A crash or slowdown that appears immediately after a PS5 game update does not, by itself, prove the update is defective. First determine whether only that game is affected or whether the console has broader symptoms. Record the error and reproduction steps, restart the PS5, install any pending game and system-software updates, and reinstall the affected game before using Safe Mode or any reset that could erase data.
The sequence below follows PlayStation’s current support guidance while keeping the least disruptive, reversible actions first. Menu labels and support procedures can change, so confirm them on the linked official pages if your console displays different wording.
1. Record exactly what is happening
Write down the evidence before changing settings. PlayStation support asks for the error code, a detailed description, reproduction steps, and, when possible, a screenshot or video. This information also helps you distinguish a bad installation from a wider console problem.

Capture these details
- The game’s version number, if the title shows one.
- When the issue began and whether it started immediately after the game update.
- Whether the game fails at launch, during a loading screen, or after you have been playing.
- What the failure looks like: a crash to the home screen, a freeze, an error message, severe stutter, unusually long loading, or a general frame-rate drop.
- The complete error code and wording. Photograph the screen if necessary; a single character can point to a different support article.
- The precise actions that reproduce it, such as opening a particular save, entering a map, or selecting an online mode.
- Whether another game shows the same behavior.
A useful log is short and chronological: “Updated at approximately 8 p.m.; first launch reached the title screen; opening the existing save caused CE-108262-9; a second installed game launched normally.” Note whether the behavior happens every time or only intermittently. If a failure is random, record how many attempts succeeded and failed rather than describing it simply as “broken.”

Do not assume that timing establishes cause. A game patch and a PS5 system-software update are separate pieces of software, and another background change could coincide with the first failure.
2. Decide whether it is one game or the whole console
Play the affected title once more and, if practical, test a different installed game. This simple comparison determines how far down the troubleshooting path you should go. Do not spend hours repeatedly loading a save just to prove a point; one or two controlled tests are enough to classify the symptom initially.
| What you observe | Most useful interpretation | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Only one game crashes or stutters; other games behave normally | The installation, that title’s save/content, or a title-specific defect is more plausible. This is not proof that the latest patch is at fault. | Restart, check both update channels, then reinstall that game. |
| Several games or PS5 features slow down, freeze, or fail | A console-level software or storage-database issue deserves attention. | Restart and update the system; if symptoms continue, use the appropriate Safe Mode cache or database option. |
| The game fails only at launch | Launch or application-data handling is the immediate branch. | Check for updates, then follow the launch-failure and reinstall guidance. |
| The game launches but crashes during play | The failure may depend on a save, mode, asset, or later process; it still can be isolated to one title. | Capture the exact reproduction steps before reinstalling or contacting support. |
| A PS5 system update is also pending or was installed at the same time | You cannot attribute the behavior to the game patch alone. | Bring system software fully up to date before judging the game update. |
Compare like with like: test another game from the same console, not a streamed session or a different device. Also note whether the slowdown affects the PS5 home screen or only the game. A title-specific crash points toward application files or the title’s own code; a sluggish interface, multiple failed applications, or several games freezing justifies console-level checks.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This is a diagnostic framework, not a published ranking of causes. The official guidance does not provide a frequency statistic for crashes after game updates.
3. Perform the low-risk fixes first
Restart the PS5 completely
Use the console’s normal Power menu to restart, rather than immediately pulling the power cable. After the restart, launch the game and repeat the action that caused the failure. A restart clears a temporary process state without removing installed games or saves.
Allow the shutdown and startup sequence to finish before opening the game again. If the console is responding slowly, wait for the home screen to become usable instead of selecting the game repeatedly. Repeating launches while an earlier process is still closing can make the symptom harder to interpret.
Check the game for another update
- Highlight the affected game on the PS5 home screen.
- Press the Options button on the controller.
- Select Check for Update.
- Install anything offered, wait for the download and installation to finish, and then restart the game.
PlayStation documents this procedure in its game and application update instructions. If no update appears, that only means the console has no newer package available from the service at that moment; it does not establish that the installed patch is bug-free.
Check PS5 system software separately
Open Settings and the PS5 system-software update screen, then install any available update. Do not conflate this check with the game’s version: a title patch updates the application, while system software updates the console platform. PlayStation’s system-software guidance covers the supported update process and current requirements.

