For a PlayStation-associated game running on a Windows PC, begin with the exact game, launcher, build, hardware, Windows version, graphics-driver version, and reproducible symptom. Then compare the computer with that title’s official requirements, apply reversible software checks, capture evidence, and only afterward investigate engine-specific causes such as GPU-memory exhaustion. “PS5-on-PC” describes a PlayStation game or project ported to PC; it does not mean a PS5 console is running a PC project.
The same procedure separates a crash to desktop from a freeze, graphical artifact, low frame rate, or intermittent stutter. Requirements, settings, support routes, and log locations vary by title, so a fix proven for one game should not be treated as a universal standard.
Define exactly what is failing
“It runs badly” is not enough information to choose a safe fix. Write down the symptom in concrete terms before changing settings. This prevents a driver problem, a network problem, and an overloaded GPU from being treated as the same fault.

The game process closes and Windows returns to the desktop. Record whether a message appears, whether the crash happens during launch, loading, a particular level, a cutscene, or after a repeatable action.

Freeze or lock-up
The image may stop while audio continues, or the entire computer may become unresponsive. Note how long you waited, whether Alt-Tab or Ctrl-Alt-Delete worked, and whether a forced restart was required.
Low frame rate
The game remains responsive but renders slowly. Record the location, graphics preset, display resolution, frame-rate target, and whether performance is consistently low or falls only in complex scenes.
Stutter
Stutter is uneven frame delivery: the average frame rate can look acceptable while movement repeatedly hitches. Note whether it occurs during traversal, shader compilation, loading, online play, or after changing windows.
Visual glitch or artifact
Look for flashing polygons, missing textures, corrupted shadows, colored blocks, flickering geometry, or an incorrect interface. Capture a screenshot or short recording if possible, and note whether the artifact appears in menus as well as in gameplay.
Connection-related symptom
Disconnects, matchmaking errors, delayed players, or server messages point toward connectivity or service availability rather than rendering performance. Record the exact wording and time.

Check the title-specific requirements first
Find the official PC requirements for the exact game and edition you own. PlayStation publishes different minimum hardware and operating-system requirements for individual PC titles, sometimes with separate performance targets. Do not use one game’s requirement as a universal standard for another.
Compare the listed CPU, GPU, video-memory (VRAM) requirement, system RAM, Windows version, storage requirement, and stated resolution or frame-rate target with your computer. Quantic Dream’s PC support likewise advises comparing the computer’s specifications with the game’s requirements; its guidance is publisher-specific, not a guarantee for every title.
- Record the game’s exact version and the storefront or launcher used.
- Record your CPU model, graphics processor, VRAM, installed RAM, free storage, Windows edition and version, monitor resolution, and display configuration.
- Record the installed graphics-driver version and the date the problem began.
- Note recent game patches, Windows updates, driver changes, new peripherals, or altered graphics settings.
If the computer is below a stated minimum, instability and poor performance may be expected. If it meets only minimum requirements, target the title’s lower resolution or frame-rate setting rather than assuming that a high preset is supported.
Apply reversible checks in a controlled order
Change one or two variables at a time and test the same save, area, or action after each change. Keep a short record of what changed and what happened; otherwise it is easy to lose the one useful clue among many simultaneous edits.
- Restart the game and Windows. Close the game normally if possible, restart Windows, and reproduce the issue once before making deeper changes.
- Install pending Windows updates. Use Windows Settings to check for updates, complete any required restart, and test again.
- Install a current graphics and device driver. Use the GPU and hardware manufacturer’s official driver package. Record the version before and after installation so a regression can be identified.
- Verify the game files. Run the file-verification or repair command in the launcher or storefront that installed the game. The exact menu wording differs by service; allow the process to finish before launching.
- Close unnecessary background software. Exit overlays, recording tools, browsers with heavy GPU use, virtual machines, and other applications you do not need for the test. Do not uninstall them merely because the game crashes.
- Check service and network status. For online symptoms, check the game publisher’s status information and your connection. A server outage cannot be repaired by lowering texture quality.
- Test the display configuration. PlayStation’s PC guidance suggests temporarily disabling SLI, where present, or unplugging extra displays, then restarting the game. Treat this as a diagnostic test, not proof that multi-GPU or multiple monitors caused the issue.
- Return altered settings to a known baseline. If the problem began after an overclock, undervolt, overlay change, mod, or custom graphics profile, restore the standard profile and retest.
These checks are low-risk because they do not require registry editing or deletion of project data. If a verification step replaces files, preserve save data separately according to the game’s support instructions before taking any action that could affect local data.

Use the symptom to choose the next branch

Capture crash evidence before repeated changes
A useful report lets support reproduce or classify the failure. Save the exact error message, screenshots, crash time, repeat steps, and a list of changes made since the last working session. Do not infer the cause from a phrase such as “GPU crash”; that wording alone does not establish whether the cause was memory pressure, a driver, an engine defect, or another component.

