The fastest way to troubleshoot a network incident spread across several monitoring tools is to treat the investigation as a sequence of questions, not a tour of dashboards. First define the affected service, users, network path and time window. Then choose the signal that can answer the next question—metrics for scope, logs for decisions and history, live-flow tools for current traffic, and path tests for reachability. Correlate records with a shared timestamp and traffic identifiers, narrow the fault domain, apply the smallest safe change, and validate both the path and the service outcome.
AWS draws the key distinction this way: “Monitoring tells you that something is wrong. Observability uses data collection to tell you what is wrong and why it happened.” A useful incident process therefore connects a user or business symptom to the infrastructure evidence that can explain it, rather than assuming the loudest alert is the root cause.
What to do first when alerts come from several tools
Open one incident record and establish a single timeline before changing anything. Record the first observed symptom, the alert time, the time zone used by each system, and the latest known-good time. Note whether the failure is continuous or intermittent.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Service: name the API, website, database, queue, cluster service or external dependency that users cannot reach.
- Impact: identify affected users, regions, tenants, availability zones and error rates. Start with an outcome such as call-setup success or page speed, not an infrastructure graph in isolation.
- Path: write the known source, destination, protocol, port, hostname, load balancer, node, subnet, VPC or transit gateway involved.
- Symptom: classify the evidence as timeout, reset, DNS failure, packet drop, authorization denial, high latency, connection-limit rejection or an application error.
- Window: preserve a query window that includes several minutes before the first alert and continues through recovery.
Do not infer that two charts describe the same traffic merely because their lines rise together. A metric may be aggregated by cluster, while a flow log is scoped to an interface and an access log is scoped to a request. The rest of the investigation is about proving which records belong to the same path.

A repeatable six-stage incident loop
1. Detect and scope the symptom
Begin with the alert or user report and state a testable problem: for example, “requests from the checkout service in zone A to the payment endpoint have timed out since 14:07 UTC”. Include protocol and port when known. If the alert reports increased TCP resets, DNS concurrent-limit rejections or packet drops, preserve those exact terms; they point to different next checks.
Separate the observed symptom from a hypothesis. “TCP resets increased” is evidence. “The firewall is broken” is a theory that still needs a record showing a firewall decision. Capture a baseline from an unaffected source, destination or zone when one exists. A comparison can show whether the incident is regional, resource-specific or global without requiring a blind configuration change.
2. Isolate the network tier
Ask whether the failure is inside the workload platform or in the surrounding cloud network. In a GKE environment, cluster-side candidates include the container network interface (CNI), NetworkPolicy and IP masquerading. Outside the cluster, inspect VPC firewall rules, routes and Cloud NAT. Google’s GKE guidance recommends a Google Compute Engine VM baseline test for this diagnosis: test the same destination from a VM outside the affected cluster, then compare the result with a pod-to-destination test.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A successful VM test does not prove that the destination is healthy; it shows that at least one path outside the cluster works. A failed VM test does not identify which VPC component failed. Use the result to choose the next evidence source, then confirm the exact drop point with logs or a connectivity analysis.
3. Choose evidence for the question
Use the tool whose signal matches the question and the time horizon. Metrics tell you how large and how persistent the problem is. Policy and flow logs explain decisions and support historical searches. A live flow stream is best while traffic is failing now. A path simulation tests whether the configured route and policy allow the connection.
| Operational question | Most useful signal | What it can establish | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| How many connections are failing? | GKE Dataplane V2 or service metrics | Trend, rate, scope and timing of drops, resets or errors | Usually does not identify the rule or hop that caused the failure |
| Why was a pod connection blocked? | GKE NetworkPolicy logs | Policy decision and, where recorded, the policy context | Only covers events collected by the policy logging configuration |
| What happened on a VPC path earlier? | VPC Flow Logs in Cloud Logging | Historical traffic, interface or subnet context and accepted or rejected status | Aggregation, sampling, retention and fields depend on the cloud configuration |
| What is happening on a node right now? | Hubble CLI with hubble observe |
Live node and workload flows, including drop reasons when emitted | Requires Hubble visibility and is most useful during an active event |
| Where would a configured path be dropped? | Connectivity Test simulation | Static reachability analysis across routes, VPC firewalls and GKE nodes | A passing simulation does not prove that live packets are arriving |
| Are monitored AWS flows losing packets or adding latency? | Network Flow Monitor | Packet-loss and latency views for monitored flows | It covers the flows selected for monitoring, not every possible path |
| Is internet-facing traffic experiencing a regional event? | Internet Monitor | Health events and performance impact for internet traffic | It is an AWS internet-traffic capability, not a universal application trace |
| Is a hybrid link reachable with acceptable delay? | Network Synthetic Monitor | Probe-based latency and packet loss for configured connections | Probe results can differ from a user’s application path |
The AWS names in the last three rows are AWS-specific services. Other platforms may expose similar questions under different product names; compare the question answered, scope and evidence rather than assuming feature names are interchangeable.
4. Correlate records before assigning cause
Normalize timestamps to one time zone and use the same incident window in every query. Then match fields that persist between sources: source and destination addresses, source and destination ports, protocol, resource or interface identifier, path and action. A dashboard-level timestamp alone is not sufficient because aggregated points can represent different traffic.

