When a Google Ads API integration fails immediately after an upgrade, first identify the exact source and target versions, endpoint path, client-library release, operation, and returned error. Then determine whether the failure is a major-version schema change, a retired endpoint, an invalid request or field mask, an authentication problem, or an unversioned product change. The error payload, request ID, release notes, and proto-difference tables provide the evidence needed for a narrow fix.
Do not assume that every post-deployment error was caused by the API upgrade. A credentials, connectivity, configuration, or account-data problem can appear at the same time. This workflow separates those cases before you edit production code.
Start with the version boundary
Google Ads API versions do not all behave the same way. Google states that major releases introduce “breaking, backward-incompatible changes.” A major version has its own endpoint path, such as v25. A minor release is backward-compatible and updates the existing major-version endpoint in place; the minor suffix is not added to that endpoint path.
That distinction determines your first check:
- Major-version migration: update the client library, change requests to the target major endpoint, and review schema and behavior changes.
- Minor-version update: the endpoint path normally remains the same. You may still need a newer client library to use definitions introduced by the minor release.
- No endpoint change: investigate authentication, request construction, account data, or an unversioned change before blaming the release.
Google’s versioning documentation explains the endpoint and compatibility rules. Record the exact source and target versions rather than describing an incident only as “the latest upgrade.”

Collect evidence before changing code
Capture the first failing request while the deployment and logs still reflect the incident. A useful incident record contains:
- Source and target API major versions and the actual URL path sent over the wire.
- Client-library version, programming language, runtime or interpreter, operating system, and deployment revision.
- The operation or service method, customer-account context, and a sanitized request body.
- HTTP status, Google Ads API error code, complete message, and field location or path when supplied.
- The client-library exception, stack trace, timestamp, retry behavior, and response
request-id. - A sanitized response body and the smallest code fragment that constructs the failing request.
Google’s troubleshooting guide describes API failures as structured JSON and recommends preserving request IDs. A request ID can help Google Developer Relations locate a production request. Remove OAuth access tokens, refresh tokens, client secrets, and customer IDs before sharing logs or opening a support case.
Use the error as a pointer, not a verdict
For example, Google illustrates a FIELD_NOT_FOUND response in which a field mask contains the invalid field keyword.match_type. That pattern suggests a stale or invalid field reference, but it does not prove that your incident has the same cause. Match your own error code, field path, and operation to the documentation for your exact version transition.
Check retirement and endpoint status
Before modifying schemas, verify that the endpoint is still available. Deprecation means a version remains usable until its sunset date. At sunset, Google disables the version and calls to that endpoint fail, even if the application code itself has not changed.
Use Google’s live deprecation and sunset schedule. Future dates can be tentative, so check the schedule at the time of the incident. Google describes major versions as having an approximate 12-month lifespan and says there is at least a 20-week overlap between release of the latest client libraries and sunset of the version being retired. These are planning guidelines; the schedule for your specific version controls the decision.
Follow a five-step troubleshooting sequence
1. Verify what the deployment actually changed
- Compare the previous and current client-library versions.
- Inspect the generated request URL or library configuration and confirm the major endpoint path.
- Write down the first operation that failed, not just the first alert received.
- Check whether credentials, developer-token settings, login customer ID, environment variables, or account selection changed in the same deployment.
- Compare the deployment timestamp with the version’s deprecation or sunset date.
If the endpoint changed from one major version to another, continue with the migration checks below. If it did not, prioritize setup, authentication, request data, and unversioned-change branches.

2. Prove connectivity and authentication separately
Confirm that the application can reach the intended Google service and that the credentials are valid for the account and operation. An expired access token, invalid developer token, incorrect login customer ID, blocked network route, or wrong environment variable can produce an error immediately after a release even though no API field changed.
Run the smallest authenticated request that your integration uses safely. Compare its status and error structure with the failing operation. A failure in this minimal request points toward connectivity or authorization; a successful minimal request shifts attention to the changed operation, request shape, or account data.
3. Map the operation to the exact migration diff
Open Google’s upgrade guide for the source and target version pair. Follow the client-library and endpoint update instructions, read every relevant release note, and inspect the proto difference tables for added, removed, and changed definitions.
Do not apply a fix merely because a field name looks similar. A breaking change can involve a resource, service, enum, oneof structure, request requirement, field mask, or behavior. The failing method and returned field path must correspond to the documented change.
4. Check for unversioned changes
Some incompatible feature changes are not aligned with a major-version boundary. Google directs developers to its API blog, sunset page, and Mandatory Service Announcements for these changes. If the endpoint did not change and no migration diff explains the error, review those channels and confirm that the API contact email on your account is current. Google may email affected users about a mandatory change.

5. Apply one narrow change and validate it
Change only the field, resource, enum, endpoint, or configuration that the evidence identifies. Test against a test account whenever possible. If the problem depends on production-only data, Google’s troubleshooting guidance allows testing in production for that specific case; use the smallest safe request and protect account data and credentials.

Use the symptom to choose the correct branch
| Observed situation | Most likely branch | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Endpoint path changed to a new major version and a field, resource, or enum is rejected | Breaking schema or request change | Target-version release notes and proto diff for the failing method |
| Endpoint path did not change, but a newly introduced definition is unavailable in code | Client library is older than the definition you are trying to use | Client-library release that supports the target minor release |
| Calls fail for every operation with authorization or transport errors | Credentials, developer-token, account, network, or setup problem | Authentication configuration and a minimal authenticated request |
| Calls to an older endpoint fail after its retirement date | Sunset version | Live sunset schedule and endpoint configuration |
Only requests using one field mask fail with FIELD_NOT_FOUND |
Invalid or stale field reference | Field-mask construction and the target-version schema |
| Behavior changes without a major endpoint change or matching proto entry | Unversioned product or feature change | API blog, sunset page, and Mandatory Service Announcement |
Migration details that commonly cause failures
Client library and endpoint must move together
A major-version migration requires a client-library release that supports the target version and requests sent to the target major endpoint. Updating only the library can leave the application pointed at the old path; changing only the path can leave generated classes or enums incompatible with the server. Confirm both sides in logs and configuration.
Google says upgrades do not have to be strictly sequential. You can move to a supported target version without adopting every intermediate major release, provided the target library, endpoint, and documented migration changes are implemented.

