Start by isolating the signal path instead of changing several settings at once. Record the FPGA console model, hardware revision, firmware or core version, display chain, controller connection, and the exact symptom. Then test controller input, video, and audio independently. A Super Nt HDMI failure has a different documented procedure from a MiSTer core that renders a black screen, and neither procedure should automatically be applied to an Analogue Pocket or Mega Sg.
This guide uses model-specific checks for Analogue Super Nt, Analogue Pocket, Mega Sg, and MiSTer. Where a product’s documentation does not establish a setting or repair, the limitation is stated rather than guessed.
Begin with a controlled isolation sequence
Before unplugging anything, write down the setup as it currently works or fails. Include:
- Console and model revision, such as Super Nt, Pocket, Mega Sg, or a MiSTer build.
- System firmware, MiSTer FPGA core, and the date of the last update.
- Whether the symptom affects the main menu, every game, or only one cartridge or core.
- Controller type: wired USB, Bluetooth, a Retro Receiver, an original controller through an adapter, or an IO-board connection.
- Display path: direct HDMI, AV receiver, switch, scaler, dock, capture device, or another intermediary.
- Power supply, USB cable, HDMI cable, and any change made immediately before the fault.
Change one variable, retest, and record the result. If a direct connection works, add the removed device back one at a time. That turns a vague “the console is broken” report into evidence about a controller, cable, display, intermediary, configuration, or software component.

Controller does not respond, pairs unreliably, or maps incorrectly
Super Nt with an SN30 or Retro Receiver
For an SN30 that does not respond, fully charge the controller before attempting another pairing. A low charge can make a wireless fault look like a console fault.
When troubleshooting a Retro Receiver, pair only one controller at a time. The Super Nt troubleshooting guide specifically advises this isolation step. If pairing remains unreliable, install the latest receiver firmware using the current instructions for that receiver, then repeat the single-controller test. Do not pair multiple controllers while diagnosing; simultaneous pairing makes it difficult to identify which device is failing.
Use a known-compatible second controller only as an isolation test. If the second controller works, the result narrows the problem to the first controller, its battery, its pairing state, the receiver, or the controller’s compatibility. It does not prove which of those parts is defective.

MiSTer configuration is performed in stages. Plug the controller in with no core loaded and configure it from the main menu. Then launch the affected core and open its on-screen display (OSD) if that core needs additional mapping.
Different physical devices can present different VendorID/ProductID combinations. The MiSTer FAQ warns that changing between devices with different IDs may require configuration again. A controller that works in the menu can therefore still need mapping in a particular core, especially after replacing it with a different model.

- Connect one controller directly to MiSTer.
- From the main menu, open the input or controller configuration and assign the required buttons.
- Launch the target core and test its controls.
- If buttons are missing or incorrectly assigned, open that core’s OSD and configure its controls there.
- Save the mapping, then disconnect and reconnect the controller to confirm that the assignment persists.
For a fault that appears only in one core, first test the same controller in the menu and in another known-working core. That separates a general USB or controller issue from a core-specific mapping or compatibility issue.
Original controllers through MiSTer adapters
MiSTer supports original-console controllers through USB adapters, and the FAQ also describes direct connection through the IO board User port using SNAC. Compatibility depends on the controller family, adapter, core, and physical connection. Confirm that the adapter supports the console family and the core you intend to use before treating a failed mapping as a MiSTer hardware fault.

