If an app keeps closing, freezing, or crashing on a Google TV Streamer, start with the affected app: update it in Google Play, then force-stop it from Settings > Apps. If the problem remains, restart the Streamer, install any available system update, and only then consider clearing that app’s data. Google directs users to the app developer when those crash-specific steps fail. These menu names can vary with the device and Google TV software version.
First, identify the failure pattern
Before changing settings, note exactly what happens. Does one app fail while other apps work, or do several apps close? Does the crash occur as soon as the app opens, when a video starts, or after a particular button or screen? Write down the app’s name and version if it is visible, plus the Google TV Streamer’s software version.
Also note the final screen you see. An app that disappears and returns to the home screen is different from an app that remains open while a title buffers or displays a network error. If the home screen, Settings, and unrelated apps are all freezing, record that broader behavior too. This gives you a clearer report if you need help from the developer.
This distinction helps you choose the least disruptive path. A single failing app should lead you toward that app’s update, force-stop, local-data reset, and developer support. If several apps fail or the whole interface is unstable, include a device restart and system-update check. Keep the order of your steps written down. If the app starts working after one change, you will know which action helped; if it does not, you can tell support exactly what has already been tried.
1. Update the crashing app from Google Play
Google’s crash-specific guidance starts with installing the latest version of the affected app. An update can include a compatibility fix or a correction for a bug that causes a crash.
- From the Google TV home screen, open Google Play Store.
- Open the profile icon.
- Choose Manage apps & games, then Updates.
- Select Update all, or update the app that is crashing.
- Wait for the installation to finish, then open the app again and repeat the action that previously caused the crash.
Google documents this route in Fix app crashes on Google TV. The wording and location of the update controls can differ by device or software release. If the app does not appear in the update list, open its Play Store page and check whether an Update button is available.

Update only after the download and installation have completed. If you launch the app while an update is still pending, you may be testing the old version. When several apps are outdated, using Update all is the documented option, but you can update just the failing app first when you want to isolate the change.
If Play Store itself will not open or several downloads fail, continue with the device restart and system-update steps below rather than repeatedly retrying the same download. That pattern points to a wider device or store problem, not necessarily a defect in the individual app.
2. Force-stop the affected app
Force-stopping closes the app process so that it can start cleanly. It is Google’s direct next step for an app that crashes on Google TV and does not remove your account or app data.
- Open Settings from the Google TV home screen.
- Select Apps.
- Choose the app that keeps crashing. Depending on the interface, you may need to open a list of all installed apps first.
- Select Force stop, then confirm.
- Return to the home screen, reopen the app, and test the same screen or playback action.
Use force-stop after updating, or perform both steps when the app is already current. If the app immediately closes again, do not assume that reinstalling hardware or buying replacement accessories will fix it; the documented crash flow is software-focused.

Force-stop is deliberately less disruptive than clearing data. It ends the current process but leaves sign-in details, preferences, and locally stored app information in place. After confirming the prompt, open the app normally rather than launching it from an old notification or shortcut, then repeat the action that triggered the failure.
3. Restart Google TV Streamer and check for a system update
A restart is the next low-impact step when the interface, Play Store, or multiple apps behave abnormally. Google’s broader performance guidance lists Settings > System > Restart.
- Open Settings.
- Choose System.
- Select Restart and confirm.
- After the home screen returns, open the failing app and test it again.
Google’s documented path for checking the operating-system update is Settings > System > About > System update. Install an available update, allow the Streamer to restart if requested, and then test the app. Exact labels and menu placement may vary by Google TV device and software version. Restarting and updating the system are especially sensible when more than one app crashes, the home screen freezes, or the Play Store cannot complete updates. They are general device-maintenance steps, not a promise that every app crash is caused by the operating system.

Do not treat a successful launch alone as proof that the problem is gone if the crash occurs only during playback or after opening a particular profile.
4. Clear data for the affected app only if it still crashes
If updating, force-stopping, restarting, and checking the system update do not help, clearing the app’s local data is a reasonable later step. Google includes this action in its broader Google TV troubleshooting sequence for app or playback problems; it is not presented as a guaranteed cure for every Streamer crash.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Apps, then See all apps if that option appears.
- Select the affected app.
- Choose Clear data and confirm.
- Open the app and complete its initial setup again.
Clearing data resets the app’s local state. You may have to sign in again, restore app preferences, select a profile, or reconfigure downloads and other local settings. It does not erase the entire Google TV Streamer, but it can remove information stored locally by that app. If you are unsure which account or password the app uses, verify that before clearing data.

