If an Xbox Series X game stops launching immediately after you install or reorder mods, treat the mod state, Creations cache, Reserved Space, or a damaged save as the likely cause before assuming the console has failed. Fully quit the game, power-cycle the console, disable every mod, and try an unmodded save. If that does not work, clear only the title’s Reserved Space, test an earlier save, and remove the local save copy only when you understand how cloud synchronization will restore it. Reinstall the game after those steps fail—not before.
This sequence applies particularly to mod-enabled Bethesda titles such as Fallout 4, Skyrim, and Starfield, but the same logic works for any Xbox game that stores downloadable creations or add-on data separately from the main installation.
First, identify exactly what stopped working
Write down the symptom before changing files. A crash at startup, an endless loading screen, a return to the Xbox Home screen, and a Mods or Creations connection error can have different causes. Also record the last mod you installed, any load-order change, and whether the game updated just before the failure.

A game update is a particularly strong clue. Bethesda states that Creations and add-ons may not work correctly until their creators update them for the new game version. In that situation, repeatedly reinstalling the same incompatible mod will not repair the launch process.

Use the low-risk recovery sequence first
Work from reversible changes toward destructive ones. Do not delete saves while you are still testing whether a mod cache is the problem.
- Fully quit the game from the Xbox Home screen.
- Power-cycle the Series X.
- Launch with every mod disabled.
- Clear only the title’s Reserved Space if the failure remains.
- Try an earlier or unmodded save without overwriting your only working save.
- Check network and service status if the problem is limited to the Mods or Creations menu.
- Reinstall the game only after the preceding tests fail.
Step 1: power-cycle the Xbox Series X and disable all mods
Fully quit before restarting
Press the Xbox button, highlight the affected game in the Home or guide view, press the Menu button, and choose Quit. A suspended game can retain the same failing state, so switching to another app without quitting is not a reliable test.
Perform a full power cycle
- Press and hold the Xbox button on the front of the console for about 10 seconds, until the Series X shuts down completely.
- Wait at least 30 seconds after the console turns off.
- Turn the console on again and start the game.
This clears temporary system state without deleting installed games, profiles, or saves. Bethesda’s stuck-save guidance begins with a power cycle, followed by deactivating mods.
Disable every mod, not just the last one installed
At the game’s Mods or Creations screen, deactivate all entries. If the title links mods to a Bethesda account or profile, sign in to that profile in a browser or on another device and disable the mods there as well. A load order can remain broken even when the newest mod is removed, because dependencies, patches, and generated data from other entries may still be present.
Launch the game with a completely unmodded profile or character when possible. If the unmodded launch succeeds, the console and base installation are probably healthy; re-enable content later in small groups so the offending entry can be identified.

Step 2: clear Reserved Space without deleting your save
Reserved Space is the title-specific area Xbox uses for local mod and add-on data. Clearing it removes that cached mod state; it is not the same as deleting your profile’s saved games.
Exact Xbox menu path
- Open My Games & Apps from the Xbox dashboard.
- Select Games.
- Highlight the affected title; do not launch it.
- Press the Menu button on the controller.
- Choose Manage Game.
- Open Saved Data.
- Select Reserved Space.
- Press the Menu button and choose Clear reserved space.
Confirm that the item you selected is labeled Reserved Space. Do not select your gamertag or profile save. Bethesda specifically warns that the actual save file must not be deleted during this cleanup.

If Reserved Space will not clear
Cancel the operation, power-cycle the console again, and repeat the same path. If the entry still refuses to clear, make sure the game is fully quit and no update or installation is running. Do not escalate to deleting the profile save simply because the cache command failed.
What to expect after the cache is cleared
The game may show no installed mods, ask you to download creations again, or rebuild its load-order information. That is expected. Start the title with no mods first. If the base game reaches the menu and an unmodded save loads, add creations back one at a time or in very small groups, starting with required framework entries and ending with cosmetic or large world changes.
Step 3: test an earlier or unmodded save
Some saves are dependent on scripts, items, or world edits supplied by a mod. Removing that mod can leave the save unable to complete its loading process even though the base game itself starts normally.

Choose the safest test
- Load an earlier save made before the failing mod was installed.
- Load an unmodded character or a new game.
- Use a manual save rather than an autosave created during the crash or infinite loading screen.
Do not overwrite your only working save while testing. If an earlier save opens, keep it as a recovery point and make a new manual save under a distinct name before experimenting with mods again.

