When Claude spans are missing or appear twice, first identify the telemetry layer: the Claude SDK emits client spans inside your application, while Claude API tracing delivers server spans from the Claude platform. Then verify provider-registration order, tracing flags, destination health, context propagation, exporter behavior, and duplicate instrumentation. Compare service.name, span kind, instrumentation scope, trace ID, and span ID before changing code; those fields usually reveal whether data is missing, delivered twice, or legitimately represented by two layers.
Start by defining which span should exist
Anthropic supports three useful views of a Claude request: an SDK client span, an API server span, and the application span that surrounds the call. SDK tracing runs in your process. API tracing is produced by the Claude platform and sent to destinations configured in the Claude Console. Enabling both is valid, but one request can then produce two spans with similar or identical names. A troubleshooting session goes wrong when a team expects one record without first deciding which of these records it wants.
SDK spans
An SDK span is created by the language client in your application. The SDK uses the tracer provider registered by your application, so provider configuration and registration timing are under your control. SDK request spans use span kind CLIENT. Their instrumentation scope identifies the SDK, with names such as com.anthropic.sdk.<language>. A typical request span is named after the API method, for example anthropic.messages.create.
API spans
An API span is created by Claude’s service and delivered to the destination configured for the relevant workspace. These spans identify the producing service with service.name=claude-platform, use span kind SERVER, and use the API instrumentation scope com.anthropic.claude-platform. They do not depend on whether your local process successfully exported its SDK span.

Parent and tool spans
Your web request, job, agent run, or workflow span is the parent you normally want around a Claude call. Tool execution may add another child span. If a Claude span is a root or belongs to an unrelated trace, the usual problem is context propagation rather than Claude request execution.
| Record | Where it is produced | Identity to check | Expected kind |
|---|---|---|---|
| SDK request span | Your application process | SDK scope such as com.anthropic.sdk.<language> |
CLIENT |
| API request span | Claude platform | service.name=claude-platform and com.anthropic.claude-platform |
SERVER |
| Application parent | Your application or job runner | Your configured service name and parent span ID | Depends on the operation |
| Tool span | Your tool runner or agent framework | The tool instrumentation scope and inherited trace ID | Depends on the tool operation |
Use this seven-step diagnostic sequence
1. Write down the expected record
Capture the exact symptom before editing configuration. State whether you expect an SDK client span, an API server span, a tool span, or a parent application span. Record whether SDK tracing, API tracing, or both are enabled. Also note the request time, workspace, model operation, and the backend query used to look for it. This prevents a healthy API span from being mistaken for a missing SDK span.
2. Prove local SDK emission with a console exporter
Register a tracer provider before the first Claude call that should be traced; doing so before constructing the client is the safest ordering. Temporarily add a console exporter and make one controlled request. Look specifically for anthropic.messages.create, then inspect its trace ID, span ID, kind, and instrumentation scope. The console exporter separates local instrumentation failures from collector, network, or backend failures.
If no SDK span is printed, check that the Anthropic SDK and its OpenTelemetry integration are installed at compatible versions, that your provider registration code actually runs in the process making the request, and that ANTHROPIC_OPEN_TELEMETRY is not set to false. A provider registered after the first request cannot retroactively create that request’s span.
3. Prove API delivery in the Claude Console
For API tracing, open the Claude Console and inspect the destination configured for the workspace that made the request. Confirm that the destination covers that workspace and reports Healthy. If the Console reports an error, save the error and delivery timestamp before changing application code. Send one controlled request, then query the receiving backend for service.name=claude-platform.
Searching only for your application’s service name will miss API spans, because those spans are produced by Claude’s platform. Conversely, searching only for claude-platform will not prove that the SDK emitted a local client span.

