Before changing anything else, record the engine, exact old and new versions, operating system, GPU and driver, target platform, renderer or graphics API, and the point where the symptom appears: editor startup, project import, compilation, packaging, export, or runtime. Those details determine which compatibility notes and recovery path apply. Protect the original project, reproduce the issue on a copy, and change one variable at a time. A project that stutters after an upgrade may be compiling shaders, a setting that appears to have vanished may be using an implicit default, and a crash may be caused by a package or plugin rather than the engine core.

1. Capture the exact change before troubleshooting

“After the engine update” is not precise enough to identify a cause. Write down the complete environment in a small incident note and attach the first relevant log. Include:

Item What to record Why it matters
Engine Unity, Unreal Engine, Godot, or another engine; edition if applicable Each engine stores settings, caches, packages, and migration data differently.
Versions Exact source and target versions, including minor or patch numbers Upgrade behavior and known regressions are version-specific.
Computer Operating system, CPU, GPU, graphics-driver version, and display setup Driver caches, compositors, and API support can change frame pacing or startup behavior.
Target Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, console, or another build target An editor-only success does not prove that a packaged target is compatible.
Renderer Direct3D, Vulkan, Metal, OpenGL, Forward+, Mobile, Compatibility, or the project’s equivalent Shader compilation and feature availability depend on the renderer.
Failure point Editor launch, project import, script compilation, build, export, or runtime The location narrows the likely subsystem and the useful log.
Reproduction Scene, action, frequency, and whether it happens on first use or every time One-time shader work looks different from a persistent frame-time regression.

Keep the old project and the upgraded project identifiable. Do not overwrite the only copy while trying a fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Create a rollback point before conversion

Use version control or a separate backup

Make a commit or tag at the last known-good engine version, then create a separate branch for the upgrade. If version control is unavailable, copy the project folder to another location or an external drive before opening it in the new editor. Unity’s upgrade guidance treats version control as the preferred backup practice and notes that generated Library data can often be omitted from a manual backup because Unity can regenerate it. Confirm that your backup contains source assets, project settings, packages, plugins, scripts, and any custom build files before deleting anything.

Run the old project from the preserved checkpoint once, using the same scene and settings you will use for comparison. Record a short video or frame-time capture if the problem is visual or intermittent. This gives you a baseline instead of relying on memory.

Use Unreal’s copy workflow

When Unreal offers the conversion choice, select Open a Copy rather than converting the only working project in place. Epic states that a project updated to a newer Unreal Engine version cannot be opened in an older version, and that an in-place conversion can cause irreversible corruption or data loss if conversion fails. The official wording is: “After you update a project to a newer version of Unreal Engine, you will not be able to open it in an older Unreal Engine version.” A failed conversion creates an error log; preserve it and read the specific failure before attempting another conversion.

General project-update guidance is available in Epic’s Unreal project update documentation. Treat the copied project as disposable until it opens, imports, packages, and runs correctly.

3. Build a version-specific compatibility map

Read the target version’s upgrade guide and release notes before changing project files. Check package, plugin, scripting-language, shader, and platform requirements. A major-version migration may require manual work even when the editor completes its automatic conversion.

Unity

Unity recommends resolving compilation errors and deprecations in Safe Mode before allowing the rest of the project to import. Open Package Manager and identify packages that do not support the target editor. Then inspect custom scripts, shaders, native plugins, and asset-store dependencies. Build for every platform you actually ship; an editor that appears healthy can still fail during an Android, iOS, desktop, or console build. Use the backed-up project in the old editor to determine whether a change is an upgrade regression or an existing defect.

The detailed procedure and compatibility cautions are in Unity’s project upgrade guide. For a specific target release, also read that release’s notes rather than assuming that a guide for another minor version applies.

Godot

Check the project’s renderer, editor plugins, GDExtensions, imported resources, and export templates against the target Godot version. If the project crashes immediately from Project Manager, use recovery mode to disable or bypass project features while you investigate. Godot’s troubleshooting documentation covers this path and other startup failures: Godot troubleshooting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Unreal Engine

Read the conversion log and the feature-specific migration notes. A UE4-to-UE5 move, for example, may require project decisions around Nanite, Lumen, Chaos, materials, lighting, and physics; automatic conversion does not guarantee that every system is ready for production. Epic’s Unreal Engine 5 Migration Guide identifies areas that need manual review. Keep the old branch available while you make those changes.

4. When the editor crashes or the project will not compile

Unity: stop at Safe Mode and fix the first error

  1. Open the upgraded project and choose Safe Mode when Unity reports script compilation errors.
  2. Read the first Console error, then fix errors in dependency order; later messages can be consequences of the first failure.
  3. Review deprecations and API changes in the target-version upgrade guide.
  4. In Package Manager, update, replace, or remove packages that do not support the target editor.
  5. Temporarily disable custom editor scripts, shaders, native plugins, and third-party assets one category at a time to find the incompatible component.
  6. After the editor is stable, make a development build for each target platform and compare it with the backed-up project.

