If an app shows black bars, stays in a phone-sized window, stretches, cuts off buttons, changes orientation, restarts while you unfold the Vivo X Fold6, or crashes only on the large display, first determine whether the fault follows the app or the phone. Compare the same app on the cover and inner screens, in each available orientation, then update the app and phone before changing any aspect-ratio setting. A problem limited to one app is usually an app-compatibility issue; display faults affecting several apps or the system interface are a reason to contact Vivo support.

What the two screens tell you before you change anything

The Vivo X Fold6 has two materially different display environments. Vivo’s India store lists an 8.02-inch main display and a 6.51-inch cover display. The India product-parameter page lists OriginOS 7 and Android 17, and gives unfolded dimensions of 157.16 × 145.66 mm. Those specifications are market-specific: your phone may ship with a different regional software build, so check the model, region and Android/OriginOS versions shown in your own Settings app before following version-specific advice.

Do not assume that unused space means the panel is defective. Android compatibility guidance describes letterboxing as a way of containing apps that were designed for a different aspect ratio or size. A phone that works normally on the cover display but looks wrong after unfolding is giving you a useful compatibility clue.

What you see What it may indicate First comparison
Black bars or unused strips around the app The app is being letterboxed because of fixed aspect-ratio or orientation rules. Open it on the cover screen, then unfold without changing any settings.
A narrow, phone-sized panel centered on the inner screen The app may not declare itself resizable for a large display. Try portrait and landscape, if the app supports both.
Controls or text look unusually wide or stretched A layout may be scaling to a larger width without adapting its components. Capture the same screen in both postures and compare.
Buttons, menus or fields are cut off A non-scrolling or fixed-size layout may not account for the available dimensions. Rotate once, and check whether the hidden control becomes reachable.
The app rotates unexpectedly Its orientation policy may conflict with the foldable posture or system rotation. Repeat with automatic rotation enabled and disabled.
The app restarts during unfolding The app may be recreating its activity when the available display size changes. Check whether it also restarts when rotating on the cover display.
The app crashes only on the inner screen A large-screen or posture-specific compatibility defect is possible. Record the app version and the exact unfold action that triggers it.

Record the app’s name and version, your Vivo model and region, the Android and OriginOS versions, and the time or action that triggers the fault. A screenshot is useful for cropping and letterboxing; a short screen recording is better for rotation, unfolding and restart problems.

Run a controlled cover-versus-inner-screen test

  1. Start with the phone closed and open the affected app on the 6.51-inch cover display. Note whether it fills the screen, leaves bars, or hides controls.
  2. Without changing the app’s settings, unfold the phone and wait for the app to finish resizing. Record whether the problem appears immediately, after a navigation action, or only after rotation.
  3. If the app offers orientation choices, test portrait and landscape on the inner screen. Do not force an orientation the app does not support; the purpose is to reveal whether one posture is usable.
  4. Close and reopen the app on each display. If it behaves differently after a cold launch than after unfolding, include both sequences in your notes.
  5. Repeat the same sequence with one unrelated app. If only one title fails, the app is the stronger suspect. If several unrelated apps show the same clipping or bars, investigate system settings and contact Vivo if the issue persists.

This is a diagnostic comparison, not a promise that switching displays fixes anything. It separates a display-wide problem from an app’s handling of changing dimensions.

Why an app can look wrong on a foldable

Android’s compatibility documentation identifies fixed orientation, fixed aspect ratio and lack of app resizability as common causes of large-screen display problems. An app may have been authored for a conventional phone width and instruct the system to preserve that shape. The system can then surround it with unused space rather than stretch it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Other layouts do stretch, but their components may not have been designed for the new width. Android Developers warns that components can become stretched and that non-scrolling layouts can leave controls inaccessible when display dimensions change. A button that is present in the app’s layout but outside the visible region is a layout failure, not evidence of a damaged OLED panel.

“Apps that restrict device orientation, aspect ratio, or app resizability might have display issues on Android 16, such as overlapping layouts.”

Android’s current guidance says Android 16 can override some orientation, aspect-ratio and resizability restrictions on displays whose smallest width is at least 600dp. Vivo’s India listing identifies Android 17 on the X Fold6, but that does not establish that Vivo enables a particular override, exposes it to users, or applies it identically in every region. Treat the platform explanation as a way to classify the symptom, not as proof of the cause on your handset.

Update the app and system before changing display behavior

Update the affected app

  1. Open the phone’s installed-app store and view available updates.
  2. Install the update for the affected app, if one is offered. If the store shows no update, note the installed version.
  3. Launch the app on the cover display, unfold, and repeat the exact test you recorded. An update can contain a fix, but compatibility is not guaranteed to change.

Check for a Vivo software update

  1. Open Settings and use the phone’s built-in search for the system or software update screen.
  2. Install an offered update only after the phone meets the update screen’s requirements, such as sufficient battery and storage.
  3. After restarting, repeat the cover-versus-inner comparison before changing any per-app display option.

Keep the previous app version and system version in your notes. If the problem remains, support staff can tell whether it started after a particular update. Do not report that an update “failed” merely because the layout did not change; an app may still lack a large-screen implementation.