4. Classify apparent duplicates by identity
Open both records and compare trace ID, span ID, service name, span kind, instrumentation scope, operation name, and timestamps. Do not deduplicate by name alone. The same operation name can be used by a local SDK span and a platform API span for one request.
| Observed pattern | Most likely explanation | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Same trace ID and same span ID, received more than once | Repeated delivery or backend replay | Deduplicate on the pair of trace ID and span ID, unless your backend already does so. |
Different IDs, one CLIENT SDK span and one SERVER API span |
SDK and API tracing are both enabled | Keep both when you need client and platform views; otherwise disable one path deliberately. |
| Different IDs from the same SDK scope | Duplicate SDK instrumentation, a second provider, or an application retry | Find every instrumentation hook and retry boundary, then retain one SDK instrumentation path. |
| Different IDs from the API scope for one request | Repeated API delivery or a service-side retry | Check destination delivery logs and apply trace ID plus span ID deduplication. |
| One record nested under the application trace and one root record | Context propagation failure in one path | Repair W3C propagation and ensure the call executes inside the intended parent span. |
5. Repair parent context propagation
Start the Claude call while the intended parent span is active. Register a W3C trace-context propagator so the SDK can write a traceparent header. After one controlled request, verify that the Claude span has the parent span ID you expect and that the trace ID matches the surrounding operation.
For Go tools, create tool spans from the context supplied by the tool runner. Do not create a fresh root context inside the tool implementation. A new root context severs the relationship even though the tool and Claude call may execute successfully.
6. Check exporter and destination behavior
Confirm that your collector or exporter accepts the payload, supports the encoding you send, and returns promptly. Anthropic documents retries after timeout, connection, TLS, DNS, HTTP 408, HTTP 429, and HTTP 5xx responses. A destination can therefore receive the same span more than once. Inspect collector logs, destination response codes, retry counters, and queue saturation at the request time.
Export is best effort. A span that is absent from the backend is not proof that the Claude request did not occur. For complete API-key usage accounting, use the Usage API rather than exported spans.

Pin the Claude SDK, its OpenTelemetry integration, the OpenTelemetry SDK, and collector components while you capture examples. Anthropic describes the Claude OpenTelemetry export and schema as beta; upgrades can rename spans, attributes, options, or environment variables. Record the instrumentation scope and dependency versions with each captured span, and treat an upgrade as a dashboard and query migration rather than a routine patch.

Fix missing SDK spans
Verify registration order
The tracer provider must be registered before the first Claude SDK call that you expect to observe. Initialization hidden behind a lazy module, a web-server startup hook that runs too late, or a worker that creates its client before global telemetry setup can all produce a clean request with no SDK span. Put provider setup in the earliest deterministic startup path, then create the client and issue the test request.
Check the tracing flag
Inspect the process environment and deployment manifest for ANTHROPIC_OPEN_TELEMETRY. The value false disables the SDK’s OpenTelemetry behavior. Check the effective environment inside the running worker or container, not only the shell where you launched a local test; process managers and orchestrators often supply a different value.
Validate the integration and exporter independently
Use the console exporter first. If the console shows anthropic.messages.create but your collector does not, the SDK is emitting and the fault is downstream. If neither console nor backend shows a span, focus on SDK version, provider registration, initialization order, and the tracing flag. Once local emission is proven, restore the normal exporter and compare one request at a time.

Search the application for automatic Anthropic instrumentation, manual wrapper code, framework middleware, and any vendor-neutral instrumentation package that might create a second SDK span. Two wrappers around the same client can create separate spans or cause confusing parentage. Choose one instrumentation path and remove or disable the other while keeping the tracer provider shared.
Fix missing API spans
Confirm workspace and destination scope
API tracing is configured at the Claude platform and delivered to destinations. Verify that the request’s workspace is included in the destination configuration. A destination that is healthy for one workspace does not establish coverage for another. Use a request made deliberately from the target workspace, then search for service.name=claude-platform.
Read the Console delivery status
The Claude Console exposes destination health and reports delivery errors. Treat that status as the first branch in the investigation. A failing destination points to delivery configuration, authentication, network reachability, or receiver behavior; changing SDK initialization will not repair a platform-to-destination failure.

Separate delivery loss from request absence
Because export is best effort, an absent API span cannot establish that the API call never happened. Check the Usage API for complete API-key usage accounting, then correlate the request time and workspace with destination logs. This separates a real request with lost telemetry from a request that was never sent.

Legitimate SDK/API overlap
When both tracing modes are enabled, one SDK client span and one API server span can represent the same request. They may share an operation name such as anthropic.messages.create but differ in service name, span kind, scope, and often trace relationship. This is not automatically an error. Keep both when you need latency from the caller and confirmation from the platform; disable one mode only when your dashboards require a single representation.
At-least-once delivery
API span delivery is at least once. Retries or repeated delivery can produce identical records in the receiver. Use the immutable combination of trace ID and span ID as the deduplication key. If your backend already enforces that identity, do not add a second rule that might discard distinct spans.
Duplicate SDK instrumentation
Different IDs from the same SDK scope usually indicate that more than one code path instruments the client, or that the application retries the operation and creates a new span. Enumerate manual wrappers, auto-instrumentation packages, framework hooks, and retry middleware. A genuine retry should have a separate operation event or attempt marker in your application model; duplicate wrappers should be removed so one request has one client span.
Backend replay versus application retry
Compare timestamps and IDs before labeling a duplicate. The same IDs arriving at different times point to exporter or destination replay. New IDs with new request attempts point to application behavior or a service retry. Keep transport and application logs beside the span records so the classification is based on evidence rather than span name.
Reconnect Claude spans to the parent trace
Use an active parent span
Create or enter the application span before invoking the Claude client, and keep that context active through the call. In asynchronous code, explicitly pass the context across task, thread, queue, and callback boundaries; an implicit thread-local context can disappear when execution moves to a worker.