Do not “fix” a crash by deleting the project’s source assets or by accepting every package upgrade at once. That destroys the ability to identify which change mattered.

Godot: use recovery mode and isolate extensions

  1. From Project Manager, launch the project in recovery mode if it crashes before the editor opens.
  2. Disable editor plugins and GDExtensions, then reopen the project.
  3. If it opens, re-enable one extension at a time until the crash returns.
  4. Check imported resources and the first error in the editor log before changing renderer settings.
  5. Run the project from a copy and test the same scene with the extension disabled to confirm causality.

Recovery mode is a diagnostic state, not a final configuration. Restore only the extension that is compatible with the target version.

Unreal: preserve the conversion error and resolve its named cause

  1. Open the conversion or startup log and identify the first fatal error, missing module, asset version, or unsupported feature.
  2. Verify that every plugin is installed for the target engine and that its binary matches the engine version and platform.
  3. Check migration requirements for systems such as Nanite, Lumen, and Chaos instead of assuming the converter completed them.
  4. Apply one manual migration, reopen the copied project, and confirm whether the original error changed.
  5. Only after the editor opens reliably should you regenerate derived data or attempt a full package.

If the log points to a project asset, test that asset in an isolated copy. If it points to a module or plugin, remove or rebuild that dependency rather than repeatedly converting the whole project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Diagnose stuttering without blaming the hardware

First classify the hitch. Play the same repeatable scene in the old and new projects, record frame times, and note whether the hitch occurs once when an effect or material first appears or recurs every time the camera revisits it.

Godot shader and frame-pacing checks

Godot documents shader-compilation stutter during a first playthrough and after a graphics-driver update invalidates the shader cache. Godot 4.4 and later use an ubershader approach for the Forward+ and Mobile renderers. Projects using the Compatibility renderer may need to render meshes and effects during level loading so compilation happens before interactive play. Test a representative loading path rather than judging the game from the first traversal alone. The renderer and stutter details are documented at Godot’s stutter guidance.

Disabling V-Sync can make some timing irregularities less noticeable, but it can introduce tearing and does not remove large shader-compilation hitches. Treat it as a presentation test, not a universal fix. If the issue changes only with one window mode, test the graphics driver, desktop compositor, background applications, and window mode as separate variables.

Unreal shader and traversal checks

Epic recommends profiling Pipeline State Object (PSO) misses or late PSOs and using PSO precaching where appropriate. A hitch that remains after shaders and PSOs are warm is not automatically a shader problem. Epic also identifies synchronous loading, excessive spawning, streaming, scene captures, and other expensive operations as possible sources of traversal stutter. Use the same scene, camera route, resolution, quality settings, and target hardware in both engine versions. The relevant explanation is in Epic’s shader-stuttering article.

Unity comparison and profiling

Run the backed-up project and the upgraded project under identical conditions. Capture CPU and GPU frame times, memory, draw calls, and loading markers in the Unity profiler. Check whether a package, shader variant, render-pipeline change, or synchronous asset load appeared only in the new version. A lower average frame rate and a higher 99th-percentile frame time are different problems; record both if your profiler exposes them.

6. When project settings appear to be missing or reset

Do not assume that a setting disappeared because it is absent from the visible editor panel. Engines may hide defaults, move options into a plugin category, apply platform overrides, or replace a saved value with a runtime property.

Unreal: inspect the configuration source

Unreal Project Settings are stored in configuration files. The editor normally writes project defaults to Config/DefaultEngine.ini; platform-specific .ini files apply only to their respective platform and may require manual editing. The Project Settings window can export and import settings, which is useful for comparing the backed-up and upgraded projects. Plugins can add their own categories, so verify that the relevant plugin is installed and enabled before concluding that an option was removed.

Godot: distinguish defaults from saved values

Godot does not write every default into project.godot. A missing key can therefore mean that the project is using the engine’s implicit default, not that conversion erased it. Enable Advanced Settings in Project Settings to reveal options hidden in the basic view.

Many Godot settings are read only at startup. If runtime code changes a value, inspect the corresponding runtime property or method and the value after startup rather than relying only on the saved editor field. Use the project settings reference at Godot Project Settings documentation to determine whether a setting is persistent, advanced, or startup-only.

Unity: check release-specific workflow and package changes

Read the upgrade guide and release notes for the exact target version. Version changes can deprecate APIs, move workflows, or require package updates without deleting the project’s underlying data. For example, Unity 6.3 documentation says the UPM_NPM_CACHE_PATH environment variable is no longer supported and describes Android build-tool changes that can affect projects with custom Gradle templates or older plugins. If a setting appears absent, search the target-version documentation and inspect package-specific settings before recreating values manually. The Unity 6.3 guide is at Unity’s Unity 6.3 upgrade guide.

