When GTA V mods crash on startup, freeze at the loading screen, fail to appear, or stop working after an update, troubleshoot from the outside in: identify your edition and build, establish whether the unmodified game works, verify loader and mod compatibility, then disable and restore third-party files one at a time. For add-on vehicles or similar content, check a gameconfig.xml release that matches your installed build. If the vanilla game also fails, switch to Rockstar’s general PC troubleshooting rather than treating the problem as a mod conflict.

Start with the failure you can observe

Do not begin by deleting every mod. The stage at which GTA V fails narrows the likely cause and prevents you from applying a fix meant for a different edition or installation.

Observed symptom First checks Most useful next action
Crash immediately after launching Game edition and executable build; Script Hook V support; loader and prerequisite files Test a clean or disabled mod setup, then restore ASI and script files individually
Freeze or crash while story mode loads Recently added scripts, ASI plugins, add-on content, and gameconfig.xml Remove the latest additions and test; investigate a version-matched gameconfig when add-on content is installed
Game opens but a mod does not appear Required runtime, dependencies, file location, and the mod’s supported edition Follow that mod’s current installation instructions and confirm that its loader is actually running
Mods worked until a game update New GTA V build versus Script Hook V and every dependent mod Use releases that explicitly support the new build, or wait for compatibility updates
Only GTA Online is affected BattlEye status and Rockstar’s Online requirements Use the official Online path; do not try to bypass anti-cheat with a modded setup
Unmodified GTA V also crashes Patch level, drivers, verified files, DirectX and C++ components Follow Rockstar’s general PC troubleshooting before reintroducing mods

Record the exact wording of any error and whether the failure occurs before the main menu, while loading Story Mode, immediately after entering the world, or only when a particular vehicle or script is used. A crash on startup and a missing in-game feature can have completely different causes.

Identify the exact GTA V installation

GTA V now exists in more than one PC edition. Treat Legacy and Enhanced as separate compatibility targets, even when a mod’s name appears identical. Write down the edition, the game build shown by your launcher or executable, and the date of the last game update. Script Hook V releases are edition- and build-dependent; advice for one executable should not be assumed to apply to the other.

Make a small troubleshooting record

  • Edition: Legacy or Enhanced.
  • Game build or version shown by the launcher or executable.
  • Failure stage: launch, loading screen, Story Mode, in-game, or a specific mod action.
  • Exact error text, if any.
  • Last change: GTA V update, Script Hook V update, new ASI plugin, script, vehicle, map, or configuration file.
  • Whether the unmodified game starts successfully.

Keep this record beside your mod files. It stops you from repeatedly changing several variables and forgetting which combination produced a result.

Establish a clean baseline before changing more files

A baseline answers the most important question: is GTA V itself healthy, or is the mod stack causing the failure? Make a backup of important files first. Do not alter the only copy of a configuration file or replace original game files without a way to restore them.

  1. Disable the mod setup temporarily. Use your backup or the method recommended by the relevant mod manager or maintainer. The goal is to run the game without third-party ASI plugins, scripts, and add-on content, not to erase evidence.
  2. Launch the same game mode that failed. If the original problem was a Story Mode loading crash, test Story Mode rather than only checking whether the launcher opens.
  3. Repeat once if the result is unclear. A one-time successful launch does not prove a fix; note whether the failure is consistent.
  4. Classify the result. A clean game that works points toward compatibility, placement, dependencies, or a conflicting mod. A clean game that still fails requires general PC troubleshooting.

If the vanilla installation fails, Rockstar Games Customer Support’s general PC guidance covers updating to the latest patch, updating graphics drivers, verifying game files, and checking DirectX and Microsoft C++ requirements. Those steps address a general game problem; they do not prove that a particular mod or loader is compatible.

Check compatibility after every GTA V update

A previously stable mod stack can stop working as soon as the game executable changes. Start with the current Script Hook V release for your edition and build. Its maintainer identifies supported game versions and indicates when a build is not yet recognized. If your installed build is unsupported, waiting for a compatible release is safer than layering unrelated fixes on top of it.

Verify each dependency, not just the main mod

Compatibility is a chain. A vehicle pack may depend on a loader, a script runtime, a library, a specific gameconfig.xml, and other files. Check the main mod’s current instructions and changelog, then check every dependency separately. A compatible Script Hook V release does not automatically make an older script or ASI plugin compatible.

