Start by identifying the failure: sign-in, missing resources, a failed remote connection, poor performance, or the Windows App itself refusing to open. Those symptoms have different causes and owners. Check internet access, update Windows App, and compare with the browser client for connection problems. Use service-specific diagnostics for Windows 365 and Microsoft Dev Box, and repair or reinstall the local client only when the local app is the part that is broken.
This guide uses “Windows App” to mean Microsoft’s remote-access client, not Windows applications in general. Windows App connects to remote devices and hosted apps from Windows, macOS, iOS/iPadOS, Android, Chrome OS, or a web browser, depending on the service and platform. Microsoft’s current troubleshooting documentation covers Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, Microsoft Dev Box, Remote Desktop Services, and related remote-PC scenarios; availability and limitations can change with client releases. See Microsoft’s basic troubleshooting guide and known-issues list for the latest platform details.
Find the failure category before changing anything
Do not begin by reinstalling Windows App. First reproduce the symptom and classify it. The distinction determines whether you, your organization administrator, the network, or Microsoft’s service is most likely responsible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| What you see | Likely area | First action |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot sign in or your password is rejected | Account, password, or authentication policy | Use your organization’s password-change and sign-in process; contact the administrator if access remains blocked. |
| You sign in but see no desktops or apps | Administrator provisioning or service assignment | Read the exact message and ask the administrator to verify that a resource was assigned. |
| A resource appears, but the session will not start or disconnects | Internet path, client currency, service health, or remote resource | Check internet access, update Windows App, compare with the browser client, then run the diagnostic for the service. |
| The session opens but is slow, blurry, or repeatedly drops | Latency, network quality, device load, or service-side conditions | Check the service’s connection measurement and capture when and where the degradation occurs. |
| Windows App will not open or crashes locally | Local installation, app state, Windows updates, or a platform-specific bug | Install Windows updates, then use Windows Settings to repair or reset the app when those options are available. |
Microsoft’s troubleshooting page groups “trouble connecting” and an empty device or app list as separate checks from a client that is not working correctly. Following that order avoids treating an administrator-side problem as a software-installation problem.

