When an app is letterboxed, stretched, clipped by the hinge, stuck in a rotation loop, or distorted after you fold or unfold your phone, the root problem is usually that the app is treating a changing app window like a fixed phone screen. Android may place a non-resizable or overly constrained activity in size-compatibility mode, while the app’s own layout and camera code continue using assumptions that no longer match the available window.
The reliable fix is to diagnose each posture and window separately, remove unnecessary manifest restrictions, calculate layouts from current window metrics, keep content clear of the fold, preserve state across activity recreation, and test camera and multi-window behavior independently. The steps below apply to developers maintaining an Android app and to testers isolating a compatibility defect.
What changes when an app runs on a foldable
A foldable does not provide one permanent screen rectangle. Depending on the device and how it is held, an app may run on a narrow cover display, a wide inner display, a half-open tabletop or book posture, split-screen, picture-in-picture (PiP), or a desktop-style window. The app window can change size, aspect ratio, orientation, and position without the user leaving the app.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAndroid treats those changes as window and configuration changes. If an activity is marked non-resizable or is restricted to a narrow range of orientations or aspect ratios, the system can use size-compatibility mode. The app keeps its expected aspect ratio inside a letterboxed area, and Android may show a control to restart the app at the new size. A non-resizable activity can also fail in multi-window. These are compatibility symptoms, not evidence that the hinge itself is defective.

Android Developers describes the design goal this way: layouts should be “responsive and adaptive” so they work across device screens and the different windows available in multi-window mode. On a foldable, that means the app must respond to the current window rather than infer a layout from the physical handset dimensions.
Identify the exact failure before changing code
Reproduce the problem deliberately and record the window in which it occurs. A layout that works on the outer display can fail on the inner display, and a failure in split-screen may have nothing to do with the unfolded layout.
| Observed symptom | Likely area to inspect first | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Black bars or a narrow app surrounded by empty space | Size-compatibility mode, fixed orientation, or aspect-ratio limits | Folded/unfolded state, orientation, whether a restart control appears |
| Controls are huge, tiny, stretched, or overlap | Phone-only layout assumptions and missing window-size breakpoints | Window width and height, split-screen or desktop mode, affected screen |
| Text, buttons, or dialogs cross the hinge | Posture and display-feature handling | Half-open angle, hinge location, whether the hinge occludes or separates content |
| Screen rotates repeatedly, flickers, or restarts | Orientation requests made during startup or based on physical rotation | Logcat configuration changes, requested orientation, activity recreation count |
| Form fields or navigation position reset | State not saved across recreation | Which values disappear and whether the activity is stopped or destroyed |
| Camera preview is sideways, cropped, stretched, or mirrored incorrectly | Camera sensor orientation, display rotation, crop, and aspect-ratio code | Front/back camera, folded/unfolded screen, portrait/landscape, preview and captured image |
Run a complete reproduction sequence
- Test every relevant posture. Check fully folded, fully unfolded, half-open tabletop, half-open book, portrait, and landscape. If the device supports an outer cover display, test that screen separately from the inner display.
- Test window modes. Resize the app in split-screen, enter and leave PiP where supported, use any desktop-window mode, and open attachment or floating windows. A window allocated by the system is often smaller than the physical display.
- Capture the symptom. Note letterboxing, clipping, overlap, hinge occlusion, rotation loops, camera distortion, or lost form state. Record whether the app restarts, whether a system restart affordance appears, and whether the issue occurs only after a fold or unfold.
- Measure the app window. Log the current window bounds and density at each state. Do not substitute the handset’s total display size for the portion actually assigned to the app.
- Check lifecycle events. Log activity creation, destruction, configuration changes, and saved-state restoration. A fold or unfold can stop and restart an activity; the app must retain the user’s context through that transition.
Remove manifest restrictions that prevent resizing
Open the application and activity declarations in AndroidManifest.xml. Inspect android:resizeableActivity, android:screenOrientation, android:minAspectRatio, and android:maxAspectRatio. Older applications commonly inherit restrictions that were reasonable for a single portrait phone but are harmful on a foldable.
<application android:resizeableActivity="true">
<activity
android:name=".MainActivity"
android:resizeableActivity="true" />
</application>
Set resizability at the activity or application level as appropriate for the app, and remove fixed-orientation or aspect-ratio declarations that are not required by the product. An activity-level declaration can override the application default, so inspect both locations. Also check libraries or product flavors that inject manifest values during the merge; the merged manifest is the one Android installs.
Do not use a broad aspect-ratio range merely to hide layout defects. If an activity genuinely needs a restriction, document the reason and test the resulting letterboxing and multi-window behavior. A non-resizable activity may crash when the system places it in multi-window, so a manifest change must be followed by lifecycle and UI testing rather than treated as a cosmetic fix.
Stop orientation loops and unnecessary restarts
A common foldable failure is an app that requests an orientation during onCreate(), receives a configuration change, recreates itself, and requests the same or another orientation again. The result is flicker, repeated restarts, or an apparent inability to settle after folding.

