Start with the compatibility gates, not random fixes. As of October 13, 2026, the full PC release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled for October 23, 2026. Activision requires an SSD, a supported Windows and DirectX 12 configuration, TPM 2.0, and Secure Boot. Beta crashes and launch posts are not proof of a defect in the release build, so identify whether you are troubleshooting a beta installation or the launch version before drawing conclusions.

Use the sequence below: identify the exact failure, compare your hardware with Activision’s tier that matches your goal, verify TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot, install the currently listed graphics driver, then submit a reproducible report if the problem remains. Avoid changing firmware or the registry on the basis of an unverified forum suggestion.

What is known before launch

Activision lists October 23, 2026 as Modern Warfare 4’s full release date. The support hub reviewed on October 13 contained system requirements, feedback and bug-reporting guidance, edition information, and beta-reward material, but no dedicated Modern Warfare 4 PC crash or known-issues article. That means an individual beta report can describe a real experience without proving a launch-build problem, a shared cause, or a widespread failure rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Search phrases such as “MW4 Beta won’t launch on Steam” and “Crash on Start?” reflect how players describe beta problems. Treat them as symptom descriptions, not diagnoses. A useful troubleshooting record says exactly what happened, on which platform, and at what point in the launch process.

Identify the failure precisely

Before changing anything, classify the symptom. The distinction determines which checks matter and gives support staff information they can reproduce.

  • Launcher failure: Steam, Battle.net, or the Xbox PC app closes, loops, or never hands control to the game.
  • Security failure: a TPM, Secure Boot, attestation, or authorization message appears before the menu.
  • Startup crash: the game window opens and exits before reaching the main menu.
  • Menu or loading crash: the game reaches a menu but fails when joining a mode, loading shaders, or entering a map.
  • In-game crash: a repeatable action, map, graphics setting, or play interval precedes the desktop return.
  • Performance or compatibility problem: the game launches but cannot maintain the performance target, reports unsupported hardware, or runs out of storage during an update.

Write down the exact error text or code, the platform, Windows edition and version, CPU, GPU, installed RAM, available SSD space, and when the problem began. Note whether it happens every time, only after an update, or only in a particular mode. Do not infer a cause from an error code alone.

Check the three official PC targets

Activision publishes three desktop-PC tiers. The first is a launch-compatibility baseline; the second targets 90 frames per second in multiplayer at High settings; the third targets high-quality ray tracing at upscaled 4K. The latter two are performance targets, not extra requirements to start the game.

Every tier requires broadband internet and DirectX 12 compatibility. Supported CPUs are Intel or AMD models with AVX support. Intel Arc cards require Resizable BAR. Activision says the listed 115 GB is the launch requirement, but mandatory updates may need additional free space, so leave more room than the exact figure if possible.

The table describes desktop configurations. A laptop GPU with the same name as a desktop card can have different power limits and performance; verify the laptop manufacturer’s specification instead of assuming equivalence. Trial, beta, and Windows Insider builds may not be supported. Activision also warns that specifications can change.

Resolve the published CPU wording difference

Activision’s support requirements list an Intel Core i7-8700 in the recommended tier. An official Call of Duty Steam announcement lists an i7-8700K instead. Use the Activision support article as the direct requirements reference, and do not make a purchase or compatibility decision based solely on that discrepancy without checking the current official page after launch.

Verify TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot

These are mandatory compatibility gates, not optional security advice. Activision’s published wording is: “TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are required to play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.” Its guidance applies to Windows 10 version 22H2 or later and Windows 11, with UEFI boot mode, a GPT system disk, and Secure Boot enabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the Secure Attestation Wizard first

  1. Open Activision’s Modern Warfare 4 Secure Attestation Wizard from the official support guidance.
  2. Run its checks and record which item fails. The wizard can identify TPM, Secure Boot, GPT, UEFI, Windows updates, or authorization problems.
  3. Correct only the failed prerequisite, then run the check again before launching the game.

The wizard is a diagnostic report, not permission to change firmware blindly. The exact BIOS or UEFI menu names vary by motherboard and system maker.

Confirm status in Windows

  • Press Win+R, enter msinfo32, and inspect BIOS Mode and Secure Boot State in System Information. BIOS Mode should be UEFI and Secure Boot State should be On.
  • Press Win+R, enter tpm.msc, and check that Windows reports a usable TPM and specification version 2.0.
  • In Disk Management, inspect the system disk’s partition style. Activision’s guide requires GPT rather than MBR.

If the disk is MBR or the machine boots in Legacy mode, stop before converting partitions or changing firmware. Back up important data and follow the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s instructions; an incorrect firmware or boot-mode change can make Windows fail to start.

Install the current graphics driver

At the time of the October 1, 2026 requirements article, Activision listed these driver versions:

GPU vendor Version listed by Activision
AMD 26.7.1
NVIDIA 616.56
Intel 32.0.101.8974

Activision said an ASD-compatible NVIDIA driver was expected on October 21, two days before the scheduled launch. That future driver may supersede 616.56, so check the live requirements page immediately before launch and after any crash-related notice. Do not treat the table as permanently current.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install the driver intended for your exact GPU and Windows version. If a crash began immediately after a driver update, record the old and new versions in your report and follow the GPU manufacturer’s supported rollback procedure rather than downloading an unverified package.

A safe troubleshooting sequence

Work from low-risk checks to more invasive changes. Test the same reproduction step after each change so you know what affected the result.

