Most post-modding Steam Deck failures can be narrowed down without reinstalling the game: update SteamOS, restart, identify whether one game or several are affected, launch the unmodded title, then re-enable mods and compatibility changes one at a time. Keep the original settings recorded, and treat every change as a reversible test. The steps below separate a broken mod from a Proton, launcher, manager, or system problem and show what evidence to collect when you need support.
Start by recording the last known-good configuration
Do not begin by changing several settings at once. Write down the game, SteamOS update state, selected compatibility tool, mod manager or loader, the most recent mod installed or updated, and the exact error text. For a visual defect, take a screenshot if possible and note when it appears: during gameplay, in the game’s launcher, in a mod manager window, or in an overlay. This record gives you a before-and-after comparison and prevents an unrelated change from being blamed on the mod.
- Game title and whether it is installed from Steam
- SteamOS update status and the date of the last update
- Compatibility setting currently selected in the game’s Properties dialog
- Mod manager, loader, and versions in use
- Last mod added, removed, or updated
- Exact error wording, including messages such as Error launching game, compatibility tool failed
- Whether the problem is a crash, a failure to launch, a freeze, or a rendering artifact
That wording is a symptom description, not a diagnosis. A compatibility-tool error can result from the selected Proton setup, a launcher or mod manager, or a change in the game’s files.
Use failure scope to choose the next branch
Valve’s troubleshooting guidance distinguishes system instability from a problem in a particular Steam application. Scope is therefore a useful diagnostic clue, but it does not prove the cause. Test another game and, where your saves and mod setup can be preserved safely, test the affected title without its mods.

If multiple Steam applications fail, do not infer that every installed mod is broken. Conversely, a single affected game does not prove that its newest mod is responsible; it simply narrows the investigation.
Apply the reversible Steam Deck checks first
Valve’s Steam Deck – Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide gives updates and a restart as the first response to instability and application problems. Its instruction is: “To address issues with system instability, install any available system updates (Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates) and restart your Steam Deck (from the Software Updates section or via Steam > Power > Restart).”
- Open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates.
- Install any available SteamOS update and allow the Deck to complete the restart it requests.
- If no update is available, restart manually with Steam > Power > Restart.
- If the game relies on an application installed or running from Desktop Mode, exit or disable that third-party application temporarily.
- Restart again and test the same launch path, without changing any other setting.
Third-party desktop software can affect stability, but disabling it is a diagnostic test, not proof that it was the cause. Re-enable one application at a time after the game is stable so you can identify a conflict rather than leaving unrelated software disabled permanently.
Test the base game before rebuilding the mod setup
The cleanest separation is a controlled launch with the recently added mods disabled. A publisher’s official mod-issues guidance recommends distinguishing a game problem from a mod problem and keeping mods updated.
Disable the smallest recent change first
- Record the current mod order and settings.
- Temporarily disable the newest mod, loader update, or configuration change.
- Launch the game using the same Steam compatibility setting as before.
- Repeat the test enough times to reproduce the original failure, rather than relying on one successful start.
If the failure disappears, the latest change is a strong lead, not conclusive proof. Check that mod’s current instructions and update it when an update is available. Do not assume that a mod that works on Windows, or that appears in a supported manager, will work on Linux or Proton. SteamTinkerLaunch explicitly states that it does not guarantee mod compatibility on Linux in its troubleshooting documentation.
Use a half-split test for a large mod list
- Preserve your recorded load order.
- Disable roughly half of the mods and launch.
- If the problem remains, the cause is likely in the still-enabled half; if it disappears, it is likely in the disabled half.
- Split the suspect half again and repeat until one mod or a small interaction reproduces the issue.
This method changes fewer variables than removing and reinstalling everything. Re-enable a small group at a time, and stop when the exact crash or visual defect returns. Keep the working configuration as a rollback point.
Check for version and instruction mismatches
Read the game developer’s mod instructions and the mod’s own compatibility notes. A game update can invalidate a loader or mod even when the files appear installed correctly. Update relevant mods only after recording the working state; if an update introduces the problem, revert that one update rather than replacing the entire setup.

Check Deck Verified status and Proton settings
Open the game’s Properties > Compatibility controls and compare the default setting with a specific Steam Play compatibility tool only as a controlled, reversible test. Before changing it, write down the original choice. Valve’s Deck Verified information explains the compatibility rating system; use the game’s stated requirements and rating as context, not as a guarantee that a modded installation will work.
- Open the game’s page in your Steam Library.
- Choose the gear icon, then Properties.
- Open Compatibility and note the current selection.
- Check the game’s Deck Verified category and the requirements associated with that rating.
- If the default tool fails, enable the option to force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool and select one version for the test.
- Launch the game and record whether the result changes.
- Revert to the original setting if the test makes the failure worse, then test a different single variable instead of stacking Proton changes.
Valve recommends trying the latest Proton version for some Steam application issues, but a particular game or mod loader can require title-specific handling. Do not treat a successful launch with one Proton version as a universal fix for other games.
Forcing a Windows compatibility version can also cause Steam to download it if only the Linux build is installed, as Valve notes in its support material. Allow for that download before judging the result, and make sure you know whether the game is using the intended build.
If SteamTinkerLaunch is part of the launch path
SteamTinkerLaunch has its own configuration requirements and logs. Its instructions apply to SteamTinkerLaunch setups, not to every mod arrangement.

