First determine whether the failure is limited to the Echo or affects your whole network. Connect a phone, tablet, or computer to the same Wi‑Fi: if that device also fails, restart the router and investigate the internet connection; if other devices work, focus on the Echo’s saved network, location, band, and setup state. Work through the checks below in order, and use a factory reset only after the lower-risk steps fail.

Start by separating an Echo problem from a network problem

The quickest diagnostic is another device already associated with the same wireless network. Do not use cellular data for this check; the test needs to use the exact Wi‑Fi network that the Echo is supposed to use.

What you observe What it suggests First action
The phone, tablet, or computer also cannot connect The router or internet service may be the common failure point Restart the router, then test several devices again
Other devices connect normally, but the Echo does not The Echo’s saved settings, signal conditions, or setup state are more likely Check password, placement, interference, and Wi‑Fi band
Several devices remain offline after the router restart An internet-service or broader home-network problem is possible Contact your internet service provider (ISP)
The Echo fails only during first-time setup The setup process or the router’s compatibility with the setup connection may be involved Update the Alexa app, restart the Echo, and use the setup fallback below

Amazon’s general troubleshooting guidance recommends restarting the router when another device also fails. In that situation, unplug the Echo for 30 seconds, plug it back in, and wait for it to finish starting before testing again. If multiple household devices still cannot reach the internet, Amazon’s setup guidance directs you to the ISP rather than treating the Echo as the sole cause. Amazon’s “Echo Device Is Having Wi‑Fi Issues” instructions and its setup troubleshooting page cover these branches.

1. Restart the router and Echo before changing anything

Restart the router

  1. Unplug the router’s power cable.
  2. Wait for it to shut down completely, then reconnect power.
  3. Allow the router to finish starting and broadcast Wi‑Fi.
  4. Test a phone or computer, then test the Echo.

This is a restart, not a reset. It does not erase your router configuration. If other devices still fail after the router comes back online, stop treating the Echo as an isolated problem and contact the ISP.

  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

Power-cycle the Echo

  1. Unplug the Echo for 30 seconds.
  2. Plug it back in and wait for startup to complete.
  3. Retry the voice command or setup connection.

A power-cycle is also different from a factory reset: it does not remove the Echo from your account or erase its saved configuration.

2. Move the Echo close to the router and remove interference

For diagnosis, place the Echo in the same room as the wireless router, then test it before returning it to its normal location. Amazon says to keep an Echo within 30 feet (10 meters) of the wireless router. That figure is a placement recommendation, not a guaranteed operating distance or a laboratory performance result. Amazon Customer Service states the 30-foot (10-meter) recommendation here.

Also move the Echo away from potential sources of radio interference. Amazon specifically names microwaves, baby monitors, and other electronics. A useful diagnostic sequence is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Place the Echo in open space rather than inside a cabinet or directly behind large equipment.
  • Keep it away from a microwave and from a baby monitor while testing.
  • Temporarily move it near the router and retry the connection.
  • If it works nearby but fails in its original room, distance or interference is implicated; improve the placement or test a different Wi‑Fi band.

3. Recheck the Wi‑Fi password and network load

Confirm the password

A changed Wi‑Fi password leaves the Echo trying to use an old saved credential. Re-enter the current password through the Alexa app or the screen-based Wi‑Fi controls described later. Check the characters carefully, including capitalization and symbols, rather than assuming a network-name change is the only difference.

Temporarily reduce competing connections

If phones and computers connect but the Echo repeatedly fails, temporarily turn off some connected devices and try again. Amazon includes this as a check for congestion. Treat the result as a diagnostic: if the Echo connects only after other devices disconnect, the router may be struggling with its current load or configuration. The support guidance does not establish a universal device limit, so do not infer one from a single successful test.

Restore the devices you disconnected after the test. A temporary improvement does not prove that the Echo needs a new router, and Amazon does not prescribe buying replacement hardware as a routine fix. Router replacement is only a separate consideration if other evidence shows that the home network itself is unreliable.

4. Test the router’s 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks

Many routers show two separate network names (SSIDs), one for 2.4 GHz and one for 5 GHz. If yours does, try the other network instead of assuming one band is always superior. Amazon’s Wi‑Fi guidance says Echo devices support common 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz home Wi‑Fi using the 802.11a/b/g/n standards. The recommended action is to test the alternative band in your particular room and router setup, not to apply a blanket preference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Look at the available Wi‑Fi names on your phone. Identify whether the router exposes distinct 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz SSIDs.
  2. Move the Echo to the other SSID using the Alexa app (for an Echo without a screen) or the device’s own Wi‑Fi controls (for a screen-equipped Echo).
  3. Test the connection in the Echo’s normal location, then near the router if necessary.