Fix sign-in, password, and account problems
When authentication fails
Windows App uses an existing work, school, or other service account; it does not administer that account or provide its password-recovery process. If your password recently changed, follow the password-change instructions supplied by your organization. A successful password change may also require signing out of other sessions and signing in again, according to your organization’s policy. If the new password is rejected, multifactor authentication does not complete, or the account is locked, contact the administrator rather than repeatedly reinstalling the client. Microsoft describes this account boundary in its basic troubleshooting guidance.
When the account is valid but resources are absent
Signing in successfully does not guarantee that a desktop or application has been assigned to you. If the app says:
“It appears that your system administrator has not yet configured any resources for
<username>. Please choose another account or try again. If you believe you have received this message in error, please contact your system administrator.”Recommended Free Tools
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Microsoft says this means no resources have been configured for that user. Ask the organization administrator to verify the account, group membership, workspace or feed assignment, and the service’s provisioning state. Trying another reinstall, resetting app data, or changing a local Windows setting will not create a missing assignment. Include the exact username and message when you report it.
Resolve a failed connection or an empty resource list
Run the three basic checks
- Verify internet access. Open a normal website from the same device and network. If other services also fail, resolve the network or captive-portal issue first.
- Update Windows App. Install the current update offered for your platform. Microsoft’s instructions and supported installation methods differ by operating system.
- Compare with the browser client. Sign in to the web version of the same service, when that service provides one. If the browser works while the native app fails, the problem is more likely local to the app or its platform. If both fail, the account, assignment, network, or remote service remains suspect.
This sequence is Microsoft’s recommended starting point for trouble connecting or for not seeing devices and apps from Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, Microsoft Dev Box, or Remote Desktop Services. It is a diagnostic comparison, not a promise that every service supports every client on every device; check the service and platform requirements in the official troubleshooting article.
Use the diagnostic exposed by the service
| Service | Where to look | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 365 | Select the Cloud PC and choose Inspect connection, when shown. | Connection information that can help distinguish a network path problem from a Cloud PC issue. |
| Microsoft Dev Box | Select the Dev Box and choose Troubleshoot & repair, when available. | Service-provided repair and diagnostic actions for that Dev Box. |
| Azure Virtual Desktop | Check the estimated connection round-trip time from your location. | An indication of latency between your device and the remote service; higher latency generally makes interactive work feel less responsive. |
These controls are service-specific. Do not expect an Azure Virtual Desktop round-trip measurement, a Windows 365 inspection panel, or a Dev Box repair command to appear for every resource type. If the diagnostic reports a service or administrator condition, send the result to the person who manages the environment.
Diagnose disconnects, lag, and poor session quality
Separate latency from a complete outage
A session that opens but feels delayed is different from a session that never starts. Note whether typing, pointer movement, audio, video, or window redraw is affected, and whether the problem happens only on one network or at a predictable time. For Azure Virtual Desktop, record the estimated round-trip time shown for your location. A comparison from another network or the browser client can reveal whether the issue follows the device, network, or service.
Capture useful escalation details
- The operating system and platform used for Windows App: Windows, macOS, iOS/iPadOS, Android, Chrome OS, or web.
- The service and resource type: Windows 365 Cloud PC, Microsoft Dev Box, Azure Virtual Desktop, Remote Desktop Services, or a direct remote PC.
- The exact error text, including whether the failure occurs before or after authentication.
- The date and approximate time, your network type, and whether other internet services worked.
- Whether Windows App is current and whether the browser client behaves differently.
- Any round-trip-time result or service diagnostic output that the client displays.
This information is practical context for the administrator. Microsoft’s documentation tells users to contact the administrator when the app still does not work correctly; it does not prescribe a universal support-ticket format. Avoid including passwords or authentication codes in a report.
Repair Windows App when the local app is broken
Install Windows updates for crashes
Microsoft documents a crash scenario associated with urlmon.dll and directs affected users to install the latest Windows Updates. If Windows App closes immediately, crashes while opening a link, or fails before you can sign in, bring Windows up to date before attempting more disruptive recovery. Restart after updates and test the app again. The current Windows App article also has special installation and connectivity notes for Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019 clients, including systems without Microsoft Store; framework dependency versions can change, so use the live article rather than copying an old version number.
Use Repair before Reset in Windows Settings
For a Windows installation that opens incorrectly or retains bad local state, Microsoft’s Windows repair procedure is:
Rank #3
- Open Settings.
- Choose Apps, then Installed apps (the label may differ slightly by Windows release).
- Find Windows App, open its Advanced options, and look for the recovery controls.
- Select Repair first and test the app.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset and test again.
Not every Windows app exposes Repair or Reset. Microsoft’s repair instructions state that availability depends on the app. Reset is more disruptive because it removes the app’s local state; you may need to sign in again or restore client preferences. Resetting cannot fix an unprovisioned account or a remote service outage.

Reinstall only after local repair fails
If the client remains unusable after Windows updates and the available repair/reset controls, uninstall and install Windows App again using the supported method for your platform. Record the service and account details first so you can sign back in. If the app still fails after a clean installation, compare with the browser client and escalate with the context listed above instead of repeating the same reinstall.
Platform-specific limitations and workarounds
Microsoft maintains a changing list of known issues and limitations by platform. The following examples are documented behaviors, not a complete permanent list. Check the live known-issues page for the platform and service you actually use.
Windows
- Windows App’s own interface cannot reset its user data. Use Windows Settings and the app’s Advanced options instead.
- Some service connection limitations are listed separately from general client behavior; a missing feature may be a documented service limitation rather than a broken installation.
- Remote PC connections to Windows Server 2019 and later do not support camera and microphone redirection, according to Microsoft’s known-issues documentation. If the session otherwise works but those devices are absent, treat it as a compatibility limitation.
macOS
Keyboard shortcuts can behave differently with non-English or mismatched keyboard layouts. Test the physical and selected layout on the Mac before assuming that a remote application is ignoring a shortcut. Microsoft also documents macOS-specific update and media-device behavior on its known-issues page.
iPhone and iPad
Camera use may require stopping and restarting camera access or changing cameras. Microsoft also lists device-size and preview constraints. If video is missing, test the alternate camera and restart camera use before reinstalling the app.