  • Includes the complete grand Theft Auto V story experience
Item to compare What to verify Why it matters
Game edition Legacy or Enhanced Files built for one edition may not load in the other
Executable build Exact build supported by the loader and mod An update can change interfaces used by scripts and ASI plugins
Maintainer release Release date and stated compatibility A newer-looking file is not useful if it targets a different build
Prerequisites ASI loader, script runtime, libraries, and any required settings Missing prerequisites can make a mod appear absent or crash at launch
Content type Script, ASI plugin, replacement, or add-on content Each type can have different installation and memory requirements
Configuration Whether a version-specific gameconfig.xml is required Add-on content can exceed default memory-pool limits

Do not quote or rely on a build number copied from an old guide. Check the current release information at the time you troubleshoot, because support changes as Rockstar updates the executable.

Confirm the loader, runtime, and file placement

A loader problem often looks exactly like a broken mod. The game may start but show no new feature, or it may crash before a script can display an error. Confirm that the loader or runtime required by the specific mod is installed and that every file is in the location named by the mod’s current instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the mod’s instructions as the authority

Generic installation guides can be useful for understanding common Script Hook V and ASI arrangements, but older guides may not reflect changes between Legacy and Enhanced. The mod’s maintainer should define the supported edition, required files, folder location, and load order. If those instructions conflict with a generic guide, follow the current maintainer instructions for the matching edition.

  • Check that the required ASI loader is present and intended for your edition and build.
  • Check that the script runtime or library named by the mod is installed.
  • Confirm that prerequisite files were not left in a download folder or placed in a different GTA V installation.
  • Remove duplicate copies of a loader or library that could be loaded from an unintended location.
  • Read the mod’s changelog for renamed files, removed dependencies, and edition-specific notes.

Install one dependency at a time when possible. Launch after each change so you know which prerequisite altered the result.

Isolate third-party files instead of reinstalling everything

When the clean game works, use controlled elimination. Temporarily disable the most recently added ASI plugins, scripts, and add-on files, then test. Restore one item or one clearly defined group at a time. Keep a short log with the file name, test result, and observed failure stage.

  1. Start with the latest change. Remove or disable the newest mod, update, or configuration edit. This is a useful first hypothesis, not proof that the newest file is defective.
  2. Test the same scenario. Reproduce the startup, loading-screen, or in-game action that originally failed.
  3. Restore one item. If the game works, add back a single ASI plugin, script, vehicle pack, or map rather than an entire archive of changes.
  4. Record the boundary. The first restoration after which the crash returns identifies a suspect set.
  5. Split a large set. If many files were added together, divide them into smaller groups and test each group, then narrow the failing group to individual files.

This process of elimination is a community-supported diagnostic method. It can reveal a conflict, but it does not prove that the last-installed file is intrinsically at fault; the interaction may involve a dependency, load order, or changed game build.

Separate file types during testing

Test ASI plugins, script files, and add-on content in separate passes. A script may require a runtime that an ASI plugin does not, while an add-on vehicle can expose a configuration limit only after the game loads a save. Keeping categories separate makes the first failing change easier to identify.

Investigate gameconfig.xml only when add-on content points there

Gameconfig changes are most relevant when the setup adds vehicles or other add-on content. The gameconfig maintainer explains that add-on mods typically require modified memory-pool limits and provides version-specific releases. Use a release that matches the installed game build and follow its instructions exactly.

When a gameconfig is a reasonable suspect

  • The unmodified game and a minimal script setup work.
  • The crash begins after adding several vehicles, maps, or other add-on assets.
  • The configuration file came from a different GTA V build or an old guide.
  • The maintainer of the add-on explicitly lists a compatible gameconfig.

When not to change limits blindly

Do not assume every installation needs every adjuster, and do not increase limits arbitrarily. A larger value is not automatically safer. An incorrect or mismatched configuration can create new instability, so retain the original file, make one controlled change, and revert if the symptom worsens.

Compare candidate configurations on six points: Legacy versus Enhanced support, exact GTA V build, maintainer and release date, stated prerequisites, whether the setup actually adds content that needs altered pools, and whether the advice is official Rockstar guidance or community advice. A claimed ceiling for the number of cars is not a substitute for build compatibility and documented instructions.

Branch the diagnosis by symptom

Crash on startup

Begin with a clean launch, then check Script Hook V support for the exact executable. If the loader is unsupported after an update, remove dependent ASI and script files until a compatible release is available. If the loader is supported, restore files individually and check for duplicate or misplaced prerequisites.

