When an Excel tab, button, add-in, or command disappears, the cause may be licensing, platform or edition limits, an inactive add-in, an administrator policy, a workbook-specific condition, or a software conflict—not a damaged installation. Identify the exact symptom first, then check eligibility and account status before changing Excel or reinstalling Office.
Start by classifying the Excel problem
The fastest fix depends on what “missing” or “not working” means. Record the exact feature name and classify the symptom before changing settings:
- Ribbon tab or command missing: the feature may be unavailable for your platform, edition, plan, or organization.
- Add-in absent from a list: it may not be installed, may be incompatible with your Excel edition, or may be hidden by policy.
- Command visible but greyed out: the workbook, selection, editing mode, protection state, or administrator policy may make it unavailable.
- Feature opens but returns an error: the add-in, account entitlement, workbook content, or a current Microsoft issue may be involved.
- Excel freezes, crashes, or fails during startup: an add-in or startup file is a stronger suspect than a missing entitlement.
Also note whether the behavior affects one workbook or every workbook, and whether it occurs in Excel for Windows, Mac, the web, or a mobile app. Write down the product name, version and build, account type (personal or work/school), recent updates, error text, and the date the problem began. Those details determine which troubleshooting route applies.
Use this diagnostic order

Follow the checks in that order. It prevents an unnecessary reinstall when the command is simply unavailable in your edition or blocked by an administrator.

Confirm that the feature belongs to your Excel platform and edition
Excel does not expose an identical feature set everywhere. Windows desktop, Mac, web and mobile apps have different capabilities, and Microsoft 365 subscription plans do not all include the same tools. A missing command can therefore be expected behavior.
Example: Spreadsheet Inquire
Microsoft says Spreadsheet Inquire is available only in Excel for Windows with Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise plans and equivalent editions. If Inquire is not listed in the COM Add-ins dialog, the edition may exclude it, or an administrator may have made it unavailable. Installing Excel again will not add a feature that the license or policy does not provide.
Check the exact feature’s requirements
Search Microsoft’s documentation for the feature name and verify its supported platform, edition, subscription and release channel. Check whether the instructions apply to desktop Excel rather than Excel for the web. Do not assume that a command shown in a Windows tutorial should appear in a Mac or browser session.
If a command is present in one workbook but not another, platform eligibility is less likely. Compare workbook protection, file type, editing mode and selected cells before changing the installation.

Verify the signed-in account and subscription
Subscription features can disappear when Excel is signed in with a different account from the one that owns the Microsoft 365 subscription. This commonly affects features whose availability is tied to an active subscription rather than to the application binary alone.
- Open Excel and view the account information from the Office account area (the exact label can vary by release).
- Confirm the signed-in email address is the personal account that purchased the subscription, or the work/school account assigned by your organization.
- For a personal subscription, verify that the subscription is active under that account.
- For a work or school installation, open the organization’s subscription or license page if you have access. If the required license is not listed, contact the administrator who manages Microsoft 365 assignments.
- Close and restart Excel after correcting the account or license, then test the feature in a new workbook.
Microsoft’s subscription-feature guidance discusses visibility problems involving features such as Dictate, Designer and Editor. A license check is relevant to subscription-only features; it does not explain every missing ribbon command or workbook-specific error.
Install and enable Excel add-ins
Add-ins are optional components. A command or tab supplied by an add-in will not appear merely because Excel is installed.
Regular Excel add-ins
- Open Excel and select Home > Add-ins.
- Open My Add-ins and look for the required add-in.
- If it is not installed, use the available add-in store or installation option to add it.
- Select the add-in to activate it, then follow any sign-in or permission prompts.
- Close and reopen the workbook, and check whether the expected command or tab appears.
The labels and available add-ins can differ by platform and organization. If the add-in store or an installation button is missing, continue to the policy and licensing checks rather than trying to bypass the restriction.

Windows COM add-ins
- Select File > Options > Add-ins.
- At the bottom of the dialog, choose COM Add-ins in the Manage box.
- Select Go.
- Check the required add-in entry and select OK.
- Restart Excel and test the feature.
If the entry is listed but unchecked, activation may restore the missing command. If it is absent entirely, the add-in may not be installed, may be incompatible with the edition, or may be removed or hidden by an administrator.
Recognize administrator restrictions
A work or school computer can intentionally block Excel features. Microsoft lists security and compliance requirements, restrictions on unapproved or insecure tools, and feature deprecation as possible reasons. A policy can prevent an add-in from being installed, remove a command from the interface, or block an action even when the software itself is functioning normally.
If Excel displays an organization-restriction message, treat it as a policy decision until IT confirms otherwise. Microsoft describes this situation as: “This is not an error on your part. The feature is working as expected, but your organization has chosen to restrict it.”