If the project uses Unreal Engine, Epic’s crash-reporting documentation says a report can include the crash type, call stacks, system and application context, and log output. For an editor crash, reports are stored in the project’s Saved/Crashes directory. Copy the relevant report before deleting caches or changing the project so the original evidence remains available.
Packaged games and other engines
A packaged game may place logs, minidumps, or reports in a title-specific folder, the Windows user profile, or a launcher-managed location. The location is not universal. Follow the game’s own support instructions rather than assuming that an Unreal folder exists. If no report is exposed, provide the error text, timestamp, game version, hardware and driver details, and exact reproduction steps.
Investigate an Unreal Engine GPU-memory failure
This section applies only when the project uses Unreal Engine and the evidence suggests graphics-memory pressure. Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.8 documentation recommends watching GPU memory in Windows Task Manager while reproducing the failure. Open Task Manager, view GPU activity and dedicated GPU memory, then perform the same action that causes the crash or severe hitch.
When usage approaches available memory
If dedicated GPU memory is close to its available capacity, reduce demand in a controlled sequence:

- Close other applications that consume GPU memory, including browsers playing video, recording tools, and other 3D programs.
- Simplify the scene or reduce the number and complexity of visible assets for the test.
- Use lower-resolution textures or meshes where the project permits it.
- Lower the display resolution or demanding effects and repeat the same reproduction step.
Change one category at a time and note whether the crash disappears, moves to a different location, or merely becomes less frequent. A successful lower-memory test supports a memory-pressure hypothesis; it does not prove that memory is the only defect.
Interpret GPU-crash wording carefully
GPU memory can be available while a driver or engine operation still fails. Keep the crash report, logs, and driver version even when lowering settings appears to help. A title-specific bug, unsupported feature, corrupted asset, or driver regression can produce similar symptoms.

Windows uses Timeout Detection and Recovery (TDR) to reset a graphics driver when a GPU operation takes too long. Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.8 documentation describes the default timeout as two seconds. A long shader compile, an overloaded scene, a driver problem, or an engine defect can therefore appear as a GPU timeout.
Epic discusses changing TDR-related registry values to give a graphics operation more time, but warns that registry changes can have unexpected consequences and will not resolve every crash. For a player, this is an advanced, conditional path—not the first troubleshooting step. Do not copy registry values from an unrelated guide, and do not edit the registry before preserving reports and confirming that the title actually uses Unreal Engine.

For a developer or technical artist, follow the current Unreal documentation for the engine version in use, document every value changed, create a restore point or equivalent recovery plan, and test whether the underlying workload can be reduced instead. A timeout adjustment may mask an excessive workload while leaving the asset, shader, driver, or engine problem intact.

Separate player troubleshooting from project development
Player-facing work
Players should focus on title requirements, updates, file verification, background applications, display tests, reproducible settings, and the game publisher’s support process. Avoid deleting project folders, changing registry values, or modifying packaged assets unless the title’s support team specifically instructs you to do so.
Developer or editor work
Developers should preserve the project’s crash report and logs, identify the exact editor or packaged-build version, monitor GPU memory during reproduction, and test a minimal scene or lower-memory asset set. Record each controlled change so a fix can be reviewed or reverted. Unreal-specific paths and GPU guidance do not automatically apply to projects built with another engine.
Build an escalation report that support can use
After the reversible checks, contact the game publisher or the support page for that specific title. PlayStation distinguishes game-issue support from purchase support: technical problems belong with the game or platform support route, while purchase problems should go to the PC retailer or storefront that handled the transaction.
Include:
- Game title, edition, version or build number, and launcher or storefront.
- CPU, GPU, VRAM, installed RAM, storage location, monitor configuration, Windows version, and graphics-driver version.
- The symptom category: crash, freeze, artifact, low frame rate, stutter, or connection error.
- Exact reproduction steps, including the level, save, menu, or action that triggers it.
- Date and time of failure, frequency, and whether another restart changes the result.
- Error text, screenshots or video, crash reports, logs, and the
Saved/Crashespath when applicable to an Unreal editor project. - Every troubleshooting change already tested and its result.
For some PlayStation PC titles, in-game crash reporting may be available. Use it when offered and attach the same concise information rather than submitting repeated reports with different descriptions.
Prevent confusion during future testing
- Keep a simple change log for driver updates, game patches, graphics presets, overclocks, overlays, and display changes.
- Use one repeatable save or route when comparing settings.
- Do not change resolution, driver, overlay, and engine configuration simultaneously; you will not know which change mattered.
- Keep original crash reports before clearing caches or reinstalling.
- Use the exact title’s requirements and support page, not a generic requirement copied from another PlayStation PC game.
- Treat a temporary improvement as evidence about a cause, not as proof that the cause has been permanently fixed.
When a hardware upgrade is actually justified
A GPU, RAM kit, SSD, or other component should be considered only after comparing the exact title’s requirements with the current machine and identifying a repeatable limitation. If the game’s listed VRAM or RAM requirement exceeds what is installed, or the computer cannot reach the stated target even after a clean software baseline, an upgrade may be reasonable. Without that title-specific diagnosis, buying hardware is speculation and may not address a driver, server, corrupted-file, or engine defect.
