“ChatGPT app won’t connect,” “a network error occurred,” and “my chats are missing on my phone” are different failures. First identify whether ChatGPT cannot reach its service, your conversation history is hidden or associated with another account, or a connected third-party app cannot authorize or retrieve data. The correct fix depends on that distinction.
Use the sequence below: check for a service incident, verify account and workspace, test the app on another network, remove possible VPN or filtering interference, and then investigate connected apps separately. Do not delete and reinstall repeatedly or reconnect an external provider until you know which layer is failing.
Identify which connection problem you have
Record the exact message and what still works before changing settings. A failure to stream a reply is a network or service-path problem; an empty-looking sidebar is usually an account, workspace, archive, or history-visibility issue; and a provider that shows as connected but returns no files is an app-permission, availability, or indexing problem.

These comparisons narrow the fault domain; they do not prove a single root cause. A service incident and a local network block can produce nearly identical error text.

Check for a service incident before changing local settings
OpenAI identifies temporary server-side problems as one possible cause of connection errors. Check the current OpenAI status information and the guidance in Troubleshooting ChatGPT Error Messages before making several local changes. If an incident is active, wait for the service to recover and avoid repeatedly signing out, reinstalling, or reconnecting providers.
If status is normal, run a controlled comparison: use the same account on another device or in the web interface, and use a different network if available. A failure everywhere points more strongly toward the service or account; a failure only on one device or network points toward local software or network controls.
When ChatGPT history is missing or stops syncing
OpenAI states that conversation history syncs across devices where you are signed in. Therefore, missing chats often mean the device is using a different OpenAI account, a different sign-in method for the same person, or another workspace—not that synchronization has permanently failed.

- Open the account or profile menu and compare the email address with the device where the conversations are visible.
- Check how you authenticated. Signing in with an email and password, a single-sign-on option, or a device-provider button can lead to different accounts if they use different addresses.
- If you belong to more than one workspace, switch to the workspace that contains the conversations. Personal and organization workspaces can have separate history and data controls.
- Refresh the app, then sign out and sign back in to reload the account’s history.
On iOS, use the app menu to view prior conversations; on Android, open the sidebar. Labels can change between releases, so follow the current menu wording rather than an older screenshot. Search, archives, and the history control
A chat missing from the regular sidebar may be archived or simply not currently visible in the list. Search for a distinctive word or phrase from the conversation; archived chats remain searchable. Inspect Archived Chats using the current Settings or account-menu labels, following How to Delete and Archive Chats in ChatGPT for the relevant controls.

Also check Settings > Data controls and the Chat history & training control. If the setting was changed, reload the app after correcting it. A data export can help establish which chats are still stored in the account. Deleting a chat is permanent: deleted chats cannot be restored.
Use a data export only as a confirmation step
When search and account checks do not explain the discrepancy, request an export from the account’s data controls. Compare the exported conversations with what the app displays. This separates a display or sync problem from a conversation that is no longer stored. Do not treat an export as a way to recover a deleted chat.

For messages such as “ChatGPT keeps saying a network error occurred,” work from the least disruptive test to the most specific network investigation.
- Refresh or restart. Reload the page or force-close and reopen the app. Retry one short prompt and note whether the failure occurs while signing in, sending, or streaming.
- Try another interface. Test the same account in the web interface or on another device. If only one client fails, update or reinstall that client after recording the details needed for support.
- Change networks. Compare the current Wi-Fi with a cellular hotspot or another trusted connection. If the hotspot works and the original Wi-Fi does not, the local network path deserves investigation.
- Temporarily remove intermediaries. Test with a VPN, proxy, secure-DNS tool, browser security extension, or content filter disabled. Restore protections immediately after the test; the purpose is isolation, not a permanent security recommendation.
- Retry after a short interval. A transient service or routing problem can clear without any configuration change. Record the time and time zone if it persists.
OpenAI’s general recommendations are collected in Network recommendations for ChatGPT errors on web and apps. Network errors can originate on either side of the connection, so a successful retry does not by itself identify the original cause.
Investigate company, school, or filtered networks
Managed networks can block or alter the long-lived connection used for updates and notifications even when ordinary websites load. OpenAI says ChatGPT uses the secure WebSocket endpoint wss://ws.chatgpt.com over TCP port 443 for conversation updates and notifications. Web filtering, proxy enforcement, TLS inspection, firewall rules, or WebSocket upgrade blocking can close that connection.

