Start by identifying exactly what has stopped updating. An Android phone and desktop can remain paired while only messages, photos, calls, notifications, or apps fail. That requires a different fix from a complete connection failure. Also check whether you are troubleshooting a desktop companion such as Microsoft Phone Link or Android’s separate Google Account synchronization.

For a Phone Link example, work through power, internet, account, battery, permission, feature-setting, update, and router checks in that order. Reset or unlink only after those simpler tests. The steps below use Microsoft’s current guidance, while noting where another Android companion may use different menus.

First identify what is not syncing

Write down the exact symptom before changing settings. Ask three questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Are the Android phone and Windows PC still shown as linked?
  2. Did every Phone Link feature stop updating, or only one feature?
  3. Is the data supposed to come from the desktop companion, or from an Android Google Account?
What you see What it suggests Start with
The phone is missing, disconnected, or will not pair A connection, account, network, or power problem Check that both devices are on, online, using the same Microsoft account, and not being restricted by Battery saver.
Phone Link is connected, but only messages, photos, calls, notifications, or apps fail A feature-specific permission, toggle, or service problem Open the matching feature settings and check the Android permission required by that feature.
Notifications do not arrive but other content works Notification permission, Do not disturb, or the notification feature toggle Allow Link to Windows notifications on Android, turn off Do not disturb while testing, and enable notifications in Phone Link.
Google contacts, mail, calendar, or other Google data is stale inside Android Android account synchronization, not necessarily a desktop companion Use Google’s account-sync checks rather than resetting Phone Link.
Updates appear delayed rather than permanently absent Power management, a temporary app state, or a network interruption Keep both devices awake and online, update both apps, then close and reopen them.

Microsoft’s Phone Link troubleshooting guide has separate paths for individual features. Do not assume a photo-only or notification-only failure means the entire pairing is broken.

Keep Phone Link sync separate from Google Account sync

Phone Link and Link to Windows transfer or expose selected phone features to a Windows PC. Android’s Google Account sync keeps account data current on the phone. They can fail independently: a Google Account may sync normally while Phone Link is disconnected, or Phone Link may remain connected while Google data is stale.

For Google data, use Google’s Fix account sync issues instructions. That page covers automatic sync, internet access, sign-in ability, Android updates, and manually starting an account sync. Some of its listed steps apply only to Android 14 and later, so menu names and availability can differ on older releases.

Check the Phone Link prerequisites

Before changing app data or unlinking anything, verify the conditions that allow the two devices to communicate.

1. Turn on both devices and verify internet access

The PC and phone must be powered on and able to reach the internet. Microsoft recommends using the same trusted Wi-Fi network for the fastest and most reliable Phone Link connection; during setup, its requirements guide also recommends keeping the devices nearby and on the same Wi-Fi. Confirm that the PC is not offline and that the phone can load a webpage.

Being on the same Wi-Fi does not guarantee communication. A router can deliberately prevent wireless clients from talking to each other; that issue is covered in the network-isolation section below.

2. Confirm the same Microsoft account

Phone Link on Windows and Link to Windows on Android must use the same Microsoft account. Open the account information in each app and compare the signed-in address. A phone can appear to have the app installed and still fail to pair if one app is signed into a different account.

3. Temporarily disable Battery saver

Turn Battery saver off on both the Android phone and the Windows PC while diagnosing. Microsoft warns that power-saving modes can affect connectivity and interfere with important notifications. Once synchronization works, you can re-enable power saving and check whether that setting is the trigger.

Battery and background-activity labels vary by Android manufacturer. Look for the system’s Battery saver, Power saving, or background restriction control and allow Link to Windows to operate while you test.

4. Check Android permissions and notification controls

Open Android’s app permissions for Link to Windows and make sure the permissions required by the feature you are testing are allowed. If notifications are the problem, allow Link to Windows to send notifications and turn off Do not disturb temporarily. A notification permission can be revoked after an Android update or when an app has not been used for a while.

Also check Phone Link’s own feature switches. A disabled switch can make one category appear unsynchronized even though pairing is healthy. Enable only the feature you need to test first, then check whether new content appears.

5. Decide whether mobile data is allowed

Link to Windows can sync over mobile data when that option is enabled in its settings. If it is disabled, the phone may wait for Wi-Fi even though cellular internet works. Users with limited data allowances may prefer to leave the option off and test on Wi-Fi instead. Treat this as a connection-policy choice, not as evidence that the phone or PC is defective.

Update both apps, then restart them

Out-of-date companion apps can leave one device waiting for a state the other no longer uses. Microsoft’s troubleshooting steps are:

  1. Check for available updates for Phone Link on Windows.
  2. Check for available updates for Link to Windows on Android.
  3. Install the updates on both devices.
  4. Close and reopen both apps.
  5. Wait a few minutes for the devices to be recognized again.
  6. If the Android app remains in an updating or recognition state, restart the Android phone and try again.

Use the update controls currently shown by Windows and Android rather than relying on an old version number or a copied menu path. Microsoft’s labels and minimum-version requirements can change as the apps are updated.

After reopening, test with a newly generated event—for example, send a new message or create a fresh notification—rather than expecting an item that was already missed to be replayed immediately.

When same Wi-Fi still does not connect: inspect router isolation

If both devices are on the same Wi-Fi and online but cannot communicate, Microsoft identifies Wireless Isolation or AP Isolation on the router as a possible cause. These settings intentionally block device-to-device traffic between wireless clients. The result can look like a Phone Link failure even though internet browsing works on both devices.

