When an AI-generated 3D scene imports with white materials, cracked textures, the wrong scale, a sideways orientation, missing faces, or unusable collision, first find the layer where it fails: the generated asset, the exported file, the engine importer, or the scene setup. Preserve the original export, inspect it in a DCC application or neutral viewer, then compare that result with a clean import in the target engine.
A defect visible before import points to geometry, UVs, normals, or texture generation. A defect that appears only in the engine usually points to format support, texture paths, material connections, units, axis conversion, or importer settings. The examples below are troubleshooting cases, not evidence of a universal failure rate for AI-generated assets.
Start by isolating the failing layer
An imported scene is a chain of handoffs. The generator creates geometry and maps; an exporter packages them; a DCC application may reinterpret them; the game engine converts them into materials, meshes, collision, and scene objects. A problem can be introduced at any handoff, so repeatedly regenerating the model is often the wrong first move.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPreserve an untouched reference
- Save the original export under a read-only or clearly versioned name. Do not overwrite it while testing.
- Record the generator and asset or model identifier, export format, DCC application and version, engine and version, importer settings, and a screenshot of the failure.
- Make a working copy and, when practical, import it into a clean test scene or project folder. This separates an asset problem from project-specific materials, lighting, post-processing, or scripts.
Meshy asks for the model ID, export format, target tool and version, and a screenshot when escalating texture issues. Those details are useful even when you are diagnosing the asset yourself.

Compare the source file with the engine result
Open the exported file in the DCC application used for cleanup or in a neutral viewer. Compare geometry, orientation, scale, UV layout, material slots, and texture appearance with the engine import.
- If the same defect is visible in the DCC application and the engine, investigate generated geometry, UVs, normals, texture maps, and material data.
- If the DCC version is correct but the engine version is wrong, investigate format compatibility, texture paths, importer options, material assignment, units, and axis conversion.
- If the asset works in a clean project but not in the production scene, investigate project materials, shader compatibility, lighting, collision settings, and level transforms.
This comparison is a diagnostic inference from the differences between export and import pipelines; it is not a guarantee that every defect will fit one category.
A repeatable diagnostic sequence
1. Reproduce the failure without changing anything
Write down exactly what you did: which file was exported, where it was imported, which settings were enabled, and what changed from the expected result. Capture the first visible failure rather than only the final scene. For example, note whether the mesh is present but white, whether textures are cracked only at a distance, or whether the object is the correct shape but 100 times too small.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall2. Check the file in the source application
Inspect the mesh at the same camera angle and lighting where possible. Look for overlapping UV islands, missing material slots, stretched polygons, inverted faces, non-manifold gaps, and texture maps that are absent or point to a local path the engine cannot access. Check whether the file contains one mesh or several and whether the intended level-of-detail (LOD) meshes are present.
3. Import a copy into a minimal engine test
Use the target engine’s normal importer, but avoid adding custom scripts or replacing materials at first. A minimal test tells you whether the importer can read the file and whether the issue is caused by the production project. Keep the test result beside the untouched export so every change can be compared.
4. Change one variable at a time
Do not change the file format, scale, axis, material, and texture settings in one pass. A controlled sequence—such as GLB with default settings, then FBX with default settings, then a corrected material—shows which change fixed or introduced the problem. Keep a short change log with the engine version and importer values.

