If your Thunderbolt 5 enclosure appears on a Mac but its PCIe card does not, troubleshoot the connection in three layers: accessory approval and the Thunderbolt link, PCIe-card enumeration, and the card’s driver or application. Find the first layer that fails in System Information, then correct that layer before changing software.
Start with the exact Mac model and port, approve the accessory on Apple-silicon laptops, use a correctly rated Thunderbolt cable, connect the powered chassis directly, and inspect both the Thunderbolt and PCI sections of System Information. Only install card drivers after macOS can see the card as PCIe hardware.
What “not detected” means on a Thunderbolt PCIe setup
A Thunderbolt enclosure does not make every installed card automatically usable. The enclosure transports PCIe over Thunderbolt, and macOS must complete several separate hand-offs:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Accessory approval and Thunderbolt link: macOS must authorize the enclosure and establish a working link through a compatible port and cable.
- PCIe enumeration: the enclosure’s PCIe bridge and the installed card must appear to macOS as PCIe hardware.
- Driver and application support: the card’s driver, firmware and vendor software must support the Mac architecture and macOS release.
These layers produce different symptoms. A denied accessory may still receive power while passing no data. A visible enclosure with no card usually points to seating, auxiliary power, card compatibility or bandwidth constraints. A card visible under PCI but unusable in its application is usually a driver, firmware or application-support problem rather than a Thunderbolt-link failure.

1. Confirm that the Mac and port can use Thunderbolt 5
Do not assume that every USB-C connector on a Mac is a Thunderbolt 5 port. Apple lists Thunderbolt 5 ports on the following model groups:
| Mac model group | Thunderbolt 5 availability listed by Apple |
|---|---|
| Mac Studio | Models introduced in 2025 or later |
| 14-inch MacBook Pro | Models introduced in 2024 or later |
| 16-inch MacBook Pro | Models introduced in 2024 or later |
| Mac mini | Models with a Pro chip introduced in 2024 or later |
Check the exact model in Apple menu > About This Mac, then identify which physical ports support Thunderbolt. A USB-C port intended only for charging or ordinary USB data cannot carry the Thunderbolt PCIe connection required by an expansion chassis.
Approve the accessory on Apple-silicon laptops
When a new Thunderbolt accessory is connected to a Mac laptop with Apple silicon, unlock the Mac and wait for the accessory-connection alert. Choose Allow. If you choose Don’t Allow, Apple says the Mac will not recognise the accessory or give it access to data on the Mac; the enclosure can therefore appear powered while providing no usable data link.

To review the setting, open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessories. Reconnect the enclosure after changing the approval decision. Keep the Mac unlocked while testing so a pending approval prompt is not missed.

2. Remove cable, port and chain variables
Use a cable rated for Thunderbolt 5 when the enclosure and workload require Thunderbolt 5 bandwidth. A verified Thunderbolt 4 or Thunderbolt 3 cable can work with compatible equipment, but its bandwidth and feature limits may apply. A USB-C charging cable is not equivalent to a Thunderbolt cable and may provide power without carrying the PCIe data path.
- Shut down or disconnect the enclosure according to its instructions.
- Unplug docks, monitors, storage devices and other Thunderbolt accessories from the test path.
- Connect the powered enclosure directly to a Mac port that supports Thunderbolt.
- Use one known-good, appropriately rated Thunderbolt cable; do not add a USB-C hub, adapter or daisy-chain device.
- Reconnect the enclosure and wait for macOS to finish accessory detection before opening the card’s application.
Apple recommends direct connection when troubleshooting, checking that every device in a chain has power, and confirming that required software and firmware are installed. A chain can fail even when each individual device works alone, so direct connection is the fastest way to separate topology problems from card problems.
3. Verify enclosure and card power
Turn on the expansion chassis before evaluating detection. Confirm that its status indicators or fan behavior show normal operation, then check the card itself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Power the chassis from its specified mains supply and leave it on during the test.
- With the chassis powered down and disconnected, reseat the PCIe card so its connector is fully engaged and its bracket is secured.
- Attach every auxiliary-power lead required by the card. A card can be physically installed yet fail to enumerate when supplemental power is missing.
- Check that the chassis power supply can deliver the card’s requirements, including startup demand.
For scale, the Echo III Rackmount specification lists a 400 W power supply and a 6-pin auxiliary connector providing up to 75 W for cards that need supplemental power. Those figures describe that chassis, not a universal Thunderbolt requirement. A card that needs more power than the enclosure can provide may fail to appear or may reset intermittently.

