Proton failures are easiest to fix when you first identify where the launch breaks, then collect evidence before changing settings. Record whether one game or several fail, enable a per-game Proton log with PROTON_LOG=1 %command%, and use the log to choose a narrowly targeted test. Graphics overrides, prefix changes, and package changes should be temporary, reversible experiments—not a list of settings to copy blindly.
Start by defining the failure
Do not begin by deleting a prefix or trying every Proton version. Preserve the current configuration and write down the facts while the failure is reproducible:
- Game title and Steam App ID.
- Linux distribution and version.
- GPU model, driver, and whether the computer uses integrated graphics, a discrete GPU, or PRIME/offload switching.
- Steam package source, such as a distribution package or Flatpak.
- Proton version selected for the game.
- Whether the problem started after a game, Proton, driver, Steam, or operating-system update.
- Exact symptom and timing: no process, a launcher that closes, a window that stays black, a crash after the launcher, or a freeze during play.
Launch a second Proton game if one is available. One failing title points you toward that game’s reports, media components, DRM, settings, or prefix. Several games failing at once points toward a shared Steam, runtime, graphics-driver, or packaging change. This comparison narrows the search; it does not prove a cause.

Use the failure stage to choose your first branch

Describe the failure in terms of a repeatable sequence: start Steam, press Play, wait for the launcher, select the game mode if applicable, and note the exact point where the process exits or the picture stops updating. Repeating the same sequence after one change is more informative than launching five times with different settings. If the symptom changes from an immediate exit to a black window, record that as a change rather than calling it a fix.

Generate a Proton log for one run
Valve’s normal guidance is to use the Proton build supplied through Steam unless a specific compatibility report gives you a reason to test another one. Proton logging is enabled per game and per run.
- Open Steam Library.
- Right-click the affected game and choose Properties.
- Stay on the General tab and find Launch Options.
- Enter
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%exactly, including the percent signs. - Close the Properties window and launch the game once. Reproduce the failure rather than repeatedly launching without recording what happened.
- Inspect
~/steam-<APPID>.login your home directory, replacing<APPID>with the game’s numeric Steam App ID.
If you want the file somewhere else, set PROTON_LOG_DIR in the launch option so Proton writes the log to that directory. Keep the directory writable and note its location when collecting evidence. The logging option is a runtime setting; removing it restores the previous launch behavior and does not permanently modify the Wine prefix.
After collecting the log, remove verbose diagnostic options unless you are actively testing them. Large logs make the relevant sequence harder to find and can obscure whether a later test changed the result.

Use that level of tracing only for the graphics question you are answering; it is not a universal launch fix.
If no Proton log appears, do not repeatedly add more variables at random. Confirm that the game actually started through Proton, that the launch option was entered for the affected title, and that the destination selected with PROTON_LOG_DIR is writable. Then inspect Steam’s own output and package-specific reports. A crash that happens before Proton initializes may leave useful evidence only at that earlier layer.
Read the log as a set of clues
Search the log for err:, warn:, error:, and relevant fixme: lines. Start with messages immediately before the process exits or the display stops updating, then compare them with the first successful or partially successful stage. A prefix can contain many harmless notices, so a line’s presence alone is not proof of the cause.
Startup, Steam2.dll, and DRM clues
The Proton troubleshooting checklist associates some startup failures with a Steam2.dll load warning and with CEG DRM. Treat these as directions for further investigation: check current reports for the same game, Proton build, and error signature before applying a workaround. The checklist was edited on September 29, 2020, so it is a historical set of signatures rather than an exhaustive description of current Proton behavior.

Video and cutscene clues
If the game reaches menus but a video is missing or the screen turns black when a cutscene should begin, look for references to Media Foundation components such as mfplat.dll, mfplay.dll, mfreadwrite.dll, or mfstartup.dll. Quartz, WMVcore, and XNA messages can provide similar context. Confirm that the error occurs at the same point each time and search for a current game-specific report; do not infer that every black screen is a media problem.
Audio clues
For silent audio, crashes when sound initializes, or a cutscene that plays without sound, XAudio2 DLL names in the log can identify the subsystem to investigate. Compare the timing with the symptom and test one change at a time so that an unrelated graphics setting does not hide the audio result.

How to treat fixme:
fixme: is a triage marker, not a verdict. Some messages are expected compatibility notices. Give priority to a message that appears only in the failing run, occurs directly before the failure, and matches the affected subsystem. Preserve the complete log when reporting so others can see the surrounding context.
Log order matters. A warning emitted during normal startup may be irrelevant if the game continues to a menu, while a new error immediately before a deterministic crash deserves attention. Compare two runs rather than deleting every line that looks alarming. If a suspected error appears in both a working and failing configuration, it is less persuasive than a line unique to the failing combination.