After both checks, test the same reproducible scenario. If one game remains broken while other games are fine, proceed to a game reinstall rather than changing console-wide settings. If a system update was installed during the same period, record that fact in your log; it is important context for support.
4. Reinstall the affected game when only one title is affected
PlayStation recommends deleting and reinstalling a game for update problems and launch failures. Reinstallation replaces the local application files and downloads a fresh copy; it does not guarantee a fix for a defect in the developer’s code or server-side service.
Before deleting
- Confirm you know the account that owns the game or the disc you will use to reinstall it.
- Expect a potentially large download and installation time. Plan for the console to remain occupied while the base application and its update are obtained again.
- Check your save-data situation. Reinstalling the application is different from deleting saved data, but do not choose a save-data deletion option while troubleshooting the game files.
- If you rely on cloud or USB backups, make sure the latest save is available before making other changes.
- Keep screenshots, videos, and the original error wording. Deleting the application should not erase that evidence, but preserving it separately avoids losing the diagnostic record.
Reinstall procedure
- Highlight the game, press Options, and choose the console’s delete option for the application.
- Confirm that you are deleting the game application, not saved data or captured media.
- Reinstall from your game library, the PlayStation Store, or the game disc, as applicable.
- Allow the base installation and every offered update to complete before testing. Interrupting the process can leave an incomplete application that looks like the original fault.
- Reproduce the original steps and record whether the error code or behavior changed.
If the same title still fails in exactly the same place after a clean reinstall, keep the evidence and move to the support and escalation steps rather than repeatedly downloading it. A reinstall is a troubleshooting step, not a rollback to an earlier patch and not a promise that a developer-side defect has been corrected.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors5. Use Safe Mode for broader performance or system-feature problems
Sony specifically states: “Select Clear System Software Cache if you’re experiencing system feature issues or performance drops.” Cache clearing is intended for console-wide feature or performance symptoms, not as a guaranteed repair for a defective game patch.
Enter Safe Mode safely
- Turn the PS5 off completely. Do not start with Rest Mode.
- Press and hold the console’s power button. Release it after you hear the second beep, approximately seven seconds after the first beep.
- Connect the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable.
- Press the controller’s PS button.
- Read the current Safe Mode menu and select only the option that matches the symptom you are addressing.
The official PS5 Safe Mode and troubleshooting page contains the current procedure and option descriptions. A controller connection is required for this menu; the cable is a task requirement, not a crash fix or a normally necessary purchase. If the controller does not respond, check the physical connection and follow the current PlayStation instructions rather than guessing at another menu option.
Clear System Software Cache
Choose Clear System Software Cache when the console has system-feature problems or a broader performance drop. This is a maintenance operation aimed at temporary system data. It is different from reinstalling the operating system and is the less disruptive Safe Mode choice for the symptoms Sony associates with it.
Rebuild Database
Rebuild Database scans the drive and creates a new database of the console’s system content. It is a separate option with a different purpose from cache clearing. Use it when the official troubleshooting guidance or the exact error code points you there, especially when application or system content appears difficult to read or organize. The scan can take time; do not turn off the console while it is running.
Neither option should be described as a guaranteed rollback of a game update. Safe Mode can help a console-level software state, but it cannot rewrite a developer’s faulty patch. Choose one relevant option, let it finish, then test the original scenario; changing several settings at once makes it difficult to know what affected the result.