- Do not call
Activity#setRequestedOrientation()unconditionally fromonCreate()or another startup path. - Do not assume
Display.getRotation() == ROTATION_0means the app is in portrait. Physical display rotation and the app window’s current orientation are different concepts. - Do not choose a layout orientation from the handset’s physical rotation alone. Use current window dimensions and posture information.
- If a particular screen truly needs an orientation, request it only when entering that screen, avoid repeating the request after recreation, and verify that the restriction is acceptable on both cover and inner displays.
When diagnosing a loop, temporarily remove orientation requests and reproduce the fold. If the loop disappears, move orientation policy out of initialization and make it conditional on the actual screen requirement rather than a device-wide assumption.

Use Jetpack WindowManager’s WindowMetrics and window size classes to determine the space currently allocated to the app. This is essential in split-screen and desktop windows, where the physical display may be large but the app window is narrow. Recalculate when the window changes.
Choose meaningful breakpoints for the product. A compact window might use one pane and a bottom navigation bar; a medium window might place navigation beside content; an expanded window might show a list and detail pane together. The exact breakpoint values belong to the app’s design system, but the decision should be based on current width and height, not on a model name or a hard-coded “tablet” flag.
val metrics = WindowMetricsCalculator.getOrCreate()
.computeCurrentWindowMetrics(activity)
val bounds = metrics.bounds
val widthPx = bounds.width()
val heightPx = bounds.height()
Convert dimensions using the current density, then select or reflow components at stable thresholds. A responsive single layout is appropriate when only spacing or column count changes. Use posture- or size-specific layouts when navigation, pane count, or content placement changes materially.
- Constrain maximum widths for reading columns, forms, and dialogs so they do not stretch across the entire inner display.
- Use flexible constraints and weights carefully; an unconstrained row can make controls microscopic or push them off-screen.
- Allow important content to scroll. Landscape and short windows can remove vertical space even when width increases.
- Recompute insets and available bounds after every window-size change. Cached measurements from the phone layout become stale after unfolding.
- Verify touch targets and text scaling at each breakpoint, including the largest accessibility font setting your app supports.
Keep content out of the fold and hinge
The fold is a real occlusion or separation boundary. In a half-open tabletop or book posture, text and controls placed across it may be unreadable or impossible to touch. Obtain the device’s display-feature information through the window-management APIs and treat an occluding fold or hinge as an exclusion region.
For a book posture, placing navigation or a list on one side and detail content on the other can use the two regions effectively. For a tabletop posture, move controls and the primary content into the upper or lower region rather than centering a dialog across the crease. A menu, confirmation dialog, keyboard accessory, or camera shutter control should never depend on the user reaching through the hinge.