- Capture the exact message and the feature name.
- Ask your internal help desk or Microsoft 365 administrator whether the feature is allowed for your account and device.
- Provide the business reason for needing it if an access request is required.
- Do not edit the registry, install an unapproved add-in, or use a workaround intended to defeat company controls.
Separate a workbook problem from an Excel-wide problem
A command that fails in one file may be responding to workbook state rather than to a broken Excel installation. Test the same action in a blank workbook and, if possible, a second file. Compare these conditions:

- Is the workbook protected or opened read-only?
- Is the file in a format that does not support the feature?
- Are you editing a cell, chart, object or formula when the command is disabled?
- Does the issue occur only with a macro-enabled file or a file from a particular source?
- Does the command work after saving a copy under a current Excel workbook format?
If the feature works in a blank workbook but not in one file, preserve the original, test a copy, and investigate protection, file format, embedded objects and workbook-specific add-in content before repairing Office.
Troubleshoot freezes, crashes and startup conflicts in Windows Excel
Safe Mode is intended for hangs, launch failures and behavior caused by add-ins or startup customizations. It is not the first remedy for a command that is simply absent from an edition.
Launch Excel in Safe Mode
- Close all Excel windows.
- Open the Windows Run dialog.
- Enter
Excel /safeand press Enter. - Open the affected workbook or create a blank one and reproduce the problem.
Safe Mode bypasses add-ins and some startup customizations. If Excel behaves normally there, a loaded component or startup file is a likely cause. If it still fails in Safe Mode, continue with licensing, workbook, update and support checks rather than assuming an add-in is responsible.

- Close Safe Mode and start Excel normally.
- Open File > Options > Add-ins.
- Use the Manage box to inspect COM add-ins and other installed add-in categories.
- Disable the add-ins, restart Excel, and test again.
- Re-enable one add-in, restart Excel, and test. Repeat one at a time until the failure returns.
- Leave the conflicting component disabled and contact its publisher or your administrator for a compatible version.
Restarting after each change matters because many add-ins load only during startup.

Inspect startup folders
Excel can automatically open files from its XLStart folder or from an alternate startup folder. A damaged workbook, template or add-in in either location can cause a freeze or unexpected changes at launch. Temporarily move suspected files to a backup location, start Excel again, and restore them individually to identify the trigger. Do not delete the originals until the cause is confirmed.
Use the automated troubleshooter cautiously
Microsoft’s automated troubleshooting option can disable add-ins, move startup files and rename toolbar files. It may also change registry settings. Back up the registry and startup files first, and make sure you understand how to restore them. Use this tool for persistent Windows startup or freezing problems, not as a routine response to a missing command.

After eligibility, account, add-in and policy checks, install applicable Office and Windows updates. A build-specific defect can make a feature fail even when it is correctly licensed and enabled.

Then consult Microsoft’s Excel for Windows known-issues page for a symptom that matches your version and environment. The page was last updated in September 2026 and uses statuses including FIXED, WORKAROUND, INVESTIGATING and BY DESIGN. Statuses and affected builds can change, so read the live entry before applying a workaround. Confirm that the entry actually covers your platform, release channel and symptom; a workaround for one add-in or build may not apply to another.
Choose the right escalation path
Contact organizational IT for a managed work or school device, especially when a license, add-in or policy is involved. Use Microsoft support for an unmanaged installation or when the documented checks do not resolve the problem. Microsoft’s support index separates routes for activation or disabled features, freezing, printing, missing worksheet tabs and editing issues, so select the route that matches the symptom.
Include the following information in the request:
- The exact feature, tab, button or add-in name.
- Excel platform, product edition, version and build.
- Whether the account is personal or work/school, and the relevant subscription or license type.
- Whether the feature appears in Home > Add-ins or the COM Add-ins list.
- The workbook file type and whether the issue affects one file or every file.
- Recent Office or Windows updates, newly installed add-ins and the full error text.
- Whether the behavior reproduces in Windows Safe Mode.
- Any organization-restriction message or administrator response.
This information lets support distinguish an entitlement issue from a configuration conflict or a current product defect without repeating the same basic checks.

What not to do
- Do not reinstall Office before confirming that the feature is included in your edition.
- Do not assume a Windows-only feature should appear on Mac, the web or mobile.
- Do not repeatedly toggle settings while Excel is running; restart when testing add-ins.
- Do not apply a known-issue workaround without checking its affected build and current status.
- Do not modify the registry or managed settings without a backup and a clear recovery plan.
- Do not bypass an organization’s security or compliance controls.
When the feature is still missing
At this point, the remaining possibilities are usually a feature that your plan or platform does not support, an administrator-controlled limitation, a subscription or sign-in mismatch, an uninstalled or incompatible add-in, a workbook-specific condition, or a defect in the current build. Give support the diagnostic details above, including the Safe Mode result and the exact location where the feature is or is not listed. That evidence is more useful than a generic report that “Excel is broken.”
