Amazon EventBridge failures occur at two different stages: a rule may not match the event on its event bus, or it may match and then fail to deliver the event to its target. Diagnose those stages separately. First verify the bus, Region, rule state, pattern, and target; then prove matching with the actual event JSON; finally use metrics, permissions, target health, retries, and dead-letter-queue (DLQ) evidence to find delivery failures.

This sequence applies to rules that appear not to trigger, rules that do not invoke Lambda, and rules whose events arrive late or never reach a downstream service. Scheduled rules require a separate expression-and-time check.

1. Establish what failed: matching or delivery

A rule routes an event only after the event satisfies its pattern on a particular event bus. A successful match increments rule activity and starts target invocation; it does not guarantee that the target accepted the request. AWS summarizes the first stage plainly: “An event pattern either matches an event or it doesn’t.” (Amazon EventBridge event patterns)

Evidence What it tells you Next check
No TriggeredRules activity The event may not have matched, may be on another bus or Region, or metrics may not have appeared yet. Compare the real event with the pattern and verify source, bus, Region, and rule state.
TriggeredRules rises but no successful target activity The rule matched; invocation or delivery is failing. Inspect Invocations, FailedInvocations, permissions, target health, retries, and DLQ metrics.
Retries or DLQ messages EventBridge attempted delivery but encountered transient or permanent errors. Read DLQ metadata and correct the target, authorization, or capacity problem.
No event-processing log Not proof that the source failed. Unmatched AWS events are discarded without event-processing logs. Use source metrics and a pattern test instead of relying on log absence.

CloudWatch metrics can be delayed. Use an observation window that includes the time the source emitted the event, not only the moment you opened the console. AWS documents the overall troubleshooting flow in Troubleshooting Amazon EventBridge.

2. Verify the rule, bus, Region, and target before testing JSON

  1. Open the EventBridge console and select the event bus that should receive the event. A rule on the default bus does not see events sent to a custom or partner bus unless they are routed there.
  2. Confirm the rule is enabled, not disabled, and that its event pattern is the intended current version. Newly created or modified rules and targets can take a short time to propagate; wait briefly and send a fresh test event before treating a recent change as broken.
  3. Check the rule’s Targets tab. Confirm that the target still exists, its ARN is complete, and its account and Region are the intended ones. A deleted function, queue, topic, or bus can leave a stale configuration.
  4. Verify the source event is actually being emitted and arrives on that bus. Inspect the producer’s logs or service metrics, and ensure the event is not being sent to a different account or Region.
  5. For events from AWS global services such as IAM or Route 53, check the Region carefully. AWS states that global-service events are available in US East (N. Virginia); a rule in another Region will not match those events unless you route them there.

Rules are defined on event buses and can be scheduled or event-pattern based; the distinction and rule behavior are described in Rules in Amazon EventBridge.

3. Prove or disprove a pattern match with the exact event

Use a real payload, not an approximation

Copy the complete event JSON captured at the source or from an event archive. Compare it with the rule field by field: source, detail-type, account, region, resources, and every nested key under detail. Event patterns follow the event’s structure, so a key at detail.state is not equivalent to a top-level state. Case, spelling, array structure, and value types matter.

Test in the EventBridge Sandbox or with the API

In the EventBridge console, open the event-pattern testing area (Sandbox), paste the rule pattern and the actual event, and run the test. For automation, call the EventBridge TestEventPattern API with the same two JSON documents. A negative result means you should fix the pattern or the event route before investigating permissions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not “simplify” ARNs while testing. EventBridge treats : and / as different characters in ARN matching. A pattern containing an ARN with the wrong separator will not match even when the resource appears to be the same. AWS also notes that some CloudTrail API-call events omit the resources field; a pattern requiring that field cannot match those events. See Amazon EventBridge event patterns for matching syntax and edge cases.

Check pattern changes and propagation

If the test succeeds but live events still do not trigger the rule, wait for a recent pattern update to propagate, then emit a new event. Test with an event generated after the update; an old event in a log is not evidence that the current rule saw it.

4. Use rule and delivery metrics to locate the break

Open CloudWatch metrics for the rule and select a time range that covers event emission, propagation, retries, and the expected delivery period. Review the dimensions for the correct account, Region, event bus, rule, and target.

Metric Diagnostic meaning
TriggeredRules Rules that matched events. A flat line points toward routing or pattern problems, subject to metric delay.
Invocations Target invocation activity after matches.
FailedInvocations Invocations that failed; correlate spikes with target errors and permissions.
InvocationAttempts Total delivery attempts, including retries.
SuccessfulInvocationAttempts Attempts accepted successfully by the target.
RetryInvocationAttempts Attempts made after an earlier delivery failure.
IngestionToInvocationSuccessLatency Delay between event ingestion and successful target invocation.
InvocationsSentToDlq Events moved to a configured DLQ after delivery could not be completed.

