CPU benchmark.

A high CPU reading alone does not prove a mod is responsible. Compare the clean and modded runs at the same resolution and quality settings. If reducing resolution barely changes FPS while one or more CPU threads remain busy, the workload may be CPU-limited. If GPU utilization rises or falls substantially with resolution, the GPU is more likely to be limiting. Use those observations to decide whether further software isolation is warranted; do not buy a CPU or GPU before identifying the bottleneck.

Investigate crashes with logs and driver information

For a GPU crash, collect evidence before repeatedly changing settings. Epic’s general Unreal Engine guidance recommends checking the latest log for DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED or another error code, verifying the latest driver supplied by the GPU manufacturer, and recording reproducible steps. This is general Unreal Engine triage, not a confirmed E-Day-specific fix; the guidance is available in Epic’s GPU-crash documentation.

  1. Reproduce the crash once with all recently added mods disabled.
  2. Note the exact action immediately before the failure: loading a level, changing a mode, entering a combat area, or leaving a menu.
  3. Open the newest game log and search for the reported error code. Preserve the surrounding lines rather than copying only the final message.
  4. Record the installed driver version and whether the crash occurs with the current driver from the GPU manufacturer.
  5. Re-enable one mod and repeat the same action. If the error returns only then, report the mod and version together with the game and driver versions.

A crash that persists in the clean baseline should be investigated as a game, driver, hardware, or installation issue instead of being blamed on a mod merely because the mod was installed recently.

Account for launch-version caveats

The September 30 launch article says that playing the entire campaign without reloading checkpoints or restarting can lead to memory issues. When diagnosing a late-session slowdown or crash, deliberately reload a checkpoint or restart the game and see whether the symptom changes. Do not use an uninterrupted, hours-long campaign session as the only comparison between modded and clean configurations. The caveat is documented in the launch article.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

October 5 patch notes list general stability, performance, hardware-compatibility, and reporting improvements. They do not promise that every player’s stutter or crash is resolved. After updating, repeat the clean baseline and record the new game version instead of assuming that an old mod diagnosis still applies. The notes are at the official October 5 patch-notes page.

Make a report that can actually be reproduced

Whether you contact a mod author, the game support team, or a driver vendor, include:

  • Game version and platform or launcher.
  • CPU, GPU, system memory, operating-system version, and storage type.
  • Graphics-driver version.
  • Every mod name and exact version, including whether it changes Engine.ini or another configuration file.
  • Resolution, preset, graphics mode, upscaler, frame cap, and frame-generation state.
  • The exact location, game mode, save, and sequence of actions that triggers the problem.
  • Clean-versus-modded observations, including frame-time behavior, utilization, temperatures, loading, and crash frequency.
  • The relevant log error, such as DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED, if present.
  • Whether the behavior began immediately after a game or driver update.

This information lets someone reproduce the same condition instead of guessing from a screenshot of an FPS counter.

When an upgrade is—and is not—the right answer

An internal NVMe SSD is a reasonable targeted upgrade when the game is installed on a mechanical HDD and the symptoms match the beta FAQ’s storage-related warnings. It is not evidence-based to purchase a new CPU or GPU solely because a mod was installed. First establish whether the clean baseline is CPU-limited, GPU-limited, storage-limited, or affected by a driver or crash condition. If the problem remains unchanged after removing the mod and testing the relevant settings, the upgrade decision should follow that measured bottleneck rather than the timing of the mod installation.

A reliable troubleshooting order

  1. Classify the symptom as low FPS, stutter, streaming, crash, freeze, or network delay.
  2. Record the complete game, driver, hardware, settings, storage, mod, and version context.
  3. Remove recently added mods using their documented uninstall method.
  4. Reproduce the same scene with identical settings and compare frame-time behavior as well as FPS.
  5. Restore only one mod or configuration change at a time.
  6. Test E-Day’s built-in graphics modes before editing Engine.ini or stacking optimization files.
  7. Check the beta-qualified HDD and Intel Arc A580/B580 firmware notes when they match your hardware.
  8. For crashes, preserve the latest log, error code, driver version, and exact reproduction steps.
  9. Retest after current patches, while accounting for the uninterrupted-campaign memory caveat and the benchmark overlay’s treatment of generated frames.

The result should be a reproducible comparison, not a guess. Once a single change reliably moves the symptom, you can remove that change, seek a compatible version, or report a specific defect without confusing normal E-Day workload limits with mod behavior.