5. Verify the complete result
A mesh that looks correct in the viewport is not necessarily ready for a game. Check material slots, base color and other maps, scale, orientation, collision, LODs, vertex colors, and behavior at the distances used by the project. Epic’s Unreal documentation includes static-mesh workflows for these items, but other engines expose different controls.
Diagnose by the visible symptom
| Symptom | First checks | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| White, gray, or flat model | Check whether a material is assigned and whether base-color and other expected maps exist and are connected. | Reconnect available maps in the target material. In Unreal FBX imports, inspect which maps arrived and connect those that were not linked automatically. |
| Visible seams, cracks, or stretched or doubled textures | Inspect UV overlap and wrapping, texture maps, and whether the result changes between GLB and FBX. | Compare formats, inspect UVs and maps, and determine whether the defect follows the texture or appears only in one engine. If it is widespread, re-bake or regenerate the texture instead of patching every seam. |
| GLB texture cracks in Unreal | Confirm that the asset is a Meshy GLB and that the engine version matches the documented case. | For Unreal Engine 5.5.4 and 5.6.0, Meshy’s July 27, 2026 help article recommends opening the affected texture’s Level Of Detail settings and changing Mip Gen Settings to NoMipMaps. Test this on a copy and recheck the exact target version. |
| Blurry texture after Meshy Unreal plugin import | See whether selecting the texture asset in the Content Browser makes it sharpen. | Meshy documents entering r.Streaming.FullyLoadUsedTextures 1 in the Unreal Editor command box as a workaround for the described behavior. Treat it as a scoped troubleshooting command and verify it in the project where it is needed. |
| Invisible or implausibly large or small model | Check source and target units and the importer scale. | Confirm that the source and target use compatible units and that the imported dimensions are intentional. Unreal documents one Unreal Unit as one centimeter. |
| Model rotated or lying on its side | Check the source-up and target-up axes and the exporter’s conversion setting. | Apply axis conversion for the specific exporter and engine. Tripo’s workflow guide identifies Y-up/Z-up conversion as a common import check. |
| Gaps, dark patches, or see-through faces | Inspect the original mesh, face orientation and normals, and whether the defect exists before import. | Repair geometry or normals in the DCC application when appropriate, re-export, and compare. Exact menu paths depend on the DCC and version; do not assume a Blender or Unity procedure applies elsewhere. |
| Collision behaves incorrectly | Confirm that collision geometry exists and inspect collision display in the engine. | For Unreal, review custom collision in the Static Mesh Editor and verify the collision shape rather than relying on the visible render mesh. |
Fix white or incomplete materials
Confirm that the maps actually exist
A material slot can survive export even when its images do not. Check that base color, normal, roughness, metallic, and any other maps used by the source material are present beside the export or embedded in it. A map that was referenced through an absolute path on the authoring computer may not be found by the engine.
Reconnect maps in the target material
Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5.8 static-mesh documentation warns that importing a mesh with a material does not mean every connection will be recreated. Its guidance states: “Although textures and materials can be imported with a Static Mesh, only Color and Normal will automatically be connected (assuming a supported material was used), Specular maps will be imported but not connected, other maps, for example an Ambient Occlusion map in the Diffuse slot of a Maya material, will not even be imported; it is best to check your materials and connect any unconnected maps and check which maps did not import.”
Use the imported material as a diagnostic record. If a texture is listed in the project but not connected, wire it to the intended input and check the texture’s color-space setting. If it is absent entirely, return to the export or rebake step; a material edit cannot connect a file that was never transferred.
Use format comparisons carefully
Tripo’s workflow guidance presents GLB as useful when embedding textures and FBX as a common game-engine workflow. Meshy likewise recommends comparing GLB and FBX when a texture issue occurs in only one format. These are workflow recommendations, not proof that one format is universally better. Export both only after preserving the original and keep the same material and scale assumptions while comparing them.

Determine whether the defect is local or global
Zoom into the texture and rotate the model. A small overlap or pinched island may be repaired locally in the DCC application. Repeated seams across many parts, doubled patterns, or misaligned islands usually indicate a broader UV or bake problem. Meshy’s troubleshooting guidance recommends re-baking or regenerating textures for widespread overlap rather than spending time on many local patches.

Check the entire texture path
- Confirm that the engine can read the image format and that the file is in the project location expected by the importer.
- Check that each material slot points to the intended image, not to a similarly named texture from another asset.
- Inspect UV channel selection when the asset contains multiple UV sets. A lightmap or secondary UV set may be used accidentally for the visible material.
- Compare the same image in the DCC application and the engine. If the image itself contains the seam, changing importer settings will not repair it.
Handle mipmap-specific cracks narrowly
Meshy’s July 27, 2026 help article identifies a GLB texture-crack case in Unreal Engine 5.5.4 and 5.6.0. For that documented combination, it recommends selecting the texture, opening Level Of Detail, and setting Mip Gen Settings to NoMipMaps. This is a version-specific workaround for the named case, not a default setting for every Unreal release or every GLB. Validate the result on a copy, then inspect the asset at the camera distances used in the game.
Scale, units, and axis conversion
Measure before applying a transform
An object can appear invisible because it is microscopic, or fill the entire level because it is enormous. Measure a known dimension in the DCC application and compare it with the engine’s displayed dimensions. Apply a deliberate scale conversion once, preferably during export or import, rather than stacking arbitrary transforms in both applications.
Epic’s Unreal Engine documentation defines one Unreal Unit as one centimeter. The value is a concrete Unreal convention, not a universal rule for all engines. Record the source unit, target unit, and importer scale in the asset notes so another export does not silently change the dimensions.

Resolve up-axis differences
Many authoring tools and engines use different up-axis conventions. If a character lies on its side or a room is rotated 90 degrees, check the exporter’s axis conversion and the engine’s import option before rotating the mesh permanently. Tripo’s guide specifically calls out Y-up/Z-up conversion as an import check. Apply conversion in one controlled location; applying it both during export and import can rotate the asset twice.
Unreal Engine import checks
Match the FBX pipeline version
Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.8 documentation says the Unreal Engine 5 FBX import pipeline uses FBX 2020.2 and warns that exporting with another FBX version may cause incompatibilities. Confirm the exporter version before troubleshooting materials or collision. If the exporter cannot produce the expected version, test an alternate export path and record the result rather than assuming the importer is at fault.
Inspect the Static Mesh Editor
After import, open the mesh in the Static Mesh Editor and check the render, material slots, UV channels, bounds, collision display, and available LODs. The documented pipeline supports static meshes with materials and textures, custom collision, multiple UV sets, smoothing groups, vertex colors, LODs, and multiple meshes. Support in the pipeline does not guarantee that an AI-generated file contains valid data for each feature.