Wired versus wireless: what the test can establish
| Test path | What it isolates | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Known-compatible wired USB controller | Removes Bluetooth pairing and battery variables. | Does not rule out a bad USB port or core mapping. |
| Wireless controller with one receiver | Tests the pairing path and receiver firmware. | Battery charge, radio conditions, and receiver compatibility remain variables. |
| Original controller through USB adapter | Preserves the original layout while testing an adapter path. | Adapter and core support must match the console family. |
| SNAC through a MiSTer IO board User port | Tests a direct original-controller connection. | Requires compatible IO hardware and core support. |

Super Nt: follow the documented HDMI sequence
Analogue’s Super Nt guide assumes the console is connected by HDMI to a television and that the television is on while you test. Follow its sequence in this order:
- Confirm that the Super Nt is running current firmware.
- Try another HDMI cable. A spare cable is a diagnostic part, not a guaranteed repair.
- Try another electrical outlet.
- Disconnect the AV receiver, switch, scaler, or other intermediary and connect the Super Nt directly to the television.
- Reseat both ends of the HDMI cable.
- Use the included power supply rather than an unverified replacement.
- Check that the television is on the selected HDMI input. Analogue’s wording is: “Make sure your TV is in the right mode (HDMI 1, HDMI 2 etc).”
If direct HDMI works, reconnect the receiver or other intermediary, then each remaining device, one at a time. The device that reintroduces the failure is the next component to investigate. These are Super Nt instructions; they are not a universal power or video checklist for every FPGA console.

MiSTer: when other cores work but one is black
A black screen confined to one MiSTer core can be a display-mode problem rather than a dead console. The MiSTer FAQ suggests trying vsync_adjust=0 when one core produces a black screen because the display may not support that core’s refresh rate. Treat this as a diagnostic setting, not a guaranteed fix.
Test the setting by editing the relevant MiSTer INI configuration, launching the affected core, and noting whether the picture appears. If the change has no effect, restore the previous value before trying another variable. A core that remains black while the main menu and other cores work points toward its video mode, core configuration, or display compatibility; it does not by itself identify which one.
MiSTer scaling, range, and direct-video settings
MiSTer’s INI settings expose several independent video controls:
vscale_modecontrols vertical scaling behavior.vscale_bordercontrols the border behavior associated with scaling.hdmi_limitedselects limited HDMI color range when enabled.direct_videoenables direct-video output where the connected adapter chipset supports it.
These settings affect how a signal is generated or interpreted; they do not replace a failed cable or incompatible display. Change one value at a time, keep a copy of the working INI file, and ensure you have a way to edit or restore it if a setting prevents a picture.
Do not copy MiSTer INI names into an Analogue product’s menu. Super Nt, Pocket, and Mega Sg use their own firmware and support procedures.

Display-path comparison
| Path | Best use during diagnosis | What it can reveal |
|---|---|---|
| Console directly to TV or monitor by HDMI | First isolation path for Super Nt. | Removes receiver, switch, scaler, and dock compatibility variables. |
| Through an AV receiver or switch | Normal-use path after direct video works. | Can expose handshake, input-selection, or format problems. |
| Through a scaler or capture device | Useful only after a direct picture is established. | Adds another device that may reject a refresh rate or color range. |
| MiSTer direct video | Only when the adapter chipset supports the documented mode. | Tests a specialized output path, not a general HDMI replacement. |
Picture works but HDMI audio is missing or wrong
Check MiSTer’s DVI mode first
MiSTer’s INI documentation states that dvi_mode enables DVI mode over HDMI and disables audio transmission over HDMI when turned on. If video is present but HDMI audio is absent, inspect this value before assuming that the console, television, or cable has failed.
Turn off DVI mode for an HDMI-audio test, save the configuration, and restart the affected setup. If audio returns, the transport mode explains the symptom. If it does not, continue with the signal-path checks below.
Verify the sampling-rate setting only when symptoms suggest it
MiSTer documents HDMI audio at 48 kHz by default and an optional 96 kHz setting. The documentation notes that changing the rate can help with systems that use unusual sampling rates. Do not make this the first change for every audio complaint: establish whether audio is being transmitted at all, then investigate a sampling mismatch if the symptom is intermittent, distorted, or limited to a system with unusual audio behavior.
Bypass intermediaries, then rebuild the chain
Connect the console directly to the display and test audio. This is a signal-path isolation method; Analogue’s Super Nt documentation specifically recommends direct-TV testing for video, not a universal audio repair. If direct connection restores sound, reconnect the AV receiver, switch, scaler, or dock one at a time and verify its input and audio settings.