Investigate graphics and PRIME only when the evidence points there
A black screen, a freeze after a window appears, or unexpectedly low performance can result from the wrong GPU being selected on a PRIME or multi-GPU system. First determine which adapter Proton actually selected. The log produced with the graphics tracing options can show the device name or graphics path; record that value rather than guessing from the desktop’s displayed GPU.
Choose a device-specific test
Valve’s Proton 11.0 PRIME guide documents DXVK_FILTER_DEVICE_NAME for selecting a named device in applicable Vulkan-backed Direct3D paths. It also documents DRI_PRIME=1 and NVIDIA offload variables for particular hardware and driver arrangements. These variables are configuration-specific: use the instructions that match your GPU, driver, and display topology, and copy the exact device name reported by your system.
Add only one temporary override, launch the game, and record whether the selected adapter and symptom changed. If the override has no effect or produces a new failure, remove it before trying another path. Hardware-specific variables copied from an unrelated setup can force the wrong adapter or prevent the game from starting.
Test vsync in a PRIME freeze
Valve notes that in-game vsync is known to cause poor performance or freezes in some PRIME configurations. If your reproducible symptom is a PRIME-related freeze or severe performance problem, disable the game’s own vsync as a test. This is not a general remedy for black screens or crashes. Restore the original setting after the comparison if it does not explain the failure.
Do not combine a GPU-selection override, a vsync change, and a Proton-version switch in one experiment. If the game starts afterward, you will not know which change mattered, and you may leave an unnecessary override that causes trouble after a driver or game update.
Check the Steam library and per-game prefix
“Prefix not owned by you”
If Steam reports that the prefix is not owned by you, the Proton FAQ identifies a likely cause: the game library is on an NTFS partition whose ownership or mount configuration does not give your user account access. Inspect the ownership and mount settings for that specific library. Do not conclude that every NTFS library is unusable; the relevant question is whether the account running Steam can read and write the affected library and its compatibility data.
Understand what a prefix contains
Each game has a separate Proton prefix under that game’s Steam library, in a path shaped like steamapps/compatdata/<APPID>. The active library location can differ between installations, so locate the library shown in Steam’s storage settings rather than relying on one hard-coded path from an old guide.

A one-time launcher setting, stale configuration, or game-specific prefix state can explain why one title fails while other Proton games work. Before changing or removing compatdata:
- Back up local saves and configuration files.
- Check whether Steam Cloud synchronization has completed and whether the game stores saves outside the prefix.
- Record the current Proton version and launch options so you can recreate the test.
- Prefer changing the game’s setting or removing one known-bad configuration file over deleting the entire prefix.
Recreating a prefix can remove game state, custom settings, and locally stored saves. Treat it as a controlled recovery step only when the evidence implicates that game’s prefix.
A prefix change is especially weak evidence when several unrelated games fail simultaneously. In that situation, inspect the shared Steam package, runtime, or graphics path first. Conversely, if one title fails while another works from the same library, a per-game prefix or game-specific update becomes a more reasonable branch.
Separate Proton from the Steam packaging layer
Record how Steam was installed before deciding that Proton itself is at fault. A distribution package, Flatpak, and other packaging routes can provide different runtimes, permissions, library guards, and log locations. If Proton crashes before a useful Proton log is created, inspect Steam’s own logs and reports for the package you are using.
On February 2, 2026, a report described a Proton Experimental segmentation fault under Steam Flatpak. Valve contributors said the implicated shared-library-guard mechanism belonged to the unofficial Flatpak packaging and directed the issue to its maintainers. That incident is evidence that packaging can be a separate troubleshooting layer; it is not evidence that Flatpak generally causes Proton crashes. Do not disable a security or library guard as a blanket fix. Instead, compare the package-specific report, the installed Steam build, and a reproducible failing launch.

A package comparison is useful only if you can say what changed and whether the same failure stage occurs. Do not treat a successful launch from another package as proof that every permission or runtime difference is safe to copy back into the original installation.
Make each test reversible
Randomly changing several settings destroys the comparison that tells you what helped. Use a short test record:

This method distinguishes a real improvement from a change in timing. It also leaves you with a clean, known state for a report or for testing a newer Proton build later.
Keep the original log and the log from the changed run together, with clear filenames or notes. Include the date, because Proton, Steam, drivers, and games update frequently. A test that worked once but cannot be reproduced should be described as intermittent rather than as a confirmed fix.

