If vLLM Semantic Router sends a request to an unexpected model, do not start by changing thresholds. First identify the first stage that diverges from your expectation: the requested alias, entrypoint or recipe, extracted signals, matched decision, eligible candidate set, selection algorithm, or backend metadata. Capture the running configuration, logs, routing headers, and a reproducible request, then change one variable at a time.

Start with evidence, not policy changes

An “incorrect model” can mean several different things. The public model name may resolve to the wrong entrypoint, the intended decision may not match, a valid decision may expose a different candidate set, a selector may choose another eligible model, or the backend may return metadata that does not describe the Router’s decision. Treat these as separate failure classes.

The project’s common-errors guide recommends checking status, Router and Envoy logs, and configuration validity before editing multiple settings. Use the commands below as a baseline, adapting paths and log collection to your installed release and deployment target. See the common-errors guide.

Understand the route that must be debugged

Semantic Router processes a request in a defined sequence. The requested model name is resolved to an entrypoint and recipe. The recipe determines how signals are extracted and how routing decisions are evaluated. A matching decision constrains the eligible models. The configured algorithm then selects one candidate (or coordinates a bounded multi-model strategy), route plugins run, and Envoy forwards the request to the selected backend. If no decision matches, the recipe’s configured default provider model can be used. This lifecycle is described in the system overview.

Stage What to verify Typical symptom when it is wrong
Model alias and entrypoint The client’s model value and the entrypoint or recipe that receives it Requests bypass the policy you edited or always use a default
Signal extraction The classifier, keyword, embedding, language, or other signals produced for this request The expected rule never has the condition needed to match
Decision matching Decision order, operators, conditions, and enabled policy A different decision wins, or no decision matches
Candidate set The decision’s declared modelRefs and each model’s eligibility The selected model is valid but not the one you expected to be available
Selection algorithm Static, learned, or other algorithm attached to the matching decision The same route can choose different candidates as scores or inputs change
Backend and metadata Connectivity from Router to backend and the meaning of response fields Generation fails, or response model disagrees with Router evidence

Use this order for diagnosis. It prevents a classifier threshold change from masking a bad alias or a missing candidate.

1. Capture the running context

Write down these values before reproducing the problem:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The deployed Semantic Router release or image tag.
  • Whether it runs directly on a host, in a container, or in Kubernetes; include the namespace, deployment, and pod when applicable.
  • The configuration file, managed Recipe workspace, and any overlays or environment variables that select them.
  • The exact request model name. Distinguish a virtual alias such as vllm-sr/auto from an explicit physical model name.
  • The request body, relevant headers, timestamp, and the backend endpoints that were expected to serve it.

Virtual model names let the Router own policy routing. An explicit physical model name can pass through without the recipe’s signals, decisions, or route plugins, depending on the configured entrypoint. The overview explains this distinction; verify the behavior against your deployed release rather than assuming every model name enters the same policy path.

Local or container deployments

Run the baseline commands from the environment that controls the Router. A host-side configuration file may not be the file mounted inside a container. Check the container’s effective arguments, environment, mounts, and current working directory before validating a similarly named host file.

Kubernetes deployments

Collect the Router pod’s status and logs, the Envoy or gateway logs, the active ConfigMap or Secret references, and the pod specification that mounts the configuration. A backend reachable from your laptop may be unreachable from the Router pod’s network policy or DNS context. Preserve the pod and image identifiers with your test request.

2. Verify the active configuration and workspace

Many routing investigations fail because the operator validates one file while the Router reads another. Confirm the effective --config path, whether relative paths resolve from the process working directory, and whether the file is mounted inside the Router container. Also check read permission on the file and execute/traverse permission on every parent directory. Managed Recipe deployments require checking the workspace selected by the running service, not just a local YAML copy.

Run validation against the exact source that the Router loads:

vllm-sr config validate --config /path/used/by/the-router/config.yaml

Follow the field path in every validation error. Configuration errors are location-sensitive: a valid-looking key under the wrong parent can be ignored or rejected even if the spelling is correct. Use the release-matched vllm-sr CLI README and the project’s configuration guide as the field reference.

Check the v0.3 canonical layout

The CLI README identifies the current canonical v0.3 YAML shape. At a minimum, confirm that the file has the expected top-level sections and that routing policy is nested under routing.decisions[], not under an older or invented path.