- Apply safe insets to the feature’s bounds before placing buttons, text, dialogs, and interactive overlays.
- Keep critical status messages and error actions entirely within one reachable region.
- Retest when the device changes from book to tabletop; the useful split direction can change with posture.
Preserve state when the window changes
Android Developers notes that an app can stop and restart as a device folds or unfolds. Even when the process survives, the activity may be recreated for a configuration or window-size change. Users should return to the same form values, navigation destination, scroll position, selected item, and in-progress operation.
- Put transient UI state in a lifecycle-aware state holder such as a
ViewModel, and use saved-state mechanisms for values that must survive activity recreation. - Save text input, checked options, selected tabs, list position, navigation route, and any pending draft before the activity stops.
- Restore state after the new layout has been selected, because a two-pane layout may represent the same destination differently from a one-pane layout.
- Persist durable drafts or transactions separately when the user expects them to survive process death, not just a fold.
- Test a fold during text entry, while a dialog is open, during a network request, and after rotating inside split-screen.
Do not “fix” a reset by blocking all configuration changes. Suppressing recreation can leave resources, dimensions, and view hierarchies stale. Let Android recreate when appropriate and make restoration reliable.
Debug camera previews as a separate problem
Camera code combines sensor orientation, display rotation, preview transformation, crop policy, and the aspect ratio of the active window. A preview can therefore fail even after the rest of the app adapts correctly.

- Test front and rear cameras independently, if both are supported.
- Test portrait and landscape on the cover display and inner display, folded and unfolded.
- Compare the preview with a captured image. A sideways preview, stretched faces, or a crop that changes unexpectedly identifies a transformation or aspect-ratio mismatch.
- Recalculate the preview transform when the window or display changes. Do not retain a matrix computed only at activity startup.
- Choose a deliberate policy for cropping versus letterboxing. Preserve the camera image’s aspect ratio unless the product explicitly accepts cropping, and keep shutter and switching controls within safe, reachable regions.
- Repeat tests while entering and leaving multi-window and PiP where camera use is permitted.
Camera behavior also depends on which physical screen is active. A preview configured for the inner display can appear sideways or cropped when the user moves to an outer cover screen, so screen-specific testing is mandatory.
Understand Android 16’s resizability baseline
Android 16 (API level 36) changes the baseline on displays whose smallest width is at least 600dp. For apps targeting API 36, Android treats activities on those large displays as resizable and allows them to enter multi-window. The inner displays of many large foldables fall into this category.
Displays smaller than 600dp remain exceptions. Many outer cover screens and some flippable devices can therefore continue to expose legacy behavior. Do not assume that passing an unfolded test proves the cover display is supported.