4. Use System Information to identify the failed layer
System Information tells you whether the failure is before or after PCIe enumeration.
- Hold the Option key while opening the Apple menu.
- Choose System Information.
- In the sidebar, open Hardware > Thunderbolt and inspect the device tree.
- Then open Hardware > PCI and look for the installed card.
| What you see | Most likely failure layer | Next checks |
|---|---|---|
| Neither the enclosure/module nor the card appears under Thunderbolt | Approval, port, cable, power, chain or chassis firmware | Approve the accessory, use a direct connection, verify the port and cable, power-cycle the chassis, and check its firmware. |
| The enclosure or Thunderbolt module appears, but the card is absent under PCI | PCIe enumeration | Reseat the card, connect auxiliary power, verify card compatibility, and check whether the card is supported in that chassis. |
| The card appears under PCI, but the vendor application cannot use it | Driver, firmware, application or feature support | Install the exact vendor software for the Mac architecture and macOS release, restart as required, and check the card’s firmware. |
| The card appears and works, but performance is below its specification | Thunderbolt bandwidth or PCIe-link width | Check the card’s supported link width and the enclosure’s Thunderbolt bandwidth limits. |
Sonnet’s setup guidance uses the same split: the Thunderbolt device tree should show the Echo module, while the PCI view should show installed cards. If the module is absent, reconnect the Thunderbolt cable directly to the Mac before changing card software.
5. Check the card’s exact macOS and firmware support
Once the chassis is visible, read the card manufacturer’s compatibility list for the exact card model, Mac architecture and macOS release. “PCIe” describes the electrical interface, not guaranteed operating-system support. Compatibility documentation may specify:
- Apple-silicon, Intel or universal Mac support.
- A minimum macOS release or a maximum supported release.
- Required card firmware before the card can operate through Thunderbolt.
- A required auxiliary-power connection.
- Restrictions on using the card in an external PCIe chassis.
- Vendor software needed for proprietary functions.
Sonnet’s compatibility information, for example, identifies cards with special firmware requirements, cards that need auxiliary power and PCIe 4.0 x8 cards whose available bandwidth can be limited by a Thunderbolt link. A card can therefore be electrically present in System Information while operating below its internal PCIe rating or while a vendor application refuses to use it.

Understand bandwidth limits
Thunderbolt transports PCIe traffic through a cable and an enclosure bridge. The card’s slot may be physically x8 or x16, yet the external link can provide less usable bandwidth than an internal slot. This normally appears as reduced throughput after enumeration, not as a missing card. If the card disappears entirely, resolve power, seating and compatibility first; do not treat a bandwidth ceiling as a detection failure.
6. Install drivers only after hardware enumeration
Apple explains that Thunderbolt devices communicate through the PCIe interface and therefore use PCIe drivers with additional support for Thunderbolt features. macOS includes drivers for standard interfaces such as XHCI, AHCI, NVMe and FireWire. Proprietary card features require a vendor DriverKit extension on macOS 11 and later.
Follow this order:
- Confirm that the enclosure appears in Hardware > Thunderbolt.
- Confirm that the card appears in Hardware > PCI.
- Download the driver, control panel or firmware updater specified for the exact card model and your macOS version.
- Install it using the vendor’s instructions and restart the Mac or application when requested.
- Recheck System Information and then open the vendor application.
A generic driver utility cannot make an unsupported card work. If the card is absent from the PCI view, software installation is premature; return to seating, power, chassis compatibility and the Thunderbolt link.

