If a Steam game stopped launching immediately after a Proton update, first determine whether only that title is affected, then test another Proton version while preserving logs. A single-game failure usually points toward a title-specific regression, game files, or that game’s prefix; simultaneous failures make a damaged Proton or Steam Linux Runtime installation, a library mount problem, or a graphics-driver change more likely. There is no universal fix, so use the scope of the failure and the logs to choose the next step.
Start with a reversible diagnosis
Do not delete prefixes, reinstall Steam, or change several launch options at once. Those actions can destroy useful evidence and make it impossible to tell which change mattered. Record the following before troubleshooting:
- The game’s name and Steam App ID.
- The Proton tool selected for that title, including its version number.
- Your Linux distribution and release, GPU model, and graphics-driver version.
- When the game last launched successfully and when the Proton update installed.
- The exact symptom: no window, an immediate return to the Play button, a black window, a crash, or a Steam error.
- Whether another Proton game launches normally.
A report from a user described games that “begin to launch and then just nothing.” That phrase is a useful description, but it is not a formal error category. The distinction between one failing title and several failing titles is more valuable than the wording of the symptom.

Test the scope
Launch a second, known-working Proton game without changing its settings. If it runs, begin with the affected title’s Proton version, files, prefix, and game-specific reports. If several unrelated Proton games stopped at about the same time, prioritize shared components and drivers instead of repeatedly changing one game’s prefix.

Try a different Proton version for the affected game
Use this as a comparison test, not as a permanent workaround chosen at random.
- Open Steam Library and right-click the game, then choose Properties.
- Open Compatibility and enable the option to force a specific compatibility tool if it is not already enabled.
- Select another installed Proton version. If the previously working version is still available, test it first.
- Close the dialog, launch the game, and record whether it reaches the menu.
- After each test, keep the game build, graphics settings, launch options, and hardware the same.
Valve’s rolling Proton changelog records both game-specific fixes and regressions. Check the title and the exact Proton versions involved rather than assuming that every update breaks every game. A version that fixes one title can expose a regression in another.
The changelog also notes that Steam may need to be restarted after downloading the first Proton 11-based update. Apply that advice when it matches your update; restarting Steam is not a general remedy for all launch failures.

Compare the results consistently

If an older Proton version restores launch while the newer one fails under identical conditions, report that game/version pairing. Do not describe it as proof that the newer Proton release is broken for all games.
Collect a Proton log before making destructive changes
Proton can write a per-game log that shows the launch command, environment, prefix setup, graphics initialization, and many early failures.

- Open the game’s Properties window and select General.
- Find Launch Options and enter exactly
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%. - Launch the game once and wait for the same failure to reproduce.
- Exit Steam or the game, then look in your home directory for
steam-<APPID>.log. - Save a copy of the log before changing the Proton version. Remove personal information before posting it publicly.
The documented default filename uses the game’s numeric App ID. If you need logs in another location, Proton supports the PROTON_LOG_DIR environment override. For example, set a directory together with logging in the launch-options field, then reproduce the failure; use a path your user account can write.
Read the log around the final failure rather than searching for one alarming line in isolation. Missing DLL messages, Vulkan initialization errors, prefix-creation failures, permission errors, and runtime-container messages lead to different branches below. A log is evidence, not a guarantee that the last line is the root cause.

Proton documents PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% as a way to use the OpenGL-based wined3d path instead of the Vulkan-based DXVK path for Direct3D 9, 10, and 11. Try it only when the log or a title-specific report points toward a Vulkan/DXVK initialization problem. Remove it after the test if it does not help.
This override is not a universal launch fix. It can reduce performance, change graphical behavior, or fail to help a game that uses another rendering path. Do not combine it with several undocumented variables while diagnosing the original failure.
When several Proton games fail, inspect shared components
Proton games rely on more than the game executable. Steam installs compatibility tools and, for many current Proton builds, a Steam Linux Runtime container. If several games fail together, an incomplete download, damaged tool files, or an unhealthy runtime can affect all of them.

In a Steam for Linux compatibility-tool issue, ValveSoftware project member kisak-valve wrote: “Most current era Proton builds run inside the Steam Linux Runtime 3.0 container environment, so if that’s unhealthy, then anything that uses it can’t run.” That comment describes the incident’s container dependency; it is not a guarantee about every Proton release or every runtime failure.
Verify the compatibility tool and runtime
- In the affected game’s Properties, open Compatibility and note the selected tool.
- Use Steam’s available verification or repair control for the installed Proton tool and relevant Steam Linux Runtime component. The exact label can vary by Steam client version.
- Allow the download or verification to finish, then restart Steam.
- Test one affected game and one other Proton game before changing per-game prefixes.
An issue investigated by Valve connected unsupported version 0 entries with damaged or incomplete tools and recommended verifying Proton/runtime files. Treat that as a diagnostic lead, not a universal interpretation of every occurrence of the message.
If normal verification is unavailable or leaves the same failure, do not jump immediately to incident-specific SteamCMD commands. A reported recovery used validation against particular runtime App IDs and a particular broken-download state; those identifiers and commands are not a general first-line procedure. Gather the logs and Steam Runtime Diagnostics first.
Capture Steam Linux Runtime diagnostics
When the log suggests a container or runtime problem, add the runtime diagnostic switch to the same game’s launch options:
STEAM_LINUX_RUNTIME_LOG=1 PROTON_LOG=1 %command%Reproduce the failure once. The runtime guide places these logs in the selected runtime installation’s var/ directory, with names such as slr-app*-*.log. The exact directory depends on which runtime Steam selected. Include the matching runtime log and Proton log when reporting the problem; a runtime log from a different attempt can point to the wrong component.

