An iPhone showing LTE is not automatically malfunctioning: 5G Auto can deliberately use LTE when 5G would not materially improve the experience. Wi‑Fi Calling is a separate service that needs a working internet connection over Wi‑Fi, an eligible AT&T postpaid account with HD Voice provisioned, the correct iPhone setting, and a verified Emergency 911 address.
Work from the connection outward. First identify whether the symptom is an absent 5G indicator, poor cellular data, an unavailable Wi‑Fi Calling switch, activation failure, dropped calls, or a general SOS/No Service condition. Then check eligibility, the selected line and settings, Airplane Mode, carrier settings, and finally AT&T account provisioning. The two tracks overlap at carrier settings and account support, but one cannot prove the other is working.
Identify the symptom before changing settings
Different indicators point to different layers of service. A 5G icon is only a network-mode indicator, not a promise of a particular speed. Likewise, a phone call that works does not prove that Wi‑Fi Calling is carrying it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| What you see | Most relevant layer | First question | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|---|
| LTE while data works | iPhone 5G mode and local cellular conditions | Is Voice & Data set to 5G Auto, 5G On, or LTE, and does the line have 5G coverage? | It does not by itself prove a fault. |
| No 5G indicator and no usable cellular data | Cellular service, account, SIM/line selection, or coverage | Is the phone showing SOS or No Service, or is data merely slower than expected? | Changing 5G mode cannot fix an account outage or a no-service condition. |
| Wi‑Fi Calling switch is missing or cannot be enabled | AT&T eligibility, HD Voice provisioning, carrier settings, or selected line | Is this an eligible postpaid line, and are you looking under the intended SIM? | A connected Wi‑Fi network alone does not make the feature available. |
| Wi‑Fi Calling activates but calls drop or sound poor | Wi‑Fi connection quality and handoff between Wi‑Fi and cellular | Does Wi‑Fi actually reach the internet, and does the problem occur on one network or everywhere? | The Wi‑Fi Calling setting being on does not guarantee a stable call. |
| SOS or No Service in several locations | Cellular registration, account status, SIM/eSIM, or an outage | Can the line register on cellular at all, with Wi‑Fi turned off? | Wi‑Fi Calling can provide a calling path but does not restore cellular registration. |
Requirements for each feature
What 5G needs
- An iPhone model capable of AT&T 5G and a compatible SIM or eSIM configuration.
- An AT&T plan and line that include 5G service.
- AT&T 5G coverage at the location where you are testing.
- A suitable Voice & Data selection under the cellular settings for the line you intend to use.
Apple’s missing-5G checklist starts with carrier-plan support and local coverage. Those are AT&T questions, so confirm them with AT&T rather than assuming that every account or address has 5G.

What Wi‑Fi Calling needs
- An active Wi‑Fi connection that can reach the internet; a network name appearing in Settings is not enough.
- An eligible AT&T postpaid wireless account with HD Voice provisioned.
- Wi‑Fi Calling enabled for the intended iPhone line.
- A completed and verified Emergency 911 Address when AT&T requests it during activation.
Prepaid, restricted, or incorrectly provisioned lines may not expose the option even when the iPhone is connected to excellent Wi‑Fi. Ask AT&T to verify compatibility and HD Voice provisioning if the switch is absent or activation fails.
Track A: troubleshoot missing, slow, or unexpected 5G
1. Separate an LTE choice from a service failure
Open Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data. On some iOS releases or regional configurations, the labels differ slightly. If you use Dual SIM, first select the cellular line whose data service you are testing.
| Choice | Behavior | When it is useful | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5G Auto | The iPhone uses 5G when it expects a noticeable benefit and can use LTE otherwise. | Everyday use when battery efficiency matters. | An LTE indicator can be normal even in an area with some 5G coverage. |
| 5G On | The iPhone prioritizes 5G when available. | A controlled test of whether 5G is available at the current location. | It can use more battery; it is not a universal fix for poor coverage or account problems. |
| LTE | The phone stays on LTE. | Comparing behavior or conserving battery where 5G is unreliable. | No 5G connection will be attempted while this is selected. |
Do not treat an LTE result under 5G Auto as evidence that the radio is broken. Change to 5G On only long enough to test, then choose the mode that fits your battery and coverage conditions.

