The fastest way to fix a crashing or slow PC game is to classify the failure before changing anything. A game that never opens usually points to requirements, damaged files, or a software conflict; a game that slows down over time points more toward workload, memory pressure, or heat; a blue screen or forced restart is a Windows or hardware problem, not an ordinary game crash.

Use the sequence below from least disruptive to most serious. Record the exact symptom, change one variable at a time, and retest the same scenario after each change. For title-specific error codes, anti-cheat messages, mods, or launcher behavior, use that game’s official support page in addition to these general Windows steps.

Start by identifying what actually failed

“My game crashes” can describe several different failures. The distinction determines which checks are relevant and prevents you from treating a system fault as a missing game file.

Symptom What it commonly indicates First check
The game never opens or remains at a launch message Missing or damaged files, incompatible requirements, a launcher problem, or a software conflict Compare the published requirements, then check the installation files
The game opens and immediately closes A startup file, graphics/API compatibility issue, mod, or background conflict Undo recent changes and test with unnecessary applications closed
The game crashes after a repeatable action or after a period of play A title-specific bug, heat buildup, memory pressure, or a driver/graphics interaction Record the action and elapsed time; check temperature and ventilation clues
Low frame rate or intermittent stutter without closing Graphics workload, background software, insufficient memory, or heat Lower settings temporarily and observe whether the symptom changes
Blue screen, gray screen, or a complete reboot A Windows, driver, hardware, or overheating problem Record the stop code and investigate the PC separately from the game

A crash to the desktop is not the same as a blue screen. Steam’s support guidance treats a forced restart or blue/gray screen as a computer problem rather than a normal Steam or game failure.

Step 1: Capture the failure before changing settings

Write down the information that can distinguish one cause from another. Include:

  • The exact error text, including any code or named file.
  • Whether the game never opens, opens and closes, crashes during a particular action, stutters, or reboots the computer.
  • How long the game runs before failing and whether the timing is repeatable.
  • The storefront or launcher, game version, and Windows version.
  • Recent changes: a game update, graphics-driver update, Windows update, newly installed hardware, or a mod.

Keep the first test reproducible. For example, use the same save, level, menu, or graphics-intensive scene after each change. If you alter several settings at once, you will not know which change mattered and may make the original problem harder to diagnose.

Step 2: Check requirements, storage, and installed files

Compare your PC with the game’s published requirements

Use the game’s publisher or storefront requirements as the authority for that title. Compare the minimum CPU, graphics processor, system memory, operating system, and storage requirements with the PC you are actually using. A machine at or just below a game’s minimum requirements may not launch it at all, according to Steam Support; meeting a minimum is not a promise of smooth performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the PC’s specification in Windows or in the manufacturer’s documentation rather than guessing from a model name. If the game has separate minimum and recommended specifications, treat them as different targets: minimum requirements address basic operation, while recommended requirements are the more useful reference for a stable frame rate at the publisher’s stated settings.

Leave room on the system drive

Microsoft’s general Windows maintenance guidance recommends keeping about 10–15% of a drive free, while noting that the exact amount varies by configuration. This is a system-maintenance recommendation, not a game-specific frame-rate guarantee. If the system or game drive is nearly full, remove or move data using normal Windows or launcher controls before drawing conclusions about the game itself.

Verify a Steam installation

When a Steam game has missing or damaged content, or crashes in a way that suggests an installation problem, use Steam’s built-in check:

  1. Open Steam and select Library.
  2. Right-click the game and choose Properties.
  3. Open Installed Files.
  4. Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for the check to finish.
  5. Launch the game again and reproduce the original failure before making another change.

Steam describes this process as checking whether the installed game files are correct. It is a Steam-specific instruction; do not assume the same menu or result exists in another launcher. For a non-Steam installation, use that platform’s equivalent file-repair feature or the game’s official support instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Account for mods and recent updates

If the problem began immediately after installing a mod, changing launch parameters, or updating the game, return to the last known working state where the platform allows it and consult the title’s support documentation. Keep the original error and the date of the change in your notes. A file check cannot establish that a mod or a newly introduced game bug is compatible.