If a game will not start through SteamTinkerLaunch, check that the Proton version configured in SteamTinkerLaunch is valid and that SteamTinkerLaunch is being used as the game’s compatibility tool as its documentation expects. Do not put the tool in the launch-options field when the setup requires it as the compatibility selection. Inspect the SteamTinkerLaunch log for a tool-specific failure before changing unrelated game settings. The project’s Troubleshooting page describes these checks.
Interpret a Mod Organizer 2 window problem narrowly
The project’s Mod Organizer 2 documentation records dialog problems that can occur in Game Mode and describes a workaround involving its Proton options and the Steam Linux Runtime. Use that workaround only when your symptom matches the documented Mod Organizer 2 hang or crash. A manager window that renders incorrectly is not evidence that an in-game shader, GPU setting, or every Proton title has the same fault.
Triage visual glitches by where they appear
“Visual glitch” covers several different failure classes. Identify the owner of the bad pixels before changing graphics settings.

Glitches during gameplay
For in-game performance or graphics trouble, Valve’s troubleshooting guidance suggests lowering the graphics preset or individual settings. Change one setting at a time and record the original value. Start with the setting most closely related to the symptom—such as resolution, effects, or post-processing—then test the same scene again. If disabling a mod removes the artifact while unchanged graphics settings do not, return to the mod isolation process rather than lowering every game option.

A launcher can fail independently of the running game. Test the base game without the mod manager, then test the launcher with the smallest mod set that reproduces the issue. Record whether the launcher reaches its menu, hangs before displaying it, or launches the game and fails afterward; these are different points in the launch chain.
Glitches in a manager window or overlay
Check whether the problem appears only in Game Mode, only in Desktop Mode, or in both. If it matches the Mod Organizer 2 behavior documented by SteamTinkerLaunch, follow that project’s Proton-options and Steam Linux Runtime workaround. Otherwise, keep the manager diagnosis separate from the game’s rendering diagnosis and inspect the manager’s log.
Run repeatable tests instead of one-off launches
A single successful start can be misleading when a crash occurs only after a particular menu, save, or load sequence. Use the same launch path, reach the same scene or menu, and note how many attempts succeed or fail. Stop a test when the original symptom clearly returns; do not add another setting change midway through that run.
Keep a short change ledger: date and time, one change made, result, and whether the original setting was restored. Mark configurations as “known good,” “fails before menu,” “fails after loading,” or “visual issue only.” This makes it easier to return to the last working combination and prevents repeatedly testing a configuration that has already been ruled out.

If a clean launch requires a different mod list, use a test save or another safe method rather than overwriting the only copy. The goal is to isolate the launch problem without turning a recoverable configuration issue into lost progress.
Separate a game-file problem from a launch-path problem
Compare three paths when they are available: the unmodded game launched directly through Steam, the game launched with its normal mod loader, and the manager or launcher opened by itself. A failure in all three paths points toward a broader title or system problem. A failure only through the manager points toward that tool or its configured compatibility path. A failure only after a particular mod is enabled points toward the mod or an interaction with another enabled change.

Do not use that comparison as proof of root cause. It is a way to choose the next reversible test. Keep the Proton selection unchanged while comparing paths, then change only the compatibility tool if the launch-path comparison leaves Proton as the remaining variable.
Capture a Proton log when the launch failure persists
When the controlled tests still leave a Proton launch problem, use Valve’s Proton FAQ procedure to generate evidence.

- Open the game’s Steam Properties and select General.
- Find Launch Options and enter exactly
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%. - Launch the game once so Proton can write the log.
- Remove the launch option after collecting the log unless support specifically asks you to keep it enabled.
- Include the log with the game title, SteamOS state, Proton version, mod manager or loader, recent changes, exact error text, and the steps that reproduce the failure.
That context matters: a log without the selected compatibility tool or recent mod change makes it harder for maintainers to distinguish a Proton issue from a manager or mod issue. If Valve’s general checks do not resolve the Deck problem, its guide points readers to Steam Deck discussions or Steam Support.
What to include in a support request
Write the report so another person can reproduce the test without guessing. State whether the base game launches, whether another Steam game launches, and whether the symptom is limited to Game Mode, Desktop Mode, the manager, or gameplay. Name the exact Proton selection, SteamTinkerLaunch or other loader version, mod manager, latest mod change, and Deck update state. Quote the complete error, not a shortened paraphrase.
List the tests already completed and their results: update and restart, third-party application disabled, newest mod disabled, full mod set disabled, alternate launch path, and any single Proton-version test. Attach a screenshot for a visual artifact and the Proton log for a continuing Proton launch failure. Avoid presenting a successful test with one configuration as a permanent fix until it survives a repeat launch.

Does “Error launching game, compatibility tool failed” prove Proton is broken?
No. It describes a failed launch stage, not a confirmed cause. The selected Proton tool, a mod loader, a manager, or changed game files can all be involved. Compare the base game, manager, and modded launch paths.
Should I force a different Proton version?
Use a different Steam Play compatibility tool only as a controlled test. Record the original setting, change one version, allow any required download to finish, and revert if the result worsens. A version that works for one title is not a universal fix.
