Troubleshoot a co-packaged optics (CPO) switch link by locating the first layer that fails: the switch ASIC’s electrical interface, the optical engine’s optical signal, or the end-to-end Ethernet function. Start with the platform’s own alarms, counters and loopbacks; then use accessible electrical, optical and Ethernet test points to correlate bit errors, eye and spectrum measurements, frames and FEC. Do not replace a laser or optical engine until you have confirmed the architecture and the vendor’s service boundary.
CPO designs place optical engines beside the switching ASIC, but they do not all expose the same test points or serviceable parts. An external laser source may be replaceable at a faceplate in one design, while an optical engine inside the switch enclosure may require depot repair or complete switch replacement.
Why CPO link failures are difficult to localize
A failed link can be reported as a single Ethernet symptom even when the underlying cause is electrical, optical, mechanical or software-related. CPO shortens the distance between the switch ASIC and optics, which improves signal reach inside the package but puts more optical components and fiber handling into a dense assembly. The result is a different service model from a switch that uses removable front-panel transceivers.

That distinction determines whether a laser can be serviced without removing the switch. A CPO optical engine itself is often located inside the switch and is not automatically field-replaceable, as discussed in Corning’s 2024 fiber-infrastructure white paper.

Use the following rule throughout the investigation: an alarm identifies a symptom, not necessarily the failed component. A local loss-of-signal alarm, rising FEC corrections, a poor optical eye and an electrical BER result may all describe the same failing link from different observation points. The first objective is to establish which layer fails first and whether the result follows a lane, an optical path, a peer port or the switch itself.
1. Establish the platform scope and architecture
Record a reproducible failure snapshot
Before reseating anything or clearing counters, record the facts that allow another engineer to reproduce the event:
- Switch model, hardware revision and software or firmware version.
- Chassis, slot, port, lane and breakout mapping.
- Local link state and the peer endpoint’s state.
- Time the failure began, whether it is continuous or intermittent, and whether it follows a reboot or maintenance event.
- Interface alarms, error counters, FEC statistics, lane-level status and any vendor diagnostic output.
- Temperature, fan or power alarms and recent changes to cabling, optics, firmware or rack work.
Save the values before and after any intervention. A counter reset can erase the evidence needed to distinguish a persistent BER problem from a brief event.
Map the optical and electrical boundaries
Obtain the switch’s hardware diagram or service documentation and mark these boundaries:

The CPO label does not define a universal physical layout. Confirm whether the laser is integrated, connected by an internal path or supplied externally. Also confirm whether the vendor exposes an optical test port, an electrical probe point, a loopback connector or only software counters. Never infer hot-swappability from another manufacturer’s CPO implementation.
2. Identify the first failing test layer
Anritsu’s CPO performance application note separates troubleshooting into three useful test points. Treat them as a map, not as a universal field procedure.
| Test layer | What to examine | What the result can establish |
|---|---|---|
| Switch ASIC electrical signal | Electrical waveform quality, bit errors and, where supported, stressed testing. | Whether the electrical interface is producing or receiving errors before optical conversion. |
| Optical engine optical signal | Eye-pattern characteristics, optical spectrum and wavelength-related behavior. | Whether the optical signal shape or spectral output is abnormal at the available optical test point. |
| CPO switch Ethernet function | Ethernet frames, end-to-end bit errors and FEC behavior. | Whether the complete link can carry traffic and how the link’s error-correction mechanism responds. |
A clean result at one layer does not clear every downstream component. For example, acceptable electrical BER at the ASIC does not prove that the fiber path is intact, and a link that reaches “up” with heavy FEC correction is not equivalent to an error-free optical path. Correlate timestamps, lane identity and test conditions across all available layers.
3. Follow a controlled diagnostic sequence
- Confirm the failure at both endpoints. Check local and peer link state, negotiated mode, lane mapping and administrative state. Determine whether the peer reports loss of signal, lane degradation, excessive FEC corrections or a different condition. If only one endpoint reports a fault, preserve both outputs before changing configuration.
- Run platform-approved software diagnostics. Use the switch vendor’s documented status commands, lane diagnostics and supported loopbacks. Capture alarm history and counters without assuming that a generic Ethernet command exposes CPO-specific telemetry. If the platform does not document a test point, treat it as inaccessible rather than probing an unapproved location.
- Separate a peer or configuration problem from a local physical problem. When the design supports it, use an approved local loopback or connect the affected port to a known-good peer under the same mode. Keep the lane and port mapping explicit. A loopback that bypasses the external fiber can identify a path problem, but it cannot by itself clear an internal optical-engine fault.
- Check the ASIC electrical interface when accessible. Measure the electrical signal at the vendor-designated point and run BER or stressed testing using equipment compatible with the lane rate and signaling mode. Anritsu identifies the MP1900A signal quality analyzer for bit-error testing in its CPO test framework. A failed electrical result before optical conversion points toward the ASIC interface, retimer or electrical path; it does not justify replacing an optical engine without further evidence.
- Inspect the optical-engine signal. At an approved optical port, examine the eye pattern and spectrum. Look for eye closure, unexpected spectral shape, missing or shifted wavelength behavior, and lane-to-lane differences. Record the instrument setup, bandwidth, averaging and lane under test so a vendor can reproduce the measurement. Do not apply a wavelength, power or eye-mask limit from another platform.
- Verify end-to-end frames and FEC. Use the switch’s counters or an approved Ethernet analyzer to determine whether frames are being received, discarded or corrected. Record corrected and uncorrected FEC events over a defined interval, together with traffic rate and lane. A link can remain operational while FEC corrections rise; that condition is evidence of a degrading margin, not proof that FEC itself is the failed component.
- Correlate and classify the fault. Compare the first timestamped failure at each layer. If the problem follows a particular lane or fiber when the peer is changed, investigate that path. If it remains on the same switch port with a known-good path, investigate the local electrical or optical assembly. If all lanes fail together after a power, firmware or thermal event, treat the common supply, control plane and environmental conditions as suspects before replacing a lane-level part.
- Change one approved variable at a time. Reseat or clean a connector only under the vendor’s procedure, then record the result. Do not combine a firmware change, fiber replacement and laser swap in one maintenance window; doing so destroys the ability to identify the cause.
4. Inspect the fiber path and its handling
Look for mechanical damage, not just visible breaks
Dense CPO assemblies can fail without an obvious severed fiber. Corning’s infrastructure guidance calls attention to fiber breaks, surface damage, tensile stress, coating integrity and bend configurations. Inspect the complete route from the optical engine or faceplate connection to the peer, including fan-outs and areas disturbed during rack work.