Sign in to the router’s administration interface only if you manage that network. Look for Wireless Isolation, AP Isolation, Client Isolation, or a similarly named setting and check whether it is enabled for the network being used. If the PC is on a managed office, school, hotel, or guest network, ask the network administrator to check the setting. Do not buy a replacement router based on this symptom alone; the documented remedy is to inspect the configuration.

Microsoft states: “If both of your devices are using the same Wi-Fi network but you still see an error message, this could be caused by a setting on your router.” This is a configuration possibility, not proof that the router is faulty.

Feature affected Checks to make Interpretation
Messages Confirm the messages feature is enabled in Phone Link and that the Android app has the permissions it requests for messaging access. If new messages work after the toggle is enabled, pairing was intact and the feature setting was the blocker.
Photos Confirm the photos feature is enabled and test with a newly taken image. Check any Android permission requested by Link to Windows. An older image may not appear immediately; use a new photo to test current transfer.
Calls Confirm the calls feature is enabled and that both devices remain connected to the required local network and account. If calls fail while other features work, treat it as a feature path rather than a complete unlink.
Notifications Allow Android notification access for Link to Windows, turn off Do not disturb while testing, and enable notifications in Phone Link. Missing notifications with working messages or photos usually points to notification controls.
Apps Confirm the apps feature is enabled and that the phone remains awake, online, and paired. A feature toggle or device state can block app access without removing the overall connection.

The exact permissions and available features depend on the phone, Windows configuration, and current app versions. If a feature-specific guide is available inside Microsoft Support, follow that guide instead of applying a reset intended for a completely disconnected device.

Reset or relink only after basic checks

Resetting the pairing removes a useful diagnostic state, so leave it until power, account, permission, update, and network checks have failed. Save any information you need from the current pairing before proceeding.

For a phone that used to connect but no longer reconnects

  1. Update Link to Windows on the Android phone and Phone Link on Windows.
  2. On Android, sign out of Link to Windows and unlink the phone.
  3. In Phone Link settings on the PC, add the phone again.
  4. Restart Phone Link if the device does not appear after adding it.
  5. Complete the on-screen pairing process and test a new message or notification.

Microsoft describes this sequence in its troubleshooting guidance. It may require you to grant Android permissions again because unlinking can remove the previous authorization.

If Phone Link asks for a QR code

Update both apps before scanning. Then follow the QR-code or on-screen relinking flow shown by Phone Link and Link to Windows. If the scan succeeds but the pairing stalls, return to the account and same-network checks rather than repeatedly scanning an unchanged code.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What a reset can and cannot tell you

A successful relink shows that the account, network, and current app pairing can be established again; it does not identify which earlier setting caused the failure. If relinking fails immediately, record the exact error, whether both devices are on the same Wi-Fi, and which account is displayed before contacting Microsoft or the companion app’s vendor.

A practical diagnostic sequence

When several causes are plausible, run one controlled test at a time. This prevents a change in one layer from being mistaken for a fix in another.

  1. Classify the symptom: complete disconnection, one feature, delayed transfer, or Google Account data.
  2. Check pairing and authentication: verify the same Microsoft account and whether Phone Link still lists the phone.
  3. Check transport: confirm internet access, nearby devices, and the same trusted Wi-Fi; if Wi-Fi is shared but communication fails, inspect isolation settings.
  4. Check power policy: disable Battery saver and keep both devices awake during the test.
  5. Check authorization: review Android permissions, notification access, Do not disturb, and the relevant Phone Link feature toggle.
  6. Check software state: update both apps, close and reopen them, wait for recognition, and restart the Android phone if the update state lingers.
  7. Relink: only after the preceding checks fail, sign out and unlink on Android, add the phone again from Phone Link settings, and restart Phone Link if needed.
  8. Escalate with evidence: provide the companion name, affected feature, account status, network type, error text, and the steps that changed the behavior.

This order separates authentication and pairing problems from data-transfer problems. It also prevents a Google Account sync issue from being “fixed” by unnecessarily resetting a desktop companion.

What not to conclude from a failed sync

  • A shared Wi-Fi name does not prove that the router permits local device traffic; isolation may still be enabled.
  • A connected Phone Link session does not prove that every feature has permission to work.
  • A stale Google Account item does not prove that Phone Link is broken.
  • A temporary delay does not establish permanent data loss; update recognition can take a few minutes.
  • These checks do not justify buying a new phone, PC, router, cable, accessory, or repair utility. The documented remedies concern accounts, app updates, power settings, permissions, network configuration, and relinking.

When to use the companion vendor’s instructions

The menu paths and feature list above are specific to Microsoft Phone Link and Link to Windows. Other Android desktop companions may use different account systems, permissions, transport methods, or reset controls. Preserve the same diagnostic separation—whole connection versus one feature, pairing versus transfer, local network versus internet, and desktop sync versus Android account sync—but use the companion’s current support documentation for its exact buttons and requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No published failure-rate or cause-frequency statistic establishes which problem is “most common.” Support guidance provides checks, not a controlled diagnosis of your particular phone, PC, account, or router.

When to escalate

Contact the companion’s support channel after updating both apps, confirming the account and network, checking power and permissions, and attempting the documented relink. Include the Android and Windows versions if requested, the companion app names, the single feature or full connection affected, the exact error message, and whether the devices are on a managed or guest Wi-Fi network. That information lets support distinguish a pairing failure from a feature-permission or router-isolation problem.