Field masks are especially sensitive because a request can compile while naming a field that the target API no longer exposes. Search for every string-based mask, resource name, and manually constructed query in the failing code path. Compare each one with the target proto definition and remove or replace fields that were renamed, moved, or deleted.
Oneof restructuring in Google Ads API v25
Google’s v25 release notes, dated 2026-07-22, identify v25 changes as breaking changes. One documented structural change moved additional_value into the value_adjustment oneof and moved additional_high_lifetime_value into the high_lifetime_value_adjustment oneof. The new oneofs also contain multiplier fields.
Code that reads, writes, serializes, or tests the old standalone fields must be changed to construct the appropriate oneof member. Review both request construction and response parsing: a serializer may silently omit a field that no longer belongs to the old location, while a parser or assertion may still expect the former shape.

Lifecycle goal resources removed in v25
V25 removed the legacy CustomerLifecycleGoal and CampaignLifecycleGoal resources and services, along with related legacy settings and enums. Google directs integrations to the unified goals schema instead. The replacement areas named in the release notes include Goal.new_customer_acquisition_goal_settings and CampaignGoalConfig.campaign_new_customer_acquisition_settings.

Incentive fields and newly required values in v25
V25 changed incentive request and response enum fields from nested type fields to standalone fields such as incentive_type and offer_type. Use the standalone fields in code, serialization, and field masks.
The optional selected_incentive_id and customer_id fields on ApplyIncentiveRequest became required. A request that previously succeeded without them can now fail validation. Confirm that your application obtains the correct values for every call and that tests cover missing-value handling before the request reaches the API.
Separate schema failures from setup failures
Signs of a schema or migration problem
- The failing operation is limited to requests that use a changed field, resource, enum, or service.
- The response names an unknown field, removed resource, invalid enum, missing required field, or malformed field mask.
- The error begins when the major endpoint or generated client types change.
- A minimal authenticated request still succeeds.
Signs of an authentication or connectivity problem
- Every operation fails, including a previously known-good minimal request.
- The response concerns authorization, developer-token access, account selection, quota, DNS, TLS, proxy, or timeout rather than a field or resource.
- The deployment changed secrets, environment variables, network policy, or customer-account routing.
Keep these branches separate in incident records. Rewriting request schemas cannot repair an expired token, and rotating credentials cannot repair a removed resource.
Test the fix without creating a second incident
Build a focused regression case
- Use a representative test account and the smallest request that reproduces the failure.
- Assert the target resource, enum, oneof member, required field, and field mask explicitly.
- Record the expected success response and the error structure for known invalid inputs.
- Run the case against the target endpoint and client-library version used in deployment.
Include serialization tests when your language client generates protobuf messages. A compile-time success does not guarantee that a string field mask or dynamically assembled resource name is valid at runtime.

Handle errors for the next upgrade
Log status, error code, message, field path, request ID, operation, version, and deployment revision as structured fields. Redact OAuth credentials and customer identifiers at the logging boundary. Preserve the original exception and response rather than replacing them with a generic “API failed” message.
Use production only when the bug requires production data
Google recommends a test account first, with production testing reserved for defects that reproduce only with a specific production account or data shape. If production testing is unavoidable, limit the operation, use least-privilege credentials, and define a rollback or disable switch before sending traffic.
Prepare a useful Google support escalation
If documentation and a focused test do not identify the cause, provide a concise, sanitized package:
- Source and target API versions and the client-library release.
- Runtime, interpreter, operating system, platform, and deployment timestamp.
- Operation name, endpoint path, HTTP status, error code, message, field location, and request ID.
- Sanitized JSON request and response, plus the smallest relevant code snippet.
- A description of what changed and whether the failure reproduces in a test account.
Never include OAuth access or refresh tokens, client secrets, or customer IDs. A complete request ID and exact version transition are more useful than a screenshot with credentials or account identifiers visible.
Keep the integration ahead of the next breaking change
Google says the API typically has three major releases and three major release sunsets per year, although that cadence is not a guarantee of exact dates. Only the three most recent major releases are actively maintained. Treat that as a maintenance signal rather than waiting for a sunset outage.
- Monitor the official release notes and API blog.
- Review the sunset schedule during planning and before every major deployment.
- Read the stay-updated guidance and keep the API contact email current.
- Use a Google Developer Profile to save the release-notes page and receive update notifications when it changes.
- Maintain a compatibility test that exercises your highest-value operations against the supported target version.
Schedule migrations before the retirement window, not after calls begin failing. The overlap between new client-library availability and an old-version sunset provides time to test, but it does not remove the need to update request schemas and field masks.
Quick Recap
Decision checklist
- Have you recorded the exact source and target major versions?
- Does the request use the intended major endpoint path?
- Is the client library documented as supporting that target version?
- Did you capture status, error code, field location, exception, timestamp, and request ID?
- Did you remove tokens and customer IDs from diagnostic material?
- Does the failing element match a change in the correct release notes and proto diff?
- Did you check the live sunset schedule and unversioned-change announcements?
- Did you test the narrow fix against a test account and add regression coverage?
- Does your support package contain sanitized JSON, a code snippet, runtime details, and the version transition?