Confirm with AT&T that the exact line has 5G eligibility and that your plan supports it. Check that the iPhone model and SIM or eSIM are compatible. Test in a known AT&T 5G coverage area; a phone cannot display 5G where the network is not deployed or where the signal cannot be used reliably.

If a second SIM is active, verify which line supplies cellular data. A perfectly configured secondary line will not make the primary line display 5G, and vice versa.
3. Refresh cellular registration with Airplane Mode
- Open Control Center or Settings and turn Airplane Mode on.
- Wait about 15 seconds so the cellular radios deregister.
- Turn Airplane Mode off and wait for the carrier name and signal bars to return.
- Recheck Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data and test in the same location.
Apple specifically recommends this toggle for a missing 5G connection. It refreshes registration; it does not add 5G to an ineligible plan or create coverage.
4. Check for a carrier-settings update
- Connect to Wi‑Fi or keep a usable cellular connection.
- Go to Settings > General > About.
- Remain on the About screen for a moment. If iOS offers a carrier-settings update, accept it and follow the restart prompt.
- If no prompt appears, do not assume an update is required; the phone is simply reporting that none is available at that time.
Apple notes that carrier-settings updates can add or enable support for 5G. They can also affect Wi‑Fi Calling, so this check belongs in both troubleshooting tracks.
5. Interpret poor performance without over-reading the icon
Coverage, plan eligibility, and the selected mode determine whether 5G is possible; the icon alone does not establish throughput. If data is slow while the phone is connected, record whether the issue occurs in one place or across multiple locations, whether it affects both SIM lines, and whether switching temporarily between 5G Auto and LTE changes stability. Give those observations to AT&T rather than claiming that the 5G label guarantees a particular speed.

- Inspected and guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage, which is not noticeable when the device is held at arm's length.
- Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a charging cable that may be generic.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
6. Escalate a persistent cellular problem
Contact AT&T when the line remains unregistered, never reaches 5G in a confirmed coverage area, or has a service symptom in several locations after the checks above. Ask support to verify:
- Account status and any suspended or restricted service.
- Plan and line eligibility for 5G.
- SIM or eSIM and line provisioning.
- Local coverage and known service conditions.
If AT&T confirms that the account, line, and coverage are appropriate and the problem persists, Apple support can evaluate the iPhone. A missing 5G indicator by itself is not enough to diagnose a hardware failure.
Track B: troubleshoot Wi‑Fi Calling
1. Confirm the account and Wi‑Fi prerequisites
Use a Wi‑Fi network that can open websites or otherwise reach the internet. AT&T requires an eligible postpaid wireless account provisioned with HD Voice. If the account is prepaid, restricted, newly changed, or missing HD Voice provisioning, activation can fail even when Wi‑Fi works for other devices.
Recommended Free Tools
Test the same iPhone on another trusted Wi‑Fi network if possible. A problem limited to one network points toward that connection; a problem on every network points more strongly toward the iPhone setting, carrier settings, or account provisioning.

