Low FPS on a Ryzen AI Max laptop is easiest to fix when you first prove that the slowdown is real. Repeat the same game scene with identical resolution, preset, ray tracing, upscaling, frame-generation, power mode, AC or battery state, and driver version. Then check, in order, the laptop’s power policy, OEM graphics driver, shared-memory allocation, sustained cooling, and supported firmware or Windows updates. Ryzen AI Max laptops are complete OEM systems, so menu names, wattage limits, BIOS options and driver behavior vary by model.
Start by making “low performance” measurable
A frame-rate number without its test conditions cannot establish a fault. A game may run very differently at 2560 × 1600 High with ray tracing than at 1920 × 1080 Medium with upscaling, and a battery run is not comparable with a plugged-in performance-mode run.
Record one repeatable test
Before changing settings, write down:
- The exact laptop model, Ryzen AI Max SKU and Radeon graphics name.
- The game title, game version and the repeatable scene or built-in benchmark.
- Display resolution, graphics preset, ray-tracing options, upscaling mode and frame-generation setting.
- Whether the test uses the laptop display or an external monitor, and the monitor refresh rate.
- The selected OEM power profile and whether the supplied or OEM-approved AC adapter is connected.
- Windows version, BIOS version, chipset-driver version and Radeon graphics-driver version.
- Average FPS and, when available, one-percent-low FPS from the same run. Record frame-time spikes or stutter separately from average FPS.
Run the scene at least twice without changing anything. If the results vary widely, investigate background activity or thermal buildup before comparing drivers or BIOS versions. AMD’s own published comparison identifies wattage, laptop model, Radeon graphics, memory, storage, VBS, Windows version, resolution and game settings; its results are test context, not a universal target for every Ryzen AI Max system.

Ryzen AI Max processors use integrated Radeon graphics and a unified memory pool, but the laptop maker determines the cooling design, firmware limits, memory capacity, display and control software. Two machines with the same processor name can therefore sustain different power levels or clocks.

For example, ASUS lists the 2025 ROG Flow Z13 (GZ302) with an AMD Ryzen AI MAX+ 395, Radeon 8060S graphics, a 13.4-inch 2560 × 1600 180 Hz display and 128 GB of onboard LPDDR5X-8000 memory for the cited configuration. Those figures describe that SKU, not every Ryzen AI Max laptop. See the ASUS specifications page for the configuration details.
Do not compare your result with a review or manufacturer chart unless the Ryzen AI Max SKU, graphics configuration, memory, power mode, operating system and game settings match. A nominal processor model does not guarantee the same sustained wattage or FPS.
Check power mode and background load first
Repeat the test on AC power
Connect the supplied or OEM-approved adapter, select the laptop maker’s performance-oriented profile, and repeat the identical scene. OEM utilities may call these modes Performance, Turbo, Best performance or something else. Windows power mode and the manufacturer’s utility can both influence behavior, so record both when the controls are exposed.

It can indicate a deliberate battery power policy. Report the condition as “battery-limited” or “AC performance restored” and continue testing on the power state you actually intend to use.
Remove unusual background work
Pause or finish unusually heavy downloads, game updates, cloud synchronization, video recording, rendering, virtual machines and browser workloads. Check Task Manager for a process consuming substantial CPU, GPU, disk or network resources. Close only applications you recognize; do not terminate system processes at random.
After the workload is quiet, rerun the same benchmark. If FPS returns, the issue is workload contention rather than a graphics setting that needs permanent adjustment. If it remains low, keep the clean-run result as your baseline for the next checks.

Install the graphics driver intended for your exact laptop
Prefer the OEM package
Open the laptop manufacturer’s support page, select the exact model and Windows edition, and install its validated Radeon graphics and chipset packages. AMD states: “AMD recommends OEM-provided drivers which are customized and validated for their system-specific features and optimizations.” OEM packages can include power, display switching and firmware integration that a generic package does not know about.
If the slowdown began immediately after installing a generic AMD.com package, compare the result with the current OEM graphics driver or use the manufacturer’s supported rollback procedure. Keep the original driver version recorded so support can reproduce the change.
Interpret AMD’s public driver listing correctly
When checked on 2026-10-13, AMD’s Ryzen AI Max+ 395 support page listed Adrenalin 26.9.2 WHQL Optional, released 2026-09-29. Driver status and version numbers change, so verify the live listing before installing. An “Optional” package is not automatically the right choice for a laptop; the OEM package remains the first comparison whenever one is available. If the OEM driver fixes power behavior, display switching or crashes, keep it even if a newer generic package exists.
After a driver change, reboot, allow Windows to settle, then run the same scene with unchanged game settings. Do not change the driver, BIOS and game patch simultaneously or you will not know which change affected performance.
Should you change the VRAM allocation?
Ryzen AI Max graphics share system memory. The amount presented as graphics memory can be adjustable, but the control and its effect are model-specific. ASUS describes memory reallocation on the Flow Z13 between system RAM and VRAM, and requires a reboot after changing it.
When an allocation test is reasonable
Consider a supported allocation change only when the game reports insufficient graphics memory, textures are missing or visibly degraded, or monitoring shows a clear memory-allocation constraint. Before changing it, record the current setting and total installed RAM. Select one higher supported value, reboot, and repeat the exact baseline scene. If there is no measurable improvement or system memory pressure increases, restore the previous value.