An Echo cannot connect to an ad-hoc or peer-to-peer network. If the network is a direct device-to-device arrangement rather than a conventional home Wi‑Fi network, use a standard router network instead. Amazon states this limitation in its Wi‑Fi settings guidance.

Do not change several router settings at once. Switching bands while also renaming the network or changing the password makes it difficult to tell which change mattered. Make one controlled change, reconnect the Echo, and then test it in the location where you normally use it.

5. Refresh the Echo’s saved Wi‑Fi settings

Echo devices without a screen

Use the Alexa mobile app and follow Amazon’s current labels:

  1. Open Alexa.
  2. Select Devices.
  3. Choose the affected Echo.
  4. Open Device Settings.
  5. Select Change or remove a Wi‑Fi network.
  6. Follow the prompts to select the correct network and enter its current password.
  7. If the desired network is not shown, select Join another Wi‑Fi Network.

The app path is for Echo devices without a screen. Amazon directs owners of screen-equipped devices to use the instructions on the device itself; the exact menu wording can vary by model. Refer to Amazon’s “Update the Wi‑Fi Settings for Your Echo Device” page if a label differs in your app version.

When the network does not appear

  • Bring the Echo within the 30-foot (10-meter) diagnostic range of the router.
  • Confirm that the router is broadcasting the intended SSID and that another device can see it.
  • Try the other visible band if the router has separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz names.
  • Use Join another Wi‑Fi Network rather than repeatedly selecting an obsolete saved entry.

If the password was changed recently, updating the saved network is more appropriate than immediately resetting the entire Echo. A factory reset removes more than the Wi‑Fi credential and creates additional setup work.

6. If the Echo will not connect during first-time setup

Setup failures deserve a slightly different path because the Echo may not yet have a usable saved network. Begin with the app and power checks, then use a phone hotspot as a controlled test.

  1. Update the Alexa app to the current version available for your phone.
  2. Restart the Echo by unplugging it for 30 seconds and reconnecting it.
  3. Repeat the distance, interference, password, and band checks above.
  4. If setup still fails, attempt setup while the phone provides a Wi‑Fi hotspot, following the on-screen setup prompts.
  5. After the test, return to the normal home network and configure the Echo with that network’s current credentials.

A hotspot test can help distinguish a home-router problem from an Echo or setup problem: if setup succeeds on the hotspot but not on the home network, the home network deserves further investigation. That interpretation is a diagnostic inference from Amazon’s suggested test, not a guarantee that the Echo is defective or that the router is the only cause. If several household devices are affected, contact the ISP. See Amazon’s “Echo Device Can’t Connect to Wi‑Fi During Setup” guidance.

The hotspot is a temporary diagnostic route, not a replacement for configuring the Echo on your normal home network. Keep the phone close enough for the setup prompts, use the hotspot name and password exactly as displayed, and switch the Echo back to the household SSID afterward. If the hotspot also fails, repeat the app update and restart checks before assuming the router is at fault.

7. Know when to restart, update settings, or factory-reset

Use the least destructive action that addresses the symptom:

Action Use it when What it changes
Power-cycle The Echo or router may be temporarily stuck Restarts the hardware without intentionally erasing account or smart-home data
Update Wi‑Fi settings The password, SSID, or selected band changed Replaces the Echo’s saved network information
Factory reset Amazon’s model-specific troubleshooting requires a clean setup after other steps fail Can erase personal information and device or smart-home connections; setup must be completed again

Reset controls differ by generation and by whether the Echo has a screen. Do not apply a button combination from a different model. Amazon’s official reset pages provide the exact procedure:

Device situation Official instructions
Echo (3rd or 4th Generation) and related reset choices Amazon reset instructions
1st-generation Echo, including its reset-button procedure Amazon reset instructions
Echo devices with screens and model-specific menus Amazon reset instructions

For some Echo (3rd or 4th Generation) devices, Amazon distinguishes a reset that keeps smart-home connections from a factory reset that erases personal information and device and smart-home connections. The available choice and wording depend on the model. Read the exact page for your device before confirming any reset, and record the Wi‑Fi password and smart-home details you will need during setup again.

  • Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
  • Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
  • Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.

  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

A reset is not a faster version of a restart. It is appropriate only when the model-specific instructions call for it or when earlier steps have failed and you are prepared to set the device up again. If the Echo is still linked to routines or smart-home equipment, note those relationships before selecting a factory-reset option.

8. Verify the fix without creating a new problem

After the Echo reconnects, test the connection in the place where you actually use it rather than stopping after a successful test beside the router.