2. Find and enable the feature
- Open Settings > Cellular. On some iOS versions, Wi‑Fi Calling is under Settings > Phone > Wi‑Fi Calling.
- If the iPhone has more than one SIM, tap the intended line before looking for its Wi‑Fi Calling controls.
- Turn on Wi‑Fi Calling on This iPhone.
- Read the emergency-services notice and enter the requested address.
- Verify the Emergency 911 Address when AT&T asks you to confirm it. Do not dismiss this step; activation may remain incomplete without it.
AT&T’s setup flow uses the emergency address to support emergency calling when the normal cellular route is unavailable. AT&T explains that an emergency call uses cellular where possible; otherwise location data or the stored E911 address may be used. Keep the address current when you move.
3. Check the actual Wi‑Fi connection
- Make sure Airplane Mode is off unless you deliberately enabled Wi‑Fi after turning it on.
- In Settings > Wi‑Fi, confirm that the intended network shows as connected.
- Open a web page or another internet service to verify that the network has internet access, not just local connectivity.
- If the network is unstable, tap its information button, choose Forget This Network, reconnect, and enter the Wi‑Fi password again.
- Restart the iPhone and test a call near the Wi‑Fi access point before moving farther away.
Weak or intermittent Wi‑Fi can cause dropped calls and poor audio even after Wi‑Fi Calling has activated. If every device loses internet access, troubleshoot the home network or router separately; buying new equipment is not a guaranteed fix.
4. Check the indicator correctly
AT&T indicates Wi‑Fi Calling with a carrier or Wi‑Fi label when the iPhone is connected to Wi‑Fi, Wi‑Fi Calling is enabled, and cellular service is weak or unavailable. The exact wording and placement can vary by iOS version and line configuration. A normal cellular call, a Wi‑Fi symbol, or a 5G icon alone does not prove that Wi‑Fi Calling is carrying the call.
5. Recheck carrier settings and provisioning
Go to Settings > General > About while connected to Wi‑Fi or cellular. Install an offered carrier-settings update. If the Wi‑Fi Calling menu is still missing, activation repeatedly fails, or the emergency-address flow will not complete, contact AT&T and ask it to verify:

- That the exact line and plan support Wi‑Fi Calling.
- That HD Voice is provisioned.
- That there are no account restrictions or pending changes.
- That the selected SIM or eSIM line is the one being activated.
6. Reset network settings only after simpler checks
A network reset can clear a damaged Wi‑Fi or cellular configuration, but it removes every saved Wi‑Fi password and related network setting. Record passwords and VPN details first.
- Open Settings > General.
- Choose Transfer or Reset iPhone (the wording can vary by iOS version).
- Tap Reset, then Reset Network Settings.
- Authenticate if asked and allow the iPhone to restart.
- Rejoin the Wi‑Fi network, then return to the Wi‑Fi Calling setting and complete activation again if prompted.
AT&T’s iPhone 14 guidance places this reset after basic connection and restart checks. Use the same order on newer or older models, adapting the menu labels shown by your iOS release.

Dual SIM and iOS-version details that commonly cause confusion
On a Dual SIM iPhone, settings are attached to a line. Before changing Voice & Data or Wi‑Fi Calling, tap the intended cellular plan and confirm its label. If you change the wrong line, the working line can remain unchanged and the symptom can appear inexplicable.

Look for the concepts Cellular Data Options, Voice & Data, and Wi‑Fi Calling even if their exact nesting differs. AT&T’s detailed failure checklist was written for iPhone 14; its order of operations is useful, but do not assume every label or screen is identical on another model.
When to stop troubleshooting and contact support
Contact AT&T without repeatedly resetting the phone when the issue is clearly account-related: the line has no service in multiple locations, 5G eligibility is uncertain, Wi‑Fi Calling is absent on an otherwise compatible iPhone, HD Voice is not provisioned, or activation fails after the emergency address is accepted. Give support the line being tested, the iPhone model, the locations or Wi‑Fi networks affected, the exact indicator shown, and which steps changed the behavior.
Contact Apple after AT&T confirms plan eligibility, provisioning, and coverage and the same iPhone still cannot use the feature. Apple can then check device software and hardware without treating a normal LTE decision as proof of a defect.

The device-setting guidance in Apple’s 5G material is general iPhone guidance, although the referenced page is localized for Singapore. Use AT&T for US plan, account, and coverage facts. AT&T’s emergency-calling and Wi‑Fi Calling requirements apply to its service, while exact menu labels depend on the iOS version and model installed on your phone.