Why won’t my game launch?

For a game that never reaches its menu, work through launch-specific checks in this order:

  1. Confirm that the PC meets the title’s minimum CPU, GPU, memory, operating-system, and storage requirements.
  2. Check the installation files using the launcher’s supported method; on Steam, use Verify integrity of game files.
  3. Close unnecessary applications and startup tasks, then try again.
  4. Undo a recently added mod, custom launch option, or hardware/software change, testing only one change at a time.
  5. Run dxdiag and compare the DirectX version with the game’s stated requirement.
  6. Read the game’s official support page for the exact error message, launcher version, and any title-specific prerequisite.

Do not treat a launch failure as proof that the graphics card is defective. The same symptom can be caused by an incomplete installation, an unsupported requirement, or a conflict that disappears when a background task is closed.

Why does my game crash on startup or shortly after opening?

Separate a repeatable startup crash from a later crash

If the game closes at the same logo, menu, or loading step every time, capture the wording and test the installation and graphics compatibility first. If it runs for several minutes and then fails, note the elapsed time and whether the fans, case, or frame rate change before the crash; that pattern is more useful for investigating heat or memory pressure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove reversible conflicts first

Close unneeded programs and temporarily stop unnecessary tasks before launching the game. Steam’s software-performance guidance specifically recommends removing unnecessary startup programs and manually stopping unnecessary applications through Task Manager. In Windows, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, review the running processes and the Startup apps area, and stop or disable only software you recognize and do not need for the test.

Retest after closing one category of software rather than disabling security or system components indiscriminately. If the crash disappears, re-enable items methodically to identify the conflict. If nothing changes, restore the normal startup state and move to the next diagnostic.

Use launch options cautiously

Steam’s performance guidance lists -autoconfig as an initial troubleshooting option. Treat it as a reversible experiment, not a universal fix: launch options are interpreted by each game, and a parameter that helps one title may do nothing or cause an unwanted configuration in another. Record the original launch options so you can remove the test cleanly.

How to check DirectX and graphics compatibility

DirectX supplies components that let games work with video and audio hardware. Microsoft documents the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, or dxdiag, as the way to see the installed DirectX version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows+R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type dxdiag and press Enter.
  3. On the System tab, read the DirectX Version entry.
  4. Compare that version with the DirectX or graphics API requirement published for the game.

If the game’s message names a particular graphics API, driver, or feature level, follow the official instructions from the game’s publisher and the graphics-hardware maker. There is no single, evidence-based driver-clean-install or rollback procedure that applies to every PC, and changing drivers without a specific reason can introduce another variable.

When a graphics update preceded the crash, record the previous and current driver dates or versions shown by the manufacturer’s supported tools, then use the manufacturer’s documented recovery path. Avoid downloading drivers or replacement files from unofficial mirrors.

How to fix stuttering or low FPS

Test whether the workload is the limiting factor

Lower the game’s graphics quality and resolution temporarily, then repeat the same scene. This is a diagnostic change, not proof that a particular component is defective:

  • If frame rate improves substantially, the original settings were placing more workload on the graphics or rendering pipeline than the PC could sustain.
  • If the frame rate barely changes, background software, memory pressure, a frame-rate cap, or a system-level problem may be more relevant.
  • If the game starts smoothly and becomes uneven after extended play, investigate heat and ventilation rather than changing every graphics setting at once.

Restore settings gradually after the test. Change one setting at a time and keep a note of the result so you can find the highest stable configuration rather than relying on a single dramatic preset change.

Reduce background load

Use Task Manager to close applications you do not need during the test and review startup programs that launch automatically. Background work can consume CPU time, graphics resources, memory, or disk activity. The exact program responsible cannot be inferred from low FPS alone, so identify it by closing recognized applications and retesting.

Consider memory pressure

Steam’s hardware guidance notes that low memory can produce repeated frame-rate hitches. If stutter coincides with many open applications or the system becoming generally unresponsive, close unnecessary programs and test again. Do not conclude that adding memory is the only answer without checking the game’s requirements and the PC’s actual usage pattern.