Supported external identity sign-in options are constrained by the platform and service. An identity provider that works on Windows or macOS may not be available in the Android or Chrome OS client. Confirm the supported sign-in method in the current platform documentation and ask the administrator whether another supported client is available.
Web browsers
Web access has its own browser, service, and device combinations. Safari on the web client does not support keyboard shortcuts, and using the web client on phones or tablets can produce unexpected behavior. The native mobile app is a separate option when the service supports it. Use a supported desktop browser for a diagnostic comparison before concluding that the remote resource itself is broken.
Check whether the remote PC meets the host requirement
For Microsoft’s direct Remote Desktop scenario, the computer being controlled remotely must run Windows Pro. The device initiating the connection can run Windows Home or Pro, or another operating system. This host-versus-client distinction comes from Microsoft’s How to use Remote Desktop guidance and applies to that remote-PC setup; hosted services such as Windows 365 and Azure Virtual Desktop have their own eligibility and administrator requirements.

If the failure extends beyond Windows App—for example, Windows networking, Store installation, or a system component is malfunctioning—Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooters provide Get Help diagnostics for supported Windows problems. Run them for the underlying Windows symptom, not as a substitute for checking account assignment or service provisioning. A Windows troubleshooter cannot grant a Cloud PC, repair an administrator’s workspace assignment, or change a remote service policy.

When local recovery is necessary, progress from reversible checks to disruptive changes:
Best Value
- Confirm the symptom and capture the exact error.
- Check internet access and try the browser client.
- Update Windows App and Windows itself.
- Use a service diagnostic such as Inspect connection or Troubleshoot & repair when the service provides it.
- On Windows, choose Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Windows App > Advanced options > Repair.
- Use Reset only if Repair fails and you are prepared to sign in again or lose local app state.
- Uninstall and reinstall the client if the local installation remains damaged.
- Contact the administrator for persistent sign-in, missing-resource, connection, performance, or service-assignment problems.
Microsoft’s Windows recovery guidance also emphasizes choosing the least-disruptive option and considering data-loss consequences. For Windows App, that means avoiding Reset or reinstall until basic connectivity, account, and provisioning checks are complete.
What to include when you escalate
Send one concise report rather than a series of unexplained screenshots. State the platform, Windows App service, resource name or type, exact error, and the point at which the process fails. Add whether the app is updated, whether the browser client works, the approximate time of failure, and any round-trip-time or service-diagnostic result. Tell the administrator whether the problem affects one account or multiple users if you know that information. Do not send your password, multifactor code, or private recovery information.
If the issue is a “no resources configured” message, lead with that exact wording because it points to provisioning. If the local app will not launch, say whether Windows updates and Repair changed the behavior. If the session is slow or disconnects, include the network context and timing. This lets the administrator distinguish account, assignment, network, client, and service paths without asking you to repeat every preliminary test.
When the problem is not fixable on the device
Some failures are expected limitations rather than repairable defects: unsupported camera or microphone redirection for the documented Windows Server scenario, browser shortcut restrictions, mobile preview constraints, or an identity sign-in method unavailable on a particular platform. Others require administrator action, including an unassigned resource, a disabled account, a service-side repair, or a policy that blocks a connection. Once the basic client and network checks are complete, continuing to reset the app is unlikely to help; use the appropriate administrator or service-support path.
