If Jetpack stopped working after a plugin update, first identify the exact symptom, confirm that the site is publicly reachable, check Jetpack service status, and run the Jetpack Debug Tool. Do not immediately disconnect Jetpack or deactivate everything on a live site. A controlled test in Troubleshooting Mode or on staging can show whether the updated plugin, another plugin, the theme, a blocked XML-RPC request, or a changed site identity is responsible.
This guide gives you a safe sequence for diagnosing connection warnings, missing features, PHP errors, failed automatic updates, and staging or domain-change problems while minimizing disruption to visitors.
Start by classifying exactly what broke
“Jetpack stopped working” can describe several different failures. The first check determines which branch of troubleshooting is relevant:

- Frontend problem: a widget, sharing button, related-post section, image feature, or other visible element disappeared or renders incorrectly.
- WordPress admin or PHP problem: the dashboard shows a fatal error, blank screen, warning, or an error referring to Jetpack or the plugin that was updated.
- Feature-specific problem: Jetpack loads, but one module no longer works.
- Connection problem: My Jetpack reports that the site is disconnected, cannot communicate with WordPress.com, or needs attention.
- Update problem: an automatic update was expected but did not run, or the installed version is not the version you intended to test.
Write down the Jetpack version, the updated plugin and its version, the approximate update time, the affected feature, and the complete error text. Also record whether the problem affects every visitor or only your administrator session. This information prevents you from treating a display regression as a connection failure.

Check service availability and diagnostics before changing settings
Verify that the site is reachable
Open the public site in a private browser window or from a separate network. If the site itself is unavailable, Jetpack cannot complete a meaningful connection test. Check the hosting control panel and any uptime monitor before changing WordPress settings.
Check Jetpack service status
Jetpack’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking its service-status information first. If an outage or scheduled maintenance is affecting Jetpack, wait for the service to recover and retest. Changing connection tokens, plugins, or firewall rules during an outage can create a second problem without fixing the first.
Run the Jetpack Debug Tool
Open the Jetpack Debug Tool from the Jetpack support or diagnostic area and review every failed check, not just the headline result. Note whether it reports a connection, XML-RPC, SSL, HTTP, or server response issue. Then open Tools → Site Health in WordPress and inspect the Jetpack-related tests and recommended actions. Save the results before you begin making changes so you can compare them after each fix.

Protect the live site before testing conflicts
Back up first
Jetpack recommends a current backup before deactivating plugins or changing the theme. Confirm that you can restore both the database and uploaded files, and note the backup time. A backup is especially important when the update produced a fatal error, because conflict testing can expose additional compatibility problems.

Prefer staging when it is available
A staging copy isolates tests from production. Clone the site, verify that the copy works independently, and set WP_ENVIRONMENT_TYPE to staging on that copy. Jetpack uses the staging designation to protect the live connection and settings while you test. Do not let a staging clone send data to production or take over the production site’s identity.
Use session-only Troubleshooting Mode on a live site
If staging is unavailable, install or activate the official Troubleshooting plugin. In WP Admin, go to Tools → Site Health → Troubleshooting and enable Troubleshooting Mode. Plugins are disabled only for the logged-in administrator’s session, and you can switch themes for that session. Visitors continue to see the normal site with its usual plugins and theme. This lets you test without taking features away from customers.
Exit Troubleshooting Mode when testing is complete. Your normal theme and plugins return for your session; the mode does not delete or permanently deactivate them.

Deactivating plugins directly on a live site affects every visitor and may remove forms, security controls, caching, or other essential functions. If neither staging nor Troubleshooting Mode is possible, back up first, choose a low-traffic period, record the current active-plugin list, and restore the original state promptly after each test.

Isolate the plugin or theme conflict
Use one change at a time. After each change, reproduce the original symptom and record the result. A conflict is identified by the smallest combination that makes the problem return.
- Start with a default WordPress theme. In Troubleshooting Mode or staging, switch temporarily to a current default theme. Test the affected Jetpack feature. If the symptom disappears, the active theme or one of its integrations is implicated. Keep the default theme only for diagnosis, then ask the theme developer for a compatibility fix or select a compatible alternative.
- Enable Jetpack by itself. Leave other plugins disabled and retest. If the issue returns with Jetpack alone, use Jetpack’s feature or module controls to narrow the failing feature, then follow the connection and error checks in the sections below.
- Enable other plugins one at a time. After enabling each plugin, clear any relevant cache, reload the affected page, and repeat the same action that originally failed. The last plugin enabled before the symptom returns is the leading conflict candidate.
- Confirm the result. Disable the suspected plugin and retest Jetpack. Then enable it again once to verify that the failure reliably returns. Contact that plugin’s developer with the versions, error text, and reproduction steps, or leave it disabled while waiting for a compatible release.
- Restore the intended configuration. Return to the production theme and approved plugins, then retest the site as an unauthenticated visitor and as an administrator.
Caching can make this process look inconsistent. Some page caches, object caches, host-level caches, and optimization layers do not respect Troubleshooting Mode. Clear the relevant caches and repeat a test if a feature appears fixed in one session but broken in another.
Use the symptom pattern to narrow the suspect