Why more VRAM is not a universal FPS fix
AMD’s UMA guidance says, “The UMA frame buffer size is usually set to Auto in the BIOS by default and does not need adjusting.” Increasing the reserved frame buffer may help particular texture or graphics-memory symptoms, but it does not guarantee higher FPS in every game. A larger reservation can also leave less flexible memory for the operating system and applications. Leave Auto in place when the game has no memory-related symptom and performance is otherwise stable.
Check for sustained heat and airflow limits
Separate a cold-start result from a heat-soaked result
Run the same benchmark once shortly after launch and again after a longer gaming session. If clocks and FPS decline together only after the laptop heats up, capture temperatures, GPU and CPU clocks, package power and fan behavior with the OEM monitoring utility or another tool supported by the manufacturer. The pattern matters more than one temperature reading.
AMD notes that maximum boost varies with cooling, motherboard design, BIOS, chipset driver and operating-system updates. That means a lower sustained clock can be a power or thermal policy rather than a failed component.

Improve the test conditions safely
- Place the laptop on a firm, level surface rather than bedding or a soft lap surface.
- Keep intake and exhaust openings clear of dust, papers and accessories.
- Confirm that the fans are able to spin and that the OEM utility is not forcing a silent profile during the test.
- Repeat the run after the system has cooled, then compare clocks and FPS over time.
ASUS describes the 2025 Flow Z13 as using a vapor chamber, larger intake vents and dual fans. That product-level design information shows why airflow is important, but it cannot diagnose your individual unit. No universal safe-temperature cutoff applies to every Ryzen AI Max laptop, so do not use a single number as the only failure criterion. Avoid opening the chassis or applying undocumented voltage or power modifications as a first-line fix.
Update BIOS, chipset and Windows in a controlled order
Once the original baseline is recorded, check the laptop maker’s BIOS and chipset releases and Microsoft’s Windows Update channel. AMD identifies BIOS, chipset-driver and operating-system updates as factors that can affect boost behavior.
- Record the current BIOS, chipset, graphics-driver and Windows versions.
- Install one supported update through the OEM or Microsoft channel.
- Reboot fully, wait for background maintenance to finish and confirm the power profile.
- Run the same game scene and save the result.
- Only then apply the next update, if one is still relevant.
Changing several firmware and driver components at once can make a result impossible to attribute. Avoid third-party tuning utilities until the exact model’s supported controls are understood; an undocumented wattage or voltage change can obscure the original diagnosis and complicate OEM support.

Use the symptom pattern to choose the next check
Low FPS only on battery
Retest on the OEM adapter and performance profile. A sharp recovery on AC points to a power policy or adapter condition. If AC performance is also low, continue with driver, memory and thermal checks.

Low FPS immediately after a driver update
Compare the exact OEM package with the newly installed generic or newer package. If the OEM version restores the baseline, keep it and report the generic version as the trigger.
Textures missing, blurry or accompanied by a low-memory warning
Record the UMA or VRAM setting, test one supported allocation change, reboot and repeat the scene. If the symptom remains, restore the prior setting and provide the game’s message to support; do not assume additional reserved VRAM will raise average FPS.
Performance falls during a long session
Compare clocks, power and temperatures from the beginning and end of the run. Clear airflow, verify the fan profile and contact the OEM if the decline persists with unobstructed vents and current supported software.
Every game is slow, including a repeatable benchmark
Check AC power, the OEM performance profile, graphics and chipset drivers, BIOS and Windows versions, then inspect clocks and package power. A system-wide result is more consistent with a platform-level power, driver, firmware or thermal issue than with one game’s settings.

Keep the laptop configuration fixed and compare that title’s patch, graphics API, shader-compilation status and per-game settings. Do not lower global power or memory settings until another game or benchmark reproduces the problem.

Use published figures as context, not as an FPS promise
AMD published a comparison using a Ryzen AI Max+ 395 system configured at 55 W with an ASUS ROG Flow Z13, Radeon 8060S graphics, 32 GB RAM, a 1 TB SSD, VBS enabled and Windows 11. The methodology used selected 1080p High-settings gaming tests. Laptop manufacturers can vary configurations, and those selected titles are not directly comparable with every game, resolution or OEM power mode.
The 55 W figure is the configuration used in that comparison, not a universal power limit for Ryzen AI Max laptops. Likewise, the Flow Z13’s 2560 × 1600 panel and 180 Hz refresh rate are display specifications, not a recommendation to render every game at that resolution or to expect 180 FPS.
Prepare an evidence bundle for OEM support
If performance remains abnormally low after controlled testing, send support a concise, reproducible record:

- Game title and version, benchmark or scene, resolution, preset and graphics features.
- Average and one-percent-low FPS from repeated runs, with the date and whether the run was on AC or battery.
- OEM power profile, adapter details and any change between battery and AC.
- Graphics, chipset, BIOS and Windows versions, including the version installed when the issue began.
- UMA or VRAM allocation before and after any supported change.
- Temperature, clock-speed and package-power readings at the start and end of a long run.
- A clear timeline showing whether the slowdown followed a driver, BIOS, Windows or game update.
Include screenshots or logs from the OEM utility when possible, and state which step restored or failed to restore the baseline. This gives support enough information to distinguish a game-specific problem from a power-policy, driver, memory or thermal issue.

The following specifications are included only to show why the exact SKU matters when reporting results. Other Ryzen AI Max laptops can use different panels, memory capacities and cooling designs.