- Check for bend radii tighter than the assembly specification, sharp edge contact and repeated flexing at a connector or strain-relief point.
- Look for crushed or flattened sections, scrape marks, nicks in the coating and signs that a cable has been pulled by its fiber rather than its connector body.
- Verify that cable weight is supported by the intended management hardware and that door, tray or fan movement cannot apply intermittent tensile stress.
- Compare the affected lane’s routing with a neighboring known-good lane. A lane-specific physical difference is valuable evidence even when the connector appears clean.
Use approved inspection, cleaning and power procedures
Follow the switch or assembly vendor’s instructions for connector inspection, cleaning, reseating and optical-power measurement. The available CPO guidance does not define one cleaning sequence or one acceptable power threshold for every platform. Use the connector type, fiber assembly specification and transceiver or optical-engine limits that apply to the installed design.
After any cleaning or reseating, recheck both the physical latch and the lane mapping. A connector that is partly engaged can produce intermittent errors that resemble a marginal optical engine. Record before-and-after optical readings when the platform exposes them, and avoid repeatedly mating a contaminated connector because debris can damage the end face.
5. Decide whether the laser source is serviceable
External laser source
Some CPO architectures place the laser source outside the switch’s main package and provide a faceplate-accessible module. The OIF framework identifies serviceability as a benefit: a failed external source may be exchanged without removing the switch from service. That arrangement also adds optical insertion loss, which the link budget must accommodate.

Confirm that the replacement is the exact source type and is supported by the switch firmware and optical budget. An external laser category is not an interchangeable standard across vendors; connector, wavelength, control interface and qualification all matter.

Integrated laser or internal optical engine
If the laser is integrated with the optical engine or the engine is mounted inside the switch, a faceplate swap may not be possible. Corning’s CPO technical overview describes the close integration of optics and switching hardware; the 2024 infrastructure paper notes that many engine components reside inside the switch and may not be field-repairable.
Use the service manual to determine whether the approved action is a board replacement, chassis replacement or depot repair. Do not remove an internal engine, defeat a cover interlock or attempt a hot swap unless the manufacturer explicitly documents that procedure. A measured optical symptom can justify escalation without proving that the engine is replaceable.
Replacement decision checklist
- Is the suspected component explicitly listed as field-replaceable for this exact switch model and revision?
- Does the service procedure require traffic evacuation, a power-down or a complete chassis removal?
- Are the source’s wavelength, connector, control protocol and optical budget documented?
- Have electrical, optical and Ethernet results ruled out the peer, fiber path and configuration?
- Can the replacement be validated with the same lane-level tests after installation?
6. Select test equipment that matches the accessible points
Specialized instruments are useful only when the switch exposes a compatible interface and the test setup matches its signaling mode. The Anritsu application note illustrates a sampling oscilloscope, optical spectrum analyzer and Ethernet analyzer alongside a signal-quality analyzer.

