A Xiaomi, Mijia or Aqara door sensor that reports the wrong state usually has an alignment, power or hub-communication problem rather than an immediately failed sensor. First identify the exact model and hub, then test the magnet position, app events, radio link and model-specific battery. Reset or replace the device only after those checks.
1. Identify the exact sensor, app and hub
“Xiaomi door sensor” describes several products with different batteries, pairing procedures and hub requirements. Read the label on the sensor, open the device details in the app and note the hub or gateway it uses. Record the model before removing the battery or holding any button.
This matters because a specification for one Aqara model cannot safely be applied to every Xiaomi-branded or Mijia sensor. The Aqara Door and Window Sensor E1, for example, has a documented CR1632 battery and a maximum installation gap of less than 22 mm. Those details do not establish the battery or gap for an unidentified sensor.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Model | Documented communication and pairing detail | Installation or power detail | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aqara Door and Window Sensor E1 | Zigbee operation; the manual describes a range test and hub communication check | Align the sensor and magnet marker lines; keep the closed-door gap below 22 mm; uses a CR1632 battery | These dimensions and battery details are E1-specific |
| Aqara Door and Window Sensor T1 | Zigbee 3.0 contact detection; requires an Aqara hub | The manual describes a five-second button hold for reset/network connection | Do not treat the five-second hold as a universal Xiaomi reset method |
If the app lists a different model, follow that model’s manual for battery type, reset timing and hub compatibility. Do not begin by guessing which battery or reset sequence applies.

2. Determine whether the state is physically wrong or merely stale
Use a controlled movement test instead of relying on the current icon in the app.
- Close the door or window and leave the sensor and magnet in their normal mounted positions.
- Open it slowly while watching the device’s live state or event history in the app.
- Close it again and wait for the corresponding closed event.
- Repeat the separation-and-reunion movement once more while the app log is visible.
A correct installation should produce a state change when the magnet separates and another when it returns. Aqara’s support guidance specifically recommends repeating this movement and checking the device log. If the physical door is open but the app remains closed, or if the app changes only after a long delay, continue with the communication and power checks rather than changing automation rules.
Also check the sensor locally if your model provides a button or other status indication. A state that changes locally but not in the app points toward the hub link or pairing. A state that never changes even when the magnet is moved points first toward alignment, power or sensor hardware.

Make the two pieces face each other
A contact sensor detects the relative position of its main body and magnet. With the door closed, the marked or sensing sides should face one another as specified by the model. Check that neither piece is tilted, separated by a new trim layer or mounted on a surface that has shifted.
Open and close the door slowly while watching the gap. A door that sags, a loose adhesive pad or a magnet attached to a moving frame can leave the pieces aligned when stationary but outside the sensing position during normal movement. Press each mounting piece gently to see whether it moves; do not force the housing or bend the door.

Apply the E1 gap specification only to the E1
For the Aqara E1, the manufacturer’s manual says to align the marker lines and keep the installation gap below 22 mm when the door or window is closed. Measure the widest part of the gap with the door fully shut, then check it again while the door is being opened. If your E1 is at or beyond that limit, remount one piece so the closed-door gap is smaller and the two pieces remain opposite each other through the first part of the opening movement.
Do not use 22 mm as a universal Xiaomi measurement. An unconfirmed model may use a different geometry or operating distance, so use its own documentation instead.

Rule out movement after installation
- Look for a magnet that has slid along the frame or a sensor body that has rotated.
- Check whether the door closes against a new seal, weather strip or latch position that changes the final gap.
- Confirm that the two pieces do not scrape one another as the door moves.
- After remounting, repeat the open–close event test in the app.
4. Test the hub connection at the installed position
An accurate local movement cannot appear correctly in the app if the sensor cannot reach its hub. Aqara’s support FAQ recommends using the sensor’s button, where the model supports one, to test communication. A button press that prompts the hub indicates that the accessory is communicating. If there is no hub prompt, move the sensor closer to the hub and repeat the test.
- Leave the sensor in its current installed position and press its button once, following the model’s normal button action.
- Observe whether the hub or app acknowledges the press.
- If there is no acknowledgement, temporarily bring the sensor near the hub and repeat the same test.
- Run the open–close movement test again at the original position.
If the test works near the hub but not at the door, range or interference is the leading issue. If it fails in both locations, check the battery and pairing status before assuming the radio has failed.
Check for metal mounting
Aqara’s support material and the E1 manual identify metal installation as a potential communication problem. If the sensor or magnet is attached directly to a metal frame, cabinet or door, temporarily relocate the sensor to a nearby non-metal surface where practical and repeat the button and movement tests. Keep the pieces in the same relative orientation while testing so that you change only the mounting material.

