When an AI agent cannot see a desktop window or interact with it, isolate the failure in this order: confirm that computer-use is enabled for the task, grant the required permissions to the process that actually captures and controls the desktop, verify that the host and target window are in the correct awake session, then check operating-system and application support. These layers are independent: an agent can have macOS Accessibility permission and still lack Screen Recording, or have both permissions while targeting a sleeping host or unsupported application.
Use the agent’s own setup documentation for exact names and helper processes. The same symptom does not imply the same fix across products.
Start with the failure layer, not a random permission change
Desktop agents usually perform two different jobs. They need a visual channel to capture a screen or window, and an input channel to send clicks, keystrokes or other control events. A third layer determines whether the feature is exposed to the task at all. A fourth determines whether the machine, session and application are compatible.
Work through the following sequence and test after each change. If a step resolves the problem, stop there; changing unrelated permissions can make later diagnosis harder.

- Confirm computer use is enabled and available to the task or access profile.
- Identify the product’s actual agent, worker or helper process.
- Grant the relevant operating-system permissions to that process.
- Refresh the permission state in the product and restart its worker when documented.
- Confirm the host is awake and connected, and that the target window is in the controlled session.
- Check operating-system, display-mode and application compatibility.
- Use an API, terminal, filesystem, MCP or dedicated browser tool instead when pixels are unnecessary.
1. Confirm that computer use is enabled
An agent may be installed correctly but never receive a desktop-control tool. A task policy, administrator profile or product setting can hide computer use even when the operating system would permit screen capture and input.
Check the feature and task profile
- Open the agent’s settings or task/tool profile and look for a setting named Computer Use, desktop control or a similarly specific capability.
- Verify that the current workspace, organization policy and task access profile allow the feature. A different profile may expose chat, files or a terminal while withholding desktop control.
- Check whether the product requires an explicit enablement step before a task can call the tool. GitHub’s setup instructions require computer use to be enabled, and its concept documentation describes the capability as separately exposed and policy-controlled. If the agent reports that no computer-use tool exists, never attempts a desktop action, or offers only text instructions, treat this as an availability or policy problem first. Operating-system permissions cannot enable a tool that the task was not allowed to use.
2. Identify the process that really controls the desktop
Permissions apply to an application or helper, not to an abstract AI account. Many products have a launcher, a background worker and a capture or control helper. The process visible in the product’s instructions may not be the terminal, browser tab or desktop shortcut from which you started it.

Find the documented helper
- Read the product’s computer-use or self-hosted setup page and note the exact application, worker or helper name it asks you to authorize.
- If the product displays a permission prompt, record which app appears in the prompt. That identity is more useful than assuming the foreground launcher is responsible.
- For a remote setup, distinguish the local viewer from the host-side agent. Granting local permissions will not fix a host worker that performs the capture and input.
Cursor’s self-hosted documentation specifically ties macOS permissions to its worker/helper arrangement and recommends restarting the worker after a grant. Its instructions are at Cursor’s computer-use and desktop-sharing guide.
3. On macOS, separate viewing permission from control permission
macOS commonly separates visual inspection from interaction. In the product documentation cited here, Screen Recording lets the agent see application windows, while Accessibility lets it interact with controls. An agent can therefore report that it cannot capture a screenshot even though it can send an input event, or it can recognize a window but fail to click or type.
Grant Screen Recording for visual access
- Open System Settings.
- Choose Privacy & Security, then Screen Recording.
- Enable the toggle for the agent, worker or helper identified by the product.
- Authenticate with an administrator password or biometric confirmation if macOS requests it.
Use this permission when the symptom is a blank, missing or unreadable screenshot, or when the agent cannot determine what is on the screen. Grant Accessibility for input control
- Remain in System Settings > Privacy & Security.
- Open Accessibility.
- Enable the same agent, worker or helper that performs desktop control.
- Authenticate if prompted, then retry a harmless action such as focusing a window or typing into a test field.
Accessibility is the relevant check when the agent can see a window but cannot click, type, press a shortcut or manipulate a control. GitHub’s macOS instructions distinguish this interaction permission from Screen Recording in its setup documentation.

Granting permission to Terminal, a shell, a launcher or a browser does not automatically grant it to a separate worker. The controlling process may be launched by that application but still appear as its own helper. If the product names a helper, authorize that helper. If it does not, use the product’s support instructions rather than adding broad permissions to multiple unrelated applications.
4. Refresh permissions after granting them
Permission databases and long-running workers do not always update at the instant you flip a toggle. Refresh the product’s status before concluding that the grant failed.
- Return to the agent’s setup or diagnostics screen and use its permission check. GitHub documents a Check again action after macOS permissions change.
- If the product runs a persistent worker, stop and restart that worker after granting permissions. Cursor’s self-hosted troubleshooting specifically calls for a worker restart.
- Quit and reopen the desktop agent if its documentation requires a full relaunch.
- Retest with a visible, non-sensitive window and a simple action, then inspect the exact error rather than relying on the previous failure message.
If the permission appears enabled but the product still reports it missing, verify that the toggle belongs to the helper doing the work and that you changed permissions on the machine where that helper runs. A local viewer and a remote worker can have different permission states.
5. Verify the desktop session and target window
Correct permissions do not make an unavailable window visible. The host must be awake and connected, and the target application must be open in the session controlled by the agent.
Check host availability
- Wake the computer and unlock it if the product requires an active user session.
- Confirm that the remote connection or worker is online and attached to the intended host, not another machine or user session.
- Check network and remote-session status before changing application permissions.
Jump Desktop documents that a sleeping host cannot accept its agent connection. This is a product-specific requirement, but it illustrates why a disconnected or sleeping machine can look like a permissions failure.