Google Play is scheduled to require apps to target API level 36 in August 2026. Apps that still rely on fixed orientation or aspect-ratio assumptions should be tested against the Android 16 behavior before that deadline. Use the compatibility framework’s UNIVERSAL_RESIZABLE_BY_DEFAULT flag to expose problems that a legacy device configuration may hide.
Android large-screen guidance currently describes more than 300 million Android large-screen devices in use, including tablets, foldables, ChromeOS devices, car displays, and TVs. That figure is contextual and was current when the Android Developers page was accessed in 2026; it is not a measure of your app’s user base.
Use a foldable test matrix instead of one happy-path test
| Dimension | Minimum cases | Defects this reveals |
|---|---|---|
| Posture | Folded, unfolded, half-open book, half-open tabletop | Hinge overlap, wrong pane arrangement, stale measurements |
| Screen | Outer cover and inner display where available | Unsupported width, camera transform errors, orientation assumptions |
| Orientation | Portrait and landscape | Clipped controls, rotation loops, inaccessible forms |
| Windowing | Full screen, split-screen resize, desktop window, PiP entry and exit | Incorrect window metrics, lifecycle loss, non-resizable crashes |
| Content state | Empty form, long text, validation error, open dialog, scrolled list | Lost state, missing scroll, dialogs crossing the hinge |
| Camera | Front/rear, preview and capture, every screen and orientation | Sideways, stretched, mirrored, or unexpectedly cropped output |
| Instances and attachments | Multiple app instances and attachment windows where supported | Shared-state collisions and incorrect bounds assumptions |
Pixel Fold and tablet emulators are useful for repeatable posture and size tests. Combine emulator coverage with at least one physical foldable when camera, hinge placement, or vendor-specific window behavior matters.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose the right implementation strategy
| Approach | Best fit | Strength | Risk if misapplied |
|---|---|---|---|
| Responsive single layout | Only spacing, column count, or control sizing changes | Less code and a shared component tree | Complex navigation or hinge placement becomes a collection of fragile conditionals |
| Size-specific adaptive layout | Compact, medium, and expanded windows need different pane structures | Clear behavior at window-size thresholds | Unrestored state can strand the user when switching structures |
| Posture-specific layout | Book or tabletop posture changes where content must be placed | Controls can avoid occlusion and use separated regions intentionally | Testing burden grows if posture detection is tied to a single device model |
| Hybrid approach | Most screens reflow, but camera, media, or key workflows need special handling | Concentrates complexity where it affects usability | Special cases can drift from the common window-metrics policy |
Evaluate each approach against current-window adaptation, folded/unfolded and half-open behavior, continuity after recreation, multi-window and PiP, camera correctness, and hinge accessibility. A layout is not foldable-ready merely because it scales without crashing.
Symptom-specific fixes
The app is letterboxed after unfolding
Inspect resizeableActivity, fixed screenOrientation, and minimum or maximum aspect ratios. Remove unnecessary restrictions, target the current Android API policy, and verify the merged manifest. If the app is intentionally constrained, explain the limitation in product terms and ensure the restart control does not discard unsaved work.

Controls disappear in landscape or split-screen
Measure the actual window, add scrolling, and move controls into a responsive column or secondary pane. Check large text settings and keyboard visibility; both reduce usable height. Do not solve the problem by shrinking touch targets below an accessible size.

The hinge covers a dialog or button
Read display-feature bounds, classify an occluding fold, and place the dialog wholly in one safe region. For a book posture, split navigation and content; for tabletop, move the primary action to the reachable region above or below the crease.
The app rotates or restarts endlessly
Remove startup orientation requests, stop deriving orientation from Display.getRotation(), and log every request and recreation. Apply orientation policy only to screens that require it and make the decision idempotent.
Form input vanishes after folding
Save the draft and navigation state before stop, restore it after selecting the new layout, and test process death separately. A successful visual reflow is not sufficient if the user loses entered data.
The camera preview is sideways or distorted
Recompute the sensor-to-window transform for each active screen and orientation, then validate crop and preview aspect ratio against a captured image. Test front and rear cameras independently and repeat after every fold or unfold.
Release checklist
- The merged manifest permits resizing unless a documented product requirement says otherwise.
- No unconditional orientation request runs during activity creation.
- Layouts use current window metrics and meaningful size thresholds.
- Long content scrolls in short or landscape windows.
- Maximum widths prevent forms and reading columns from becoming uncomfortably wide.
- Occluding folds and hinges are treated as safe-area boundaries.
- Text, drafts, navigation, scroll position, and pending work survive recreation.
- Camera preview and capture are correct on every supported screen and orientation.
- Folded, unfolded, book, tabletop, split-screen, desktop-window, PiP, and multiple-instance cases have been exercised.
- Android 16 behavior has been checked for API 36 targeting, including sub-600dp cover-screen exceptions.
The practical diagnosis
Most foldable adaptation failures come from one of three assumptions: that the app always owns the full physical display, that orientation is determined by a fixed phone posture, or that an activity will not be recreated. Remove those assumptions systematically. Let the current app window drive layout, treat the hinge as an occlusion boundary, preserve state through lifecycle changes, and give camera code its own rotation and aspect-ratio tests. That combination addresses the letterboxing, overlap, restart, and camera symptoms users notice when they move between screens.