Section Role in routing Verification question
version Declares the configuration schema version Does it match the schema supported by the deployed release?
listeners Defines management and inference-facing listeners Are clients calling the listener that carries routing policy?
providers Describes backend model providers and endpoints Do names referenced by decisions resolve to configured providers?
routing Contains policy and decision configuration Is the intended policy under routing.decisions[]?
global Holds global behavior supported by the schema Could a global default or override affect this request?

Do not copy fields from a different release into a v0.3 file. If validation identifies a path, correct that path first and restart or reload the Router according to the deployment’s documented procedure before testing again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Confirm the request enters the intended recipe

Send the smallest representative request that still exhibits the problem. Compare the client’s requested model with the model name expected by the entrypoint. A typo, an alias used by a proxy, or a client that silently substitutes a physical model can move the request outside the recipe you are debugging.

For an explicit physical model request, determine whether pass-through behavior is intentional. If you need signals and decisions to run, use the virtual alias configured for policy routing and test through the routed inference listener. Do not infer entrypoint selection from the response body alone; capture Router logs and routing headers at the same time.

When no decision matches

A request can be healthy yet use an unexpected model because no decision matched and the recipe’s default provider model took over. That is different from a selector choosing the wrong candidate. Prove or disprove this case by checking the matched-decision evidence in the response and Router logs before changing conditions or thresholds.

4. Expose the matched decision and extracted signals

The installation documentation describes a request-debugging mode. Send the representative request with x-vsr-debug: true through the routed inference listener. The response should expose:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • x-vsr-selected-decision: the decision used for the route.
  • x-vsr-selected-model: the model selected by the Router.
  • x-vsr-matched-* headers in debug mode: signals that matched for the request.

Use the exact header spelling and casing shown by your client or proxy, and preserve all response headers when capturing evidence. The documented header behavior is in the installation guide.

curl -i http://<inference-listener>/v1/chat/completions
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json'
  -H 'x-vsr-debug: true'
  -d '{
    "model": "vllm-sr/auto",
    "messages": [{"role":"user","content":"A representative test prompt"}]
  }'

Replace the host, path, model alias, and prompt with values valid for your deployment. A one-line smoke prompt can exercise a different signal path from production traffic, so use a prompt that reliably reproduces the reported route while avoiding sensitive data in shared logs.

Correlate headers with logs

Record the request timestamp and correlate the selected decision, selected model, extracted signals, and backend target in Router logs. If a proxy strips custom headers, capture the response at the Router or adjust the proxy only for the diagnostic request. A missing header at the client does not prove that the Router failed to select a route.

The common-errors documentation also recommends replay and debug inspection for signal matches, including security-related rules such as jailbreak detection. Use that facility to see whether a condition was absent, false, or evaluated against a different representation of the request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Inspect decision order, operators, and conditions

Once you know which signals were produced, inspect the matching decision itself. Verify the operator semantics, exact field names, value types, and condition combinations. Check whether an earlier broad decision matches before the specific rule you intended. Also verify that the rule is enabled in the active recipe and that any referenced signal is available for this request type.

  • If the expected decision is absent from x-vsr-selected-decision, compare its conditions with the debug x-vsr-matched-* headers.
  • If a different decision is selected, inspect ordering and overlapping conditions before editing model providers.
  • If no decision is selected, inspect the recipe default and then fix the missing signal or condition.
  • If headers and logs disagree, establish which component generated each record and check for stale pods or mixed versions.

Make one rule change at a time. Validate the YAML, reload the Router, and rerun the same request so the before-and-after evidence remains comparable.

6. Check the eligible candidate set and selector

A matching decision does not mean every configured model is eligible. The decision’s modelRefs define the candidate set used by its selection algorithm. Inspect each reference for spelling, provider association, health, and eligibility in the active recipe.

For learned model selectors, selection happens only after a routing decision matches. The selector scores candidates from that decision’s modelRefs; the selected name must match one of those candidates. If it does not, the request fails rather than silently falling back to another model. The selector documentation describes learned selectors as experimental and recommends representative query-to-model outcome data and evaluation. See ML Model Selectors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Evidence Interpretation Next check
Decision is correct; selected model is in modelRefs The route and candidate set are working; the algorithm chose that candidate Inspect algorithm inputs, scores, and workload expectations
Decision is correct; selected model is not in modelRefs Configuration, version skew, or evidence collection is inconsistent Validate the active recipe and compare Router logs with the deployed build
No decision; default model appears The candidate selector was not reached for this request Fix alias, signals, or decision conditions
Selector reports an unknown model The selected name does not resolve to a declared candidate Correct model references or selector output; do not expect silent fallback

For a route that does not need learned behavior, the selector documentation lists static and other non-learned algorithms. Choose based on the workload and evaluation data rather than switching algorithms as a blind troubleshooting step.

