If the Home Assistant app won’t update, first determine whether the update is stuck in the app store or whether the app updates but then fails when opened. On Android, start with Google Play, device connectivity, storage, and system settings; use Home Assistant’s app-specific recovery only if the app itself is misbehaving. The available guidance here does not establish a current, step-by-step fix for a stalled Home Assistant update in Apple’s App Store, so don’t apply Android instructions to an iPhone or iPad.
First identify where the Home Assistant update is failing
An “update stuck” message can mean the store cannot download or install the app, or that the update completed but Home Assistant now behaves incorrectly. These are different problems and call for different fixes.
- Several Android apps cannot update: begin with Google Play, the network, storage, Android software, and device date and time.
- Only Home Assistant cannot update: check whether its Play Store listing offers an update and whether the app is available for your device.
- The update completed, but the app is broken: move to Home Assistant’s Android app troubleshooting after ruling out a store download issue.
- You are using iOS: use current Apple App Store support guidance rather than Android procedures; the sources below do not establish an iOS-specific update-failure sequence.
Fix a stuck Home Assistant update on Android
Try the reversible checks below one at a time. Retry the update after each change so you can identify whether it helped.
1. Check the connection and available storage
Confirm that the device has a strong Wi-Fi or mobile connection, then retry the download. Check the device’s available storage as well: Google notes that low storage can prevent app downloads and installations. 2. Check Android and restart the store or device
Check for an Android system update. Then close and reopen Google Play, and retry. If the update still fails, restart the device and try again. Testing after each step helps distinguish a temporary store or device issue from a Home Assistant-specific one. Google Play’s basic troubleshooting steps
3. Verify date and time

4. Check whether the problem affects Home Assistant alone
If other apps update normally, open Home Assistant’s listing in Google Play and check whether it is available for the device. Google states that an app unavailable for a device cannot be downloaded. If the listing indicates the app is available, check whether an update is offered there before treating the issue as a problem inside Home Assistant. Google Play’s guidance for a problem with one app

- Open the Google Play Store and tap your profile icon.
- Tap Manage apps and device, then Updates available and See details.
- Tap Update beside Home Assistant, if the option appears.

If Home Assistant updates but the Android app behaves incorrectly
Home Assistant’s Android troubleshooting is intended for app problems, not as a general fix for every Play Store download failure. Before its more disruptive recovery procedure, check that Home Assistant Core, the Companion app, and Android System WebView are up to date. Use the “start fresh” procedure only as a later recovery step

- Clear the Home Assistant app’s storage or data on the Android device.
- In Home Assistant, remove the relevant Mobile App integration entry. Remove duplicate entries if present.
- Restart Home Assistant.
- Log back into the Companion app. If you use Trusted Networks, sign in with credentials for this procedure rather than using Trusted Networks.

When to ask Home Assistant for help
If store-level checks or the relevant Android app recovery do not resolve the issue, use Home Assistant’s Companion Apps channel or forums for configuration advice. For a suspected software bug, Home Assistant lists platform-specific GitHub repositories.