| Equipment | Primary use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Anritsu MP1900A signal quality analyzer | Electrical bit-error and stressed testing in a CPO test setup. | Requires a compatible electrical test point, lane rate and fixture; it is specialized lab or production equipment. |
| Sampling oscilloscope | Electrical or optical waveform and eye-pattern observation, depending on probes and setup. | Probe loading, bandwidth and calibration can change the result; use the vendor-approved connection. |
| Optical spectrum analyzer | Optical spectrum and wavelength-related measurements. | Needs an accessible optical path and suitable resolution; a spectrum result alone does not prove Ethernet functionality. |
| Ethernet analyzer | Frame transmission, error observation and FEC behavior at the functional layer. | Must support the link mode and provide a controlled traffic pattern; it cannot replace an optical measurement. |
Instrument compatibility, fixtures, calibration and probe access are platform-specific. If the switch provides no approved test port, use its telemetry and escalate rather than opening the package to create one.

7. Interpret common symptom patterns
| Observed pattern | Most useful next checks |
|---|---|
| All lanes drop simultaneously | Check common power, thermal and control alarms, firmware events, peer state and any shared optical source before focusing on one lane. |
| One lane shows persistent BER or FEC errors | Compare that lane’s electrical result, optical eye or spectrum, connector route and lane mapping with a neighboring lane. |
| Link is up but uncorrected errors increase | Capture traffic rate and FEC counters, then inspect optical margin and physical handling; do not treat “up” as proof of a healthy path. |
| Errors appear when the rack door, tray or cable is moved | Inspect bend radius, strain relief, coating damage and connector engagement; perform a controlled movement test only if the vendor permits it. |
| Optical spectrum or eye is abnormal while ASIC electrical BER is clean | Investigate the optical engine, laser source and fiber path at the approved optical point, while checking source alarms and wavelength assignment. |
| Failure follows the fiber or peer after a controlled change | Prioritize the external path, connector assembly or peer interface; preserve the original port and lane evidence before further changes. |
8. Escalate with evidence the vendor can use
Escalation is appropriate when test access, optical budgets, supported loopbacks or replacement boundaries are not documented for the specific platform. Send a compact, time-stamped package rather than a conclusion such as “bad optics.” Include:
- Model, hardware revision, software or firmware version and topology diagram.
- Port, lane, peer endpoint and breakout mapping.
- Alarm history and counter snapshots before and after the event.
- Local and peer link state, FEC corrected and uncorrected counts, and traffic conditions.
- Optical power, eye or spectrum results with instrument model, setup and test point.
- Electrical BER or stressed-test results, including lane rate and fixture.
- Fiber routing photographs or inspection findings, connector history and maintenance timeline.
- Environmental context such as temperature, fan, power and recent rack work.
- Every intervention already performed and the exact result after each one.
Ask the vendor to identify the supported loopback, the applicable optical and electrical limits, and the authorized replacement boundary for that switch revision. This prevents a generic threshold or a procedure from another CPO platform being applied to the wrong design.
Common troubleshooting mistakes to avoid
- Replacing the laser first: A link alarm does not prove laser failure; fiber damage, electrical BER, configuration and peer faults can produce the same symptom.
- Assuming every CPO laser is hot-swappable: Only an explicitly documented external source has a potential faceplate service boundary.
- Calling an optical-engine fault from Ethernet counters alone: End-to-end FEC and frame errors locate a functional problem, not necessarily its physical cause.
- Using universal thresholds: BER, optical power, wavelength, eye-mask and FEC limits depend on lane rate, design and vendor qualification.
- Ignoring mechanical history: A recent cable move, tray change or connector reseat can be more informative than a new alarm.
- Clearing counters before saving them: This removes the time relationship needed for correlation.
- Changing several variables at once: A simultaneous fiber swap, firmware update and module replacement prevents causal isolation.
- Opening the package to reach a test point: Use only approved interfaces; internal probing can damage the assembly and void service coverage.
What a defensible diagnosis looks like
A defensible diagnosis states the first failing layer, the evidence that separates it from adjacent layers, and the service action authorized for that architecture. For example, “lane 3 shows repeatable electrical BER at the approved ASIC-side test point, while the optical spectrum and peer fiber are normal” is a bounded finding. “The CPO optics are bad” is not.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen evidence is mixed, report the uncertainty explicitly: identify which layers were tested, which points were inaccessible and what additional measurement would discriminate between the remaining causes. The OIF framework, Anritsu test map and Corning fiber guidance provide a sound structure, but the switch vendor’s documentation controls the actual thresholds, fixtures, loopbacks and replacement procedure.