AWS’s documented firewall-to-flow-log method uses the timestamp and the five-tuple: source IP, destination IP, source port, destination port and protocol. Network Firewall logs can show whether traffic was allowed, denied or triggered an alert and identify the rule group. VPC Flow Logs add VPC context such as the subnet, instance or network interface. Together they can show which resource initiated the flow, where it travelled and what decision was made.
Keep application and network layers separate while joining them. VPC Lattice access logs describe service-level requests, identities, latency, response codes and authorization decisions. Flow Logs describe network-level IP exchanges and whether security groups accepted or rejected traffic. A successful TCP exchange can still produce an application authorization error; an application timeout can occur because the network never completed the handshake. The two log types are complementary, not substitutes.
5. Narrow the fault domain and test one change
Once a record identifies a likely tier, limit the change to that tier. For a policy denial, verify the intended source identity, destination label, port and rule precedence before changing the policy. For a route or NAT problem, confirm the route table, next hop and address translation requirements. For a DNS limit, inspect resolver demand and concurrent-query behavior rather than opening unrelated firewall ports.
Write down the expected observation before applying the change: for example, “new flows from subnet X to destination Y should move from rejected to accepted, while unrelated traffic remains unchanged.” This makes rollback and validation objective. Avoid making several independent changes at once; otherwise a later improvement cannot be attributed and a hidden regression may remain.
6. Validate recovery in two different ways
Run a simulated Connectivity Test after the configuration change to determine whether the declared path is now allowed and where a failure would occur. Then check live service and network metrics to confirm that real traffic recovered. Google’s GKE guidance specifically pairs a passing connectivity simulation with a dashboard check that the drop rate returned to zero.
These tests answer different questions. A simulation evaluates configured reachability. Metrics and logs show what packets and requests actually did. Keep watching through at least one normal traffic cycle, and verify the original user outcome—not merely that one synthetic probe succeeded—before closing the incident.
How to investigate a GKE incident across cluster and VPC tools
Start with a pod-versus-VM comparison
- Record the affected pod or service, destination hostname or IP, protocol, port and failure interval.
- Run a controlled request from an affected pod or equivalent workload and save the result, including timeout, reset, DNS response or HTTP status.
- Run the same destination test from a Google Compute Engine VM in the relevant VPC, using the same protocol and port where possible.
- If the VM succeeds while the pod fails, prioritize CNI, NetworkPolicy and IP masquerading evidence. If both fail, inspect VPC firewall rules, routes, Cloud NAT and the destination path.
- Repeat from an unaffected node, zone or namespace only when doing so will distinguish scope; record the source identity so the comparison remains valid.
The comparison is a fault-domain test, not a root-cause test. Differences in source address, identity, DNS resolver or egress route can make two apparently similar requests take different paths.

