“DISM error – file not found” can refer to different failures, so the first step is to capture the exact error code and command. For a repairable online Windows image, try Microsoft’s documented repair command in an elevated Command Prompt: DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. If it cannot find required repair files, check the source options below rather than assuming one particular cause.
What does the DISM “file not found” error mean?
The wording alone is not a diagnosis. Microsoft defines 0x80070002 as ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND: the system cannot find the specified file. By contrast, 0x800F081F is CBS_E_SOURCE_MISSING: servicing could not find a source for a package or file. These codes point to different kinds of failures, and neither identifies the specific file or underlying cause by itself. What information should you collect first?
Before changing repair settings, note the complete error code and command, your Windows edition, version and build, and whether DISM is working on the running Windows installation or an offline image. This information helps distinguish an unavailable repair source from a missing file, package payload, or another servicing issue.
How do you check and repair an online Windows image?
1. Scan the image
Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealthMicrosoft documents /ScanHealth for checking an online image. If DISM reports that the image is repairable, proceed with RestoreHealth. If it reports that the image is non-repairable, Microsoft’s guidance is to discard that image and start again. See Microsoft’s Windows image repair guidance.

2. Run RestoreHealth
In an elevated Command Prompt, run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthRestoreHealth checks the component store for corruption and attempts repairs. Microsoft says the operation may take several minutes. When a suitable source is available, DISM can use Windows Update to obtain missing or corrupted files. See Microsoft’s repair instructions.
What if DISM says the source files could not be found?
If the default repair source cannot provide the files, DISM can use an alternate source specified with /Source. Microsoft lists a working Windows installation and Windows files on a network share, USB drive, or DVD as alternatives when Windows Update cannot be used. The selected source must contain the files needed by the target image. The right source location and syntax depend on the specific image and environment; Microsoft’s guidance does not establish one universal ISO index or command for every machine.

Microsoft says DISM repair works best when connected to Microsoft Update servers to fetch missing or corrupted files. If you want Windows Update to provide repair files, do not block it with /LimitAccess. This option prevents DISM from contacting Windows Update when repairing online images; use it only when that restriction is intended and an appropriate alternate source is available. After the DISM repair step, run System File Checker from an elevated Command Prompt:

Why might the error persist?
- The error code and command are needed to identify the type of failure; the phrase “file not found” alone does not establish its cause.
- The repair source may be unavailable or may not contain the files needed by the target image.
/LimitAccessmay prevent Windows Update from supplying files if it was included unintentionally.- A package payload or another servicing operation may be involved; the exact build and relevant log entries are needed to investigate a particular machine.