Check the window the agent is meant to use
- Open the target application in the controlled desktop session.
- Keep the relevant window visible if the product requires a visible window for capture or interaction.
- Restore a minimized window and bring it to the expected desktop or workspace.
- Do not assume a window open in another user account, virtual desktop, remote login or disconnected session is available to the agent.
Some implementations work only with visible, non-minimized windows. A background, minimized or different-session window can therefore produce the same symptom as missing Screen Recording.
6. Check operating-system and display-mode support
Computer-use implementations do not share one universal platform matrix. One product may require a full graphical desktop, another may support a virtual display, and another may exclude Linux or headless workers entirely.
Linux and headless workers
The cited CoWork guidance says its tools are unavailable on Linux or headless builds, while Cursor documents separate Linux display checks for its self-hosted worker. The practical conclusion is not that Linux always works or always fails: confirm the exact product’s supported operating systems, display server and worker configuration. If a worker has no usable display, a screenshot tool cannot be repaired with macOS permissions.

Microsoft’s computer-use documentation describes a configured Windows computer and notes that some application types and virtualized environments may not be supported. Review the requirements at Microsoft’s computer-use documentation before treating a particular Windows application as defective.
Virtual, remote and elevated environments
Virtual machines, remote sessions and secure desktops can impose separate capture or input restrictions. An application running with elevated privileges may reject input from an agent running at a lower privilege level, depending on the implementation. Protected surfaces can also block screenshots or automation. Do not elevate an agent broadly as a first fix; first establish whether the product documents a comparable-privilege requirement and apply the least privilege that solves the task.
7. Check application compatibility when only one app fails
If the agent can operate a simple test window but fails in one application, the problem is likely application-specific rather than a general desktop permission.

Inspect the failing application
- Is it minimized, hidden, on another virtual desktop or running in a different session?
- Is it a protected, secure, elevated or virtualized application?
- Does it use custom-drawn controls, canvas content or dynamic elements that do not expose standard accessibility information?
- Does the product list this application type as supported?
GitHub notes that non-standard and dynamic interfaces can limit computer-use reliability in its capability documentation. Microsoft likewise lists application categories and virtualized environments that may not be supported. A window can be visible yet still offer too little structured information for an agent to identify a button or field reliably.

- Test the same agent on a basic, non-elevated application with a clearly visible text field.
- Test the failing application while it is restored, focused and in the same session.
- Compare whether the agent can capture both screens and whether only input fails.
- Consult the product’s compatibility list before changing privilege or security settings.
When only the protected application fails, preserve its security boundary unless the vendor explicitly documents a safe configuration. A successful click in a test window does not prove that every application is automatable.

Use a direct tool when desktop pixels are unnecessary
Desktop automation is often the least structured way to perform a task. If the objective can be completed through a supported interface, use that interface instead of continuing to debug clicks and screenshots.
- API: Prefer an application API for records, settings or transactions that it exposes programmatically.
- MCP server: Use a supported MCP integration when it provides typed operations for the service.
- Terminal or CLI: Choose a command-line tool for repeatable local administration and scripts.
- Filesystem tool: Read or modify files directly when no visual application state is required.
- Dedicated browser tool: Use a browser-specific tool for web tasks instead of controlling a full desktop.
GitHub’s computer-use guidance says these structured tools typically provide more predictable results when they can complete the job. They also reduce dependence on window focus, screen resolution, visual interpretation and application-specific control behavior.
How to evaluate an agent or desktop setup
If you are selecting a setup rather than repairing one, compare the constraints that determine whether desktop control will be dependable.

These are vendor-documented differences, not a universal ranking of desktop agents. A setup that is excellent for an awake, visible Windows session may be unsuitable for a headless Linux worker or a protected application.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop changing permissions when the evidence points to an unsupported configuration or application. Document the exact symptom, operating system, session type, target application, helper identity and product version, then use the vendor’s support path. If a direct interface can complete the task, switch to it rather than weakening security controls or granting an agent broader access than necessary.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will granting Terminal or my launcher macOS permissions fix the agent?
Not necessarily. macOS permissions must be assigned to the process or helper that captures the screen and sends input. Follow the product’s documented helper identity; a terminal or launcher may only start that worker.

Visual capture and input control are separate capabilities. On macOS, Screen Recording supports viewing while Accessibility supports interaction. The target application may also be protected, elevated or incompatible with the agent’s controls.
Does a sleeping remote computer cause a permissions error?
It can look similar. A sleeping host may not accept an agent connection at all. Wake the host, verify its network connection and confirm that the worker is attached to the intended session before changing permissions.
Is a Linux headless worker always unsupported?
No. Support is product-specific. One cited product excludes Linux/headless builds, while another documents Linux display checks. Consult the exact agent’s platform and display requirements.
What is the safest alternative to desktop clicking?