Use live Hubble flows during an active failure
When the problem is happening now, stream current flows with hubble observe. Filter as narrowly as the incident allows by namespace, pod, destination, port or verdict. Look for a repeated drop reason, an unexpected identity, a missing reply or a route that never reaches the intended endpoint. Save a sample of both failed and successful flows with their timestamps.
Recommended Free Tools
A live stream is not a historical database. If the issue is intermittent or has already stopped, switch to NetworkPolicy logs and VPC Flow Logs in Cloud Logging. Query a window that includes the failure and group results by source, destination, verdict and interface so one noisy workload does not hide a smaller but important pattern.
Read GKE evidence by question
- Dataplane V2 metrics: establish whether drops, resets or errors increased and at what scale. Use them to determine whether the incident is confined to one workload, node, zone or cluster.
- NetworkPolicy logs: explain an in-cluster block. Confirm the selected policy, source and destination identities, and the port or protocol evaluated.
- VPC Flow Logs: examine traffic after it leaves the cluster boundary. Use interface, subnet, direction and accepted or rejected status to identify VPC-level behavior and historical timing.
- Hubble: inspect node traffic in real time and capture drop reasons while reproducing the symptom.
- Connectivity Tests: evaluate the declared path across VPC firewalls, routes and GKE nodes after you have a concrete source and destination.
How to correlate alerts, firewall logs and flow logs
Build a correlation key
Create a reusable incident query key containing the normalized event time, five-tuple, resource or interface ID, direction and policy or firewall action. Add a request ID, trace ID or workload identity when the application layer supplies one. Do not force a field that does not exist: if a tool has no stable request identifier, state that the join is probabilistic and use the strongest available network fields.
When clocks differ, compare a bounded interval rather than an exact second. Preserve the original timestamp and the normalized timestamp in notes so another responder can reproduce the query. Record whether a source is sampled, aggregated or delayed; an apparent absence of a flow is not proof that no packet was sent.
Join the records in a useful order
- Application or service symptom: identify the request, user or workload and the observed latency, status or timeout.
- Network flow: match source and destination addresses, ports, protocol, direction and interface or resource.
- Firewall or policy decision: identify the rule group, policy, verdict and reason where available.
- Path context: map the interface, subnet, route, NAT gateway, transit gateway or node involved.
- Recovery evidence: locate the first accepted flow and the corresponding return of service-level success.
This order prevents a common mistake: treating a firewall alert as the incident itself when it may be a harmless scan, or treating a rejected flow as the cause when the application was already failing for another reason.

Centralize multi-account AWS visibility carefully
For broad AWS visibility, deliver logs to a centralized archive and query them centrally. Transit Gateway Flow Logs provide a consolidated view of traffic crossing that gateway, but they do not capture traffic that remains inside a single VPC. Retain VPC-level logs for intra-VPC coverage. When a flow crosses several accounts, preserve the originating account, interface and subnet fields so central queries do not erase ownership or path context.
AWS describes VPC Flow Logs as supporting more than 40 custom log-format fields. The documented fields include source and destination information, ports, protocols, TCP flags, traffic path and direction. The number is a capability described on the AWS Networking Best Practices page, not an industry-wide statistic; available fields still depend on the log format and service configuration you select.

Which monitoring tool should you check first?
Choose the first tool from the symptom and timing, not from whichever dashboard your team uses most often.
| If you need to know… | Check first | Then confirm with |
|---|---|---|
| Whether impact is growing or shrinking | Service and infrastructure metrics | Logs or flows grouped by source, destination and verdict |
| Why traffic is being denied inside a cluster | NetworkPolicy logs or live Hubble verdicts | Policy definition and a Connectivity Test |
| Whether a VPC path rejected traffic earlier | VPC Flow Logs | Firewall logs, route tables and interface context |
| Whether packets are failing right now on a node | Hubble live flows | Dataplane metrics and a reproducible request |
| Whether a configured path should be reachable | Connectivity Test | Live flow and service-success metrics |
| Whether users on the public internet are affected | Internet Monitor and business-outcome metrics | Application access logs and regional or provider comparisons |
| Whether a hybrid connection is adding loss or delay | Network Synthetic Monitor | Endpoint-specific logs and workload traffic from the same path |
When selecting or consolidating tools, compare six practical axes: the operational question answered, near-real-time versus historical timing, scope from host to application, correlation keys, attribution detail, and retention and cost. Also ask what validation step the tool supports after remediation. A dashboard that shows a red line but cannot identify a decision, path or testable recovery condition is an alert surface, not a complete diagnostic capability.