Check the app’s own layout and full-screen options

Some apps include settings named tablet layout, large-screen mode, full screen, display size or orientation. Open the app’s settings and help pages and look for those controls before overriding anything at the phone level. If the app offers a tablet or expanded layout, enable it, close the app completely, and repeat the same test.

Do not confuse an in-app zoom control with an aspect-ratio fix. Zoom may enlarge text while leaving the underlying layout constrained. Record which option you changed so you can restore it if menus become harder to use.

Inspect per-app aspect-ratio controls cautiously

A Vivo-hosted help result titled “App aspect ratio settings” describes an option that can display an app in full-screen mode. The available documentation does not establish that the page applies to the X Fold6, nor does it identify a current menu path for every regional OriginOS build. Therefore, use Settings search for terms such as “aspect ratio,” “full screen,” or “app display” rather than relying on a route copied from another Vivo model.

If your phone actually exposes a per-app choice, note the original value before changing it. Test the affected app, first on the inner display and then on the cover display. A full-screen choice can remove bars, but it can also stretch content, crop controls or make touch targets unusable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Keep the full-screen choice if the app fills the inner display and all important controls remain visible in both orientations you use.
  • Restore the previous choice if text, controls or navigation become clipped, distorted or unreachable.
  • Do not change several unrelated display settings at once; you will lose the ability to identify which change mattered.

The absence of such a control is normal on a build that does not expose one. Do not install an unofficial tool or change hidden system properties merely to force a layout.

Use a comparison grid to isolate the cause

Test variable Result to record Interpretation
Cover versus inner display Works on both, fails only inside, or fails on both Inner-only failure suggests large-screen handling; failure on both points to a general app problem.
Portrait versus landscape One orientation is usable, both are affected, or the app rotates unexpectedly A single usable orientation may reflect the app’s fixed-orientation policy.
Bars versus stretch/crop Unused area, distorted controls, or hidden content Bars are usually containment; stretch or crop indicates the layout is adapting poorly.
Before versus after updates No change, improvement, or a new symptom Keep the exact versions; this evidence helps the developer reproduce the issue.
One app versus several apps/system UI Only one title, multiple unrelated titles, or the home interface too Isolated failure generally belongs with the app developer; broad failure warrants Vivo support.

When black bars are acceptable—and when they are not

Black bars or blank margins can be an intentional compatibility behavior. They preserve the app’s expected proportions and prevent controls from being stretched. If every control is visible, touch input works, and the bars appear only on the inner display, the limitation is inconvenient but not necessarily a defect in the phone.

Escalate the issue when bars cover content, prevent a required control from being reached, appear in Vivo system screens, or are accompanied by flicker, persistent artifacts, touch failure or crashes in multiple apps. Those symptoms are broader than an individual app’s aspect-ratio policy.

Fixes that often make the result worse

  • Forcing full screen without a baseline: If you do not capture the original behavior, you cannot tell whether the change helped. Record a screenshot first.
  • Changing display size or font size globally: Global scaling can alter every app and hide the original compatibility problem. Use it only for an accessibility need, not as a first troubleshooting step.
  • Clearing data immediately: This can remove sign-ins, downloads and local settings without correcting a layout limitation. Try the controlled comparison and updates first.
  • Installing modified APKs or “foldable fixes”: Unofficial packages can introduce security and stability risks and may make a support reproduction impossible.
  • Assuming another Vivo model’s menu applies: OriginOS labels and options can differ by region and release. Verify that the control exists on your own X Fold6 before following a model-specific guide.

Prepare a useful report for the app developer

Contact the app developer when one app remains wrong after updating and the same phone’s other apps behave normally. Include a concise reproduction sequence rather than only saying “not optimized for foldables.”

When Vivo support is the right next contact

Contact Vivo support when multiple unrelated apps or system screens show the same clipping, unexpected bars, touch misalignment, flicker or crashes. Provide the same model, region, software versions and visual evidence, and state whether the issue survives a restart and a system update.

Tell support whether the problem is limited to the inner display or appears on the cover screen too. A fault that follows the physical display across several apps is different from an app that fails only after a posture change. Support may ask for diagnostic logs or a reset; back up important data before any step that removes local content, and confirm what the reset will erase.

A decision path you can follow

  1. Describe it: classify the symptom as bars, phone-sized panel, stretching, cropped controls, rotation, restart or crash.
  2. Compare it: test the same app on cover and inner displays, then portrait and landscape where available.
  3. Update it: install app and system updates, restart, and repeat the identical test.
  4. Check options: inspect the app’s own layout controls and only then look for a verified per-app aspect-ratio setting.
  5. Undo harmful changes: restore the prior setting if full-screen mode makes controls or content worse.
  6. Escalate accurately: send an isolated app problem to its developer; send broad or system-wide display faults to Vivo.

Keep your screenshots, recordings and version notes together until the issue is resolved. They prevent support from having to guess which display, posture and software combination produced the failure.

What a successful result looks like

Success does not always mean that an app fills every pixel. The practical target is a stable layout in which required content and controls are visible, touch targets respond, orientation changes do not cause data loss, and the app does not crash when you unfold. If bars remain but the app is fully usable, leave the compatibility behavior in place rather than forcing a riskier stretch. If controls remain cut off or several apps show the same fault, preserve your evidence and escalate instead of repeatedly changing settings.