Run a safe isolation test
- Record the failure time and the exact message.
- Try the same device and account on a cellular hotspot, without changing other settings.
- If the hotspot works but company or school Wi-Fi fails, repeat once in the affected location to rule out a temporary outage.
- Give the result to the network administrator. Ask IT to inspect OpenAI-domain filtering, proxy rewriting, TLS inspection, WebSocket upgrade support, and outbound TCP 443 access.
Do not change a corporate firewall or bypass organizational controls yourself. Provide IT with the symptom, interface, timestamp, and whether the failure affects all users or only one device. The OpenAI network recommendations describe the relevant network requirements.
Voice has a separate networking consideration: OpenAI’s guidance specifies UDP port 3478 for Voice. That is a configuration detail, not a statistic about connection failures, and it does not explain ordinary text-chat history synchronization.
When a connected third-party app says “connected” but ChatGPT finds nothing
A successful authorization establishes a connection, but it does not guarantee that every later action will work. OpenAI’s support wording is explicit: A successful connection does not mean every later step will work.
Treat provider retrieval as a separate diagnosis from ChatGPT’s own history synchronization.
Check availability in the exact context
- Confirm the ChatGPT account and workspace selected in the current session.
- Check whether the connected app is available with the selected model and in the interface you are using. Availability can vary by model, chat surface, plan, region, role, or workspace policy.
- Verify that the provider account is the intended one and that it granted the permissions required for the requested files or actions.
- Ask a workspace administrator whether the app is permitted for your role and whether an organization policy limits its use.

Separate permissions from indexing and scope
If the provider is authorized but expected information is absent, confirm that the administrator-managed source is configured and that initial indexing has finished. The requested item may be outside the configured sync scope, excluded by a folder or repository rule, or not yet indexed. A connection indicator does not mean that every provider object is searchable.

Record the provider name, the item you expected to find, the selected model and interface, and the workspace. If status is normal and the checks above fail, contact OpenAI Support instead of repeatedly disconnecting and reconnecting the provider; repeated authorization can add confusion without changing permissions or indexing scope.

iPhone and iPad
Start with the general restart, account, and network tests. OpenAI’s iOS failure guidance recommends relaunching the app. If crashes continue, uninstall the app and download it again from the App Store, then sign in to the intended account and workspace. Check the current App Store listing for compatibility before assuming a particular device or operating-system requirement.
When reporting an iOS failure, include the device model, system language, custom-keyboard use, accessibility settings, the time the problem began, whether it occurs only on Wi-Fi, and whether one feature or every feature is affected. The detailed guidance is in ChatGPT iOS app potential failures.
Android phones and tablets
Use the sidebar to view history and search conversations. To identify the installed release, open the profile area and then About, following the labels in the current build. The ChatGPT Android App FAQ documents these navigation points.
The reviewed Android guidance does not provide a separate, detailed network-repair sequence. Use the general error and network procedure: check service status, restart, compare another network or interface, and investigate VPN, proxy, filtering, and WebSocket interference. Avoid prescribing an Android-only fix that OpenAI has not documented.

Compare environments without guessing
A small matrix of controlled tests can show where the fault follows you:

Each comparison is an isolation clue, not proof. Change one variable at a time and write down the result, timestamp, account, workspace, model, and interface.
When to contact OpenAI Support or your IT team
Escalate a persistent ChatGPT connection failure
Contact OpenAI when the problem survives checks across devices, interfaces, and networks, or when you can reproduce it after service status returns to normal. For browser-based failures, OpenAI may ask for a HAR file and browser-console errors with timestamps. Follow the current support instructions for capturing those diagnostics; do not paste raw logs into public forums.
Include the model, conversation URL or ID when applicable, exact error text, date and time with time zone, device and interface, account or workspace context, networks tested, and steps already attempted. Screenshots should have personal, financial, and organizational information removed.
Escalate an app or provider failure
For a connected-app problem, provide the app name, affected account or workspace, selected model and interface, exact message, expected item, time of failure, and permission or indexing checks performed. State whether ordinary ChatGPT conversations and history still work. This prevents a provider-sync report from being mistaken for a general connection outage.
What never to send
- Passwords or one-time sign-in codes
- Access tokens, API keys, cookies, or session credentials
- Unredacted conversation content or confidential company files
- Full exports when a small, redacted example is sufficient
For company-network-only failures, send IT the symptom and timestamp and ask it to inspect filtering, proxy behavior, TLS inspection, WebSocket upgrade handling, and TCP 443 access. Do not weaken security controls without the administrator’s approval.