Register W3C propagation
Use the OpenTelemetry W3C trace-context propagator. The SDK then writes a traceparent header that carries the current trace ID and parent span relationship. Verify propagation by checking the resulting Claude span’s parent span ID and by confirming that the trace ID is the same as the application span’s trace ID.
Preserve tool-runner context
Tool implementations should accept the context supplied by the runner and use it when creating child spans and making downstream calls. Creating a new context in each tool makes the tool look like a separate trace and can leave a Claude call detached even when the outer agent trace is correct.
Interpret an API span’s relationship carefully
The platform API span is a server-side record. Its relationship to your SDK span depends on propagation and the platform’s trace-linking behavior; do not assume that matching operation names prove parentage. Use trace ID, parent span ID, and scope fields from the actual records to determine whether the spans are nested, linked, or independent.

Make exporter troubleshooting observable
Inspect the complete path
- SDK or platform creates the span.
- Exporter serializes and queues it.
- Collector or destination receives the payload.
- Receiver acknowledges or rejects it.
- Backend indexes it and your query returns it.
Instrument each boundary with counters, response codes, queue depth, and timestamps. A span visible in a console exporter but absent in the backend narrows the fault to one of the last four stages.
Account for retries
Receivers should tolerate retries after timeout, connection, TLS, DNS, 408, 429, and 5xx responses. Return a prompt, accurate response and make ingestion idempotent on trace ID plus span ID. Otherwise a temporary receiver failure can become a permanent duplicate-record problem after the sender retries.
Check compression and payload handling
Confirm that the collector and destination accept the compression format used by the exporter, including gzip when configured. A receiver that closes a connection after reading headers, rejects compressed content, or times out while processing a payload can trigger a retry that looks like duplicate instrumentation.
Build a repeatable investigation record
For every incident, save one controlled request and the records associated with it. A useful capture contains the request timestamp, workspace, SDK and OpenTelemetry versions, effective tracing environment, provider-registration point, exporter configuration, destination health, backend query, trace ID, span ID, service name, span kind, instrumentation scope, parent span ID, and any retry or receiver response.

| Was a local span emitted? | Console-exporter output and SDK scope | Continue downstream only if emission is proven. |
| Was platform delivery configured? | Workspace, destination coverage, Console health | Repair destination before changing application code. |
| Is the record duplicated? | Trace ID, span ID, scope, kind, service name, timestamps | Classify replay, SDK/API overlap, or duplicate instrumentation. |
| Is context intact? | Parent span ID and trace ID across application, SDK, and tool spans | Repair active context or W3C propagation. |
| Could a version change explain it? | Pinned dependency versions and schema fields | Hold versions and update queries deliberately. |
Operational checklist
- Define whether the expected record is SDK, API, tool, or parent.
- Confirm which tracing modes are enabled.
- Register the tracer provider before the first traced Claude call.
- Use a temporary console exporter to prove local SDK emission.
- Check that
ANTHROPIC_OPEN_TELEMETRYis notfalse. - Verify destination workspace coverage and Healthy status in the Claude Console.
- Search API records with
service.name=claude-platform. - Compare trace ID, span ID, service name, span kind, scope, and parent span ID.
- Deduplicate repeated delivery by trace ID plus span ID.
- Remove competing SDK instrumentation paths.
- Keep Claude calls inside the intended parent span and register W3C propagation.
- Pass the tool-runner context into Go tool spans.
- Inspect collector responses, compression, timeouts, and retry conditions.
- Use the Usage API when exported spans cannot provide complete usage accounting.
- Pin SDK and OpenTelemetry versions while diagnosing the beta schema.
What a correct result looks like
A healthy SDK-only setup shows one CLIENT span in the application trace, with an SDK instrumentation scope and a parent span supplied by your application. A healthy API-only setup shows a SERVER span with service.name=claude-platform after the configured destination accepts delivery. A setup with both modes intentionally enabled shows two records that can be distinguished by scope, service name, and span kind rather than by name alone. In all three cases, repeated delivery of the same span ID is collapsed by the backend, and tool spans retain the trace context passed by the runner.
The practical rule is to diagnose identity before volume: first determine which producer should have created the span, then determine whether that producer emitted it, whether delivery succeeded, and whether the backend stored it once. That order prevents exporter loss from being mistaken for missing instrumentation and prevents legitimate SDK/API coverage from being deleted as a duplicate.
