“Stops working” can describe several different faults: no power or no POST, no picture before Windows, a black screen after the Windows logo, a driver or application crash, or a failure that appears only under load. Start by identifying that stage. A pre-Windows failure points first to the display path, card installation, power delivery, firmware and other hardware connections; a failure after Windows starts also includes drivers and startup software. A black screen alone does not prove that the RTX 5090 is defective.

If you are asking “Why does my RTX 5090 have no display?” or “Why does my RTX 5090 black screen?”, note exactly when the signal disappears. That single observation determines whether to begin with the monitor and POST path, Windows recovery and drivers, or power delivery during a workload.

Identify exactly when the RTX 5090 fails

Before changing hardware or firmware, write down what you observe during one failed start. The timing determines which checks are useful.

  • No power: the system does not start, or the card has no expected indicator or fan activity. Check the complete system power path before assuming the card is faulty.
  • No POST or firmware image: the computer powers on, but there is no picture before the operating system begins loading. The monitor may show “no signal,” or it may remain blank while the system appears to run.
  • Black screen after the Windows logo: firmware output appears, then the display disappears as Windows and its graphics driver load.
  • Crash in Windows or an application: the desktop appears, but a game or other program closes, freezes, resets the display driver or reboots the PC.
  • Intermittent failure under load: the card works at idle or on the desktop but loses video or crashes during demanding work. Record the application, workload, elapsed time and whether a reboot restores video.

Also record whether the PC remains powered, whether fans and motherboard indicators behave normally, whether another monitor changes the result, and whether the fault is repeatable. These observations route the diagnosis; they do not by themselves establish a failed GPU.

Separate a one-time startup incident from a repeatable failure. Test one variable at a time and note the original configuration before moving a cable, changing a firmware setting or installing a driver. Otherwise, a later improvement cannot tell you which change mattered.

If there is no image before Windows

Use the simplest display checks first. NVIDIA’s general black-screen guidance applies to GeForce systems, not specifically to every RTX 5090 board.

  1. Turn the monitor on and select the input connected to the PC. Confirm its power light or on-screen menu works independently of the computer.
  2. Power down and reconnect the video cable at both the graphics-card port and the monitor. A connector that looks inserted can still be loose.
  3. Disconnect additional displays and test with one monitor only. Multi-monitor negotiation can obscure which connection is failing.
  4. Try another output on the card, a different known-good cable, or another display. NVIDIA specifically suggests trying an HDMI connection or a different display when available.
  5. Observe whether the motherboard logo or firmware setup screen appears. If POST is visible but Windows later loses the signal, move to the Windows-startup section rather than repeatedly reseating hardware.

A “no signal” message identifies what the monitor is receiving, not which component is at fault. The same message can result from a monitor input selection, cable, card port, slot, power connection or firmware state. Keep the test simple: one display, one cable and one known-good input at a time.

When to consider Compatibility Support Module

If POST is visible, NVIDIA’s general guidance includes temporarily disabling Compatibility Support Module (CSM) in the motherboard firmware as a troubleshooting step. CSM settings and menu names differ by motherboard. Change only the setting described in your motherboard documentation, note its original value, and restore it if it does not help. Do not change firmware settings blindly or interrupt a firmware update.

Verify RTX 5090 power requirements without guessing

Power requirements depend on the exact board and the rest of the system. NVIDIA’s reference-design product page lists 575 W total graphics power and 1,000 W required system power, while also stating that “Graphics card specifications vary by add-in-card manufacturer.” The same page presents an 850 W minimum in a Founders Edition preparation example and warns that a higher rating may be needed depending on system configuration. Those figures are not interchangeable universal instructions.

Source or situation Published figure or connection guidance How to use it
NVIDIA reference-design product specification 575 W total graphics power Describes the reference design; partner-card requirements can differ.
NVIDIA reference-design product specification 1,000 W required system power Use as the page’s stated system requirement, then check the exact card and complete system.
Founders Edition preparation example on the same page 850 W minimum, with a warning that more may be needed An example for that preparation context, not a blanket recommendation for every RTX 5090 build.
RTX 5090 user guide 1,000 W minimum power rating Follow the guide supplied for the card, while checking the board partner’s documentation.
RTX 5090 user guide connection options At least four PCIe 8-pin cables used with the adapter, or one 600 W-or-greater PCIe Gen 5 16-pin cable Use only a connection arrangement approved for the exact card and power supply.

The differing wording between NVIDIA’s product page and user guide is why the exact shipped-card documentation should govern. Check the card maker’s power requirement, the power-supply maker’s instructions and the complete system’s CPU, drives, cooling and other loads. Do not size a PSU from the 575 W graphics figure alone, and do not treat the 850 W example as universal.

A PSU can have enough nameplate wattage yet still be unsuitable if its connectors, cable arrangement or manufacturer instructions do not match the card. Conversely, a sudden black screen is not proof that the PSU is inadequate. Confirm the model, rating and approved connection arrangement before buying anything.

