If a Sony TV, soundbar, or receiver reports “Dolby Audio” instead of Dolby Atmos—or produces only stereo—the missing format is usually being lost somewhere between the title, playback device, HDMI connection, TV settings, and speaker configuration. Atmos is delivered only when the selected content, source device, connection route, and audio system all support the same format. Use the sequence below to identify the exact point where it disappears before buying equipment.

What must be true for Dolby Atmos to work

A Dolby Atmos logo on a television, soundbar, or receiver does not mean every app, title, input, or cable route will deliver Atmos. The selected content must contain Atmos, the playback device must output it, the connection must carry it, and the Sony audio system must decode it. If any one of those conditions fails, the system may fall back to Dolby Digital, Dolby Audio, multichannel PCM, or stereo.

  • Content: The specific movie, episode, game, disc, or file must include an Atmos or other multichannel soundtrack.
  • Playback device: The streaming box, game console, Blu-ray player, television app, or other source must be able to output that soundtrack.
  • Connection: The HDMI route must support the required codec and bandwidth. TV audio return uses ARC or eARC; a source can sometimes connect directly to an audio system instead.
  • Audio system: The soundbar or receiver must support the incoming format and be configured for the speakers actually installed.
  • Settings: The TV must send sound to the audio system, and pass-through, digital-output, and eARC options must be set appropriately.

Sony says supported formats differ by audio device and model. Treat the model manual and specifications as authoritative rather than assuming that two products with an Atmos badge support identical inputs or codecs.

Record the exact signal path before changing settings

Write down the complete setup. This prevents troubleshooting the wrong device or assuming that an app, disc, and external player use the same route.

  1. Note the exact model number of the Sony TV, soundbar, or A/V receiver.
  2. Identify the source: built-in TV app, streaming box, game console, Blu-ray player, USB file, broadcast, or another device.
  3. Record the app and title, or the disc and audio-track selection.
  4. Trace every HDMI cable: source to TV, source to soundbar/receiver, and TV eARC/ARC to audio-system eARC/ARC.
  5. Write down what the audio system displays while the title plays, such as Dolby Atmos, Dolby Audio, Dolby Digital, PCM, or a channel count.

Use one known-compatible title and replay it after every change. A format indication on the receiver or soundbar is more useful than the title’s marketing description because it shows what the audio system actually received.

Choose the correct HDMI route

There are two practical arrangements: return audio from the TV to the audio system, or connect the playback source directly to an HDMI input on the soundbar or receiver.

Route When it is appropriate Requirements and limits
TV HDMI eARC/ARC to audio-system HDMI OUT eARC/ARC Built-in TV apps and external sources whose audio is passed through the television Both devices must support the required return feature. eARC supports higher-bandwidth formats; an ARC-only soundbar remains limited to ARC specifications even when the TV has eARC.
Source HDMI OUT to soundbar/receiver HDMI IN, then video to TV The TV cannot pass the desired format, or the audio system provides a suitable HDMI input The source, audio-system input, and audio system’s video pass-through must support the chosen audio and video formats.
Source through TV, then TV eARC to audio system The TV accepts the source and can pass its soundtrack through eARC Check the TV’s model-specific codec support and pass-through settings. A television may accept a source without passing every format to the audio system.

Sony’s connection guidance supports both TV-to-audio eARC and direct source-to-soundbar or receiver HDMI in suitable systems. The best route depends on the ports, codecs, and video pass-through supported by your exact models.

Step 1: Verify that the source really contains the expected format

Check the title and audio-track selection

Confirm that the title is advertised as Dolby Atmos or the relevant multichannel format and that the Atmos track is selected. Services can provide different tracks by plan, device, region, language, or playback mode. Do not use a random title as a test; use one whose source documentation identifies Atmos support for your playback device.

Check the source device’s output mode

Open the source device’s audio settings and look for options such as bitstream, passthrough, or direct output. The exact labels vary, so follow that device’s manual. Verify that the HDMI output is connected to the port you think it is and that the selected input is the one carrying the test signal.

Account for Sony player and file limitations

Sony states that its Blu-ray Disc players do not support network streaming services in Dolby Atmos. An Atmos-capable player therefore does not guarantee Atmos from every streaming service; the service may need to run on a supported app or device instead.

Sony also says BRAVIA televisions do not support Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio from USB files, video streaming services, or broadcasts. That statement applies to those codecs and routes; it does not establish that every form of Atmos streaming is unsupported. Check the exact source and codec rather than generalizing from one failed file.