If an earlier or unmodded save loads but the newest save does not, the failure is probably tied to the save’s mod dependencies rather than the console. Keep the successful save, leave the incompatible mod disabled, and reintroduce content only after checking whether the mod creator has released a version compatible with the current game update.
If no save loads but the title reaches its main menu, continue with Reserved Space cleanup and local-save recovery. If the title cannot reach its menu even with all mods disabled, proceed to the installation and service checks below.
Step 4: protect cloud saves before removing local data
When local save data appears corrupted, remove the console copy only after confirming that the desired save is synchronized to the cloud. Xbox presents different deletion choices, and they do not have the same risk.
Delete the local console copy only
In Manage Game → Saved Data, select the local save entry for your profile and choose the option that removes it from the console only. Bethesda explains that Delete from console removes the local copy and allows it to be retrieved from the cloud the next time you play.

After starting the game, allow synchronization to finish. Do not interrupt the download by quitting or turning off the console. Verify that the expected character and save timestamps are present before saving new progress.
Never use Delete everywhere as a troubleshooting shortcut
Delete everywhere removes the save from the console, the Xbox cloud copy, and other consoles using that account. Treat it as an irreversible last resort, not as a way to refresh a broken mod state. If you are unsure which copy is current, stop and preserve the local data until you can verify the cloud status.
Step 5: separate a Mods or Creations connection problem from a launch problem
If the game launches normally but the Mods or Creations screen freezes, times out, or reports that it cannot connect, the immediate issue may be service access rather than a damaged installation.
- Check Xbox service status for an outage.
- Check Bethesda’s service notices for maintenance or account issues.
- On Xbox, open Settings → General → Network settings and run Test network connection.
- Restart the router and wait for it to reconnect fully.
- Try a wired connection or a different network, such as a phone hotspot, only as a diagnostic test.
A successful network test does not repair an invalid load order. These steps only establish whether the console can reach the mod service. If the base game still crashes after all mods are disabled, return to Reserved Space and save testing rather than repeatedly changing network settings.

Game updates can change files, scripts, or interfaces that a creation depends on. Bethesda’s support guidance says creations and add-ons may not work properly after a recent update until their creators update them.

How to handle a post-update failure
- Note the date and version of the game update.
- Disable every creation and confirm whether the unmodded game launches.
- Check each mod creator’s release notes for a compatible update.
- Do not assume that an older patch, script extender, or dependency remains valid after the base game changes.
- Keep a clean save from before re-enabling content.
If the game works unmodded but fails as soon as one creation is enabled, leave that entry disabled. Contacting the creator with the game version, console model, exact symptom, and load order is more useful than reinstalling the console or deleting saves.

A reinstall is appropriate when the game still fails to start after all mods are disabled, Reserved Space has been cleared, and the save tests do not identify a bad save. Bethesda recommends completely uninstalling and reinstalling the title when clearing Reserved Space does not resolve the startup issue.
Before uninstalling
- Confirm that your intended saves are synchronized to Xbox cloud storage.
- Record which mods were installed so you can avoid restoring the suspected one.
- Check whether the title is on an external drive; if so, consider moving or reinstalling it on the internal drive as a separate storage test.
- Make sure you know whether you own a disc or digital license and have the required disc or account available.
Reinstall procedure
- Open My Games & Apps → Games.
- Highlight the title, press Menu, and choose Manage Game and Add-ons.
- Select the game and choose Uninstall all, then confirm.
- Restart the Series X after the uninstall completes.
- Install the title again from your library or disc.
- Apply the current game update, launch once with no mods, and test a clean or earlier save.
Reinstalling replaces title files; it does not decide which local or cloud save you should keep, and it does not make an incompatible creation compatible. Do not restore a full mod list until the unmodded installation has launched successfully.

If a clean, unmodded installation still will not launch after reinstalling, check Xbox service status and the console’s system updates. Microsoft’s Series X service guidance includes checking for updates and then testing whether a disc or digital game launches after service work.
Escalate to Xbox or the publisher when
- Multiple unrelated games fail to launch, not just the modded title.
- The console shuts down, displays hardware errors, or loses storage repeatedly.
- The title fails from a clean installation with no creations and a known-good save.
- Xbox services or the publisher report an outage that prevents authentication.
Give support the title, edition, console storage location, game version, exact symptom, whether an unmodded launch works, and the steps already completed. This prevents support from sending you back through cache and reinstall instructions you have already tested.

Safe practices for returning to modded play
- Keep at least one unmodded or pre-mod manual save.
- Change one mod or one small group at a time, then launch and test.
- Read dependency and load-order requirements before enabling a creation.
- After a game update, wait for critical mods to be marked compatible.
- Do not remove a scripted or world-editing mod from an active save unless its creator documents a safe uninstall method.
- Use distinct save names so a failed experiment cannot overwrite your recovery point.
Bottom line
Start with the changed content, not the hardware: quit the game, power-cycle the Series X, disable every mod, clear only Reserved Space, and test an earlier or unmodded save. Protect cloud saves before deleting local data, reserve reinstalling for persistent failures, and use network troubleshooting only for Mods or Creations connection errors. A clean launch after these steps identifies the problem as mod or save state; a clean reinstall that still fails is the point to involve Xbox or the game publisher.