Safe physical and cable checks

  1. Shut the computer down, switch the PSU off and disconnect AC power. Follow the case, card and PSU manuals before touching the card.
  2. Confirm the card is fully seated in the motherboard’s primary PCI Express x16 slot. NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 user guide identifies that slot as the one closest to the CPU.
  3. Verify that the card’s power plug or adapter is completely engaged. Do not force a connector, sharply bend it at the plug, or route the side panel against it.
  4. Use the cable arrangement specified for the card. Never mix modular cables from different PSU models, even when the plugs fit.
  5. Inspect the cable, adapter and sockets for scorching, cracking, looseness or other damage. Stop using a damaged part and contact its manufacturer or a qualified repair service.
  6. Check clearance. NVIDIA’s reference specification lists a 304 mm length, 137 mm width and a two-slot listing, while its preparation guidance discusses three-slot clearance and additional space for the power cable. Partner cards can be larger, so measure the particular card and case rather than relying on the reference dimensions.

Do not use a replacement cable merely because its plug fits. Modular PSU pinouts are not interchangeable between models. A replacement adapter or cable should be approved by the exact card and PSU manufacturers. If the connector shows heat damage or will not seat normally, stop testing and seek manufacturer or qualified repair assistance.

If reseating or reconnecting changes the symptom, record exactly what changed. That is useful evidence, but it still does not identify whether the original problem was the card, cable, slot or PSU.

If Windows starts and then the screen goes black

A visible firmware or Windows logo followed by a blank screen moves the first suspicion toward the Windows display path, startup software or the driver state, although hardware and power problems remain possible.

Use Windows recovery and Safe Mode

NVIDIA’s general support guidance recommends trying Windows Safe Mode and, where appropriate, Windows repair options. Safe Mode loads a minimal environment, which can show whether normal startup software or the graphics driver is involved. If Safe Mode works, note that result before changing anything; it narrows the branch but does not prove the driver is the only cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same guidance describes a clean boot to isolate non-Microsoft startup programs and services. Re-enable items methodically after testing so that you know which change affects the symptom. If Windows cannot reach recovery reliably, use the recovery method documented for your Windows installation rather than repeatedly hard-powering the machine.

If the display is usable in firmware but disappears exactly when Windows takes over, do not begin by changing the PCIe slot or buying a new GPU. First preserve the symptom, try Safe Mode or recovery, and document whether the failure follows a driver or operating-system change.

Check the official driver channel

Use NVIDIA’s official driver selector for the correct RTX 5090 product and your operating system. Read the current release notes before installing, rolling back or otherwise changing a driver. The available guidance does not establish one specific driver version, a universal clean-install procedure or a guaranteed driver fix for every RTX 5090 black screen, so do not present any of those as certain cures.

When the desktop works but applications crash or the card fails under load

There is no published RTX 5090-specific universal flow in the available NVIDIA material for application crashes or intermittent load failures. Treat these symptoms as an evidence-gathering problem rather than proof of a defective card.

Separate a workload trigger from a startup failure

  • Write down the application, version, workload, display count and approximate time until failure.
  • Note whether the display recovers by itself, whether Windows reports a driver reset, or whether the whole PC reboots or powers off.
  • Repeat with one monitor and the simplest known-good display connection. A change in result points to the display path, but does not identify a single failed component.
  • Check that the card remains firmly seated and that its approved power connection is still fully engaged after the system is cold.
  • Compare behavior before and after any driver or Windows change, recording versions and dates instead of relying on memory.

An application-only crash with a usable desktop is a different branch from a system power-off or a signal loss that affects every program. Do not buy a replacement card solely because one game or benchmark crashes. If the failure is repeatable only under load, include the workload and elapsed time in your support report; that pattern is more useful than a general statement that the card “stopped working.”

How to distinguish the GPU, PSU, display path and driver

The following matrix organizes checks by timing and path. It is a diagnostic framework, not a ranking of which cause is most common.

Observed behavior First path to check Useful next evidence
No signal before any firmware image Monitor, cable, selected input, single-display test, card seating and approved power connection Whether another display or port produces POST; motherboard status indicators
POST appears, then Windows goes black Windows Safe Mode, recovery options, startup software and current driver channel Whether Safe Mode remains visible and whether the problem began after a driver or OS change
Desktop is stable but one application crashes Application and driver state, then workload-specific power and connection checks Application name/version, driver version, repeatability and any error code
Signal loss or shutdown only under load Exact PSU capacity, approved cable arrangement, connector condition, card seating and case clearance Workload and elapsed time, whether a cold restart restores operation, and whether one-monitor testing changes it
Changing cable, monitor or port changes the result Display path Which exact cable, port and display worked; test the original combination again only after documenting it
Correct display path and power checks fail at every stage Escalation to the card maker, seller or NVIDIA support Complete hardware, firmware, OS, driver and symptom record

A result that implicates one path is a reason to test that path further, not permission to declare another component dead. For example, a black screen that disappears with a different cable supports a cable or port investigation; it does not establish a GPU defect.