Step 2: Inspect HDMI ports, cable ratings, and eARC capability

Use the labeled ports

Connect the TV’s port labeled HDMI eARC/ARC to the audio system’s HDMI OUT port labeled eARC/ARC. A cable plugged into an ordinary TV HDMI input will not provide the TV’s audio-return function. If you use the direct-source route, connect the player to an HDMI input on the soundbar or receiver, not to an unrelated port.

Confirm eARC on both endpoints

eARC is an improved version of ARC carried over HDMI. Sony’s eARC support material describes bandwidth of up to 37 Mbps and identifies eARC as the path for formats such as Dolby Atmos with Dolby TrueHD and uncompressed multichannel audio. Both connected devices must support eARC to use eARC capabilities. If the soundbar supports ARC only, its output remains limited to ARC specifications.

Replace an uncertain cable with the appropriate rating

Sony recommends a High-Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet for eARC data transfer. In a BRAVIA guide for a high-quality external-source setup, Sony recommends a Premium High-Speed cable rated for 18 Gbps or an Ultra High-Speed cable rated for 48 Gbps. Use the rating that matches the topology and model requirements, and keep the cable as short and soundly connected as practical.

A higher-rated cable cannot create eARC in an ARC-only soundbar, add an unsupported codec, or correct a disabled pass-through setting. Cable replacement is useful when the current cable is unmarked, damaged, unusually long, or known not to meet the required rating.

Step 3: Set the BRAVIA television to send audio to the system

Select Audio System as the TV speaker output

On the BRAVIA, open the sound or speaker-output menu and select Audio System rather than TV speakers. Menu names and locations vary by television generation and software; use the TV’s Help Guide if the wording differs.

Enable the appropriate eARC mode

In the audio-output menu, locate the eARC setting and choose the model’s automatic or enabled option when both devices support eARC. Sony’s eARC troubleshooting guidance uses eARC Auto. If the TV does not support eARC, Sony advises turning eARC off on the soundbar or receiver; follow the exact product instructions because the switch may be in a different menu.

Review pass-through and digital-audio output

Check settings named Pass through mode, Digital audio out, or similar. Choose the mode that sends the source bitstream to the audio system when the system is intended to decode it. Some televisions offer automatic, PCM, or compressed choices; selecting PCM or another conversion mode can change what the receiver reports. Use the model-specific Help Guide to determine which option preserves the source format.

Power-cycle after changing HDMI control settings

After changing eARC, pass-through, or HDMI-control settings, turn off the TV and audio system, unplug them briefly, reconnect the HDMI cable firmly, and power the audio system on before the TV. Then replay the same test title. This re-establishes the HDMI handshake without changing several variables at once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 4: Configure the soundbar or receiver

Check the audio system’s input and decoder display

Select the HDMI input carrying the source and watch the front panel or control application while the test title plays. If it reports Dolby Atmos, the source and link are delivering Atmos even if the TV’s information screen uses a less specific label. If it reports stereo or PCM, continue upstream through the source and TV settings.

Set a Sony receiver’s speaker pattern to the installed layout

For a multichannel Sony A/V receiver, enter the speaker-pattern or speaker-configuration menu and select the layout that matches the physical speakers. Sony’s Atmos examples include a 5.1.2 pattern with top-middle speakers or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers. That is an example, not a requirement that every room use 5.1.2.

After selecting the correct pattern, use the receiver’s decoding mode intended for incoming formats. Sony’s example uses A.F.D. (Auto Format Decoding). Follow the receiver’s own manual for model-specific names, distance and level calibration, and whether height channels are assigned as top speakers or Atmos-enabled modules.

Do not confuse an upmix mode with native Atmos

A surround or cinema upmixer can distribute stereo or ordinary multichannel audio around the room, but it does not prove that the source contained native Dolby Atmos. For diagnosis, first use the receiver’s automatic format display with a known Atmos source; evaluate optional sound modes only after the incoming format is confirmed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 5: Test eARC with a format that requires it

Sony suggests verifying eARC by playing a file that uses a format available only through eARC, such as Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio, and checking the audio system display. This test confirms the eARC link for that file and route; it does not prove that a streaming title or a different source carries Atmos.

