Short answer: standard PC-game streaming to a Nintendo DSi is not a supported setup. Nintendo documents the DSi Browser as handling HTTP and HTTPS but not video playback, including AVI and WMV. The documented Moonlight client list includes Android, iOS, PC and ChromeOS, not the DSi. Router tweaks can improve an ordinary DSi internet connection, but they cannot add video decoding or turn the Browser into a supported game-streaming client.
This guide separates the two problems that are often confused: an unsupported attempt to display a PC game on a DSi, and a normal DSi Wi-Fi or internet connection failure. Follow the second set of checks only for features the DSi actually supports.
Establish what is failing before changing the network
Streaming has three separate requirements: a compatible client application, a network path that can carry the stream, and hardware/software able to decode and display the video. A failure in the first or third requirement cannot be repaired by changing channels, buying a faster router or moving the console closer to an access point.

Nintendo’s DSi documentation says the Browser supports HTTP and HTTPS. It also states that video types such as AVI and WMV will not play. That is a media-playback limitation, not a symptom of insufficient bandwidth. A PC game stream still has to arrive as continuously changing video, be decoded and be rendered on the handheld screen. If the DSi Browser cannot play video, a normal browser-based streaming page cannot become a playable game feed simply because the Wi-Fi signal is stronger.

The DSi is not a documented Moonlight client
Moonlight’s official client guidance lists Android, iOS, PC and ChromeOS clients. The DSi is not listed. Therefore, do not describe a DSi as a supported Moonlight endpoint or assume that Moonlight’s settings will make one work. The absence of the DSi from that list does not prove that no experimental homebrew project has ever been attempted; it does mean that the reviewed official documentation provides no supported installation or troubleshooting path for it.
Why a “lag” symptom can be misleading
When an unsupported setup shows a blank page, a loading spinner, a frozen frame or no playable media, it is tempting to call the behavior lag. Those symptoms can occur before a game stream is ever decoded. Test the endpoint capability first. If the client cannot play the stream, reducing bitrate or improving signal strength does not solve the underlying problem.
Separate DSi connection errors from streaming incompatibility
Use the symptom, not the hope that a network change will help, to choose a troubleshooting path.

How to troubleshoot an ordinary DSi internet or Wi-Fi connection
These checks are for DSi features that are designed to use the internet. They may restore browsing or another supported network function; they do not add game-streaming support.
1. Confirm that the access point and internet connection work
- Check that another device can reach the internet through the same wireless access point.
- Confirm that the access point is powered on and is not reporting an outage, authentication failure or device-capacity limit.
- If the network has just failed temporarily, wait briefly and retry the DSi connection. A temporary router or service problem must be resolved at the network level before the DSi can connect.
Nintendo’s general connectivity guidance calls for broadband service and a wireless router. It cautions that cellular and satellite connections may introduce performance problems and latency for online use, so they are a poor basis for diagnosing a stable home connection.

2. Recheck the saved SSID
Open the DSi’s wireless connection settings and compare the saved network name with the access point’s actual SSID. A nearly identical name, a hidden network, or a mesh system’s different band name can cause the console to associate with the wrong entry. Delete or edit the saved connection if necessary, then select the correct SSID again.
3. Verify the security type and key
The security method and wireless key stored on the DSi must match the access point. Re-enter the key carefully, including capitalization and punctuation. An incorrect key can look like a general connection failure even when the access point is operating normally. If the router offers several security modes, use the mode that the DSi model and its documented connection settings support rather than assuming that every modern option is compatible.

4. Check automatic IP configuration and DHCP
For an automatic setup, confirm that the DSi is obtaining its network information through DHCP. The router must have DHCP enabled and must have an available address to assign. If the DSi is configured manually, review every value and look specifically for an address conflict with another device. A duplicate address can allow an intermittent connection or prevent traffic from reaching the intended device.
- Use automatic IP assignment unless you have a specific reason to configure an address manually.
- If manual addressing is required, ensure the chosen address is unique on the local network.
- Check that the gateway and other required network values belong to the same local network as the access point.
- After changing a value, save the profile and run the DSi connection test again.
5. Improve the radio signal
If the DSi reports a weak signal or cannot find the access point, move it closer to the access point and reduce the number of walls, furniture items and other obstructions between them. Nintendo’s Operations Manual puts the practical instruction plainly: “Try moving closer to your access point, and make sure there are no people, objects, or other obstacles between the system and the access point.”
Test from the same room before making more complicated changes. If the connection works nearby but fails at the usual playing position, the evidence points to signal path or interference rather than an incorrect password. This can improve ordinary DSi connectivity; it still cannot enable video playback.

6. Consider access-point limits and temporary network conditions
Some routers refuse new associations after reaching a device limit, while others temporarily stop accepting connections during a restart or fault. Disconnect an unused device if the access point is full, allow a restarting router to finish, and retry. Follow the router’s own configuration guidance rather than repeatedly changing DSi settings when other devices are also being rejected.