Crash or freeze on the loading screen

Loading-screen failures often appear after adding scripts, vehicles, maps, or a configuration file. Disable the latest additions, test the same save, and restore items one at a time. If only add-on content triggers the failure, verify that gameconfig.xml matches the installed build before changing other limits.

Mod does not appear in Story Mode

Confirm that the game reaches Story Mode without the mod, then check the mod’s required runtime, dependencies, file location, and supported edition. A missing feature is not evidence that the game crashed; it may indicate that the loader never reached the file or that the mod is incompatible with the current build.

Failure begins after entering a save

Test a new or known-good save with the same mod set. If only one save fails, the save may reference content that has been removed or changed. Restore the mod files needed by that save one at a time and keep a backup before experimenting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Crash after adding vehicles or maps

Remove the newest add-on first. If a minimal add-on set works but the full set does not, use a version-matched gameconfig release recommended by the maintainer, then add content back in small groups. Do not treat a memory-pool adjustment as a universal fix for script or loader incompatibility.

Keep GTA Online separate from mod troubleshooting

Use modded files in the intended offline or single-player environment. Rockstar states: "Launching GTA Online without BattlEye will not allow the game to connect to official GTA Online servers." Rockstar also explains that mods are disabled during gameplay when BattlEye is running.

If the issue occurs only when connecting to Online, follow Rockstar’s current BattlEye and Online instructions rather than trying to bypass anti-cheat. Do not advise or attempt to load a modded setup into official Online servers. A configuration that works in Story Mode is not evidence that it is permitted or supported in Online.

Use Rockstar’s general PC troubleshooting when vanilla GTA V fails

Once third-party files are disabled, broaden the diagnosis if the game still crashes. Rockstar’s general PC guidance includes these checks:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Update GTA V to the latest available patch for your edition.
  2. Install current graphics drivers appropriate for your hardware.
  3. Verify the game files using the launcher’s file-verification function.
  4. Check DirectX components and Microsoft C++ requirements listed by Rockstar.
  5. Restart and retest the unmodified game before restoring any mod files.

These steps can repair a damaged or incomplete game installation, but they do not establish mod compatibility. After the vanilla game is stable, reintroduce the loader and mods in the controlled order described above.

A safe rollback and restoration workflow

Use a reversible workflow so each test leaves you with a known state.

  1. Back up original files. Keep copies of configuration files and any files you intend to replace.
  2. Label test sets. For example, maintain a clean baseline, a loader-only set, and a small tested mod set. The labels matter more than the names; you need to know exactly what each set contains.
  3. Change one variable. Do not update the game, replace the loader, install a vehicle pack, and edit gameconfig.xml in one session.
  4. Reproduce consistently. Use the same launch path, save, and in-game action for each comparison.
  5. Keep the first working state. Once a combination works, copy or document it before trying another change.
  6. Restore by reversal. If a new change causes a failure, return to the last working set rather than stacking another fix on top.

If a mod has its own log or error file, preserve it before deleting or replacing files. Include the edition, build, failure stage, and last known working combination when asking the maintainer or community for help.

Common troubleshooting mistakes

  • Using a guide for the wrong edition. Legacy and Enhanced are separate compatibility targets.
  • Assuming a loader update fixes every dependent mod. Each script, ASI plugin, and library still needs its own compatibility check.
  • Changing gameconfig.xml first. Configuration changes are mainly indicated by add-on content; they cannot replace a missing runtime or unsupported loader.
  • Installing several fixes at once. You lose the ability to identify which change helped or caused the crash.
  • Testing only the launcher. A game can launch successfully and still fail while loading Story Mode or a particular save.
  • Deleting files without backups. You may create a second problem and lose the known-good state.
  • Using modded files for Online troubleshooting. Online has separate BattlEye requirements and policies.
  • Trusting an old build number. Check the current executable and current maintainer release instead of copying a version from an older article.

What a useful support report contains

If controlled testing does not identify the cause, provide maintainers or a support forum with a concise, reproducible report:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • GTA V edition and exact installed build.
  • Launcher and operating-system details when relevant.
  • Whether a clean game reaches Story Mode.
  • Script Hook V and other loader versions.
  • Every mod and prerequisite enabled in the failing test.
  • The precise failure stage and error text.
  • The last known working combination and the first change that reproduced the problem.
  • Whether add-on vehicles, maps, or other content and a custom gameconfig.xml are involved.

This information lets someone compare the failure with the correct release and avoids generic advice for another installation.