7. When the editor works but exported files or assets are missing

Godot export filters and case-sensitive paths

If a Godot project runs in the editor but an exported build cannot find a file, open the Export dialog and check its filters. Non-resource files such as JSON may require an explicit inclusion filter even when scripts and imported resources are included automatically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare filename and folder capitalization character by character. The exported PCK filesystem is case-sensitive even when the default Windows filesystem is not. A reference to Data/config.json will not necessarily find data/Config.json in the exported package. Test the packaged build on a case-sensitive environment or inspect the exported PCK contents rather than trusting a Windows editor run. See Godot’s troubleshooting documentation for export-specific checks.

General export checks

  • Confirm that the asset is included by the target platform’s build profile, not merely visible in the editor.
  • Check that a plugin or package required at runtime is enabled for the export target.
  • Inspect the packaged-build log for the exact path the runtime requested and the path that was included.
  • Reproduce with one missing asset in a minimal scene to separate export configuration from unrelated startup failures.

8. Handle caches deliberately

Cache deletion is not a universal repair. A cache rebuild can explain temporarily slower imports or first-run loading, but deleting data before reading logs can hide the evidence and create a second performance problem.

Unreal’s Derived Data Cache (DDC) stores regenerable derived data produced from source assets. Epic notes that absent cached files can dramatically increase load times. If Unreal appears not to be reading cached data, search the log for LogDerivedDataCache and determine whether the cache is being found, populated, or bypassed before deleting it. The official reference is Using Derived Data Cache in Unreal Engine.

Apply the same principle to other engines: clear only the cache associated with a documented failure, keep the source project untouched, and measure the next import or first-run traversal. If performance improves only after warm-up, record that fact; it points to derived data or shader work rather than proving that the upgrade permanently reduced performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Use a controlled comparison instead of guesswork

  1. Restore the known-good project at the old engine version and verify the baseline scene, settings, and target build.
  2. Duplicate that project and upgrade only the duplicate.
  3. Use the same operating system, driver, renderer, resolution, quality settings, scene, input path, and target platform.
  4. Capture the first crash log or first repeatable hitch before making a change.
  5. Change one variable: a package, plugin, renderer, shader cache, export filter, or configuration value.
  6. Repeat the exact test and record whether the symptom disappeared, moved, or stayed identical.
  7. Keep a short change log so that a failed experiment can be reversed without restoring the entire project.
Question Evidence to compare
Did the upgrade cause the failure? Old-version run versus upgraded copy with the same scene and hardware.
Is a hitch first-use shader work? First encounter versus repeated encounter after warm-up, plus shader or PSO profiler markers.
Was a setting erased? Saved configuration, platform override, editor visibility, and runtime value.
Is an export omission caused by filtering? Export profile, packaged-file listing, requested runtime path, and filename case.
Did cache behavior change? Import/load times and cache log entries before and after a targeted rebuild.

10. A symptom-led decision checklist

  • Crash before the editor opens: use the engine’s recovery or Safe Mode path, disable plugins or extensions, and read the first fatal log entry.
  • Compilation errors after opening: resolve the first script or package error, then address deprecations and incompatible dependencies.
  • Conversion failure: keep the copy, preserve the conversion log, and follow the named migration requirement instead of retrying blindly.
  • One-time stutter on first encounter: investigate shader or PSO compilation and cache warm-up.
  • Recurring traversal stutter: profile synchronous loading, streaming, spawning, scene captures, CPU work, and GPU frame time.
  • Setting not visible: enable advanced views, verify the plugin, inspect configuration files and platform overrides, and check runtime state.
  • Editor works but export is missing a file: inspect export filters and exact path capitalization, especially for non-resource files.
  • Everything became slower after cache deletion: stop deleting caches, inspect cache logs, and allow derived data to regenerate while measuring the result.

What a useful bug report contains

When you need help from an engine issue tracker or team member, provide the exact engine pair, operating system, GPU and driver, renderer, target platform, project scale, reproduction steps, first failing log lines, and whether the issue appears in the old project. Include a minimal reproduction or a copy that excludes confidential assets. State whether the hitch is first-use or persistent and whether a setting is absent from the file, hidden in the editor, overridden per platform, or different only at runtime. This prevents a generic “the upgrade broke my game” report from turning into a long series of unrelated guesses.

Final verification before adopting the new engine

Do not promote the upgraded project merely because the editor launches. Verify a clean checkout or copy, a complete import, no unresolved compilation errors, the target renderer, representative scenes, first-run and warmed-up frame times, platform exports, save/load behavior, and the settings that matter to your game. Keep the old-engine checkpoint until the new build has passed those checks and the team has a documented way to reproduce or diagnose any remaining limitation.