6. Understand error codes instead of guessing
CE-108262-9
CE-108262-9 means an error occurred while reading system software or application data. PlayStation’s recommendations for this code include updating system software, reinstalling the game or application when the error occurs after starting it, and rebuilding the database in Safe Mode. Follow the code-specific instructions at the official CE-108262-9 page.
This code is an example, not a universal explanation for every post-update crash. Different application, update, and storage errors have different remedies. Use the PS5 error-code hub to find the page for the exact code shown on your console. If there is no code, report the wording and the point at which the failure occurs instead of substituting a similar-looking code.
Do not infer a storage failure merely because an application stopped. The code, whether one or several games are affected, and whether reinstalling changes the result all provide more useful evidence than a similar-looking message found in a forum. Keep the complete code, including hyphens and final digits.
7. Know when to stop and escalate
Use official diagnostics before destructive actions
If the game still crashes after a restart, current software, a clean reinstall, and the relevant non-destructive Safe Mode step, use PlayStation’s Repairs diagnostic route from the official support site. It can help separate a software symptom from a console hardware or service issue. Also check the game’s developer support and service-status notices for a known title-specific incident; do not treat an unconfirmed notice as proof that your console is defective.
Escalate sooner if several games fail, the home screen also behaves abnormally, or the console cannot complete its normal update process. Tell support exactly which branch you tested rather than simply saying “I tried everything.” That lets the next technician avoid repeating steps and focus on the remaining possibilities.
Back up before a reset or system-software reinstallation
Resetting the PS5 or reinstalling PS5 system software can delete user data. These are escalation measures, not the next step after a single game crash. Back up saves and other important data first, verify that the backup is usable, and read the exact warning for the Safe Mode option you are about to select. Sony also cautions against unofficial update files or installation methods; use only the official process and files described in its support documentation.
There is no supported reason to download an unofficial package because a game update caused a crash. Such files can create a separate installation problem and may remove the diagnostic trail you need for official support.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not repeatedly force power-off
Use the normal shutdown path whenever the console responds. If it is frozen, follow the official recovery instructions rather than repeatedly disconnecting power. An interrupted write can create a separate data or database problem, making the original game symptom harder to diagnose.

8. Prepare a useful support report
When contacting PlayStation or the game’s developer, provide a compact, reproducible record:
- PS5 model and the system-software version.
- Game title, edition, disc or digital ownership, and visible game version.
- The date and approximate time the problem began.
- Whether one game or multiple games are affected.
- Whether the crash occurs at launch, during a specific activity, or randomly during play.
- The exact error code or message, copied character-for-character.
- What you already tried: restart, update checks, reinstall, cache clearing, or database rebuild.
- Reproduction steps that another person can follow.
- A screenshot or short video, if the console or another device can capture it without exposing personal information.
Keep the original wording even if an online search suggests a different code. Support can map the exact code and sequence to the correct repair path; an approximate description can send you to the wrong one. Include whether the clean reinstall used the same account or disc and whether the failure remained at the same point afterward.
9. A practical decision path
- Capture evidence. Record the code, timing, trigger, and whether other games work.
- Restart normally. Test the same scenario once.
- Update both layers. Check the game with Options > Check for Update and check PS5 system software separately.
- One title only? Reinstall that game, taking care not to delete saved data.
- Several games or system features affected? Enter Safe Mode and consider Clear System Software Cache; use Rebuild Database when its stated purpose or the code-specific guidance fits.
- Still failing? Preserve the evidence, consult the exact error-code page, and use PlayStation Repairs or the game developer’s support channel.
- Considering reset or system-software reinstallation? Back up first and accept that user data may be erased.
This order minimizes disruption while still reaching the console-level tools that Sony provides for broader performance drops. It also keeps a reproducible record if the underlying problem is a game-side defect that requires a later developer fix.

Does a crash immediately after a patch prove the patch caused it?
No. The timing is evidence worth reporting, but it does not establish causation. A PS5 system-software change, application-data problem, or unrelated service issue can occur at the same time. Compare another game and complete both update checks before drawing a conclusion.
Should I reinstall the PS5 system software first?
No. Reinstalling system software can delete user data and is an escalation measure. Restart, update the game and console, reinstall the affected title, and use the relevant non-destructive Safe Mode option first. Back up before considering any reset or system-software reinstallation.
Will reinstalling the game delete my saves?
Deleting the application is separate from deleting saved data, but read each confirmation screen carefully and do not select a save-data deletion option. Verify your cloud or USB backup before making broader changes.
Which Safe Mode option should I choose for stutter?
If the stutter is part of a broader console performance drop or system-feature problem, Sony specifically identifies Clear System Software Cache for that symptom. Rebuild Database is a separate scan that creates a new database of system content. Neither option guarantees a fix for a defective game patch.
Do I need to buy a special cable for Safe Mode?
Safe Mode requires connecting the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable. The cable enables the menu; it is not a treatment for crashes, and no particular model is required by the guidance. Use a cable that can connect the controller as directed by PlayStation.
