When AmneziaVPN will not connect, connects without carrying traffic, or becomes slow, start by separating an app or profile problem from a network restriction, device conflict, protocol issue, or self-hosted server failure. Record the exact symptom, update the app, reload the service configuration, test the same network without the VPN, and then work through the branch that matches your Free, Premium, or self-hosted setup. For speed complaints, compare like-for-like tests with and without the VPN rather than treating any single speed figure as a guarantee.
Start with a short, controlled diagnosis
Before changing protocols or reinstalling anything, write down the facts that determine which fix is safe. Note the device and operating system, AmneziaVPN version, service type (Free, Premium, or Self-hosted), selected location, selected protocol, exact error text, and whether ordinary internet access works with the VPN disabled. Record whether the problem affects every connection or only one, and whether it appears on one network (such as mobile data or home Wi-Fi) or on several. A tunnel that says “connected” but carries no traffic is a different failure from a profile that never connects.
- Test ordinary internet first. Turn AmneziaVPN off and open several sites or services. If the underlying connection is already failing, repair that network before troubleshooting the tunnel.
- Try one controlled retry. Reconnect once after noting the time and the error. Repeated rapid retries can make it harder to tell an intermittent network problem from a bad configuration.
- Use the same device and network for comparisons. Switching both at once hides the cause.
- Keep the original profile until a replacement works. Deleting a self-hosted protocol can remove users and invalidate their keys.
The official Amnezia troubleshooting pages are written for particular app versions and service types. Menu names can move, so treat the labels below as the documented path for the relevant platform and confirm the wording in your current build.
Match the symptom to the right branch

Refresh the app and service configuration
Update before changing a working profile
Install the latest AmneziaVPN version using the current official instructions for your platform. An outdated client can fail to retrieve a configuration or use settings that no longer match the service. After updating, restart the app and retry the same connection once. Do not treat an update as proof that a particular protocol or location is available everywhere; service availability and interface labels change.

Reload the API configuration
For Free and Premium connections, open the settings for the affected connection and use the documented option to reload the API configuration. This refreshes the service-side connection data without immediately discarding the profile. Reconnect after the reload and check whether traffic, not just the status indicator, works.
Recreate a Free connection when a reload fails
Amnezia’s Free guidance recommends deleting and recreating the connection through the documented “VPN by Amnezia” flow when refreshing the configuration does not help. Record any information you need first, then create the replacement and test it on the same network. This step applies to the Free flow; do not transfer it automatically to a self-hosted protocol, where removal has more serious consequences.
Try Premium locations and the documented alternate protocol
For Premium, test the other locations currently offered in the app. If none of the available locations connects, the official guide directs users to try the documented alternative protocol, such as VLESS, when it is offered for that account. A location or protocol change is a diagnostic comparison, not a guarantee that a restriction will be bypassed or that speed will improve.

A VPN profile can complete its handshake while traffic is blocked or misrouted. Work through these checks in order.
- Confirm the non-VPN connection. Disconnect AmneziaVPN and verify that the same Wi-Fi or mobile connection can reach ordinary websites. If it cannot, resolve the local outage first.
- Reload the relevant configuration. Use the Free or Premium API reload described above. For self-hosted users, continue to the server checks rather than deleting the profile.
- Check for a second VPN or security product. Another VPN, firewall, or traffic-filtering application can install a profile or route that prevents AmneziaVPN from carrying packets.
- Change only one variable. If another location or supported protocol is available, test it separately and record whether the tunnel and traffic both work.
- Compare networks. Test mobile data versus home Wi-Fi or a wired connection. A failure limited to one access network points toward its carrier, ISP, router, or filtering policy rather than the app alone.
If the tunnel works on one network but not another, keep the working result as a control. It helps support staff distinguish a service configuration problem from an access-network restriction.