  1. Capture the baseline. Record the platform, game build, Windows version, CPU, GPU, RAM, free SSD space, exact error, crash location, frequency, and the last change made before the failure.
  2. Compare with minimum requirements. Check CPU model and AVX support, GPU model and video memory, 8 GB minimum RAM, DirectX 12 support, 64-bit Windows, and 115 GB of free SSD space. Verify laptop hardware against its manufacturer’s specification.
  3. Check the security gates. Run the Secure Attestation Wizard, then confirm TPM 2.0, UEFI, GPT, and Secure Boot in Windows. Resolve Windows updates or authorization failures it identifies.
  4. Check the driver. Compare your AMD, NVIDIA, or Intel driver with Activision’s current listing. Recheck the page because the NVIDIA ASD-compatible package was scheduled shortly before release.
  5. Install pending Windows and game updates. Restart after installation and make sure the game is not still downloading or verifying content.
  6. Isolate background software. Activision’s older Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) crash guidance mentions closing background applications and checking overlays or recording tools. This is a basic isolation step for a related title, not proof that overlays are a known Modern Warfare 4 cause. Close one overlay or recorder at a time, test, and restore it if it is unrelated.
  7. Retest consistently. Use the same menu, map, or action that previously failed. Note whether the symptom moved, disappeared, or changed into a different error.
  8. Report if it persists. Submit a detailed bug report rather than repeatedly applying unrelated system changes.

What to do for each common symptom

The game never reaches the menu

First separate a launcher problem from a game-process problem. Note whether the launcher closes, whether a game process appears briefly, and whether a security message is shown. Check Windows version, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, UEFI/GPT status, the graphics driver, and available SSD space before trying broader software changes. A failure before the menu is not automatically a GPU fault.

A TPM or Secure Boot message appears

Use the attestation result to identify the missing prerequisite. A working TPM alone is insufficient if Secure Boot is off; Secure Boot alone is insufficient if the system is in Legacy mode, uses an MBR system disk, or lacks TPM 2.0. Follow the manufacturer’s firmware instructions and verify the result in Windows after rebooting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The game crashes while loading or playing

Record the exact location and trigger: shader compilation, a particular map, joining multiplayer, changing graphics settings, or an elapsed time. Confirm the machine is above the minimum tier, the driver is current, and the SSD has room for updates. If disabling an overlay helps, report that observation without presenting it as a confirmed game defect.

An update reports insufficient space

The published launch requirement is 115 GB on an SSD, but Activision warns that updates can require more storage. Free space on the drive that holds the game and its update staging files; an external or slower drive does not change the stated SSD requirement. Activision does not specify SATA versus NVMe or endorse a particular SSD model.

The game runs but misses the expected frame rate

The 90 FPS figure applies to the recommended hardware tier in multiplayer at High settings. It is not a guarantee for minimum hardware, single-player scenes, ray tracing, unusual driver states, or every map. Compare your parts with the appropriate tier before treating lower performance as a launch failure. The ray-tracing tier targets high-quality ray tracing at upscaled 4K and calls for 32 GB of RAM and 16 GB of video memory.

Submit a report that can be acted on

Activision’s bug-reporting guidance says: “A helpful bug report includes what happened, where and when it happened, and steps to reproduce what you experienced.” Include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • the exact error text or code, with a screenshot if it is visible;
  • Steam, Battle.net, or Xbox PC as the platform;
  • Windows edition and version;
  • CPU, GPU, driver version, RAM, and available SSD space;
  • the mode, map, menu, or action that triggers the failure;
  • how often it occurs and whether it began after an update;
  • the steps that reproduce it and what changed after each safe test.

The general PC crash form requests crash timing and frequency, GPU, error code and details, and permits a crash-log upload. Because the reviewed form was displayed in a Warzone context, confirm that the game selector is set to Modern Warfare 4 before submitting. A form accepting crash logs is a reporting route, not an acknowledgement that Activision has confirmed your specific cause.

Known-issue limits and beta evidence

No independent crash-rate study or publisher statistic for Modern Warfare 4 PC failures was available in the reviewed material. Individual beta posts may help you search for the exact wording of a symptom, but they do not establish prevalence or show that a problem survives into the launch build. Do not apply registry edits, BIOS changes, memory timings, or system-repair commands copied from an unverified post as if they were official remedies.

After October 23, check the Modern Warfare 4 support hub again for launch-specific crash articles, driver changes, or known-issue notices. The absence of a dedicated article before launch means only that no such article was displayed at that time.

Launch-day checklist

  • Windows 10 22H2 or later, or Windows 11, on a 64-bit installation.
  • CPU with AVX support and a DirectX 12-compatible GPU.
  • Hardware compared with the minimum, recommended, or ray-tracing tier that matches your goal.
  • At least 115 GB free on an SSD, plus headroom for updates.
  • TPM 2.0 present and enabled.
  • UEFI boot mode, GPT system disk, and Secure Boot enabled.
  • Graphics driver checked against Activision’s current list, including any NVIDIA ASD-compatible replacement.
  • Exact error, reproduction steps, and system specifications recorded if the crash continues.

When all requirements pass but the same reproducible failure remains, stop escalating local changes and send the detailed report. That preserves your system state and gives Activision the information needed to determine whether the problem is a launch defect, a configuration conflict, or unsupported hardware.