For Super Nt, Pocket, and Mega Sg, use the model’s own manual for audio configuration. MiSTer’s dvi_mode, 48 kHz default, and optional 96 kHz setting must not be presented as Analogue settings.

Cartridge problems that look like a console failure
On Super Nt, a cartridge that fails to boot or behaves inconsistently can be caused by dirty or oxidized cartridge contacts. Analogue recommends cleaning the cartridge pins with 90% or higher rubbing alcohol and cotton swabs, allowing the contacts to dry, then reseating the cartridge straight and fully.
- Power the Super Nt down.
- Apply 90%+ rubbing alcohol to a cotton swab, not directly to the cartridge.
- Wipe the cartridge contacts gently until visible residue is removed.
- Allow the contacts to dry completely.
- Insert the cartridge straight and fully, then retest.
This procedure applies to the cited Super Nt cartridge-contact symptoms. It is not a treatment for a nonresponsive controller, missing HDMI audio, or a MiSTer black screen. Avoid repeatedly inserting a visibly damaged cartridge while you are diagnosing the console.
What the available product documentation does—and does not—establish
Analogue Pocket
Analogue’s Pocket support resources include troubleshooting headings for game errors, SD-card insertion, third-party power supplies and USB cables, and save states. The available material does not provide detailed procedures for those headings here. Do not transfer the Super Nt power-supply or HDMI sequence to Pocket without checking Pocket’s current manual and support page.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The Pocket support listing identifies a manual dated April 18, 2024. That date identifies the listed document; it does not prove that every Pocket unit has identical firmware or accessories.
Mega Sg
The Mega Sg support listing identifies firmware v4.9 dated May 4, 2023, and a manual dated December 8, 2021. Its support questions include video lag, controller lag, television compatibility, and whether Mega Sg with Sega CD/Mega CD outputs stereo audio through HDMI. The available material does not expose the answers, so no universal setting or timing claim should be inferred from another console’s documentation.
If a Mega Sg has a symptom in one of those categories, record its firmware and consult the Mega Sg manual or current support page. A Super Nt cable, power, or menu procedure may be a useful general isolation idea, but it is not established as a Mega Sg-specific fix by the information available here.
A decision tree for common symptoms
The menu and every game are black
- Check power, HDMI seating, selected display input, and the direct-to-display path.
- For Super Nt, use the documented firmware, cable, outlet, included-power-supply, and direct-TV sequence.
- For MiSTer, verify whether the menu itself appears before changing core settings.
- If no device produces a picture through a known-good direct path, stop changing core options and investigate power, cable, display, or hardware service.
The menu works but one MiSTer core is black
- Confirm the core version and whether the display rejects its refresh rate.
- Try
vsync_adjust=0. - Review scaling and color-range settings one at a time, retaining a restorable INI copy.
- Do not conclude that the MiSTer board has failed while other cores remain functional.
Video works but there is no HDMI sound
- Check MiSTer’s
dvi_mode; enabled DVI mode disables HDMI audio transmission. - Keep the documented 48 kHz default unless symptoms point to a sampling-rate issue; test 96 kHz only when appropriate.
- Bypass receivers, switches, and scalers, then add them back individually.
- For Analogue products, use that model’s audio documentation rather than MiSTer settings.
Only one controller fails
- Charge a wireless controller fully.
- Pair one controller at a time with a Retro Receiver and update receiver firmware.
- On MiSTer, test the controller in the main menu, then configure it in the core OSD if required.
- Check whether a different device ID or adapter requires a new mapping.
When to stop troubleshooting and seek hardware support
Escalate after you have documented the model, firmware or core, exact symptom, and results from a direct display path and a known-compatible controller. Include whether the menu works, whether another core or cartridge works, and which single change altered the result. Avoid repeated firmware changes, random INI edits, or unverified power supplies that make the original state harder to reconstruct.