Remove Android and desktop conflicts
Android VPN profile settings
Android allows another VPN application to enforce device-wide rules. In each other VPN app, inspect the system VPN settings and disable Always-on VPN and Block connections without VPN if they are forcing traffic through a different profile. Then try adding or reconnecting the AmneziaVPN profile. The exact path varies by Android release and manufacturer, so use the current system Settings search for “VPN” when the labels differ.
Battery and power-saving restrictions
Battery optimization can stop background activity and make a connection appear to drop, especially when the screen is off. Remove AmneziaVPN from aggressive battery or power-saving restrictions, allow its background operation, and test again while the device remains awake. Reapply the normal battery policy after testing if power use is a concern; the goal is to determine whether the operating system is terminating the tunnel.
KillSwitch on desktop platforms
On Windows, macOS, and Linux, a KillSwitch can intentionally block all traffic after the VPN tunnel drops. If the internet disappears immediately after a disconnect, inspect AmneziaVPN’s KillSwitch setting and disable it temporarily for diagnosis, or reconnect the VPN before changing other network settings. Amnezia states that its app has no built-in KillSwitch on Android or iOS, so do not look for that option on those platforms. A separate security application can still impose its own traffic block.
Separate local restrictions from VPN or server faults
Use the same network to test ordinary internet access and, where possible, compare a mobile connection with wired or home Wi-Fi. Amnezia’s self-hosted procedure begins by checking access to a foreign test server with nPerf. If that test is blocked or severely limited, the access network may be restricting international traffic; it is not evidence by itself that Amnezia’s server is defective.
Whitelist-only policies are regional and network-dependent. Amnezia’s documentation discusses this situation in Russia and notes that changing the internet source may help. Its Premium guidance describes a Greenland location for whitelist-restricted mobile internet, but availability and applicability can change; verify that the location is currently offered and relevant to your carrier. The self-hosted guide says there is no ready-made supported bypass for a whitelist-only restriction. Present any location change as a test, not a promise of restored access.

When a connection fails only on one ISP or carrier, capture the network name, approximate time, and whether another access method works. That evidence is more useful than repeatedly reinstalling the client.

Run a comparable test
Use nPerf (or the same speed-testing service) with the VPN disabled and enabled on the same device, network, and time window. Choose a test server in the region of the selected VPN location—for example, a Germany-based test server when the VPN endpoint is in Germany. Record download and upload results, latency if shown, the VPN location, protocol, and test time. A test to a distant server while the VPN is enabled is not a fair comparison with a nearby server while it is disabled.
Amnezia’s FAQ includes a “below 100 Mbps” troubleshooting heading. That wording is a prompt to investigate, not evidence that every user should receive 100 Mbps or that a lower result proves a fault. No independent performance benchmark in the official troubleshooting material establishes a universal speed threshold.
Check the main causes listed by Amnezia
- Shared bandwidth: another user of the VPN service may be consuming capacity at the time of the test.
- Baseline international speed: your connection may already be slow to foreign servers even with the VPN disabled.
- Routing: the path between your device, the VPN endpoint, and the destination can add congestion or distance.
- Protocol encryption: encryption and processing overhead can reduce throughput on a constrained device or link.
- Whitelist restrictions: filtering on the access network can severely limit or shape international traffic.
These are possible causes identified in vendor guidance, not a diagnosis of any particular connection. Change one factor at a time—location, protocol, or network—then repeat the same regional test so the result remains interpretable.
Measure a self-hosted server separately
A device-to-VPN comparison answers how the complete path feels to you. It does not show whether the VPS itself has adequate upstream capacity. Amnezia’s hosting guide separately describes installing Ookla’s Speedtest command-line utility on the server to measure server-side performance. Treat that result as a second measurement: a fast server test does not eliminate congestion between the server and your device, and a slow server test points toward hosting or server capacity.

