Start by matching the symptom to your exact ASUS model and Windows version, then try reversible checks before changing BIOS settings or resetting Windows. Confirm the charger and port, clear blocked vents, disconnect peripherals during freezes, and use MyASUS or UEFI diagnostics when your hardware supports them. A fault that remains visible in BIOS, or a failed fan test, is evidence for authorized service rather than more software tweaks.
Identify the symptom and exact laptop before changing anything
ASUS troubleshooting is model-dependent. The same-looking problem can have different causes on a VivoBook, Zenbook, ExpertBook, gaming model or ProArt system, and menus differ between Windows 10 and Windows 11. Write down the full model name or number (including any suffix), installed Windows edition and version, and when the fault began.
- Power and charging: the laptop will not start, charges slowly, or loses battery percentage while plugged in.
- Heat and fan: the chassis is hot, the fan is loud, or the fan appears not to run.
- Internal display: flickering, blur, lines, distortion, a blank panel or a black screen after power-on.
- Keyboard: keys do nothing, repeat, lag, produce numbers unexpectedly or behave intermittently.
- Windows stability: freezes, crashes, or an unresponsive black or white screen while Windows is running.
Use the symptom-specific ASUS support article and the manual for your exact model for BIOS keys, port capabilities, recovery options and service arrangements. Do not infer a replacement charger, battery, fan or display part from a similar-looking model.

- Save what you can. If Windows still responds, save open work and copy important files before updates, restore operations or a reset.
- Record recent changes. Note a new driver, application, Windows update, BIOS update, spill, drop or accessory. A problem that began immediately after a change may be reversible by removing or rolling back that change.
- Remove external variables. Unplug docks, USB devices, memory cards, external monitors and other peripherals when investigating freezes, boot problems or unusual input.
- Check physical basics. Reseat the power adapter, inspect the cable and connector, put the computer on a firm flat surface, and keep every ventilation opening clear.
- Update only with model-correct packages. Use the ASUS support page for the exact model for BIOS, Windows packages and drivers. Follow ASUS’s own BIOS procedure; do not apply a generic BIOS file or interrupt power during an update.
- Run supported diagnostics. MyASUS tests and, on eligible systems, UEFI BIOS System Diagnostics can separate a software symptom from a component fault.
- Escalate on hardware evidence. A failed fan test or a display defect that is also present in BIOS should be handled by an authorized repair center.
Which troubleshooting method should you choose?
| Action | Best symptom match | Can Windows be unavailable? | Reversible? | Availability and evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Physical and connection checks | Charging, heat, peripherals, sudden freezes | Yes | Yes | Available on every model; finds blocked airflow, loose connections and accessory conflicts. |
| Windows or driver update/rollback | Display, keyboard, freezes, charging behavior | No | Usually; rollback depends on Windows retaining the prior driver | Use packages for the exact model and Windows version; especially relevant after a recent update. |
| MyASUS System Diagnosis | Battery, adapter, memory, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, storage, fan, keyboard, touchpad, display and USB | No | Yes | Individual checks and the System Diagnosis tab vary by model. |
| UEFI BIOS System Diagnostics | Hardware checks when Windows will not run | Yes | Yes | ASUS states eligibility for Intel 12th-generation-or-later or AMD Ryzen 6000-series-or-later laptops; regional services vary. |
| Restore point or PC reset | Persistent keyboard or Windows software faults | Partly; recovery environment may be required | Restore point generally; reset can remove apps and affect files | Back up personal files first. Treat reset as a later step, not a first response. |
| Authorized service | Failed fan test, physical damage, display fault visible in BIOS | Not required | No; technician evaluation is needed | Availability and warranty options depend on country and model. |
Why is my ASUS laptop not charging?
Check the adapter, cord and charging port
Turn the laptop off if practical, then push the adapter firmly into the wall outlet and laptop. Inspect the cable, plug and connector for fraying, bent parts, looseness or heat damage. ASUS recommends its original adapter to avoid compatibility problems. A third-party adapter can have the wrong voltage, wattage or USB Power Delivery profile even when its plug fits.