When a Proton version change is reasonable
Proton version changes are useful comparisons when a current game report identifies a regression, a known workaround, or a version-specific behavior. They are less useful as the first response to an unexplained failure. Before switching, capture the failing log and note the current version. Test one alternate version, reproduce the same action, and compare the resulting log and symptom. If neither version works, revert to the version supplied by Steam and continue with the evidence from the failure stage, graphics path, prefix, or package layer.
Do not interpret a successful launch after switching versions as proof that the old version was universally broken. Record the exact game update, GPU, driver, and package source, since another configuration may behave differently. Remove obsolete launch overrides while comparing versions so that the comparison remains meaningful.
Search existing reports before escalating
Search the Proton issue list, including closed reports, using the game title, Proton version, GPU, and a distinctive error signature. A closed report may contain the workaround, regression range, or diagnostic detail that an open report lacks. Match the setup carefully: a report for a different GPU, driver, package source, or game update may not apply.
When no existing report explains the behavior, prepare one issue per report. Include:
- A short title describing the game and observable failure.
- Exact reproduction steps, including the point at which the screen goes black or the process exits.
- Distribution, kernel or driver information as appropriate, GPU, Steam package source, Proton version, and game App ID.
- The relevant Proton log and command-line output, with sensitive personal paths or identifiers removed where necessary.
- CrashIDs or minidumps when the game provides them.
- A comparison with a known-working configuration, such as another Proton version, another game, or a different GPU path.
- Every temporary launch option used and whether removing it restored the baseline.
Keep unrelated symptoms in separate reports. A focused report lets maintainers correlate the failure with other users instead of having to disentangle several independent problems.
If a report already exists, add a concise confirmation only when your configuration and reproduction match. Include differences that could explain a different result, such as a newer game build, another driver, a Flatpak installation, or a different selected GPU. Avoid posting a long unfiltered log without identifying the lines and timing that matter.

You have a useful diagnosis when you can state the scope, failure stage, reproducible steps, and the evidence that connects a subsystem to the symptom. For example: one game fails immediately, the log consistently shows a specific startup signature, another Proton game works, and a current report describes the same game and build. Or: several games began freezing after a graphics change, the log shows the wrong PRIME adapter, and a single device-selection test changes the result. If you cannot make that connection, keep the baseline intact, remove temporary overrides, and report the complete evidence rather than applying increasingly broad fixes.
A compact decision path
- One game or many? One usually warrants game-specific reports, media or DRM clues, and that title’s prefix. Many suggests a shared Steam, driver, runtime, or packaging change.
- Which stage fails? An immediate exit emphasizes startup and ownership evidence; a black cutscene emphasizes media clues; a later freeze emphasizes the selected GPU, vsync, and the last log messages.
- Is there a useful Proton log? If yes, correlate the last relevant lines with the symptom. If no, inspect Steam and package logs and verify the launch option and output directory.
- Does the setup use PRIME or multiple GPUs? If yes, verify the adapter in the log before trying a device-specific override.
- Does storage evidence implicate the prefix? Check ownership and back up saves before changing compatibility data.
- Can you reproduce one controlled change? Keep or report only changes whose result is repeatable and whose rollback is clear.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why will my game not launch with Proton?
First determine whether only that game fails and identify the exact failure stage. Capture a Proton log with PROTON_LOG=1 %command%, then check startup, DRM, prefix ownership, and current game reports instead of switching settings at random.
Where is the Proton log?
After one launch with logging enabled, Proton normally writes steam-<APPID>.log in your home directory. Set PROTON_LOG_DIR in the launch option when you need the file in another writable directory.

Are fixme: lines proof of the crash?
No. They are triage clues and can be harmless compatibility notices. Give more weight to lines unique to the failing run, close to the failure, and related to the affected subsystem.
How do I troubleshoot a black screen?
Note whether the black screen appears at launch, after a launcher, or at a cutscene. Check the selected GPU and graphics path, look for Media Foundation or related video clues, and investigate PRIME only when the hardware setup and log support that branch.
Should I delete the Proton prefix?
Only when evidence points to that game’s prefix. Back up local saves and configuration, verify Steam Cloud status, record your current settings, and prefer changing one known-bad file or setting before removing all of compatdata.

It can when the library or its compatibility data is not owned or writable by the user running Steam. Check ownership and mount configuration for the specific library; NTFS alone does not prove that every installation is broken.
Does Flatpak cause Proton crashes?
Packaging can be a separate layer to investigate. A February 2, 2026 incident involved Proton Experimental under Steam Flatpak and was directed to the unofficial package’s maintainers, but that single case does not show that Flatpak generally causes crashes.
Should I try a different Proton version first?

Preserve saves and the baseline, then report exact steps and logs when no existing issue explains the behavior.
