The reliable answer is in the XRP Ledger, not in a wallet’s first pop-up. Find the transaction hash, look up the transaction, and continue checking until the response includes validated: true. In that validated ledger, tesSUCCESS means the requested changes occurred. A validated tec... result means the transaction was applied but the requested action failed. A ter... result is provisional, so it can still be retried or change.
Do not send a second payment merely because a wallet says “pending,” times out, or shows an error. A delayed signed transaction can still be applied, and two transactions that use the same account sequence can conflict. Establish the first transaction’s final status, its expiration boundary, and its exact result code before deciding what to do next.
Use this decision path first
- Get the transaction hash. Open the sending wallet’s transaction details or history and copy the hash. If there is no hash, determine whether the wallet actually submitted the signed transaction before treating the attempt as a ledger event.
- Look up the hash and check validation. A response from an open or candidate ledger can change. Treat the result as final only when the lookup says
validated: true. - Read the exact result code and metadata. Do not stop at a wallet label such as “failed,” “queued,” or “successful.” The protocol code and metadata show whether the transaction entered a validated ledger and what it changed.
- Check
LastLedgerSequenceif the transaction is missing. If that ledger index has not been validated yet, the transaction may still land. If it has passed and the transaction is absent from that ledger and every earlier validated ledger, the transaction has immutably failed. - Correct the actual cause. Check destination address, destination tag, amount, fee, reserve-constrained spendable balance, account sequence, transaction construction, and selected network.
- Only then replace or resend. Use a new transaction only after you know whether the original is final, expired, or still capable of being applied.
What “pending” and “failed” mean on XRPL
A wallet submits a signed transaction to a server, but submission is not the same as final settlement. Servers can return a tentative result before consensus places the transaction in a validated ledger. The transaction can be reapplied, reordered, or rejected while it remains provisional.

XRPL documentation describes the certainty test this way: “The only way to know with certainty that a transaction finally succeeded is to check the status of the transaction until it is both in a validated ledger and has result code tesSUCCESS.” A wallet’s immediate response is therefore a useful lead, not proof of success or failure.

Validated, open and candidate ledgers
A validated ledger is part of the finalized ledger history. Its transaction results are the basis for deciding what happened. An open or candidate ledger is still being built; a transaction visible there can disappear or receive a different result before validation.
When checking a transaction, record both the result code and the validation flag. A tentative tesSUCCESS is not enough, and a tentative error is not necessarily final. Wait for the validated outcome or for the transaction’s expiration condition to be met.
Result-code classes and the action each requires

tesSUCCESS: success that is actually final
When tesSUCCESS appears in a validated ledger, the requested changes occurred. Check transaction metadata rather than relying only on a wallet balance refresh: metadata identifies the ledger effects and the validated ledger index.

A tec result is often misunderstood because the transaction did enter a validated ledger. The requested operation failed, but the network still charges the transaction cost and advances the sender’s sequence. Some tec results can alter bookkeeping even though the intended payment or offer did not complete.
Examples include tecDST_TAG_NEEDED, reserve-related or unfunded codes, tecPATH_DRY, and tecPATH_PARTIAL. The exact code determines the correction; do not infer the cause from the class alone.
ter...: provisional and potentially retryable
terQUEUED means the transaction was queued for a future ledger. terSUBMITTED means it was submitted but not yet applied. A server can retry these results, so continue monitoring the same hash and its expiration boundary.

tef... and tem...: not applied
tef results are not included in a ledger, but finality depends on the specific code. tefMAX_LEDGER, for example, relates to a transaction whose LastLedgerSequence has passed. A tem result points to malformed construction or supplied fields and requires correction before another submission.
Step-by-step troubleshooting procedure
1. Preserve the original transaction details
Copy the hash, destination address, amount, fee, account sequence, selected network, and any destination tag from the wallet’s transaction screen. Keep the original record even if the app later removes or re-labels it. Do not edit the original transaction in your notes: a single changed digit can describe a different payment.
2. Confirm that a hash really exists
A wallet can time out before it tells you whether submission completed. If there is a hash, the signed transaction can be investigated independently of the wallet interface. If there is no hash, first establish whether signing finished and whether the wallet sent the transaction to an XRPL server. A local “send” click without a hash does not prove that a network transaction exists.
3. Query the transaction and require validation
Use a transaction lookup or explorer that reports the ledger index, result code and validation state. Confirm validated: true. If the response is from an open or candidate ledger, wait and query again. Record the exact result, not just a translated wallet message, because “pending” can correspond to several protocol states.
4. Inspect metadata and ledger effects
For a validated result, read transaction metadata to see which ledger objects changed, whether the destination account received funds, and whether the sender’s sequence and balance changed. A validated tec can consume the fee even when the intended operation did not occur, so a balance decrease alone does not prove that the payment succeeded.
5. If absent, evaluate LastLedgerSequence
LastLedgerSequence is the transaction’s expiration boundary. Compare it with a server that has continuous ledger history:

- If the latest validated ledger is below that index, the transaction may still be included.
- If the boundary ledger has been validated, search that ledger and every earlier validated ledger for the transaction.
- If the boundary has passed and the transaction is absent from all of those ledgers, it has immutably failed. It cannot appear later under that transaction hash.
This check prevents two opposite mistakes: replacing a transaction while it can still land, and waiting indefinitely after it has definitely expired.
Fix the common validated failure branches
Missing destination tag: tecDST_TAG_NEEDED
Some destination addresses, especially hosted services, require a destination tag to route an incoming payment to the correct customer. If the validated result is tecDST_TAG_NEEDED, the payment omitted a required tag. Obtain the recipient’s current instructions and prepare a corrected payment with the exact tag. Do not guess a tag from an old deposit or a different account.
Reserve or unfunded errors
The XRP balance shown by a wallet is not necessarily the amount that can be sent. XRPL accounts must maintain a protocol-defined reserve, and ledger objects can add reserve requirements. A reserve-related or unfunded result means the attempted amount, fee and resulting account state could not be funded under those rules.
Recalculate spendable XRP after the account reserve and any object-creation requirement. Leave enough for the transaction fee as well. Reserve parameters can change, so use the current official XRPL reserve guidance rather than copying a hard-coded amount from an old article or wallet screenshot.
Path and partial-payment errors
tecPATH_DRY indicates that the requested path has no usable liquidity. tecPATH_PARTIAL indicates that the path could not deliver the required result under the transaction’s conditions. Inspect the transaction’s amount, asset, path and limit fields. Do not assume that retrying the identical transaction will create liquidity or change the outcome.
Malformed transaction: tem...
Check the transaction type and every required field, including address encoding, amount format, fee, sequence, destination tag and any fields specific to the operation. A malformed transaction is not applied to a ledger, so correcting construction is more useful than increasing the fee.

Maximum-ledger expiry: tefMAX_LEDGER
Compare the latest validated ledger index with LastLedgerSequence. Confirm that the transaction is absent from the boundary ledger and all earlier validated ledgers. Once those conditions hold, create a new transaction with a current sequence and an appropriate expiration boundary if the payment is still needed.

Why the fee can be lost on a failed payment
When a transaction is included in a validated ledger, its transaction cost is deducted whether the result is tesSUCCESS or a tec failure. A pre-relay insufficient-fee condition can appear as terINSUF_FEE_B. If a transaction has already been distributed and the sender’s balance then falls short, it can instead be included with tecINSUFF_FEE.
Check the fee in the actual signed transaction and compare it with the sender’s spendable balance, not merely the displayed total. A fee adjustment should be made only in a newly constructed transaction after the original status is known.
Sequence numbers and duplicate submissions
XRPL transactions from an account use sequence numbers. Two different signed transactions using the same sequence can conflict; one may be applied while the other becomes invalid or remains pending. That is why sending a replacement immediately after a timeout can create a second uncertainty instead of resolving the first one.
Read the account’s current sequence and the original transaction’s sequence before preparing a replacement. Do not manually reuse an old sequence unless the wallet or signing workflow explicitly handles sequence management and you have established that the original transaction cannot still be applied.
How long should a pending transaction take?
The XRPL Send XRP tutorial says most transactions are accepted into the next ledger version and that a final outcome may take about 4–7 seconds. It also notes that network load or poor connectivity can make confirmation take longer. Treat 4–7 seconds as typical tutorial guidance, not a guarantee, measured network-wide statistic or service-level promise.

After that interval, the correct action is not automatically “resend.” Query the hash, check validation, read the result class, and compare the current ledger with LastLedgerSequence. A terQUEUED or terSUBMITTED result can remain pending while the server retries it. An absent transaction whose expiration boundary has not passed can still be included.
When and how to replace a transaction
Replacement is appropriate only after the original transaction is resolved as a validated failure, a definitive expiration, or a submission that never produced a network transaction. Before creating one:
- Confirm the original hash’s validated result or prove that no signed transaction was submitted.
- Check whether the original transaction’s
LastLedgerSequencehas passed and the transaction is absent. - Read the account’s current sequence and available balance after reserve and fees.
- Recheck the destination address and any required destination tag with the recipient.
- Construct a new transaction rather than editing a signed blob whose sequence or expiration is stale.
If the original is still provisional, wait for its outcome instead of creating a competing transaction. A delayed original can be applied later, and the two transactions can contend for the same sequence.

Wallet timeout with no transaction found
Start by distinguishing a wallet-interface problem from a ledger problem. A timeout may mean the wallet lost its connection after submission, or it may mean signing or relay never completed. Look for a transaction hash in history, export logs or transaction details. If a hash exists, query it against a continuously updating ledger source and verify the selected network. If no hash exists, reconnect the wallet to the intended network, confirm that signing completed, and only then decide whether a new submission is necessary.
Exact menu names differ by wallet, so do not assume that a “retry” button creates a safe replacement. Treat any retry as a new transaction and apply the sequence, reserve, destination-tag and expiration checks above.
Preventive checklist before sending
- Verify that the wallet is connected to the intended XRPL network.
- Copy the destination address directly from trusted recipient instructions and check it before signing.
- Ask whether the destination requires a destination tag, and enter it exactly when required.
- Review the amount, fee, account sequence and expiration fields in the transaction details.
- Calculate spendable XRP after the account reserve, ledger-object requirements and transaction fee.
- Keep the transaction hash and record the time and network immediately after submission.
- Use a lookup that exposes
validated: true, the exact result code and metadata.
What a complete diagnosis should record
For support or your own audit trail, save the transaction hash, network, validated ledger index, validation flag, exact result code, metadata summary, account sequence, fee, destination tag status, LastLedgerSequence, and the latest validated ledger index at the time you checked. This set of facts separates a wallet display problem from a protocol result and makes it possible to explain whether funds moved, a fee was consumed, a sequence advanced, or the transaction expired without ledger inclusion.