  • Ask for a simple response, such as the time or a weather update.
  • Move the Echo back to its normal location and repeat the request.
  • If you changed bands, confirm that the Echo remains on the intended SSID in its Wi‑Fi settings.
  • Reconnect any devices you temporarily disconnected to test congestion.
  • If you performed a factory reset, complete account, Wi‑Fi, and smart-home setup again and verify that the connections you need are present.

If the Echo works near the router but not in its usual room, treat placement, interference, or the selected band as the unresolved issue. If the Echo fails everywhere while other devices work, repeat the saved-network update and consult the model-specific Amazon help pages before considering another reset. Amazon’s broader Echo support directory links to additional device-specific help.

Use this decision path when the symptom returns

Only the Echo is offline

Start with the current password and saved-network update, then test the Echo near the router, away from interference, and on the other available band. This branch keeps the troubleshooting focused on the Echo’s stored settings and radio conditions rather than changing a working home network.

Several devices are offline

Restart the router and retest. If multiple devices remain unable to connect, contact the ISP. Resetting the Echo cannot repair an internet-service outage affecting the rest of the home.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The problem occurs only during initial setup

Update the Alexa app, restart the Echo, repeat the basic checks, and use the phone-hotspot fallback. A successful hotspot setup narrows the investigation toward the home network, while failure on both networks warrants model-specific Amazon support and careful reset instructions.

The Echo has a screen

Do not force the no-screen Alexa-app path. Use the screen device’s own Wi‑Fi and reset instructions, because Amazon provides separate routes and model-dependent menu wording.

Common pitfalls that waste time

  • Testing the wrong network: A phone on cellular data or a neighboring SSID cannot show whether the Echo’s intended network is working.
  • Assuming distance is the only explanation: The 30-foot (10-meter) guidance is a practical check, not a promise that every Echo will work at exactly that distance.
  • Changing too many variables: Record whether you changed the password, SSID, band, or device location so you know which action helped.
  • Using instructions for another model: Reset buttons and menu choices vary by generation and by screen-equipped versus screen-free devices.
  • Leaving test conditions in place: Reconnect temporarily disconnected devices and return the Echo to its normal location to confirm the fix under everyday conditions.
  • Buying hardware too soon: These checks are free. Consider router replacement only if the broader network remains unreliable, not simply because one Echo failed to connect.

When to stop troubleshooting locally

Contact the ISP when several devices remain offline after a router restart or when the home connection is unstable beyond the Echo. Consult Amazon’s model-specific support when the Echo alone still cannot connect after its saved Wi‑Fi settings have been refreshed, the device has been tested near the router and on the available bands, and the correct reset procedure has been followed. Keep the model and generation handy: reset behavior and menu options are not interchangeable across Echo devices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won’t my Echo connect when my phone does?

Your phone working means the network is available, but the Echo may have an old password, be too far from the router, encounter interference, or be using a problematic band. Refresh the Echo’s saved Wi‑Fi settings, test it within 30 feet (10 meters) of the router, and try the other 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz SSID if one is available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I use 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz for an Echo?

Amazon supports common 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz home Wi‑Fi using 802.11a/b/g/n. It does not prescribe one band as universally better. If your router has separate network names, test the other band in the Echo’s normal location and keep the one that provides a stable connection.

How do I change Wi‑Fi on an Echo without a screen?

In the Alexa app, choose Devices, select the Echo, open Device Settings, and select Change or remove a Wi‑Fi network. Follow the prompts, or choose Join another Wi‑Fi Network when the intended SSID is not listed. Screen-equipped Echo models use their own on-device instructions instead.

Will unplugging my Echo erase its settings?

No. Unplugging it for 30 seconds is a power-cycle, not a factory reset. It restarts the device without intentionally erasing account or smart-home information. A factory reset is a separate, model-specific action that can remove personal information and device or smart-home connections.

What does a phone-hotspot test prove?

It is a diagnostic comparison. If setup succeeds through the phone hotspot but fails on the home network, the home router or its configuration deserves further investigation. This result does not by itself prove that the Echo is defective or that the router is the only possible cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I contact my internet provider?

Contact the ISP when several phones, computers, or other household devices remain unable to connect after the router is restarted, or when the home internet connection is broadly unstable. An Echo factory reset cannot repair an outage affecting multiple devices.

The Bottom Line

Test another device first, then restart the router and Echo, check the 30-foot (10-meter) placement recommendation, remove interference, verify the password, and try the other available Wi‑Fi band. Refresh saved settings in Alexa for screen-free models, use the device’s own controls for screen models, and reserve a model-specific factory reset for cases that survive the lower-risk checks.