Fix Jetpack connection errors without creating new ones
Test the XML-RPC endpoint
Jetpack depends on the site’s xmlrpc.php endpoint. A working endpoint should respond with the exact message XML-RPC server accepts POST requests only. when it receives an ordinary browser request. A 404 or “Not Found” response can mean that a host security rule is blocking the endpoint or that the file is missing or misplaced. It is a host or installation problem, not a reason to change unrelated WordPress options at random.
Check the endpoint using your site’s own domain followed by /xmlrpc.php. If the response is missing, blocked, or replaced by a firewall page, save the response details and contact the host.

Investigate blocked WordPress.com requests
When Site Health says that WordPress.com requests to the site are blocked, a firewall, web application firewall, server rule, or security plugin may be stopping requests to xmlrpc.php. Review the Site Health explanation, inspect security-plugin rules, and ask the host to allow legitimate WordPress.com requests.
Jetpack states that the connection tokens remain valid when requests are blocked. Disconnecting and reconnecting does not remove a firewall rule. After the block is removed, the notice should clear during Jetpack’s next check, which Jetpack says runs once per day. Retest after allowing the requests rather than repeatedly generating new tokens.
Disconnect and reconnect only when diagnostics call for it
A reconnect is appropriate when the Debug Tool indicates a damaged or invalid connection rather than a blocked request. The documented route is:

- Choose Disconnect Jetpack and confirm.
- Return to My Jetpack and complete the connection flow again.
- Run the Jetpack Debug Tool once more and compare the result with your original notes.
Do not use this procedure to mask an XML-RPC or firewall failure. Resolve the underlying block first.

Check whether the update actually ran
Automatic plugin updates depend on WordPress Cron. If the update may not have completed, open Tools → Site Health and inspect Cron-related errors and the instructions attached to them. A disabled, failing, or delayed Cron system can leave the old plugin version active while you troubleshoot a change that never reached the site.
In the Plugins screen, verify the installed version rather than relying on an email or an update notice. Review the offered update notes and record the version currently installed. If a rollback or reinstallation is necessary, take a fresh backup and use staging when possible so you can establish which version changes the behavior.
Handle Safe Mode after a domain or environment change
A domain migration, staging clone, URL change, or switch between production and testing can trigger a Jetpack identity warning that is separate from plugin compatibility. Jetpack ties a site connection ID and token to the site URL. When the URL changes, Jetpack may not be able to determine safely whether the established site moved or whether a genuinely separate site was created.

Before choosing, confirm which URL is production, which URL is the clone, and where the database was copied from. Selecting the wrong option can attach test activity to the production site or split an established site’s history.
Capture PHP errors with temporary debug logging
If the browser shows only a generic error, enable WordPress debugging temporarily. In wp-config.php, use the following constants above the line that says WordPress editing should stop:

define( 'WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY', false );This records errors in wp-content/debug.log without displaying stack traces to visitors. Reproduce the Jetpack failure once, then inspect entries mentioning Jetpack, the updated plugin, the theme, or a shared library. Include the timestamp and complete error in a support request. If you cannot access the file, ask the host for help.
Debug logging is a diagnostic setting, not a permanent production configuration. Remove or comment out the constants after diagnosis. Leaving debugging enabled can expose implementation details or sensitive paths to visitors if display settings change or another component overrides them.

A compact recovery checklist
- Record the updated plugin, versions, time, affected feature, and complete error.
- Confirm that the public site is reachable.
- Check Jetpack service status, run the Jetpack Debug Tool, and inspect Tools → Site Health.
- Back up before changing plugins or themes.
- Use staging or session-only Troubleshooting Mode instead of disabling plugins for visitors.
- Test a default theme, then Jetpack alone, then re-enable plugins one at a time.
- Clear caches when results do not match between sessions.
- Check
xmlrpc.phpand resolve host or firewall blocks before attempting a reconnect. - Verify WordPress Cron and the installed plugin version if an automatic update is in doubt.
- Use Safe Mode choices based on whether the URL is a migration, a new site, or a staging clone.

- Escalate with evidence to the plugin developer, theme developer, host, or Jetpack support team.