A successful test away from the metal surface does not prove that every metal installation will fail; it shows that the mounting surface is affecting this installation enough to require a different position or a suitable non-metal spacer approved for the model.
5. Check the battery against the model’s documentation
Low or dead power is one of the failure causes listed by Aqara support. A sensor may still appear in the app while no longer reporting dependable contact events, so check the battery even if the device was previously online.
- Confirm the exact model from the label or app details.
- Read that model’s manual for the battery type and polarity.
- Replace the cell with the specified type, taking care not to short the contacts or damage the seal.
- Close the cover completely and repeat the button, range and open–close tests.
The Aqara E1 manual specifies a CR1632. Buy or install that cell only when the device is confirmed to be an E1. The E1 specification does not establish the battery requirement for other Xiaomi or Mijia sensors. If the model is not identified, stop and identify it before purchasing a replacement cell.
After a battery change, allow the app to refresh and then create a fresh open event and a fresh closed event. A battery swap by itself does not correct a magnet that is out of position or a sensor that has lost its hub pairing.
6. Use the event log to separate alignment from communication faults
The app’s event history is more useful than a single status icon. Perform the same physical test while the log is open:

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Open event and closed event both appear: the contact sensor is detecting movement and the hub is receiving it. The earlier wrong display may have been a stale screen or an automation that was reading another device.
- No events appear, but the button reaches the hub: inspect the magnet relationship and model-specific operating gap again.
- No events and no button acknowledgement: check range, metal mounting, battery and pairing in that order.
- Events stop after the device is moved: test at the original and near-hub positions to distinguish range from a physical alignment problem.
Aqara’s support instructions specifically call for separating and reuniting the sensor and magnet, repeating the movement and checking the app log. Keep the test slow enough that you can associate each physical movement with an individual event.
7. Check whether the accessory is still paired
If power, alignment and range checks do not restore events, the accessory may have been removed from the hub, lost its network relationship or developed a hardware fault. Look in the app’s device list and hub accessory list for the exact sensor. Do not assume that an icon left in a room or automation means the physical device is still connected.
Before deleting anything, note the device name, room, automations and any settings you will need to recreate. Then follow the exact model’s re-pairing procedure. Reset timing and button behavior differ between products; a procedure copied from another Xiaomi or Aqara sensor can leave the device unpaired or reset more settings than intended.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Reset or re-pair only with model-specific instructions
Resetting is a last diagnostic step, not the first response to a wrong status. It removes the existing network relationship on many contact sensors and may require you to add the device again and rebuild automations.
The Aqara T1 manual describes holding its button for five seconds to reset or connect it to the network. That instruction applies to the T1 procedure documented by Aqara; it should not be presented as a universal five-second reset for Xiaomi sensors. Use the manual for the model shown in your app, including the required hub and app.

9. Interpret the symptoms with a decision table
| Observed symptom | Most useful next check | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| App remains “closed” while the door is open; no event is logged | Separate and reunite the sensor and magnet while watching the log; inspect alignment and the model’s gap | The app is not receiving a contact event, so physical positioning and communication must be checked |
| Button press is acknowledged near the hub but not at the door | Relocate the hub or sensor, and test away from metal mounting | The installed position is presenting a range or interference problem |
| Button press is not acknowledged anywhere | Check the model-specific battery, then inspect pairing | Low power or a missing network relationship can prevent communication |
| Events appear only when the door is moved very slowly or held in one position | Watch the gap and alignment through the full opening movement | The pieces may be shifting outside the sensing relationship |
| Events remain absent after correct power, alignment and range tests | Use the exact model’s re-pairing instructions; consider hardware failure if pairing cannot be restored | The remaining possibilities include a lost accessory relationship or a failed device |
10. When replacement is justified
Consider replacing the sensor only after the exact model has passed the basic checks that can be performed without new hardware:
- The sensor and magnet are correctly oriented and remain within the documented operating relationship.
- The battery matches the model’s manual and has been installed correctly.
- The sensor responds to a supported hub-button test, or range and metal-mounting problems have been eliminated.
- The app still fails to record open and closed events after model-specific re-pairing.
If a replacement is necessary, match more than the brand name. Verify the communication protocol, required hub, supported app or ecosystem, sensor and magnet geometry, and battery type. The Aqara T1, for example, requires an Aqara hub; it cannot be assumed to work with an arbitrary Xiaomi gateway. A replacement that fits the door but uses an incompatible hub will not solve the reporting problem.
11. A compact troubleshooting order
Use this order to avoid resetting a healthy sensor or buying the wrong battery:
Recommended Free Tools
- Read the model and identify its app and hub.
- Close the door and inspect the sensor–magnet orientation.
- For an E1 only, verify aligned marker lines and a closed-door gap below 22 mm.
- Open and close the door slowly while watching the app event log.
- Use the sensor button, if supported, to test the hub at the installed position.
- Repeat the button test near the hub.
- Investigate direct metal mounting and relocate temporarily if practical.
- Install only the battery specified for the confirmed model; CR1632 is the E1 specification.
- Check whether the accessory is still listed and paired.
- Reset or re-pair using the exact model’s documented procedure.
- Replace the hardware only when these checks fail and a compatible model has been selected.
This sequence preserves the evidence from each test: alignment problems reveal themselves during physical movement, range problems change when the sensor is moved toward the hub, power problems respond to the documented battery, and pairing problems remain after those checks.