7. Re-run the DSi connection test after each meaningful change
Change one category at a time—SSID or key, IP/DHCP, physical position or access-point state—and test again. Keeping the previous settings available makes it easier to reverse a change that did not help. A successful connection test proves that the DSi can reach the network; it does not prove that a video-streaming application or format is supported.
What to do when the real goal is PC-game streaming
If the goal is to play a PC game remotely, move the streaming endpoint to hardware with a documented client and video-decoding support. The following practices come from Moonlight’s guidance for supported clients and should not be presented as a way to upgrade a DSi.
Choose a documented client platform
Use an Android, iOS, PC or ChromeOS device with the appropriate streaming client. Verify the current official client documentation before installation because supported platforms and requirements can change. Do not install an unrelated DSi Browser page and expect it to behave like one of those clients.
Give the host PC a wired path where possible
Moonlight recommends connecting the host computer to the router by Ethernet when possible. A wired host avoids one wireless hop and reduces the chance that the PC’s own Wi-Fi traffic competes with the stream. This recommendation concerns the supported streaming architecture: host PC, network and compatible client.

Use a strong 5 GHz connection for the supported client
Moonlight recommends 5 GHz wireless networking for the client when available, together with a strong signal. A 5 GHz setting can reduce congestion in some homes, but it does not give the DSi Browser video-decoding capability. Treat radio-band selection as a network optimization only after the endpoint is known to support streaming.
Start with conservative stream settings
Moonlight’s setup guidance includes bitrate controls and a 720p at 30 frames per second suggestion for supported clients. Begin conservatively, confirm that the stream is stable, then increase quality in small steps if the client and network have headroom. If the image becomes choppy after a bitrate increase, return to the last stable setting and investigate congestion or host load. Do not interpret a 720p30 setting as a format that the DSi is documented to decode.
Test the supported path in layers
- Confirm that the client application opens and can discover or reach the host PC.
- Start a low-quality stream and verify that video and controls work.
- Watch for stutter while no other large transfer is running.
- Increase resolution or bitrate one setting at a time.
- If the stream degrades, check the host’s wired connection, the client’s Wi-Fi strength and competing traffic before changing multiple variables.
This process diagnoses a supported streaming system. It cannot convert a DSi into a Moonlight client.

Common mistakes and why they fail
“A faster router will make the DSi decode the stream”
A faster or newer router can improve ordinary network throughput, but decoding occurs at the endpoint. Because Nintendo documents the Browser as not supporting video playback, router speed cannot supply the missing media function.

“Switching to 5 GHz will remove the DSi lag”
5 GHz is a Moonlight recommendation for supported clients. It is not a documented DSi video feature. If the DSi cannot connect to an access point, solve the SSID, security, DHCP and signal problem first; if it connects but cannot play video, a band change addresses the wrong layer.

“A stronger antenna or cable is the fix”
Accessories may alter a home network, but no reviewed documentation establishes a product that makes the DSi a compatible video-streaming endpoint. Hardware purchases should not be presented as a solution to the Browser’s documented limitation.
“A loading screen proves the stream is almost working”
A page can load over HTTP or HTTPS while its embedded video cannot play. Separate successful page retrieval from successful media decoding. The former demonstrates network access; it does not demonstrate streaming compatibility.
When an experimental homebrew setup is involved
Official Nintendo documentation and the reviewed Moonlight client guide do not establish a supported DSi game-streaming method. An experimental homebrew project, if one exists, would have its own software, codec, firmware and network requirements. Do not apply instructions for an unrelated client or assume that official DSi Browser behavior covers a modified system.
Before troubleshooting such a project, identify its exact client name, required DSi model and firmware, supported video format, host software and maintainer documentation. Without those details, there is no reliable way to distinguish a project-specific bug from the DSi Browser’s documented lack of video playback. Keep any modified-system troubleshooting separate from the ordinary connection checks in this guide.
A practical decision checklist
- Are you trying to display a PC game on the DSi? Treat the standard setup as unsupported because the DSi Browser is not documented for video playback and the DSi is not a listed Moonlight client.
- Can the DSi connect to an access point for a supported feature? Check internet access, SSID, security type and key, DHCP/IP settings, access-point availability and signal strength.
- Is the signal weak? Move closer and remove obstacles before changing advanced settings.
- Does the access point reject several devices? Investigate its device limit or a temporary router/service fault.
- Do you need PC-game streaming? Use a documented client on Android, iOS, PC or ChromeOS, with a wired host where possible and strong client Wi-Fi.
- Does a supported client still stutter? Lower bitrate or resolution, check host wiring and client signal, and test for competing traffic one change at a time.
Bottom line
There is no ordinary lag fix that makes a DSi a supported PC-game-streaming endpoint. Troubleshoot the DSi’s Wi-Fi only when its connection to a supported internet feature is failing. For game streaming, use a documented client platform and apply network tuning—such as a wired host, strong 5 GHz client connection and conservative bitrate—on that supported path.