Do not assume USB-C means charging is supported. Some USB-C ports carry data or display signals only. Consult the model manual for the port that accepts power and the required adapter specification. Never force a connector or continue using a visibly damaged power supply.
Separate slow charging from a battery fault
Demanding applications can consume power nearly as quickly as the adapter supplies it. Close games, video exports, virtual machines and other heavy workloads, then observe whether the charge rate improves. ASUS suggests comparing charging time in Windows Safe Mode with normal operation: a substantial difference points toward software or workload consumption rather than automatically proving a defective battery.
Apply ASUS’s software sequence
- Install current BIOS, Windows updates and model-specific drivers from ASUS support.
- If ASUS documentation for your model permits it, load BIOS defaults or perform the documented BIOS reset. Do not guess a key combination or procedure.
- Open MyASUS and run the battery or adapter diagnosis when those checks are available.
If the adapter test fails, the battery diagnosis reports a fault, the connector is physically damaged or the laptop remains unresponsive with a known-good, correctly specified adapter, stop buying parts based on appearance alone. Record the model and test result for ASUS service.
Why is my ASUS laptop overheating or the fan so loud?
Understand normal fan behavior
Gaming, editing, conversion and other sustained CPU/GPU work raise internal temperature; the control system responds by increasing fan speed and noise. A fan may remain off below its activation threshold. Some ASUS models use passive cooling and have no fan at all, so check the model’s vent design before treating silence as a failure.

- Charge with Speed Vivobook 17 supports fast charging which allows you to charge a low battery to 60% in as little as 49 minutes, so you can be up and running quicker than ever!
ASUS Global Support describes the mechanism this way: “The device’s fan contributes to air circulation, maintaining a stable and safe internal temperature for operation.” Its overheating guidance lists an ambient operating range of 5°C to 35°C (41°F to 95°F), while advising owners to follow the product manual for their model.
Restore airflow safely
- Place the laptop on a firm, flat surface rather than bedding, clothing or a lap that covers intake openings.
- Keep clearance around every intake and exhaust. Exhaust may be on the sides or concealed near the screen hinge.
- Look for dust, hair or debris at the vents; do not push debris deeper into the chassis.
- An optional laptop stand or cooling pad can elevate the computer and reduce direct contact with a surface, but it is not a repair for a damaged fan and must not block vents.
Choose the correct performance control
Fan-mode controls vary. MyASUS may expose fan profiles on supported models. ROG and TUF gaming systems use Armoury Crate for their performance and fan settings, while ProArt models use ProArt Creator Hub. If the control is absent, that does not indicate a missing driver; the model may simply not support that feature.
Know when heat indicates service
Shut down if the case becomes dangerously hot, the system repeatedly powers off, or you smell burning. Run MyASUS fan diagnosis if offered. ASUS recommends service when that test reports a fan failure. Software profiles cannot repair a seized, obstructed or electrically failed fan.
Why is my ASUS laptop screen flickering, blurry, distorted or black?
First distinguish boot-time black from an abnormal display in Windows
A panel that is black immediately after pressing the power button is a different branch from flicker or distortion that begins after Windows loads. Note whether power lights, keyboard backlighting or an external display show that the computer is running, and disconnect external monitors and docks while testing.