7. Separate Router health from backend generation health

Semantic Router exposes management and inference functions on different listeners in the standard setup. The management API is normally on port 8080, while the inference listener is normally on port 8899; confirm actual ports in listeners for your deployment. The CLI README explicitly warns that a healthy Router does not prove that an external backend can generate a response. See the CLI README.

Check the public catalog

Call /v1/models on the inference listener and compare the returned catalog with the model names referenced by the route. This verifies the public path and advertised names, not generation quality by itself.

curl -i http://<inference-listener>:8899/v1/models

Send a real representative request

Follow the catalog check with the same kind of completion or chat request that exposed the routing problem. Verify DNS resolution, TCP reachability, credentials, TLS, and network policy from the Router process or pod—not from your workstation. A backend can be reachable from the host and unavailable from the Router container.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The AMD ROCm installation example uses a successful routed response and selected-route/provider headers as a verification step, then recommends maintained probes and representative application requests for broader evaluation. Use that pattern as an operational check, adapting it to your hardware and deployment; see the AMD ROCm installation guide.

When response metadata names a different model

Do not treat the response body’s model field as the sole source of routing truth. Issue 430 reports a case in which response model metadata differed from the model shown in logs and by x-vsr-selected-model. That issue is a report to reproduce on the exact deployed version, not evidence that every release behaves this way. Review the report at Issue 430.

For a discrepancy, save all three values from one request:

  • The requested model in the client payload.
  • The Router’s x-vsr-selected-model and selected-decision headers, plus correlated logs.
  • The response body’s model value and any backend or provider headers.

Then repeat with a minimal request against the same build. If Router evidence consistently identifies one candidate while backend metadata identifies another, investigate response rewriting, provider naming, proxy behavior, and version-specific bugs before changing routing policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A symptom-to-check decision tree

Observed result Most useful first check Do not change yet
Every request uses one unexpected model Request alias, entrypoint mapping, active recipe, and default provider Classification thresholds
Expected rule never matches Debug signals and condition/operator spelling Backend endpoints
A broad rule wins over a specific rule Decision order and overlapping conditions Selector training data
Correct decision, unexpected candidate modelRefs, candidate eligibility, and algorithm Signal extraction rules
Correct selected model, failed generation Router-to-backend connectivity and provider health Decision policy
Successful generation, contradictory model metadata Headers, logs, proxy rewriting, and exact version Thresholds or model ranking

Change one cause at a time and evaluate the result

After identifying a likely cause, make the smallest change that tests it. Record the old and new configuration, validate it, reload the Router, and replay the same request set. Keep the request body, headers, model alias, and environment constant while testing a single change.

Do not lower classification thresholds merely because a request missed a route. The common-errors guide warns that lower thresholds can increase wrong-domain routing and recommends evaluating precision and recall on labeled traffic. A successful response to one prompt is a smoke test, not evidence that routing quality improved across the workload. Use replay, maintained probes, or a representative labeled request set, as recommended in the common-errors guide.

What to record for a defensible comparison

  • Release or image digest and configuration version.
  • Request model alias, decision headers, matched-signal headers, response model, and backend target.
  • Counts of expected versus actual decisions and selected models across the test set.
  • Errors, latency changes, and backend availability during the test window.
  • The exact single change made between runs.

Compact incident runbook

  1. Freeze the deployed version and capture the request, alias, workspace, and environment.
  2. Run vllm-sr status, collect Router and Envoy logs, and validate the active configuration.
  3. Confirm the file mount, relative path, permissions, and managed Recipe workspace.
  4. Verify that the client uses the intended virtual alias or intentionally bypasses policy with a physical name.
  5. Replay through the inference listener with x-vsr-debug: true.
  6. Record x-vsr-selected-decision, x-vsr-selected-model, all x-vsr-matched-* headers, logs, and response metadata.
  7. Trace the first divergence: alias, signals, decision, candidates, algorithm, backend, or metadata.
  8. Check /v1/models and send a representative request from the Router’s network context.
  9. Apply one targeted change, validate and reload, then rerun the unchanged test set.
  10. Keep the evidence and evaluate precision, recall, failures, and metadata consistency before promoting the change.

This sequence distinguishes a policy-selection problem from a configuration-loading problem, a candidate-selection problem, and a backend or observability problem. That distinction is what prevents repeated threshold edits from obscuring the real fault.