Triangulate deliberately
Epic recommends triangulating in the modeling application when you need control over the final triangles, rather than relying on importer triangulation. A mesh whose silhouette changes after triangulation can show cracks or shading differences even when the vertex positions looked correct in the source application. Compare the triangulated export with the source and inspect normals after the operation.
Check collision separately from rendering
The visible mesh and collision mesh can be entirely different. Display collision in the Static Mesh Editor, test it with the game’s movement or physics systems, and verify that thin surfaces, holes, and internal faces behave as intended. If custom collision was expected but is missing, return to the export naming and collision setup rather than modifying the render material.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Unity and other engines
Engine-specific advice must stay scoped to the version that was tested. Meshy’s Unity plugin documentation names Unity 6, version 6000.0.45f1, as its tested version. That establishes the vendor’s test environment; it does not establish compatibility with every Unity release or provide a universal repair procedure.
For Unity, Godot, or another engine, apply the same layer-based method: inspect the source file, verify format support, check texture paths and material channels, confirm units and axes, and inspect collision and LOD data in the engine’s own editors. Use the exact importer labels and version documentation for the engine in use instead of copying Unreal settings.
Choose between a local repair, re-export, and regeneration
Repair locally when the defect is isolated
Use a DCC edit when one UV island is overlapping, one normal is flipped, one material slot is empty, or one collision primitive is wrong while the rest of the asset is sound. Save the repaired source separately, export it, and compare it with the untouched reference.
Re-export or switch formats when the transfer path fails
If the source application is correct but one format loses maps, changes orientation, or produces a different scale, test the alternate supported format. Keep the same source material and document the exporter version, embedded-versus-external textures, axis conversion, and scale so the comparison is meaningful.

Re-bake or regenerate textures when mapping is broadly defective
When seams, overlaps, or incorrect projections appear across tools and formats, Meshy’s guidance points toward re-baking or regenerating the texture. A new material bake can preserve usable geometry while replacing a bad texture set.
Regenerate geometry only after proving geometry is the cause
If the mesh has holes, impossible topology, or a silhouette that is wrong in the source application, regeneration may be justified. If the source is correct and only the engine import is wrong, regenerating geometry can waste time while leaving the real format or material problem untouched.
Version-specific workarounds and their limits
- Unreal 5.5.4 or 5.6.0, Meshy GLB cracks: test the affected texture with Mip Gen Settings set to NoMipMaps, as described in Meshy’s July 27, 2026 article.
- Meshy Unreal plugin blur: test
r.Streaming.FullyLoadUsedTextures 1in the Unreal Editor command box when the documented texture-streaming behavior occurs. - Unreal 5.8 FBX: verify FBX 2020.2, inspect material connections, and confirm scale and collision in the Static Mesh Editor.
- Unity plugin workflow: treat Unity 6,
6000.0.45f1, as Meshy’s named test version, not as a promise for all releases.
Do not apply a workaround outside its stated engine, asset type, and version without a copy and a verification pass. A setting that fixes one mipmap or streaming issue can affect memory use, visual sharpness, or performance elsewhere in a project.
Final verification checklist
Before replacing the original asset in a level, verify each item below:
- The untouched export remains available for comparison.
- The source application and engine show the same intended silhouette and topology.
- Scale matches a known real-world dimension and the engine’s unit convention.
- The object has the intended up-axis and rotation.
- Every material slot points to the correct material.
- Base color, normal, roughness, metallic, and other required maps are present and connected.
- UV channels are correct for visible textures and any lightmap workflow.
- Textures remain correct at the project’s camera distances and lighting conditions.
- Normals, smoothing, and triangulation do not create dark patches or see-through faces.
- Collision is present, displayed, and tested separately from the render mesh.
- LOD meshes, vertex colors, and multiple mesh parts behave as intended.
- The repaired asset is tested in the actual target engine version, not only in a DCC viewer.
What “game-ready” should mean for an AI-generated scene
“Game-ready” is a test result, not a guarantee attached to an export button. The specific mesh must pass checks for geometry, UVs, materials, scale, orientation, collision, LODs, and the target engine’s importer. Keep the clean source and each repaired export so you can reverse a change when a later engine update or material edit exposes a new problem.