TCP resets
First determine whether resets are emitted by the client, server, load balancer or an intermediary. Correlate the five-tuple and direction with flow records, then inspect the endpoint and firewall decision. A reset count can rise because a service is actively refusing connections, because a middlebox is terminating them, or because a protocol mismatch causes immediate closure; the metric alone cannot distinguish these cases.
DNS concurrent-limit rejections
Confirm the affected resolver, namespace, source workload and interval. Compare successful and rejected queries, then check whether the limit is reached only by one workload or across the environment. Avoid treating every downstream timeout as a firewall issue until DNS completion and the returned address have been verified.
Packet drops with no application error
Use metrics to establish scale, then inspect live flows or historical flow logs for the source, destination and drop reason. If the application has retries, user-visible errors may lag behind packet loss. Correlate retry bursts with the same five-tuple and preserve both dropped and accepted examples.
Intermittent connectivity
Widen the time window and search for patterns by node, zone, interface, route, source port or destination address. A one-time successful Connectivity Test cannot rule out an intermittent route, capacity or policy condition. Use historical logs and synthetic probes to capture recurrence, while live tools may miss the event after it ends.
Only one cluster or namespace is affected
Compare workload identity, NetworkPolicy, CNI state, node placement and egress address with an unaffected workload. A VPC-level test from a VM may pass because it does not reproduce the pod identity or masquerading behavior. Keep the comparison source-specific and avoid broadening policy until the denied identity and port are known.

Alert noise, correlation and incident context
Correlation is useful only when the relationship between events is explicit. AWS recommends starting from a business-outcome metric—such as call-setup success for a mobile calling service or page speed for a website—then linking supporting infrastructure metrics and alarms. Selected alarms can be associated with an application and a runbook so responders know which evidence and action belong together.
Event suppression should follow administrator-defined policy and related evidence. Palo Alto Networks documents a Prisma SD-WAN event engine that can correlate, suppress and escalate events according to network conditions; its example groups related VPN-down events into a Secure Fabric Link incident and suppresses the original list. This is a product-specific example, not evidence that unrelated monitoring products will correlate automatically. In any platform, retain the underlying events and the rule that grouped them so suppression does not hide a distinct failure.
Azure flow-log lifecycle caveat
Microsoft’s current Azure Network Watcher documentation says NSG Flow Logs retire on September 30, 2027, that creating new NSG Flow Logs is no longer supported, and that users should migrate to virtual network flow logs. The same documentation states that collection occurs at one-minute intervals. Because lifecycle status, fields, retention and pricing can change, check the live Microsoft migration guidance before writing or applying an implementation procedure.
Do not transfer field names or retention assumptions between AWS, Google Cloud and Azure. Each provider exposes different scopes, aggregation behavior, permissions and pricing. Record the provider, region, edition and configuration in the runbook so a future responder can tell whether a missing record means “no traffic” or “no collection.”
A practical incident runbook template
Use the following fields in the incident ticket or on-call document. Keep the values specific enough that another responder can rerun each query.
- Impact statement: service, user population, region and first known failure time.
- Traffic definition: source and destination, protocol, ports, hostname, direction and resource or interface IDs.
- Symptom samples: one failed request, one successful request if available, and the exact error, reset, timeout or drop reason.
- Scope test: affected versus unaffected workload, node, zone or VM result.
- Evidence queries: metric name and interval; live-flow filter; policy or firewall-log query; flow-log query and retention caveat.
- Hypothesis: the fault domain and the evidence that would falsify it.
- Change: exact rule, route, NAT, policy or deployment modification, owner and rollback action.
- Validation: Connectivity Test result, accepted or rejected flow after the change, drop-rate metric and business-outcome metric.
- Closure: recovery time, remaining risk, follow-up telemetry or runbook change and links to retained logs.
How to improve the toolset before the next incident
Standardize timestamps, resource names and ownership labels across monitoring systems. Ensure each important flow record can be associated with a source workload or interface, a destination and a policy or firewall decision. Retain enough history to investigate intermittent events, but set retention and sampling deliberately because storage and query cost vary by provider.
Create dashboards that place business impact beside infrastructure evidence, and attach a runbook to the alarms that can trigger an incident. Include at least one live-flow method, one historical-log method and one path-validation method for each critical service. Test those methods during a controlled exercise; a tool that is technically enabled but lacks permissions, labels or retention is not usable during an outage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFinally, document vendor-specific caveats. AWS Network Flow Monitor, Internet Monitor and Network Synthetic Monitor answer different questions. GKE Hubble, NetworkPolicy logs, VPC Flow Logs and Connectivity Tests cover different layers. Azure’s NSG Flow Logs lifecycle requires migration planning. Treat those differences as part of the operating design, not as details to discover while users are waiting.