These metrics and their interpretation are covered in Best practices for monitoring event delivery in Amazon EventBridge and Monitoring Amazon EventBridge. A match with zero invocation attempts suggests a configuration or target-state issue; attempts with failures move the investigation to authorization, destination health, throttling, or retry handling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the metric timeline as a sequence

Look for the order in which measurements change, not just their totals. A rise in TriggeredRules followed by InvocationAttempts proves that EventBridge progressed from evaluation to delivery. A rise in RetryInvocationAttempts with increasing latency indicates that the target was reached but did not accept requests promptly. A rise in FailedInvocations without retries can point to a permanent configuration or authorization error. Always select the dimensions for the specific event bus and rule; an account-wide graph can hide a healthy rule beside a failing one.

5. When the rule matches but the target receives nothing

Validate destination identity and location

  • Confirm the target ARN exactly, including function alias or version, queue or topic name, and event-bus ARN.
  • Verify that the destination has not been deleted, replaced, or moved to another account or Region.
  • Check that the target service is operating and has capacity. Throttling, concurrency limits, queue limits, slow responses, or a regional service problem can produce failed or delayed attempts.

Check EventBridge authorization

For targets that use an execution role, inspect the role’s trust relationship and ensure it trusts events.amazonaws.com. The permissions policy must allow the required target action, such as invoking a function, sending a message, or publishing to a topic. A role that exists but lacks the action still produces a delivery failure.

Some services rely on resource-based policies instead of, or in addition to, an execution role. For Lambda, verify invocation authorization. For SNS, verify publish permission. For SQS, inspect the queue policy; if the queue uses a customer-managed KMS key, inspect that key policy as well. Event bus targets and bus permissions have additional account and role requirements documented in Event bus targets in Amazon EventBridge and Permissions for event buses in Amazon EventBridge.

Cross-account and cross-Region routes

For a target bus in another account, verify the receiving bus resource policy, the sending account’s role configuration, and the exact destination ARN. Confirm that the event is sent to the Region where the receiving bus exists. A successful match in the source account does not override a missing permission in the destination account.

6. Separate transient delivery failures from permanent ones

EventBridge retries delivery according to the rule’s configured retry policy. AWS’s currently documented default is up to 24 hours and 185 attempts; a customized policy can change both duration and attempt count. Retries help with temporary throttling or service unavailability, but they cannot repair a deleted target or a missing permission.

Read the DLQ, not just the queue depth

When a rule has a DLQ, inspect each message’s attributes and body. AWS documents metadata that can identify the error, the exhausted-retry condition, rule ARN, target ARN, and number of attempts. Missing target permission, an invalid or missing destination, and similar permanent errors may go directly to the DLQ without the normal retry sequence. Correct the underlying configuration before replaying or regenerating events. See Using dead-letter queues to process undelivered events in EventBridge.

Use metrics to confirm recovery

After fixing a policy, target, or capacity limit, send a new event and watch for a successful invocation and a decrease in new DLQ messages. Do not infer recovery solely from an empty DLQ: a queue may be empty because messages were consumed, expired, or never produced.

7. Scheduled-rule troubleshooting

A scheduled rule does not wait for an incoming event pattern. Verify its cron or rate expression, the rule’s enabled state, target permissions, and the UTC basis used by EventBridge. AWS documents one-minute cron resolution: a scheduled rule runs within the specified minute, not at an exact second. A rule written for a local wall-clock assumption can therefore appear early or late.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Read the expression exactly as stored and convert the intended local time to UTC, including daylight-saving changes.
  2. Confirm the rule’s Region and target are the ones you monitor.
  3. Wait through the complete scheduled minute, then inspect TriggeredRules and invocation metrics.
  4. If it triggered but did not deliver, follow the same target-permission, capacity, retry, and DLQ checks as an event-pattern rule.

Do not confuse an EventBridge scheduled rule with EventBridge Scheduler; they are separate scheduling paths with different configuration surfaces.

8. Investigate duplicates and feedback loops

Design for occasional duplicate delivery

A rule or target can rarely be invoked more than once for one event. Make downstream processing idempotent: use a stable event identifier or business key, record processed IDs where appropriate, and make updates safe to repeat. Never assume that one invocation always means one unique event.

Stop self-triggering loops

If a target emits an event that matches the same rule, the rule can invoke itself repeatedly. Narrow the pattern to exclude the rule’s own output, change the emitted event type or source, or route the follow-up event to a different bus. AWS warns that loops can increase charges quickly, so add loop-prevention conditions before enabling a producer-consumer chain.