Use BIOS as a hardware boundary test
Enter BIOS using the key specified in the manual for your exact model. If the same lines, flicker, blur or blank image appear in BIOS, ASUS says the internal screen hardware may be defective and recommends an authorized repair center. Software changes are unlikely to correct a panel, cable or board fault that exists before Windows starts.
If BIOS appears normal, investigate Windows and graphics software. Install the graphics driver from the ASUS support page for the exact model where appropriate, and consider rolling back a driver or update if the fault began immediately afterward. Avoid mixing generic packages with an ASUS-specific graphics implementation unless the model documentation supports it.
Why is my ASUS laptop keyboard not working?
Classify the key behavior
- No response from some or all keys: test after restarting and disconnecting external keyboards; then update Windows and the model’s drivers.
- Characters appear after a delay: check whether Windows Filter Keys is enabled and disable it if you did not intend to use it.
- Repeated characters: adjust key-repeat delay and repeat rate in Windows keyboard settings.
- Letters produce number-pad characters: check NumLock; embedded number-pad behavior differs by model.
Repair the software path
- Install pending Windows and ASUS driver updates.
- In Windows, reinstall the keyboard device through Device Manager if the ASUS procedure for your model calls for it, then restart.
- Run the Windows keyboard troubleshooter.
- For a problem that began recently, use a restore point that predates the change.
Use MyASUS keyboard diagnosis when present. A spill, broken key mechanism, intermittent connection or failure that remains outside Windows needs physical inspection. ASUS places PC reset after these earlier steps; back up personal files before using reset because it can remove applications and change settings.
Why does my ASUS laptop keep freezing, crashing or showing a black/white screen?
Recover from an unresponsive session
Disconnect external peripherals first. If the screen and input remain unresponsive, hold the power button until the indicator turns off, then restart. This forced shutdown can lose unsaved work, so use it only when normal shutdown is impossible.

Work through software and heat causes
- Install BIOS, Windows and model-specific driver updates.
- Run MyASUS hardware diagnosis if your model provides it.
- Check whether the chassis is unusually hot or performance drops under load; high internal temperature can reduce performance and contribute to instability.
- If the freeze began after a driver, application or Windows update, remove the application or roll back the driver/update using the supported Windows path.
- Reconnect peripherals one at a time after stability returns to identify an accessory conflict.
Repeated crashes before Windows loads, diagnostic failures or visible physical damage shift the case toward service rather than repeated resets.

MyASUS
On supported models, MyASUS’s System Diagnosis area can test the adapter, memory, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, HDD/SSD, battery, fan, keyboard, touchpad, display and USB. The tab and individual checks vary by model. Record the exact test name, result and any error code; a “pass” does not prove every intermittent fault is absent.
MyASUS guidance also warns that Windows Update can trigger a BitLocker recovery-key prompt. Before a major update, save the recovery key or follow ASUS’s documented BitLocker preparation procedure. Without the key, an otherwise valid update can leave you unable to unlock the drive.

UEFI BIOS System Diagnostics
UEFI diagnostics are useful when Windows cannot start. ASUS’s compatibility statement, updated 2024-06-17, covers laptops with Intel 12th-generation-or-later processors or AMD Ryzen 6000-series-or-later processors; regional service availability varies. If the feature is absent, that is not evidence of a fault—your model may not meet the eligibility requirements.

Use the exact model manual or ASUS support instructions to open the diagnostic environment and interpret results. Do not substitute a BIOS update, firmware reset or component replacement for a documented diagnostic step.
Protect data before restore or reset
A restore point can reverse a recent driver or application change, but it does not replace a file backup. A PC reset is more disruptive: depending on the option selected, applications are removed and settings or personal data can be affected. Copy personal files to a separate location and ensure you can sign in to required accounts before proceeding. If BitLocker is enabled, keep the recovery key available.
When Windows will not boot, use another device to retrieve account and recovery information before authorizing a reset or service. Tell a technician about backups, encryption and any data that must not be erased.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOther ASUS laptop symptoms
ASUS’s laptop FAQ index includes separate guidance for Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Bluetooth, storage (HDD/SSD), sound, camera and other functions. Those procedures can depend on the wireless card, storage type, Windows build and model firmware. Select the matching official article and manual rather than applying an unverified sequence from a different ASUS family.
When to stop troubleshooting and request service
- MyASUS reports a fan failure.
- The internal display fault is visible in BIOS.
- The laptop, adapter or port has liquid, impact, burning smell, swelling or exposed damage.
- A correctly specified original adapter and connection checks do not resolve charging, or battery/adapter diagnostics fail.
- Crashes continue after model-correct updates and removal of a suspected peripheral or recent software change.
Service options, warranty terms and authorized-center availability vary by country. Provide the exact model, serial information requested by ASUS, Windows version, symptom timeline and diagnostic results. This gives the technician evidence without assuming that a generic fix applies.