Troubleshoot a self-hosted AmneziaWG installation
Self-hosted failures require server checks before protocol surgery. Reinstalling or migrating a protocol can remove every user attached to it.
Verify the server and account
- Confirm that the server is powered on, the hosting account is active, and required payments have not lapsed.
- From the affected network, test whether the server is reachable over SSH.
- In AmneziaVPN, open the management area for VPN users and check whether the app can reach the server there as well.
If both SSH and the app’s management section are unreachable, Amnezia says the server IP may have been blocked by the mobile carrier or ISP. Discuss an IP change with the hosting provider or try another provider. This is a server-reachability problem; changing a client toggle cannot repair a blocked address.
Inspect AmneziaWG only after reachability works
When SSH and app management work, inspect the AmneziaWG parameters using the current official instructions for your app version. Version-specific recommendations can change, so do not copy an old numeric setting from an earlier guide without checking it against the current release guidance.
Understand the cost of a reinstall
Amnezia warns that reinstalling the AmneziaWG protocol removes its users and stops their connections. Afterward you must recreate each user and distribute new connection keys or configuration files. Before migrating to another protocol or changing the router setup, verify that the router supports the target protocol. Preserve existing configuration information only if the current documentation says it remains valid; assume old keys will not work after users are removed.
Choose a protocol or location methodically
Amnezia documents AmneziaWG, XRay VLESS Reality, OpenVPN, and WireGuard. The available choices depend on the service, platform, and self-hosted installation. There is no official comparative test in the troubleshooting material that ranks these protocols by speed or reliability, so choose using observable behavior and compatibility rather than a blanket “fastest” claim.

Keep XRay VLESS Reality settings conservative
Amnezia’s protocol configuration guidance cautions against changing XRay settings beyond Server Name (SNI) and, if needed, the port. Other modifications can stop the connection. If you are testing this protocol, change only those documented fields and retain the original values so you can roll back.
Use error codes instead of generic fixes
When Amnezia displays an error code, match the exact code to the current official error-code guide. The documented categories include platform or protocol incompatibility, failure to retrieve API configuration, subscription configuration limits, and a missing installed protocol container. Each category can require a different action; applying a generic reinstall to all of them can destroy a working self-hosted setup.
Copy the complete code and surrounding message, along with your device, app version, service type, location, protocol, and network test results. Avoid paraphrasing an error that contains a platform or protocol name.

Collect logs that support can use
Amnezia’s logging guide treats logs primarily as support evidence and provides a capture workflow rather than a separate manual log-reading tutorial.
- Open the app’s logging controls and clear old logs so the export reflects the current incident.
- Enable log recording.
- Reproduce the failure once, noting the time and the action that triggered it.
- Stop recording and export the logs through the documented control.
- Send the export to Amnezia support through the current official contact channel, including the exact error, platform, app version, service type, location, protocol, and whether ordinary internet worked without the VPN.
Do not edit the file before sending it unless support instructs you to do so; removing context can make the event impossible to correlate. Review the export for personal information according to your own privacy requirements and follow the support team’s current submission instructions.
A prevention checklist for future failures
- Keep AmneziaVPN updated and note the version when a connection first fails.
- Maintain a simple record of which locations and protocols work on each important network.
- Do not enable Always-on VPN or “Block connections without VPN” in a second Android VPN app unless that behavior is intentional.
- Review Android battery restrictions after a major system update.
- Know whether a desktop KillSwitch is enabled before diagnosing an apparent total internet outage.
- For self-hosted servers, keep current user keys and document which router models support your chosen protocol.
- Before a self-hosted reinstall, warn users that the protocol’s users may be deleted and that new keys will be required.
- When measuring speed, save the test server, VPN location, protocol, download, upload, and time so later comparisons are meaningful.
The practical verdict is to escalate in layers: refresh the client and service configuration, eliminate device conflicts, compare networks, measure speed consistently, then inspect or rebuild a self-hosted server only when reachability tests justify it. This order preserves working profiles and produces the evidence needed for a precise support response.
