Most Halo Infinite Custom Game failures have a specific cause: the host lobby is not actually running, the session is hidden by its privacy or capacity settings, a known Browser join bug has occurred, or Halo’s online services are unavailable. Identify where the process stops, then use the matching fix instead of reinstalling or changing unrelated settings.
This guide covers hosting, finding and joining Custom Game Browser sessions, PC launch failures, LAN games, and service or connection errors.
First identify where the failure occurs
“Custom Game won’t load” can describe several different events. A host lobby that will not start needs a different remedy from a Browser session that is absent, and neither is automatically a game-installation problem.

| What you see | What it usually indicates | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Halo Infinite itself does not launch | A platform or installation issue, such as a missing Easy Anti-Cheat component on PC | Use the platform-specific launch checks in this guide |
| You press Play in a host lobby and nothing starts | A stale player or lobby state, especially after removing someone and editing a saved variant | Recreate the lobby; the removed player may need to relaunch |
| You cannot find a friend’s game in the Custom Game Browser | The game may be waiting, private, full, or no longer listed | Check privacy, whether the match has started, capacity, and Browser filters |
| A Browser join produces a black screen or a frozen view with little HUD | A documented Fireteam/session-join issue | Leave the Fireteam from the Social menu and join a different session |
| The game reports a dedicated-server, multiplayer, or lobby-service error | An outage or local connectivity problem | Check platform service status and your network before submitting a ticket |
| A community map starts with the wrong map selected | The lobby was opened in the wrong order before selecting the community file | Open the Custom Game lobby first, then select the community map |
The steps below follow those branches in order.
Understand how the Custom Game Browser works
Halo Support describes the Custom Game Browser as a list of Custom Games that are currently active and immediately joinable. It is not a queue that reserves a place in a lobby that has not started. Joining a listed game places you in that session’s Fireteam and then loads you into the match already in progress. Forge maps and modes can be used in Browser sessions.

This explains many apparently missing games. A host can be sitting in an Open lobby, but until the host chooses a map and mode and presses Play, there is no active match for the Browser to list.
Conditions required for Browser visibility
- The host must set the lobby privacy to Open.
- The host must select a map and mode and press Play so the match is in progress.
- The session must have an available place. Full sessions are omitted from the Browser.
- Friends Only and Invite Only lobbies are not Browser-listed.
- After changing Browser filters or waiting for a newly created game, refresh the Browser.
Custom Games and the Browser support up to 24 players and four Observers per session, according to Halo Support. That capacity is a visibility rule as well as a gameplay limit: a full session will not appear as a joinable result.
Make a host lobby appear in the Browser
If your friend cannot find your game, set up the session in this order:
- Open Play, choose Custom Game, and open Lobby Options.
- Set Privacy to Open. Do not use Friends Only or Invite Only if Browser discovery is required.
- Choose the map and mode, including a Forge map or mode if that is what you intend to run.
- Press Play to start the match. Merely waiting in the lobby does not publish it to the Browser.
- Ask the joining player to refresh the Browser after the match is active and to clear filters that could hide it.
If the lobby is already full, one player must leave before another person can join. If players leave a game that was previously full and the session still does not return to the Browser, end the current Custom Game and start a new one; this is the documented host workaround for that state.
Fix a lobby that will not start after removing a player
Halo Support lists a specific sequence that can leave a Custom Games lobby unable to start. Players return to the lobby after a match, the host loads a saved variant and changes match options, and a removed player can still appear in the lobby interface. Pressing Play then fails to launch the next game.
Documented workaround
- End or leave the affected Custom Games lobby.
- Create a new Custom Game lobby rather than continuing to edit the stale one.
- Re-add only the players who should be in the new session.
- If the removed player is still affected, have that player close and relaunch Halo Infinite before trying again.
This is a lobby-state problem, not evidence that the selected map or your entire installation is broken. Reinstalling the game is not the listed remedy for this sequence.
Fix a black screen or stationary view after joining
A Browser join can occasionally load into a black screen or a stationary map view with most of the HUD missing. Retrying the same session can reproduce the problem.

Use the session-change workaround
- Pause the game.
- Open Social.
- Choose Leave Fireteam.
- Return to the Custom Game Browser and join a different active session.
The workaround changes the session rather than repeatedly reconnecting to the same faulty join state. If the replacement session works, the original Browser entry or its current Fireteam state was the likely trigger.
Correct a map or mode that changes unexpectedly
Halo Support documents a community-file ordering issue. If you launch Halo Infinite, go straight to Community, and start a Custom Game from a map file there, the lobby can open with a different map selected.
To avoid that sequence, open the Custom Game lobby immediately after launching the game, before selecting the community-made map file. Then choose the intended map and mode from inside the lobby and verify the selection before pressing Play.
Handle LAN-specific Custom Game problems
LAN sessions have their own entries in Halo’s Known Issues list. A rare connection error or a team roster that disappears while loading can be addressed by closing and relaunching Halo Infinite.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The same list identifies a separate map behavior: selecting the LAN server option on Argyle or Detachment can remove all players and Observers when the map loads. If your symptom matches that exact map-and-LAN combination, change the map or server setup rather than treating it as a general Browser outage. For any other LAN failure, record the map, server option, player count, and exact message before reporting it.
When Halo Infinite will not launch on PC
Do not apply PC launch fixes to a game that launches normally but cannot join a Custom Game. The Known Issues list describes two narrow installation or security cases.
Easy Anti-Cheat is missing
If Halo Infinite reports or behaves as though Easy Anti-Cheat is not installed, the official steps depend on where the game was installed:
- Steam: use Steam’s Verify integrity of game files command for Halo Infinite. This can restore a missing or damaged component.
- Microsoft Store or Xbox app on PC: uninstall and reinstall Halo Infinite so the Easy Anti-Cheat installation process is triggered again.
These instructions apply to the documented missing-component condition. They are not a reason to reinstall after every Custom Game Browser error.