  1. Use a compatible local source and file whose audio format is identified as Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio.
  2. Route it through the TV and the TV’s eARC port to the audio system.
  3. Confirm that eARC is enabled and that the receiver or soundbar is on the correct input.
  4. Check the audio system’s reported format while the file plays.
  5. If the format is received, the eARC link is functioning for that test. If it is not, investigate the TV setting, cable, ports, and device compatibility before changing the streaming app.

Because BRAVIA televisions do not support those codecs from USB files, video streaming services, or broadcasts, use a source and route that the relevant model supports. A failed test with an unsupported BRAVIA source cannot diagnose the HDMI link.

Step 6: Isolate the failed link one change at a time

Change only one point in the chain, then replay the same title. Use this order:

  1. Source output: Confirm the source is set to bitstream, passthrough, or its equivalent and that the title has the expected track.
  2. Source-to-TV or source-to-audio connection: Reseat both ends and verify the selected HDMI input. If possible, test the source directly into the soundbar or receiver.
  3. TV output: Set speakers to Audio System and review digital-output and pass-through options.
  4. eARC status: Confirm that the TV and audio system both support eARC and that it is enabled where appropriate.
  5. Receiver configuration: Match the speaker pattern to the installed speakers and use the model’s automatic format-decoding mode.
  6. Software: Install current TV and audio-system firmware if ordinary audio is also failing or if the manufacturer identifies a relevant compatibility fix.

If direct source-to-soundbar HDMI produces Atmos but TV-to-soundbar eARC does not, the source and audio system are likely compatible and the problem is in the TV’s pass-through capability, eARC settings, port, or cable. If neither route produces Atmos, verify the source title, source output, and audio-system codec support before replacing hardware.

Symptoms and the most likely location of the problem

What you see or hear What to check first Why
Soundbar says Dolby Audio rather than Atmos Title’s soundtrack, source output mode, TV pass-through, and the audio system’s format support The title may not contain Atmos, or a device may be converting it before decoding.
Only stereo or PCM appears TV speaker output, digital-output mode, source audio settings, and HDMI input selection A PCM or stereo setting can replace the source bitstream.
No sound after enabling eARC Correct eARC/ARC ports, Audio System selection, eARC compatibility, cable seating, and power-cycle The HDMI handshake or return path may not be established.
Atmos works from a direct source connection but not from a TV app TV app support, TV pass-through/eARC settings, and the TV model’s supported formats The direct route bypasses the television’s source and codec limitations.
Atmos works from one source but not another The second source’s app, title, output mode, and codec support Format support is route- and source-specific.
Height speakers produce no obvious effect Receiver speaker pattern, assigned height channels, selected soundtrack, and decoding mode Incorrect layout or a non-Atmos soundtrack can leave height channels unused.

When replacing equipment is justified

Replace or add equipment only after the route has been identified. An eARC-capable TV cannot overcome an ARC-only soundbar’s ARC limit. A new HDMI cable cannot add codec support to a source or audio system. Conversely, a cable replacement is reasonable when the existing cable lacks the recommended High-Speed-with-Ethernet rating, is damaged, or cannot reliably maintain the HDMI connection.

Consider a direct source-to-soundbar or receiver connection when the TV lacks eARC or cannot pass the source codec, provided the audio system has an HDMI input and supports the source’s video formats. Before buying, compare the source codec, audio-system input support, video pass-through capability, eARC/ARC support on both endpoints, and the cable rating required by the chosen route.

Final diagnostic checklist

  • The exact title or file contains the format being tested.
  • The source device and app support that format.
  • The source output is set to bitstream, passthrough, or the manufacturer’s equivalent.
  • The TV eARC/ARC port is connected to the audio system’s eARC/ARC output.
  • Both endpoints support the required eARC or ARC feature.
  • The HDMI cable meets Sony’s stated recommendation: High-Speed with Ethernet for eARC, or the relevant 18 Gbps Premium High-Speed or 48 Gbps Ultra High-Speed rating in the described BRAVIA topology.
  • BRAVIA speakers are set to Audio System.
  • eARC, pass-through, and digital-audio-output settings match the model’s Help Guide.
  • The receiver’s speaker pattern matches the installed speakers.
  • The receiver or soundbar reports the incoming format during the same known-compatible test title.
  • TV and audio-system software are current when ordinary audio also fails or a compatibility issue is suspected.

Sony’s menus, firmware behavior, and supported codecs vary by model and region. If the checklist does not resolve the issue, use the exact TV, soundbar or receiver, source, title, firmware, cable route, and model manuals when contacting support; those details determine which formats the system can actually carry.