Look for heat, dust, and ventilation clues

Heat becomes a stronger suspect when the game degrades over time, fans become unusually loud, the case feels hot, or stutter appears before a crash. Steam identifies poor ventilation and dust accumulation on vents, fans, and heatsinks as possible contributors to overheating.

Inspect without disassembling unsafely

  • Check that the PC’s intake and exhaust vents are not blocked by a wall, fabric, or accumulated dust.
  • Look for visible dust on accessible vents and fans.
  • Follow the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s cleaning instructions, especially for a laptop.
  • Do not open a laptop or disassemble a desktop component if you are unsure how to do so safely or if doing so could affect a warranty.

An electric air duster or similar cleaning tool is relevant only when visible dust or restricted airflow is part of the symptom. Use it only in the manner specified by the device maker. Cleaning cannot repair missing game files, a DirectX incompatibility, or an unrelated software conflict, and it should not be presented as a guaranteed FPS boost.

Why does my PC restart when I play a game?

A complete reboot, blue screen, or gray screen is a system-level event. Microsoft describes a Windows stop error as a possible sign of an underlying problem in a driver, hardware, or the operating system. Steam also treats forced restarts separately from ordinary game failures.

Record the system evidence

  • Write down the exact stop code or message displayed on the blue screen.
  • Note whether the restart happened immediately, after a repeatable amount of play, or after performance had already deteriorated.
  • Record unusual heat, fan behavior, and any recent Windows, driver, hardware, or game changes.
  • Check whether other demanding applications produce the same failure; this comparison can show that the problem is broader than one title.

Do not respond to repeated stop codes with speculative registry edits or random stress tests. If the failure repeats, temperatures appear abnormal, or you suspect a failing component, use the PC or motherboard maker’s support channel or a qualified technician. Advanced crash-dump analysis may require expertise that a general game troubleshooting checklist cannot provide.

A symptom-led decision table

If you observe Do this first Then escalate to
No window or an immediate close Requirements check, installation-file verification, and a test with unnecessary applications closed DirectX check and the game’s title-specific support instructions
Crash at a fixed menu or loading step Capture the exact message, undo recent mods or launch changes, and verify files Publisher guidance for that error or update
Stutter that improves when settings are lowered Keep the lower setting for a controlled comparison and inspect background load Memory and heat investigation if the issue returns
Stutter or a crash after longer play Check airflow, visible dust, fan behavior, and memory pressure Manufacturer support if temperatures or stability remain abnormal
Blue screen or forced reboot Record the stop code and stop treating it as only a game problem Windows, driver, hardware, or qualified technical support

Keep the troubleshooting reversible

The safest order is to collect evidence, check requirements, verify files, close unnecessary software, test a lower workload, and inspect ventilation before altering drivers or hardware. After each test, either keep the change because it solved the problem or undo it before trying the next one. This preserves a known baseline and prevents several unrelated changes from hiding the cause.

Use the game’s official support page for title-specific launchers, anti-cheat components, mods, error codes, and known update problems. The procedure here is general Windows guidance; Linux or Proton, macOS, cloud gaming, and launcher-specific installations can require different controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to stop troubleshooting yourself

Move from game-level troubleshooting to professional or manufacturer support when any of these conditions apply:

  • The PC repeatedly blue-screens, displays stop codes, or restarts under more than one demanding application.
  • Temperatures or fan behavior seem abnormal, or the machine shuts down after worsening performance.
  • You are not confident cleaning a laptop or opening a desktop component safely.
  • The game still fails after requirements, file integrity, background software, DirectX compatibility, and recent-change checks, and the error is specific to a title or launcher.
  • You need to change firmware, drivers, or hardware but cannot identify a documented reason and recovery path.

At that point, provide support with the exact error, timing, stop code if present, PC specifications, Windows version, launcher, game version, and the changes you already tested. That record is more useful than a list of untracked tweaks.