What to collect before contacting support

Support can act faster when the failure is described precisely. Keep the original configuration available and do not discard a cable or adapter until the diagnosis is complete.

  • Exact RTX 5090 board-partner model and, if available, its serial number
  • PSU manufacturer and model, rated capacity, age and the exact cable or adapter arrangement
  • Motherboard model, BIOS or UEFI version and the PCI Express slot used
  • Operating-system edition and build, NVIDIA driver version and the date the symptom began
  • Monitor model, cable type, card port, selected input and whether one-monitor testing or another display changed the result
  • Failure stage: before POST, during Windows startup, at the desktop, in a named application or only under a repeatable load
  • Whether the PC stays powered, reboots, shuts down, shows a motherboard diagnostic code or recovers after a restart
  • Any visible error message, Windows event, installer message or support reference number

Use NVIDIA’s GeForce support portal for current drivers, technical-support knowledgebase articles, forums and support options. For a board-specific warranty or repair, contact the card’s manufacturer or the seller under the product’s applicable terms. A replacement card, PSU or cable is justified only after the evidence points to that part and the replacement is compatible with the exact system.

When opening a support case, describe the shortest reproducible sequence: for example, “POST appears, Windows logo appears, screen goes black, Safe Mode remains visible.” Include every cable, monitor, port and driver version tested. That lets support distinguish a pre-OS signal problem from a Windows startup problem without asking you to repeat unrelated steps.

A concise decision path

  1. Classify the failure as no power, pre-POST, after the Windows logo, application-only or load-dependent.
  2. For pre-POST symptoms, test monitor power, one display, secure cables, another port or display, and then the card’s seating and approved power connection.
  3. For Windows-startup symptoms, test Safe Mode or recovery, isolate startup software with a clean boot when appropriate, and use the official driver selector and release notes.
  4. For load or application symptoms, record the workload and versions, repeat with one display, and verify the exact PSU and cable requirements without assuming a universal wattage.
  5. If the symptom survives these checks, escalate with the complete record rather than repeatedly changing several variables at once.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my RTX 5090 have no display?

First determine whether the blank screen occurs before POST or only after Windows starts. Check monitor power and input, secure the cable at both ends, test one display, and try another port, HDMI connection or display. Then verify the card is seated in the primary PCI Express x16 slot and has the approved power connection. A no-signal message alone does not prove the GPU is defective.

Is a 1,000 W power supply mandatory for every RTX 5090?

NVIDIA’s reference product page lists 1,000 W required system power, while its Founders Edition preparation example presents an 850 W minimum and warns that more may be needed. The RTX 5090 user guide lists a 1,000 W minimum. Because board-partner specifications and complete system loads vary, follow the exact card and PSU documentation rather than treating one figure as universal.

What power cables can an RTX 5090 use?

The user guide describes either at least four PCIe 8-pin cables used with the supplied adapter or one 600 W-or-greater PCIe Gen 5 16-pin cable. Use only the arrangement approved for your exact card and PSU. Never mix modular cables between PSU models, and replace damaged cables or adapters only with manufacturer-approved parts.

Which PCIe slot should hold the RTX 5090?

NVIDIA’s user guide specifies the primary PCI Express x16 slot, normally the slot closest to the CPU. Shut the system down and follow the motherboard and card instructions when reseating it.

Should I disable CSM to fix a black screen?

NVIDIA’s general guidance includes temporarily disabling Compatibility Support Module when POST is visible. It is not a universal RTX 5090 fix. Check your motherboard documentation, record the original setting, change only the relevant option, and restore it if it does not help.

When should I replace the graphics card or PSU?

Do not buy a replacement based only on a black screen or one application crash. First document the failure stage and test the display path, approved power arrangement, seating, Windows recovery and driver state. Replace or return a part only when repeatable evidence and the manufacturer or seller support process point to that exact component.

What information will NVIDIA or the card maker need?

Provide the exact board-partner model, PSU model and cable arrangement, motherboard and BIOS version, operating system, driver version, monitor and cable details, the precise failure stage, tests already performed, error codes and whether the PC stays powered, reboots or recovers after restart.

The Bottom Line

Troubleshoot an RTX 5090 by failure stage, not by assuming the card is dead. For no image before Windows, start with monitor input, one known-good cable and display, then verify the card’s primary-slot seating and manufacturer-approved power connection. For a black screen after the Windows logo, use Safe Mode, recovery options, startup isolation and NVIDIA’s current driver channel. For crashes under load, document the workload and verify the exact PSU and cable requirements. If those checks do not resolve a repeatable fault, escalate with the complete configuration and symptom record to the board partner, seller or NVIDIA support.