Remove the diagnostic variables after collecting the files if you want normal launches. Keep the original failed-run logs so that later tests can be compared against the same evidence.
Check the Steam library and filesystem
A shared failure can come from the library rather than Proton itself. Confirm that the library containing the game is mounted at the expected path, remains mounted across a reboot, and is readable and writable by the account running Steam. Check free space and ownership as well.
A Valve issue raised a non-Linux-native filesystem as a possible contributor in a case involving incomplete tools. This supports checking the mount and filesystem when the symptoms fit; it does not establish that every NTFS installation fails.
- If the game is on an external drive, reconnect it and confirm that Steam shows the library as available before launching.
- If the mount path changed, use Steam’s storage settings to remove the stale library entry and add the current path, taking care not to delete the installed files.
- Check that the Proton tool and runtime are installed on a healthy library, not only the game itself.
- Look for permission-denied messages in the Proton or runtime log and correct the mount ownership using your distribution’s documented method.
Do not infer a filesystem cause solely because the game is stored on a non-native filesystem. Use the mount check together with the scope of the failure and the log.
Check graphics drivers for newer or graphics-related failures
Driver problems become more plausible when newer games fail, Vulkan initialization errors appear, the window is black, or multiple titles fail after a system update. Valve’s Steam Play requirements note that some newer titles require recent graphics drivers.

- Identify the GPU vendor and exact driver in your distribution’s system information or hardware utility.
- Compare the installed version with the current driver guidance for your distribution and GPU vendor.
- Install updates through the distribution’s supported mechanism, then reboot if the driver instructions require it.
- Retest without adding Proton rendering overrides so that the driver result is clear.
Do not copy old Ubuntu package commands from a dated requirements page into another distribution, or assume that a package name is still current. Driver packaging and supported versions change; follow the current instructions for your release.

Each Proton game has a separate Windows-style prefix containing configuration and compatibility data. A damaged prefix can explain why one title fails while others work, but deleting it is not a harmless first step.
Before removing or renaming a prefix, determine where the game stores saves and settings. Some games use Steam Cloud, some store data in the prefix, and some use a separate Linux or game-directory location. The available evidence does not establish that deleting a prefix is safe for every title. Back up locally stored saves and configuration first, and prefer renaming the prefix as a reversible experiment when you understand the game’s data layout.

Otherwise a recreated prefix can hide the original error without fixing the underlying cause.
Use the failure pattern to choose the next branch

Prepare a useful support report
A report that includes only “the game stopped launching” leaves maintainers to ask for the basic diagnostic information. Include:
- Game title and Steam App ID.
- Selected Proton tool and version, plus the alternative version tested.
- Game build or update date if Steam displays it.
- Linux distribution and release, GPU, and graphics-driver version.
- Whether one game or several fail, and one comparison title that does or does not launch.
- The last known working launch and any recent Steam, Proton, kernel, driver, filesystem, or hardware change.
- Exact reproduction steps and the visible Steam or game error.
- The Proton log from
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%. - The matching runtime log from
STEAM_LINUX_RUNTIME_LOG=1 PROTON_LOG=1 %command%when a container issue is suspected. - Steam Runtime Diagnostics output when requested by the report template or a Valve project member.
Keep personal paths, usernames, network addresses, and account information private when sharing logs. State which launch options were active for each log so another person can reproduce the same test.
Changes to avoid while diagnosing
- Do not delete a prefix before checking for local saves and preserving the log.
- Do not change Proton version, driver, filesystem mount, and several environment variables in one attempt.
- Do not treat a title-specific changelog regression as evidence that all Proton games are affected.
- Do not copy dated distribution commands without checking current release documentation.
- Do not infer a failure rate from issue reports; there is no published statistic establishing how often Proton updates cause launch failures.
A compact recovery order
- Record the title, App ID, Proton version, hardware, driver, distribution, timing, and exact symptom.
- Test whether another Proton game launches.
- Restart Steam when the change involved the first Proton 11-based update, then retry.
- Test another available Proton version for the affected title with all other conditions unchanged.
- Enable
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%and save the resultingsteam-<APPID>.log. - If several games fail, verify Proton and Steam Linux Runtime files and inspect the library mount.
- If runtime evidence points there, collect
STEAM_LINUX_RUNTIME_LOG=1 PROTON_LOG=1 %command%output. - For newer-game or graphics symptoms, follow current distribution and GPU-vendor driver guidance.
- Only after preserving evidence, investigate game files or a backed-up, reversible prefix reset.
This order keeps the earliest tests low-risk and makes each result useful for the next decision. The appropriate fix may be a title-specific Proton rollback, a repaired shared runtime, a corrected library mount, or a current graphics driver—not the same remedy for every game.