Comodo blocks a Microsoft Store or Xbox app installation
Halo Support also lists a case in which Comodo Antivirus blocks Halo Infinite installed through the Microsoft Store or Xbox app. Add Halo Infinite to Comodo’s Excluded Applications list, following the security product’s own interface. Do this only when that installation and antivirus combination matches your symptom; do not disable security protection indiscriminately.
Forge Oasis crash on Steam
A separate PC issue concerns a crash while loading the Forge map Oasis through Steam. The documented workaround is to start and leave another Forge map, then start Oasis. This is a specific Forge crash path, not a universal fix for Custom Games that remain at a loading screen.
Recognize service and connectivity failures
Some failures originate outside the lobby configuration. Halo Support names these symptoms as possible service or connectivity indicators:
Rank #3
- Software Main Type: Game
- Software Sub Type: First Person Shooter
- Software Name: Halo Infinite Standard Edition
- ESRB Rating: Rating Pending
- Single Player Supported: Yes
- “Error: There was a problem with the Dedicated Server. Please try again.”
- “Error: Multiplayer Is Unavailable. Please Try Again Later.”
- “Error: Unable to connect to the Halo Infinite Lobby Service.”
- The menu shows Offline or Transitioning.
- The Battle Pass or in-game menus fail to load.
Broader Xbox or Steam outages can affect Halo even when your home network is working. A dated troubleshooting page cannot establish whether services are up at this moment, so check current platform-service notices and Halo’s current outage updates when these messages appear.
Run a focused service and network check
- Note the exact error text and whether the menu reports Offline or Transitioning.
- Check the service status for the platform you use: Xbox, Windows/Microsoft Store, or Steam.
- Test your home connection with another online service or game. If other services also fail, resolve the local connection problem first.
- Retry Halo Infinite after the platform and home network are functioning normally.
- If the same message persists with services available, submit a Halo Support ticket and include the exact wording, platform, installation type, map or mode, and the steps that led to the failure.
A service error should not be “fixed” by repeatedly recreating lobbies. Conversely, a single missing Browser session with no service error is more likely to be explained by privacy, match state, capacity, or a stale session.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use the Multiplayer Known Issues list intelligently
Halo Support’s Multiplayer Known Issues page was marked Updated: November 18, 2025. It is a snapshot of documented conditions, not a guarantee that every item still exists in October 2026. Check the current page for changes before assuming that an old workaround remains necessary.
Match the listed issue to your exact symptom, platform, map, and mode. The page also contains Mode Editor and settings problems in which options revert or fail to apply. Those entries may explain a setting that changes back, but they are not general remedies for every loading failure.
What a past update does—and does not—prove
Halo’s December Mid-Season Update Preview described Browser changes intended to address joins blocked by backend changes while sessions remained open, unclear messages when joining full sessions, missing errors when a selected session was no longer active, and Fireteam-joining improvements. Those are historical release-note facts. They do not establish that the same bugs remain active or that the service is currently impaired.
Likewise, a player report using the phrase “loading map… 0%” followed by a network error is useful search language but is only an anecdotal account. It does not establish how common the symptom is or identify a universal fix.
When to report the problem
Submit a Halo Support bug report when the failure is not covered by the current Known Issues list or when the documented workaround does not help. Include enough detail for the support team to distinguish a host-state problem from a service or installation failure.
- The complete error message, copied exactly.
- Whether you were launching Halo, hosting, browsing, or joining.
- Platform and installation source: Xbox, Steam, Microsoft Store, or Xbox app on PC.
- Online or LAN session, plus the map and mode.
- Lobby privacy setting, whether the match was waiting or in progress, and whether it was full.
- The sequence immediately before the failure, such as removing a player, loading a saved variant, changing options, or selecting a Community file.
- What happened after recreating the lobby, relaunching, leaving the Fireteam, or joining another session.
That information is more useful than a report that only says “Custom Games do not work.”
Quick Recap
A short decision path
- Game will not open: check the Easy Anti-Cheat or Comodo-specific PC cases, and the Forge Oasis case if that is the exact crash.
- Host cannot start: recreate the lobby, especially after removing a player and editing a saved variant; have the removed player relaunch.
- Friend cannot find the game: set Privacy to Open, start the match with Play, confirm it is not full, and refresh the Browser.
- Previously full session disappeared: end the Custom Game and start a new one.
- Black or HUD-less join: pause, open Social, leave the Fireteam, and join a different session.
- Wrong community map: open the Custom Game lobby before selecting the community file.
- LAN roster or connection issue: relaunch; avoid the documented Argyle or Detachment LAN behavior by changing the map or setup.
- Dedicated-server, multiplayer, lobby-service, Offline, or menu-loading error: check platform and home-network status, then report the exact persistent error.