Because this step removes the app’s saved local state, record any settings you want to reproduce first. If the app supports multiple profiles, note which profile was active. If you use downloaded content or custom preferences, expect to configure those again. Clear data for the affected app only; clearing every app creates unnecessary setup work and does not establish a cause.

If the app still crashes immediately after its data is reset, that result is useful to report to the developer because it shows the failure is not simply a stale local session.
When the symptom is playback or connectivity rather than a crash
An app that closes or returns to the home screen follows Google’s crash guidance above. A video that buffers, refuses to start, or reports a connection error is a different symptom. In that case, Google’s broader troubleshooting page may point you toward network and playback checks. Those checks are relevant to connection problems, but they should not be described as a proven remedy for an app process that crashes.
Make the distinction by observing the final state:
- Crash: the app disappears, returns to the home screen, freezes and then closes, or repeatedly fails at launch.
- Playback problem: the app stays open but a title will not start, pauses to buffer, or displays a network message.
- Device problem: the home screen, Settings, or several unrelated apps freeze or restart.
For a mixed case—for example, one app crashes only after a long buffering attempt—complete the crash steps first, then use the broader device guidance for the network symptom. Keep those observations separate when you contact support so the developer knows whether the app process or the connection is failing.

When an app still crashes after its update, a force-stop, a restart, and the available system update, Google says to let the app developer know. The developer controls the app’s code and can determine whether a particular release, account state, content item, or device configuration is involved.
Send a concise report that includes:
- the exact app name;
- the app version, if shown in the Play Store or app settings;
- the Google TV Streamer model and Google TV or Android software version;
- what you were doing when the crash occurred, such as launching, starting playback, opening a profile, or selecting a setting;
- whether the crash happens every time or only with a particular title, account, or action;
- which troubleshooting steps you already completed, including updating, force-stopping, restarting, and clearing data if you did that.
Include the point at which the app closes and what appears afterward. “Crashes at launch” is different from “returns to the home screen after selecting a profile” or “fails only when one title starts.” If the app version or system version is not visible, say that rather than guessing.

That information is more actionable than saying only that the app “does not work.” Google’s crash article, Fix app crashes on Google TV, is the starting reference for the escalation recommendation. Use the developer’s support link in the app’s Play Store listing or its official help channel; do not assume Google can repair a defect in a third-party app.
6. Treat factory reset as a last resort
Do not jump straight to a factory reset for a single crashing app. Google warns, “A factory reset erases all your data from your device.” A reset can remove accounts, settings, and locally stored device information; on many devices, apps and content must then be downloaded again.

Before considering it, complete the lower-impact steps and determine whether the problem is limited to one app. A reset is more disruptive than clearing one app’s data and still may not fix a defect in the app itself.
- Confirm that you know the Google account and other service credentials needed to set the device up again.
- Expect to reinstall apps and restore preferences after the reset.
- Record any device settings you will need to recreate.
- Use instructions written specifically for Google TV Streamer or your exact device. Reset procedures differ by manufacturer and device; do not borrow button sequences from another model.
A reset should therefore be considered only for persistent, broader device trouble after app-level and system-level troubleshooting. If one third-party app alone still crashes, developer support is the more targeted destination. If the device is unresponsive, use the unresponsive-device guidance rather than repeatedly forcing power changes or trying an unrelated model’s button sequence.

The documented remedies are software actions inside Google TV and support from the app developer. Replacing the Streamer, adding an Ethernet cable, buying replacement power accessories, or replacing the remote and batteries is not established as a fix for an app that closes. Those hardware checks may be appropriate for separate power, control, or network symptoms, but they do not replace the crash workflow.
Likewise, Google’s reviewed crash guidance does not recommend third-party cleanup or optimization utilities. Installing an unverified “booster” can add another variable while you are trying to isolate the failing app. Stay with the built-in Google TV controls and the app publisher’s official support route unless a separate hardware symptom points elsewhere.

A low-risk troubleshooting checklist
- Write down whether one app or several apps fail.
- Note when the crash occurs: launch, playback, a specific title, or a specific control.
- Open Google Play and update the affected app.
- Open Settings > Apps, select the app, choose Force stop, and confirm.
- Restart through Settings > System > Restart.
- Check Settings > System > About > System update.
- If the same app still fails, consider Settings > Apps > See all apps > [app] > Clear data, knowing that sign-in and setup may be required again.
- Give the app developer the app version, Streamer/software details, crash timing, and steps already tried.