- Use one supported Mac and record its exact model and macOS build.
- Use one powered Thunderbolt PCIe chassis and record its firmware version.
- Use one correctly rated cable connected directly to the Mac.
- Install one PCIe card, fully seated with all required power leads attached.
- Check the Thunderbolt view, then the PCI view, after every change.
- Record the exact point at which the device stops appearing.
If possible, install a known-compatible card in the chassis. If that card appears, the original card’s compatibility, firmware, power or physical condition becomes the primary suspect. Conversely, test the original card in another supported chassis. These cross-tests distinguish a chassis or cable fault from a card-specific problem without changing several variables at once.
Failure-specific recovery paths
The enclosure is missing from Thunderbolt
- Unlock an Apple-silicon laptop and approve the accessory.
- Confirm that the Mac model and selected port support Thunderbolt.
- Replace a charging-only USB-C cable with a certified Thunderbolt cable.
- Remove every dock and daisy-chain device, then connect directly.
- Verify chassis power and reconnect after a full power cycle.
- Check the chassis firmware and repeat the System Information check.
The enclosure appears but the PCIe card is missing
- Power down, reseat the card and secure its bracket.
- Attach the card’s auxiliary-power connector and verify the chassis supply rating.
- Check the manufacturer’s list for the exact card, Mac architecture, macOS release and chassis.
- Confirm that the card is supported externally and that required firmware is installed.
- Try a known-compatible card or another supported chassis to isolate the failing component.
The card appears but the application cannot use it
- Install the exact DriverKit-based driver or control software supplied for the card and macOS version.
- Update card firmware only with the vendor’s supported procedure.
- Restart the Mac or vendor application as instructed.
- Check whether the application supports Apple silicon, the current macOS release and an externally connected card.
The card works intermittently
- Check for a missing or loose auxiliary-power lead.
- Confirm that the chassis power supply can meet the card’s demand.
- Remove the Thunderbolt chain and test direct.
- Use a shorter or correctly rated cable and inspect both connectors.
- Watch System Information after a reset to see whether the card disappears from PCI or the enclosure disappears from Thunderbolt.
Choosing a remedy or replacement chassis
If the existing enclosure cannot support the card, compare replacements against the card rather than choosing by the Thunderbolt version alone.
| Comparison axis | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Detection support | Will both the chassis and the card appear in Apple’s Thunderbolt and PCI views? |
| Mac and macOS compatibility | Is the exact host model, architecture and macOS release listed by the chassis and card vendors? |
| Power | Does the enclosure provide the card’s required auxiliary power and total wattage? |
| Bandwidth | Will the Thunderbolt link limit the card’s PCIe generation or electrical link width? |
| Driver model | Does the card use a built-in protocol driver, or does it require a vendor DriverKit extension? |
| Topology | Can the setup be connected directly when a dock or chain is unreliable? |
A Thunderbolt 5 PCIe expansion chassis is the appropriate class of hardware for transporting a PCIe card externally. The Echo III Thunderbolt 5 upgrade path is one example; its published specifications illustrate why slot count, power supply capacity and auxiliary-card power must be checked alongside the Thunderbolt label. Confirm exact card compatibility before buying, because a faster link does not override unsupported firmware, insufficient power or an unavailable macOS driver.
What to record before contacting support
Provide a concise diagnostic record instead of only saying that the card is “not detected.” Include:
- Exact Mac model and whether it uses Apple silicon or Intel.
- macOS version and build.
- Chassis model and firmware version.
- PCIe card model, firmware version and required auxiliary power.
- Cable type and rating.
- Whether the accessory-approval prompt was allowed.
- Whether the enclosure appears under Hardware > Thunderbolt.
- Whether the card appears under Hardware > PCI.
- Whether direct connection works without a dock or other Thunderbolt devices.
This record identifies the failed layer and gives the chassis or card vendor enough information to check a documented compatibility or firmware condition.