9. Use logs with the correct expectations

Event bus processing logs can record processing steps when logging is enabled. They are useful for following an event through ingestion and rule evaluation, but AWS states that unmatched AWS events are discarded without event-processing logs. Therefore, an empty log stream does not prove that the producer failed or that the bus was unreachable. Pair logs with a source-side emission check, a Sandbox or TestEventPattern result, and CloudWatch rule metrics. Details of logged processing steps are in What Amazon EventBridge logs for event buses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. A fast decision checklist

  1. Wrong bus or Region? Identify the event’s actual bus, account, and Region; account for global-service events in US East (N. Virginia).
  2. Rule disabled or recently changed? Enable it, verify the target list, wait for propagation, and generate a fresh event.
  3. Pattern mismatch? Test the exact payload with Sandbox or TestEventPattern; inspect nesting, case, values, missing resources, and ARN punctuation.
  4. Match proven? Check TriggeredRules, then move to invocation metrics rather than editing the pattern again.
  5. Invocation failed? Verify target ARN, account, Region, existence, role trust, action permissions, and resource-based policies.
  6. Target constrained? Check throttling, capacity, service health, SQS/KMS policy, SNS publish permission, or Lambda invocation authorization.
  7. Retries or DLQ? Read error metadata, distinguish transient from permanent failures, fix the cause, and retest.
  8. Unexpected repeats or rising spend? Check for duplicate-safe processing and a rule-to-target feedback loop.

Keep the investigation at the stage where evidence stops: pattern tests and TriggeredRules diagnose matching; invocation, failure, retry, latency, and DLQ evidence diagnose delivery. This prevents changing a correct pattern when the real fault is a target policy or an unavailable destination.

11. Common diagnostic traps

A successful manual test can still be misleading if it uses a different bus, Region, account, or event shape from production. Reproduce the production route as closely as possible: publish the test event to the same bus, use the same source and detail fields, and observe the same rule dimensions. Testing a pattern against a hand-written payload that omits a nested field can create a false sense of confidence.

Do not treat a single CloudWatch datapoint as a verdict. Metrics can arrive after the event, and retries can continue for hours. Record the event timestamp, rule update time, first invocation attempt, and final DLQ timestamp. That timeline distinguishes propagation delay from a target that was unavailable throughout the retry window.

When several targets are attached to one rule, inspect each target separately. One target may succeed while another is throttled or unauthorized, so an overall rule match does not mean every destination received the event. Likewise, correcting a role policy affects only future attempts; verify the fix with a new event and examine its resulting metrics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my EventBridge rule show no TriggeredRules?

First verify the event bus, account, Region, rule state, and source. Then test the exact production event against the pattern in the EventBridge Sandbox or with TestEventPattern. Check nested fields, capitalization, value types, ARN punctuation, and whether a CloudTrail event lacks resources. Allow for CloudWatch metric delay and for recent rule changes to propagate.

Why does EventBridge match the rule but not invoke Lambda?

A match only starts delivery. Confirm the Lambda ARN, alias or version, account, and Region, then verify that Lambda’s resource-based policy allows EventBridge invocation. Review Invocations, FailedInvocations, retry metrics, throttling, concurrency limits, and any configured DLQ for the specific target.

Where can I see failed EventBridge events?

Use the rule’s CloudWatch delivery metrics and inspect the configured SQS dead-letter queue. DLQ message metadata can include the error, exhausted-retry condition, rule ARN, target ARN, and retry count. Some permanent failures, such as missing permission or an invalid destination, can be sent directly to the DLQ without normal retries.

How long does EventBridge retry a failed target?

The currently documented default retry policy allows delivery attempts for up to 24 hours and up to 185 attempts. A rule can use a customized policy, so inspect its configured maximum event age and retry count before predicting when an event will reach the DLQ or be dropped.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my scheduled EventBridge rule run at the wrong time?

Scheduled rules use UTC and one-minute cron resolution. They run within the specified minute rather than at an exact second. Convert the intended local time to UTC, account for daylight-saving changes, verify the rule’s Region and enabled state, and distinguish an EventBridge scheduled rule from EventBridge Scheduler.

Can an EventBridge rule fire more than once for one event?

Yes. AWS notes that a rule or target can rarely be invoked more than once for an event. Make the target idempotent by using a stable event identifier or business key and making writes safe to repeat.

Why is there no EventBridge processing log for my event?

Unmatched AWS events are discarded without event-processing logs, so an empty log does not prove that the source failed. Confirm source emission, test the pattern directly, and use TriggeredRules and delivery metrics to determine whether the event reached rule evaluation.

What permissions are needed for an encrypted SQS target?

Check the queue policy and the customer-managed KMS key policy, in addition to any EventBridge execution-role trust and action permissions. For SNS, verify publish permission; for Lambda, verify invocation authorization. Cross-account event-bus targets also require the receiving bus resource policy and correct role configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Debug EventBridge in order: prove the event reached the correct bus and matched the exact pattern, then follow invocation and failure metrics into permissions, target health, retries, and DLQ metadata. Scheduled rules require UTC and one-minute timing checks. Once delivery works, make consumers idempotent and prevent rule-to-target feedback loops.
