The message means Codex stopped receiving a response before it saw the task complete. It does not, by itself, tell you whether the cause was your network, an OpenAI service issue, a particular conversation, or a custom-provider setup. Retry once, save the request ID if shown, then narrow down where the failure occurs before changing your setup.

What the error tells you—and what it does not

“Stream disconnected before completion” describes an interrupted response stream: the client did not observe a completed result. Users have reported the wording in Codex desktop, CLI, and the VS Code extension, but the message alone is not a diagnosis of the underlying cause. Examples include different circumstances and should not be treated as one confirmed failure mode.

One Codex desktop report quoted this instruction: “You can retry your request, or contact us through our help center at help.openai.com if the error persists. Please include the request ID ec79568e-8bfd-4516-8b38-519f9f6a6b8e in your message.” That identifier belongs to the example report; use the request ID shown in your own error, not the example ID.

What to do first

  1. Retry once and save the details. If the error shows a request ID, copy it. Note the approximate time, the Codex surface (desktop, CLI, or VS Code extension), its version, your operating system, and whether the error happens repeatedly. The quoted desktop message specifically directs users to retry and contact the Help Center if the error persists.
  2. Check whether it is limited to one conversation. Record whether the error affects an existing or resumed thread, new conversations, or both. If you can do so without risking useful work, compare with a new conversation. A desktop user reported that a new session initially worked while follow-up prompts often failed; that pattern is a diagnostic clue, not proof that a new thread fixes the problem.
  3. Preserve local work before changing context. If an older or resumed CLI thread is affected, save any useful output or local changes before testing a fresh conversation. A fresh thread can help show whether the symptom is thread-specific, but it may not retain the old conversation context or finish interrupted work.
  4. Identify whether you use a custom provider. If Codex is configured to use an OpenAI-compatible custom Responses endpoint, include that fact in your diagnosis and support report. Do not include API keys or other secrets.
  5. Contact support if the failure continues. Include your own request ID, time, surface and version, operating system, whether the problem is limited to one thread, whether Codex produced partial work, and whether you use a custom provider. Sanitize configuration details before sharing them.

Use the pattern to narrow the diagnosis

Observed pattern What it may distinguish What has been reported
An older or resumed thread fails, while a new session initially works A symptom associated with a particular thread or session This occurred in one desktop report. It does not establish a reliable repair. See the Codex issue reports.
WebSocket retries or a handshake fail, followed by an HTTPS fallback The transport path in that reported setup One short fallback test completed, but the reporter also described longer tasks that later failed. This does not establish a general workaround or a supported HTTPS-only setting. See the Codex issue reports.
A custom OpenAI-compatible Responses provider is configured A provider-integration case rather than the standard hosted Codex path One reporter said direct streaming calls to the provider succeeded while Codex failed. The proposed Codex runtime or session-parsing explanation was a hypothesis, not a confirmed cause. See the Codex issue reports.
Reinstalling or resetting, or changing firewall settings, does not help A reason not to assume the local installation or firewall is responsible One Windows 11 user reported that these attempts did not resolve the problem. This does not show whether they would help in another environment. See the Codex issue reports.

Why common “fixes” are not guaranteed

Reports do not establish that reinstalling Codex, changing firewall settings, switching transports, or buying network hardware will resolve this error. One Windows 11 report said reinstall/reset attempts and firewall adjustments had not helped. Another user reported that an HTTPS fallback completed one short reproduction after WebSocket retries timed out, but longer tasks later failed. These are individual experiences, not universal tests or instructions for a supported setting.

  • What You Get: PowerExpand USB-C to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter, welcome guide, 18-month worry-free warranty, and friendly customer service.

Likewise, a custom provider responding successfully to a direct streaming call does not prove Codex will handle that provider’s session in the same way. The cause in that report was not confirmed. Share sanitized configuration details with support rather than assuming the endpoint, Codex, or your network is conclusively at fault.

What to include in a useful support report

  • Your request ID, if the error displayed one.
  • The approximate time and time zone of the interruption.
  • Codex surface and version, plus your operating system.
  • Whether the problem affects one resumed thread, new conversations, or multiple Codex surfaces.
  • Whether the task had already produced partial output or changed local files.
  • Whether you use hosted Codex or a custom provider; redact keys, tokens, and other credentials.

Public reports confirm that this symptom has occurred in differing Codex contexts, but they do not establish how common it is or identify a maintainer-confirmed root cause. The practical goal is to preserve the request ID and enough context for support to distinguish those contexts.
